Lily widened her green eyes and directed her attention to Remus Lupin, who was drenched in liquid and covered in big red ugly boils. Sirius couldn’t believe it- poor Remus. The whole class began to laugh at him. “Alright alright! Settle down class!” Slughorn said. “These things happen, there’s no need to laugh at your fellow students,” said the big bellied professor. “Come here my boy, I’ve got a correctly brewed cure for boils potion that’ll fix that right up,” said Slughorn, pulling out a vile and handing it to Remus.

Remus took it. “T-Thanks,” he muttered, feeling like he was about to die.

“Maybe this is why mutts shouldn’t be allowed near open flames, huh?” Snape snickered and elbowed Mulciber.

“Of course dear boy. Be a bit more careful next time though,” said Slughorn. Mulciber cackled, “Didn’t think the mutt could get any uglier but those boils did the trick!” he said. “It was you!” Sirius shouted at Sirius and Mulciber. “You ruined our cauldron!” he accused.

“No Remus. They’ve ruined our potion purposely!” Sirius said. “Bloody gits!” he shouted, pointing a finger at the two Slytherins. Lily looked worried. Surely Severus wouldn’t sabotage another student’s potion, right?

“I didn’t know you slimy freaks would ever stoop as low as to sabotage our potion because you were that jealous,” huffed Sirius. “Just you wait till later today. James and I will beat you both!” he threatened.

“I will!” Sirius insisted. “No worries Snape. We’ll show that disgraced heir and his messy haired freak of a friend who’s the superior ones during our little skirmish,” said Mulciber, sneering as he cracked his knuckles.

James went red in the face. “You leave my friends alone! Remus never even did anything to you! Why do you hate him so much?”

“James,” said Lily softly, trying to get him to think better than to engage in this argument. She hated how boys got. Lily gave a little look at Snape- a disapproving frown. Mulciber just grinned stupidly. “You’re going down. Don’t be surprised if you can’t see straight ever again,” hissed Sirius.

Snape flinched when he got a disapproving look. Why didn’t Lily see how stupid these Gryffindors were? He pulled down Mulciber. “After class,” he muttered.

James turned to Lily. “What are you missing? He’s harassing my friends. He’s calling them names.” James shook his head and mixed his cauldron. “I’m going to defend them. They don’t deserve that.”

Remus swallowed. “Sirius, please.”

Mulciber huffed but nodded, obeying Snape. Lily shook her head disapprovingly at Sirius, Snape, and that ugly Mulciber boy. “I just wish you boys would stop fighting,” she said to James.

Sirius shot daggers at Snape and Mulciber. He couldn’t wait to destroy them later on with James. He’d be quiet for now for Remus though.

“They started it. Stepped on Remus’ foot and called him a mutt for reacting.” James stirred the cauldron angrily.

Remus sat awkwardly at the desk. They couldn’t do anything. The cauldron was ruined. They’d get a failing grade. He was excited for potions. It held the fondest memories he had for his mother. And now he made a fool of himself and he’d be permanently labeled as the potions screwup.

Without warning, he stood up and left the class. Maybe it would add more to the whispers, the mockery. But he couldn’t be there anymore. It felt suffocating. Like the wolf was expanding under his skin, threatening to rip him to shreds.

Lily frowned and sighed. She didn’t know what to say. She wished boys weren’t so dumb and would forget about their petty fights and be nice to each other. It wasn’t that easy though unfortunately. Sirius widened his eyes and turned around as Remus suddenly left the room. “Remus! Wait!” he called after him. Sirius then started after Lupin, leaving the room to go find him.

James sighed. “The potion’s done.” He pulled the spoon out.

Remus didn’t know where he was going. He just started heading to a bathroom to have somewhere to be.

“Great work Potter,” said Lily with a nod. She appreciated his help but worried for that poor Remus boy, and for Snape and James.

“Remus! Stop! Please! Hold on!” Sirius called after him. “Please Lupin! For me!” he pleaded with his friend as he continued walking.

James nodded. “Do we tell the professor…?”

Remus turned around. “Sirius. Why… why did you follow me?”

Lily nodded her head and raised her hand. “Ah! Ms. Evans and Mr. Potter!” Slughorn said, catching the two of them. “How may I help you?” he asked them.

“Because Remus! Don’t leave. They sabotaged our potion. This isn’t on you. We can still make things right and fix this. I don’t want your first day at Hogwarts to suck,” said Sirius.

“We’re finished with the potion, professor.” James gestured to their cauldron.

“Professor Slughorn won’t believe that! The cauldron is melted. We can’t make a new one. The entire class thinks I’m a fool, all the Slytherins think I’m a freak. My mom is—“ He suddenly froze. Sirius didn’t know about his mom. He couldn’t mention his mom’s potions. She was an ill muggle.

“Ah! Excellent! Let’s the a look see shall we?” Slughorn said as he took a vile and filled it up with some of the liquid from Lily and James’ cauldron. He swished it around in the bottle and analyzed it. “My, I must say, this is excellent craftsmanship for a first year! Outstanding!” Slughorn declared. Lily’s green eyes lit up. Perhaps James Potter was a little potions expert.

“Who cares what they think Remus?” Sirius asked. “I’ll explain to Slughorn what happened. You have to come back mate,” he insisted. “We can’t let them ruin these seven years at Hogwarts.”

James grinned. “Thank you, professor!”

“They’re not going to ruin the seven years. I just… I-I…” How could he explain himself to Sirius? That there was a wild wolf inside of him that threatened to overtake him? Make him ugly and emotional? “I just can’t, Sirius. I’m not like you. I never will be”.

“Yes! Thank you Professor!” Lily said. “Ten points to Gryffindor. Excellent work,” replied Slughorn with a smile.

“What? What do you mean? You’re totally like us! Hell, you’re better than us! You’re super brilliant,” said Sirius. “Remus please, just calm down. Everything will be alright, okay?”

James nodded. “Thank you.”

“No. You don’t… you don’t understand. There’s something wrong with me, Sirius. I have to be careful.”

Lily looked to James, green eyes wide with joy. “I must say Potter, I’m impressed!” she told him. They’d passed today with flying colors.

“What’s wrong with you?” Sirius asked, wanting to know what he meant. “Nothing’s wrong with you mate,” he said, but he was worried. “Are you feeling alright? Are you sick? Belly ache? Is that what you mean? Did breakfast not sit right?” Sirius asked.
