Four Thousand Club
Long ago, when they were kids, they were inseparable, playing in the fields near their village and the such, their life was idyllic, they grew up together and when they were in their early teens a romance blossomed between them, but over time they began to grow apart, she had aspirations of being a great knight wielding both magic and sword, and he wanted to be a merchant, wander the lands and make his fortune, both perfectly acceptable fields regardless of gender in their homeland, and when the time came, she turned 17 and left to become a knight in service to the queen and fight the hordes of monsters amassing at the border of the land, while he began his work on a merchant caravan, hoping to one day lead his own...
We skip ahead several years till they're both in their early-mid 20s, the monsters that threatened the land invaded, swept aside the Queen's forces and took the capital, the war was lost, but although they took power, they kept the existing infrastructure and ruled the land, keeping humans as second class citizens, even the queen who is now chained up in rags at the foot of the Orc warlord who conquered her as his unwilling concubine.
The young man has indeed become a merchant, and even with the land ruled by monsters he is one of the few humans with wealth in the land, he returns to his home village for the first time in years to find the people there in fear, terrorized by a single powerful monster, upon her revealing herself, the she-monster introduces herself as the same girl who left the village all those years ago, even her armor is a bastardized version of the Queen's knight's armor... and she says she has been terrorizing the village looking for him, for she has returned to fulfill the promise of marriage they made before she left.... even if she has become a monster.
