Fantasy The Lab of Mistakes

Humans did this to us. We were just kids. Kids with the misfortune of being the scientists' sons and daughters. We still are kids, even the ones that have lived more years in this hell than others. I should know, I'm one of those older ones. I'm still a kid, deep inside, a kid hoping to return back to actually being a kid and getting on with life. But that can't happen. It just can't. I know for sure. They told me so.
We have mutations added on to our humanism. Can we really call ourselves humans anymore though? We can't, because of them.

You know, I never actually thought I would end up hating my dad. Well, guess what? I do. I hate him so much. I know you must hate your parents too. We all do, most of us, yet all we can actually do in this world is hope that the next 'experimental procedure' doesn't take up too much time. An hour shorter, we pray, just an hour.

Anyway, I'm not scribbling this out to tell you how bad the lab is since you must know. Bet you never thought I would have a point. Well, I do! I promise! I'm writing this out to tell all of the children, all of them, that they are going to get free. We will, you've just got to believe. I know most of you have stopped believing by now, but guess what? Start that part of yourselves up again because we're going to do it.

We're getting out of this hellhole.

-Signed, Zero

THE PLOT:

Scientists wanted to push the boundries of mutations. They were determined to create succesful mutated humans and didn't care about anything else. That's why they experimented on their own children in order to accomplish their goals. Tedious hours upon hours were spent on experimentation that went well beyond the amount of pain normal humans would usually experience during the course of their lives. This was all done about 10 years ago and continues even today. Some of the subjects are ancient, others are so very painfully recent. The very first experiments came out grotesque and disgusting, but the scientists soon learned from these mistakes.

After these scientists had some very succeful tests, the government soon heard about it and wanted the scientists to create super soldiers to aid the army in a war that had been raging on for a while. Some experiments were sent out, though most didn't last long. That was when the scientists then began enhancing the subjects' senses and reactions.

It was hell, as the boy Zero stated from his note. The tests were so excurciating that some experiments even died on the operating table. There have been some to escape this lab, however, though that has only made security tighten up around the lab. The objective is to escape and stay hidden, perhaps try to live normal lives.

However, the year is 2110. The outside world might just prove to be worse than the inside.

CAN YOU SURVIVE?

Dog Cages- Everyone lives in their own dog cage, save for a few "special" ones that are too big or have too much strength. The cages are tough and sturdy, with enough room to at least move around a little.

The Lab- Way out in the country, it takes quite a long ride to get there. The picture shows the lab, though this is simply a lab where they create new medicine and all that. Underground is where our characters are.

The Lab of Mistakes

The lab. Dim, with hardly any light getting through the windows. Underground, musty, the air barely breathable. There were operating tables in this room, lots of them. All aligned just right, not that it mattered. The floor and walls, all grey. The cement that surrounded this room is what made the color. Nobody had bothered to paint over it with a pretty yellow or a gentle pink. Not that that mattered either. This room wasn't made to be pretty. The slight shade of red on the wall proved that to be true.

The room that connected to it looked even more grave. The walls could hardly be seen with how dim it was. Barely any windows. Wait, are those blocks on the walls actually windows? Probably, though a layer of dust covers it, so thick that hardly any light shines through. The musty smell here was mixed with the scent of urine and blood. It's even less sanitary here than in the other room. Blood commonly found on the grey floor, the grey walls, the grey everything.

Cages too, in this room. It wasn't crowded, however, there are barely any. The sense of failure hangs over these cages. Mistakes, all of them, that's what the scientists say. They haven't been found out though, so they keep working. New experimentation all the time, a new test to try, new hell to go through. All in the life of an experiment.

One is dragged out of the cages. A little girl. Her mouth is opened to let everybody hear her screams. She is unlucky, for in this underground world there will be no rescue. No one but the scientists and the experiments can hear her. The scientists don't care; the experiments can't do a thing. And so, she is taken to the other room. The one with the operating tables, where no mercy is offered. Not even to a little girl.

Zero

Zero woke up. He was greeted by the same old darkness surrounding him. The teenager shut his eye again upon hearing the screams of a child. She was getting annoying. Really annoying. He hated thinking like that, but it was how it was. These days, the screaming wasn't unbearable. All it was was annoying. He felt no more pity for those who screamed, for nothing would save them. The only thing the screaming did was shatter eardrums since in this place, sound echoed.

The screaming had gone on for a couple of days now. Zero didn't believe that he had counted the days right. Nonetheless, it had continued. It came less often these days, which made him wonder if the girl was turning out to be a failure. He didn't wish it upon her' he'd never wish it upon anybody. His father had already done that, and Zero was nothing like his father. No, he had a plan. A plan to get everybody out. 9 years was long enough. It wasn't going past 9, this he had promised himself.

And so, he continued to scribble his message. This message would be sent to all of the experiments, in order to bring back the hope they all used to have. It was done on the back of a photograph, so carefully that he had learned to be precise by now. He had to write small, plus he had to remember how to write the words out. 9 years of no education made it difficult. Being cramped in a small cage with hardly any space made it nearly impossible.

Why now? That was simple: he had been examining the scientists for 9 years already. He knew exactly what they all did. Tomorrow was the day they went upstairs and left everybody alone for the whole afternoon. It was a special day. A day they were left alone, at least for a little while. That was the time to escape. "We're getting out of this hellhole," he finished, his writing completely cramped. At least he still had the space to sign his name: Zero.

Valen

The smell was disgusting. Valen flipped himself to his side, away from the others, and pinched his nose. He made a bit of a clatter as he did so, the minimal amount. It was quiet in the lab, all except the noises the screaming girl made. He knew a few more screams would accompany that one before the day was done. That was always how it was. It smelled bad, it was noisy, and it was dark. At least in the darkness he could see. He stared at the bars that pressed against his face.

The kid already knew that the bars were way more than strong, even his own razor-sharp teeth couldn't cut through this cage. He wondered what could. Valen poked at the bars, his eyes half-closed. He was so tired, though the screaming was in the process of shattering his ears at the moment. Another guy, named after some number or something like that, had constantly told all of them to save up their power. The guy didn't want them to show their full potential to the scientists. Valen understood that.

He closed his eyes fully as he tried to sleep through the noise and the smell and the headache that was demanding his attention. Valen hadn't had a good night's sleep in years. He wished he could get at least a little rest, but it seemed like it wasn't meant to be.

Rose

"No! NO!" The girl screamed and kicked as she was dragged out of her cage. Not another experimentation. She already knew it was going to be on her eyes. Her heart pounded upon remembering the table she had lain on every day. Rose had been counting the days. 2 weeks exactly, 2 straight weeks of being in this place. Away from her mother, her father. Why did they hate her so much? Why?

They took her into the room with her still screaming her head off. Sobs were mixing in as well, her delicate face streaked by warm tears. This was even worse than the cramped cage she now spent her days in. Being blind didn't help either; it just added to the terror. She could feel herself getting placed on the table. Again they focused on her eyes and still she screamed. The room was soundproof, though, so once the door closed only she and the scientists could hear her desperate cries.

(It's a bit lengthy, yes, but I hope you guys enjoy! I won't ask for too much, though the minimum is 2 paragraphs. I had a lot of fun typing this out!
:) Edited the first post as well to include a bit of an 'introduction', so please give that a read if you haven't yet!

@Icefox11 @AbraxasNine @Sensei Fox Thank you so much for your patience you guys!)

"Please stop, I am so tired."

The scientists were doing yet another flight test and Emily was about ready to pass out. Finally the buzzer sounded and she fell to the ground. She heard the scientists discussing why she was unable to fly long distances without aid from the wind. She looked up at the glass window.

"Its because humans were not made to fly you idiots."

She tried standing up but, she was too tired. Two scientists came in and dragged her back to her cage. They continued their discussion as they walked away she overheard them say something about the weight of her bones. She shook her head

No, no more tests.

She made sure the scientists were gone and grabbed a paperclip she had stashed in her hair. She tried to pick the locks of her cage again, she got shocked on the third lock this time. She was desperate she kept trying to pick it and she kept getting shocked.

"Come on......ouch!"

The last shock really hurt, she climbed back up and sat on the swing in her cage. She didn't hear the little girl, she wondered if they had taken her for more experiments.

"Did they take the new girl away?"

She sat gently swinging in her cage. She hoped not, that girl was far too young to be here. She had been here 4 years, she had accepted her fate. She just hated it when they brought in new people.

Luna covered her ears, hearing the small girls screams enter her ears. She hated those new ears. She looked out into the darkness, barely making out the view of the girl being dragged out of there. She sighed, getting up from her spot on the floor. The cage was larger than some of the others due to her form. She sighed and shuffled in her cage, seeing the other subjects around her cage as she paced back and forth in her cage. Seeing other scientist make rounds to some of the expirements, she growled as they reached her cage.

The scientist put on a thick glove they use for dogs and opened the door. Luna growled, her claws racking the metal on the cage. They grabbed her scruff and hauled her to the front, sticking a needle in her arm and drawing blood. They took the vile and tossed her back, leaving her sprawled on the floor. She got up, her hair long and mangled, but she had managed a small piece into a braid. She growled a bit to herself, prodding around the cage again.

Renegade

There she lay, her back greeting the cool steel of bars below her, arms tucked together behind her head as if relaxing was something even capable of being natural here. Her feet stroked the wall of the cage, looking to be as if a sign of boredom, unknown to others that it was a sign of agitation. Her eyes traced the poor soul who was being dragged away, a time or two her foot lifting away from the bar before gently meeting them once again. She could not understand that fear, that pain the others felt somewhere within their hearts. All she knew, was that it was unfair. At times she would have to ponder if she in held the strength to destroy these cages once and for all, but what if, by any chance she was incapable of doing so? It would merely worsen their circumstances and a whole if she attempted anything foolish.

A quiet voice could be heard within the room, probably attempting to tamper with her cage in some way. If she could do so stealthily, that would be absolutely perfect, but what was the plan after that? "Did they take the new girl away?" the voice met the air a little more clearly, apparently she was not present for the event. "They did..", she spoke out in response before rolling on to her side away from the door of the cage. This was mainly to take away the temptation of kicking at the wall with her full force, but it would be a lie to say she wasn't looking for a position at least a little more comfortable.

At the other end of her cage was a plastic pool, not one so extravagant, seeing as it looked more like a child's temporary sand box. Within, murky waters that showed it's frequent use, as well it's lack of changing. It was becoming difficult to live like this, dependent on the scientist whilst holding a minor hatred towards them. Something needed to change.. "You better be plotting something, Zero."

She looked in the direction where the voice came from. Her gut feeling was confirmed they had taken the little girl for more experiments. She was furious at the scientists for taking another child from their parents. She wondered how they lived with themselves doing this to innocent kids.

"those monsters"

She attempted to pick the locks again getting shocked on the third lock again. She stopped when she heard footsteps again. She quickly sat back in her swing. A scientist walked up and looked at the two locks she had picked.

'Well Emily looks like you have been busy'

He suddenly smacked her cage, she retreated back cawing like a frightened Raven.

'Looks like we are going to have to electrify all of your locks now'

He took two new locks out of his pocket. Replacing the ones she had picked. He walked away and she curled into a ball at the back of her cage. her wings forming a protective barrier. She hated the scientists, not as much as she hated her mother though. her mom could come down and get her at anytime but, no the only thing her mom did was send her a dress on her sixteenth birthday.

Zero

His eyes must have scanned the words over a million times. Zero had been working on this for a while now, the message that he hoped would help him with his plan. He had to find out who wanted to go. It was necessary, for he couldn't bring along people who would rather rot here than go back to the real world. There was no room for them; they'd drag his plan down. Just like the plan he had attempted back when he was younger. His shoulders slumped slightly at the remembrance.

'
It won't happen again,' he swore in his thoughts. No, this time the plan would work. This time he would be careful. He would be patient. He'd been patient for years, another day wouldn't hurt. The scientists had made the cages stronger since that fateful day. Zero pushed on his cage slightly with his feet, though he already knew that it wouldn't be budging anytime soon. Anytime soon? A small grin stretched across his face. Like hell. Tomorrow it would budge. Tomorrow he would be a free man.

Zero flipped the message around, to the other side. His mother's familiar face greeted him there, smiling and pretty. He let out a light broken sigh as he leaned his head back. After this, he was ripping the message into little pieces. She was a part of the past now, and though he ached to see her again, he knew she wouldn't be able to accept the experiment he had become. His tail lightly twitched to remind him of it. Yeah, that thing. How could she deal with that, or with his unsightly face, or with all the scars he had received? His appearance would destroy her life. And so, Zero crossed out her face with the pen he had managed to steal and turned his attention back to the message. He waited until the scientists weren't looking at him and slowly aimed the photograph at one of the other cages. It hit its mark, just right, just like he had planned. It was a sign. A good one. The first step was in motion.

(@AbraxasNine You can have the message first!~ It's the same message as the one in the overview. :) )

Rose

There were restrains, and they managed to wrestle them onto her arms and legs so that she couldn't move. It was terrifying, the darkness her only friend as the scientists continued to torture her with this experiment of theirs. Her father continued to tell her that they were just working on her eyesight. He kept telling her that everything would be okay, that she would be out soon, that she could finally be able to see again. This wasn't "soon". The child didn't care about being able to see, not if she had to go through this in order to take a look at the world around her. It wasn't what she wanted. It wasn't!

Rose had told her father several times that she just wanted to go back home. She wanted to see mommy again. She hated this so much, she had told him her feelings but her father just smiled and replied that it was for the best. She wailed now, sobbing uncontrollably. The scientists complained all around her, one finally placing something over her nose and mouth. She was knocked unconscious soon enough. The last thing she felt before her eyes closed was tears mixed in with blood sliding down her face.

Renegade

A scientist spoke out, naming Emily directly after finding the picked locks. Her frightened caws could easily be heard, as well the scientist's notification of electrified locks. It would only be a matter of time before they put those locks on every cage now to prevent any others from getting the same idea. Rene could not blame the Raven girl for her efforts, even if they did end in vain. It showed that some of these fellow mistakes still had some fight in them, a yearning to escape. So much that they would, at times, attempt to free themselves, even when working alone. Unfortunately, Rene did not have this same passion, she could not think of herself escaping alone. She knew very well that she was one of the few treated ever so slightly better than the others. And this was merely because they thought of her as a tamed, yet dangerous animal.

It was then that a peculiar object passed through her cage. Thin in form, but meaningful in nature, a simple photograph that contained a message behind. Rene calmly reached for it, not allowing a stir of movements to arouse suspicion from a scientist. Only twisting her frame to look over the other cages, as if in search for the sender. Averting her eyes back to the paper, the girl slowly read over it, of course there would be a certain level of difficulty in even accomplishing such a minor feat. Between the dim lighting that passes through the cages, and the unfamiliarity with a couple words. But in the end, the message was clear, they desired to escape this place together. Whether they had the ability to do this or not was a question that probably should have been asked. But by this point in time, she was simply tired of waiting. The girl pushed herself up, looking over to the cage designated to the individual who signed the message.

Without a word, nor a response to this message, the girl simply passed the photograph to the next cage in line. There was honestly no reason for her to trust Zero's words of freedom, but living day after day like this would prove wasteful. So, she would take a gamble and believe in the boy's cause. "Let's see where this goes, shall we?." The girl spoke only within her mind, falling backwards into her relaxed position as she stared upwards at the bars... Bars, no matter where she looked.. This sight was growing too dull.

Scratches, screams, bars. Those were all the things she could remember from this place. The darkness was there, but because of her eyes, she could see all of her "Friends" Being tortured and rotting in there cage. She growled, her claws racking the bottom of her cage, the sound defining her ears. She wanted out, but her claws couldn't help her get out.

She was padding around her cage, her muscles craving to run. But she couldn't. She heard a small thud of something light land on her cage. She looked at the rhino in the next cage over, her eyes narrowing. Picking up the small picture, with writing on the back. Reading it, she smiled and passed the picture into the bird cage next to hers. She smiled to herself and said quietly "Hope this works, Zero."

She grabbed the picture that had been slid into her cage. She read the letter. She hoped Zero wasn't lying, she really wanted out of this place. She re-read the words before sending it off to the next cage. She hadn't lost her will to escape no, she still had it. She felt like a caged bird, unable to move around freely. The only issue she had with the plan is what they will do when they get out. They all had strange mutations because of the experiments. They couldn't just walk outside care-free.

"I hope it works."

She quietly said. She stood back up and sat in her swing. Now she just had to wait, she contemplated life outside of the lab. She wondered if there was still a small wooded area nearby. She wanted to live there if she got out. She closed her eyes and imagined living there, flying up into trees, feeling the sunshine on her skin.

It would be heaven....

She knew that was a far stretch. the minute they stepped outside people would stare at them. Maybe they could say that they are in costume. She shook her head. She knew she would just have to wait and see what happened.

Zero

He felt a sense of early victory as he watched the experiment he had first given the message to. She looked over at him, yet he didn't even blink under her gaze, then passed the message on to the next cage. It was one of the biggest thrills of his life, seeing his message getting passed around and read. Zero hadn't felt this alive in a long time, hadn't felt this human. Now he felt it and he knew it was inside of him. His humanity was still there, it was just a little altered. He felt like God at the moment, like he had all the power in this situation. Sort of a human-like feeling, wasn't it? He wondered.

Zero continued watching with a lazy gaze as the message was passed and read. "Hope this works." "I hope this works." The one word was what he needed to hear: hope. Hope, actual hope. The feeling he got from that word was exhilarating, like a breath of fresh air he hadn't taken in so long. He slowly put his hand to his chest and realized that his heart was pounding from the excitement. He was alive, they all were, and with his hand over his beating heart he swore he'd get them out. What a promise, but it was a promise he intended to keep.

Valen

Something was in his cage, lying right next to him. Valen could sense it as his eyes drowsily opened. It hadn't woken him up, though, it had landed too lightly to do so. He had been in and out of sleep for the past few minutes, stuck between nightmares and the real world. As if his nightmares were any worse than reality. Sometimes his dreams were merciful, offering a temporary escape. He took every chance he could to go to sleep. Though now he opened his eyes, curious as to what the object could be, and rolled to face the others.

A photograph. He stared, his eyebrows tightly drawn together in a frown. What in the world? The woman in the photograph seemed to be crossed out, so Valen slowly turned it over. There was a message, scrawled out as if a child had written it. He couldn't help but feel lightly amused, though that feeling quickly dropped away. Several minutes passed by as if he was decoding a complex message. Valen hadn't seen letters and words for 5 years now and he was struggling. In the end, he got two things out of the message- The words
"We're getting out" and that that sender was Zero. The same guy who had told each and every one of them to avoid showing the scientists their potential.

An escape plan. Valen's breath caught in his throat as he stared at the words he knew.
"We're getting out." The emotion swirling inside of him was so intense that he barely noticed a tear escape from the corner of his eye. He caught it just in time, with one quick motion it was gone. He slowly drew his knees to his chest as the complicated feelings devoured his thoughts. Valen looked out at the other experiments. He saw the misery, the anger, the fear. He smelled the blood. They had to get out of here, he knew. His thoughts wandered, switching to the outside world. What was it like now? He hoped it was beautiful. He hadn't seen something beautiful in such a long time. As he continued to think, he almost missed the squeal of the other door opening. Almost. The sound was ear-splitting. That squeal meant that the scientists were done with the first experiment of the day. Valen watched as the girl that had been taken was practically thrown back into her cage. She did not look to be in good shape. He faintly wondered who was next as he turned away from the others.

Renegade

The fleeting moment, filled with hope, only came to waver when those doors opened once more. The poor girl, brought back by the scientist, was forced into her seemingly eternal prison. The young girl had probably yet to become numb to these experimentations, which only made her that much more fragile within the eyes of Renegade. Even if the letter found it's way to her, the cursed child would be incapable of reading, further restraining her ability to gain hope from such a simple thing. "Rose," her voice escaped her lips in the slightest of whispers. She once heard that this girl gained the ability to hear the lowest of sounds. Perhaps it was a meaningless bid, seeing as even if it were true, she may very well be mentally blocking out any source from the outside. But, perhaps, it was still worth a try, "listen to my voice."

"Trust the one known as Zero." Renegade continued to speak, her lips barely showing signs of movement by how quiet she was speaking. It was like air simple escaped her in a patterned form, even the room, as likely as it was to echo even the mildest of dings, brought no response. The girl's seafoam green eyes looked no where else but down towards her own body, no sign of fear, or pity living amongst them. "You know who that is, right?" Steps could be heard as the scientist proceeded through the line-up, probably choosing who their next toy would be. But still, she would not stop with her words, even if clouded by a greater source. "He fights for you. He fights for us all." Her words slightly improved the image of the boy she spoke, even above her own mindset. After all, there was no way to define his words as nothing but true. "You won't have to suffer anymore."

Why was it that she even chose to talk at all, if she had not completely believed in the other's words? Did she simply desire to pass on that sense of hope that she herself could not firmly embrace? "You still love your father, don't you?" Her words met the air with continued silence, but this time her eyes finally trailed towards her target. "Then let's prove to him, that you are fine how you are." Why was it that she even bothered to continue acting like those men may one day accept them as human? Wouldn't it be better for the girl to realize the truth, before all was lost? " Zero will help you prove it to him, but you have to be good and wait just a little longer."

Rose

The girl felt so weak, so tired. She curled up into a defensive ball as soon as the scientists brought her back to hear cage, it was all she could really do at the moment. She didn't even have the strength to keep crying, she could only lay there. Her thoughts were dark, filled with hopelessness. She closed her eyes, though it wasn't like she could see so there was no difference between open and closed eyes. The darkness swirled around her like it always had, forever looming around her. She sniffled; her eyes were hurting. There was no way to ease the pain, as usual. Touching anywhere near her eyes just made them bleed.

Then, there was a noise. Rose's head turned slightly, the only gesture made that she was indeed listening. Someone had called her name, and was now instructing her to listen. It was a female, she could hear it. Her ears were so sensitive these days, thanks to her blindness. It was the slightest whisper, she knew, but to her it sounded like it was being whispered right into her ear. She was still as she continued to listen. Zero? Her mind slowly wandered as she tried to remember. Then, she did. Zero... That other experiment. He had told her to hide her full potential. She still didn't understand those words, but at least she knew who this other one spoke of. She let out a small but sharp exhale when she heard the footsteps of the scientists, the noise almost painful to hear ears as it echoed. No more suffering... Rose liked the sound of that.

She tensed, then, as the other asked her another question. She nodded her head slowly, unsure, then became still and made no other movements throughout the other words. Rose relaxed slowly, trying to sleep. Wait a little longer... Two weeks was long enough, why longer? She wanted to cry again she wanted to do something, anything, but she couldn't. She was so tired...

(This is my 100th post on RPN! :D

@Icefox11 @AbraxasNine C'mon guys, let's keep this RP going!~ I know Icefox is on vacation for a little while, so I've decided to not post too much.)
