The Cataclysm

To delve into the present, we must first unravel the tapestry of the past. Two worlds, forever entwined yet too long kept apart, converged in the southern reaches of the vast Pacific Ocean—within the embrace of Guam, the Mariana Trench held its secrets. In its concealed depths lay the Challenger Deep, a fathomless abyss that plunged to 10,935 meters, an uncharted realm hidden from the gaze of modern civilization. Unbeknownst to its current residents, this profound trench bore the indelible marks of both humanity and forgotten Earthbound creatures. Here, in the shadows, a rift laid dormant, meant to remain untouched and erased from human memory, guarded against reopening onto the other side.

This chasm transcended mere physicality, standing as a cosmic anomaly that defied the laws of physics, bending the ley lines of the universal fabric—a nexus between Gaea and the world now known as Earth.

In the times before man could accurately record such events, an agreement was struck. All mythical beings, endowed with innate abilities and profound knowledge to manipulate the forces of realms, were sentenced to vacate the Earth. They found refuge in a parallel existence, within a mirrored world forged from ethereal constructs—known in contemporary tongues as Gaea. The rift that separated these realms, the Nexus Abyss, mirrored the turbulent vortex of chaotic energies and cosmic eddies that distorted the very essence of existence. This rift, shrouded in mystery, was sealed before the annals of recorded time on Earth, its appearance elusive, oscillating between ethereal luminescence and shadowy obscurity. The waters enveloping it resonated with otherworldly energy, a palpable magic that caused an electric hum, reverberating through the marrow of those who drew near.

The Nexus Abyss, a celestial bridge, intertwined the mythical realm and Earth, where the boundaries between reality and fantasy became porous and malleable. Yet, a transformation swept through the cosmic currents connecting these worlds. As if the threads binding the universe itself had shifted, the ley lines of the two realms frayed and unraveled.

This cosmic metamorphosis began subtly, with mortal humans recounting extraordinary, inexplicable events in their realm. Dismissed initially as pranks, matrix glitches, or trickery, these occurrences hinted at a deeper disturbance. The Nexus Abyss, though not immutable, experienced fluctuations influenced by celestial alignments, ancient rituals, and cosmic phenomena. During certain phases of the moon and stars, the rift widened, permitting a substantial influx of mythical energies. Conversely, during celestial serenity, it contracted, reducing the flow between realms to a mere trickle.

Unpredictable surges within the rift, manifesting during lunar cycles, erupted with uncontrollable intensity, unleashing wild magic upon the surroundings. These surges transformed landscapes and beings, creating portals where the worlds spilled into each other. The once-sealed boundaries between the mythical realm and Earth blurred, leading to unintended consequences for both worlds.

Unbeknownst to humanity, the initial whispers of rifts on a global scale began as early as 2020. In the chaos of a worldwide pandemic, the modern world was entrenched in upheaval, rendering the unusual phenomena either dismissed, explained away, or tragically overlooked. It wasn't until the year 2101 that the full cataclysm unfolded, tearing both worlds apart and leaving behind a disorienting amalgamation.

The convergence was not a seamless fusion but rather a chaotic merging where massive chunks of the two realms collided and coexisted. Those who found themselves thrust into or fortuitously left behind on Earth seemed to have become the inadvertent beneficiaries. Gaea bore the brunt of the discord, fracturing entirely, with one half magically melded into a makeshift lifeboat. This conjoined existence acted as a temporary refuge while the search for a more permanent solution persisted. A century and a half have passed since then.

In the blink of an eye, modern society crumbled overnight as humanity grappled with the presence of 'extraterrestrial' beings, each with unique shapes and sizes, now claiming dominion over the lands once familiar. The stark contrast between the known and the alien created a surreal landscape where survival depended on adapting to the unfathomable changes thrust upon the world.

Dragons soared through the skies, reclaiming their dominance. Centaurs, trolls, orcs, and griffins roamed the desolate plains, once again part of the earthly realm. Elves, dwarves, halflings, and fairy-like beings, long confined to folklore, resurfaced and established enigmatic enclaves. Mermaids, sirens, and mythical sea creatures made any voyage in the open seas a dangerous venture.

Scattered across the wasteland were mysterious relics from the pre-apocalyptic era. Some were remnants of advanced technology, while others were artifacts imbued with latent magical energy.

These relics, sought after by both humans and mythical creatures, held the key to unlocking new forms of magic or understanding the cataclysm.

Magic & Mana

*not sure where to put this bit yet in the organization of everything.
Command Magic - Command Magic is a simplistic magical discipline that revolves around the casting of spells through the issuance of a single, concise command. Individuals draw upon the latent mana within themselves, a largely unnoticed reserve present in every person from birth. The unique aspect of this ability lies in its apparent simplicity—requiring only a mental command for spellcasting. However, the intricacies of this magical school are shrouded in ambiguity, making it a challenging and unpredictable field to navigate.

The fundamental principle is that each person can cast exactly one spell in their lifetime from the Command Magic. The nature of this magic is such that the command must be straightforward and typically consists of a single word, such as "Wait" or "Halt." Upon casting the spell, the individual expends the minuscule but finite amount of mana within them, rendering that specific magical capability forever depleted.

The rules governing Command Magic appear arbitrary, making it difficult to ascertain the mana cost associated with various commands. Uncomplicated commands, such as "Halt," are generally less costly, but determining the hierarchy of complexity among different commands remains elusive. For instance, the seemingly taboo command "Die" incurs a disproportionately high mana cost, making it an impractical and seldom-used directive. In this command, one merely halts bodily functions, a seemingly less intricate action compared to certain other commands.

The casting process is influenced by personal biases, making it challenging for practitioners to predict the effectiveness and cost of their commands. For example, the mana cost of "Stop hitting me" may be unexpectedly higher than that of the more succinct "Stop," even though both commands achieve the same functional outcome.

Ultimately, Command magic is considered rudimentary and impractical for complex spellcraft, as achieving noteworthy magical feats demands an impractical amount of mana. This reliance on personal bias further adds to the unpredictability, making it a challenging discipline for those seeking more sophisticated magical endeavors.

Mana Origin: Mana originates as an intrinsic component of the soul, persisting from birth, comparable to a fundamental soul element.

Soul-Mana Connection: Souls connect with mana, with each soul possessing inherent mana. Souls can bond with "free" mana, resembling electrons orbiting atoms. This connection exhibits variability among individuals.

Mana Quantity Variability: Mana quantity varies among individuals, with the soul's inherent resistance to change resulting in both substantial and minimal variations. Command spells utilize the free mana within the soul.

Mage Distinction: A mage's soul, distinct from the stable and inert helium-like soul of a regular person, mirrors carbon, forming bonds and attracting free mana. Mages can generate a cloud of free mana around themselves.
Environmental Influence:

Gaea-Fused Locations Impact: Command magic remains stable and less influenced by areas lacking free mana. Conversely, complex magics, drawing in free mana, are more susceptible to influence. Gaea-fused locations may amplify or alter magic effects.

Magical Residue Zones: Specific areas experience magical nullification, forming "anti-magic zones." These zones unintentionally repel mana, influencing magical residue and diminishing magical effects.
Mana Recharge and Depletion:

Effects of Mana Weakening: Depleting mana leaves both mages and normal individuals in a dull state. For mages, the vibrant world turns colorless, leading to a condition known as "Dregs."

Natural Mana Replenishment: Once core mana is depleted, there is no natural replenishment. Mana does not naturally return to a depleted soul. Replenishing mana is taboo and involves soul magic, either given freely or taken forcefully.
Common Knowledge:

Understanding Mana Depletion: Knowledge of "Dregs" is widespread, but the consequences are often unknown. The common notion is that excessive mana use results in returning to a normal state, ignoring the possibility of normal individuals becoming Dregs.

Knowledge Dissemination:-Knowledge of mana depletion is common among mages, treated as common sense. However, they might withhold this information from the general population, not viewing it as a significant concern.

Elemental Affinity Determination: Individuals undergo testing to identify their elemental affinity, a crucial factor in determining their magical specialization. This affinity serves as the cornerstone of their magical journey, guiding them toward fields of study aligned with their innate connection.

Mana Resonance Assessment: Candidates undergo a meticulous evaluation of their mana resonance, unveiling their natural inclinations and strengths across the magical spectrum. This assessment aids in assigning individuals to specific magical disciplines, aligning with their inherent abilities.

Aptitude Trials: Engaging in aptitude trials, candidates face basic magical tasks and challenges, revealing their natural talents and practical affinities. This hands-on approach contributes to the identification of their unique magical strengths.

Magical Discipline Assignment: Based on results from elemental affinity testing, mana resonance assessment, and aptitude trials, individuals are allocated to specific magical disciplines. These disciplines encompass Elemental Mastery, Healing Arts, Enchantment, Divination, and more.

Specialized Education: The educational program emphasizes task-specific learning, allowing students to delve into the intricacies of their chosen magical discipline. Each discipline boasts a dedicated curriculum covering both theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

Discipline-Restricted Knowledge: To prevent the acquisition of broad magical expertise, access to knowledge outside one's chosen discipline is restricted. This measure ensures control over magical knowledge, discouraging the development of mages with versatile skill sets.

Advanced Training and Specialization: Advancing through the program, students undergo specialized training within their chosen discipline, refining their skills to excel in specific magical tasks. Encouragement for specialization aims to foster expertise, particularly for mages within the armed forces.

Oversight by Mage Council: The Mage Council supervises the entire testing and educational process, directing individuals into roles that contribute to the stability and order of Gaea-Earth.Strict control over magical knowledge prevents any individual or group from amassing excessive power.

Collaboration with Rift Tracker Guild: The Rift Tracker Guild collaborates with the educational program, providing insights into understanding and navigating magical anomalies. Their expertise is deemed essential for maintaining stability within the magical realm.

Examinations and Graduation: Comprehensive examinations evaluate individuals' mastery of their chosen magical discipline. Graduation signifies the transition from student to mage, with graduates assigned roles within Nexus City or other regions based on societal needs.

Magical Education & Affinity
  • Innate Affinity: Every individual has an innate connection to a specific type of magic, making certain spells easier for them to master.
  • Innate Spells: Powerful spells that individuals are born with, often variations of common spells or entirely unique.
  • Sorcerers: Those who receive task-specific education, focusing solely on their innate affinities and spells. They lack a broader theoretical understanding of magical principles.
  • Wizards: Individuals who receive a general education in magic, granting them versatility and a comprehensive understanding of spellcraft. This broader education gives them a more versatile skill set.
  • Unique: Practitioners of rare or unconventional magic outside the known schools, possessing abilities not widely understood or taught.
Elemental Affinities:
  • Gravitation: Mastery over the force of gravity, enabling flight and telekinetic abilities. Often considered restrictive in application due to the relative weakness of gravity.
  • Destruction: Manipulation of entropy, causing decay, erosion, and wielding destructive forces such as fire. Associated with the breakdown of matter and the application of chaos.
  • Attraction: Control over the force of attraction, allowing for the pulling or pushing of objects toward or away from each other. Used for both telekinesis and transportation.
  • Transfiguration: Transformation of objects from one form to another, associated with alchemical pursuits. Difficult to master due to resistance from objects to change and a potential connection to soul magic.
  • Transportation: Manipulation of space to connect distant points, enabling teleportation and instantaneous travel between locations.
  • Connection: Encompassing enchantment and mind magic, forming connections with language and, to a limited extent, people. Useful for linguistic fluency and subtle influence.
  • Progression: Healing arts and future sight fall under this category. The antithesis of destruction, with applications in restoration and glimpses into possible futures.
  • Unique: An undefined category for magic outside conventional schools, often possessing abilities not widely taught or understood. These unique abilities may defy known magical principles.
Fairies and Sylvan Beings: The Little Luminaries of Conceptual Reality

Within both Earth & Gaea, fairies and sylvan beings are not singular entities but fragments of the vast conceptual reality, akin to countless stars scattered across space. These luminaries are, in essence, manifestations of conceptual fragments, each embodying a unique aspect of existence and in turn adding to the natural source of mana.

Conceptual Reality and Mana Wellsprings

Considered sources of mana in their own right, these fairy-like entities draw upon the threads of conceptual reality, channeling energies that resonate with whimsy and autonomy. In their essence, they become living wellsprings of magical power, contributing to the ebb and flow of mana throughout.

Seelie and Unseelie: Whimsy and Autonomy Unveiled

The Seelie and Unseelie, two closely related yet distinct concepts, are variants of luminous beings. The fundamental forces at play are whimsy and autonomy, each driving the nature and demeanor of these ethereal entities.

Whimsy: The Unpredictable Unseelie Court
Whimsy, encapsulated within the essence of the Unseelie, manifests as the capricious desire to follow ever-changing whims. These beings, free-spirited and unpredictable, convene in courts when their fleeting desires align. The Unseelie dance to the erratic rhythms of their wants, creating a symphony of randomness within the cosmic ballet.

Autonomy: Seelie's Focused Individuality
Autonomy, woven into the fabric of the Seelie Court, represents the desire for individual expression and personal freedom. While still whimsical, the Seelie beings embrace a more focused form of autonomy. Their yearning for individuality adds an ordered harmony to the unpredictable whims, creating a captivating element of existence.
