Deep in the forbidden forest, half-humans, such as centaurs, satyrs, and mermaids, are developing magical ability. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is at a loss for what to do. Many students' parents are arguing over what to do with the beings. But before Hogwart's headmaster could make a decision, the creatures were banned from Hogwarts by order of the Minister for Magic, Cleveland Howells. This action threw Hogwarts into a state of constant turmoil. Many people were upset about the decree, including the castle. Ever since the Anti Half-Human Decree was issued, the Great Hall ceiling has been storming. When Howell attempted to come to the castle to make a speech to the students of Hogwarts, he couldn't get past the first staircase he approached. The staircases weren't lined up, and when he tried to float up to the correct floor, he was knocked out of the sky by a staircase. Howell was furious at this humiliation and is now extremely cross at Hogwarts and it's students.

I looked out the window and sketched the beautiful sunrise on my paper. I was sitting on my window sill. I looked over at the clothes and books scattered every which way around my floor. Hopefully, Mother doesn’t come on. She’ll be furious if she finds out I didn’t pack at all last night, I thought.

“River, come on. You’ve been like half an hour. We need to leave in five minutes and you haven’t even eaten breakfast.” Kai yelled from the bottom of the stairs.

“Okay! I’m coming.” I yelled shutting my notebook away and packed it in my trunk. I hastily threw my clothes and books into my trunk and grabbed Otis. It was the morning we would be back on the Hogwarts Express.

I throttled down the dirt-covered stairs and put Otis and my trunk by the door and sat down to eat some breakfast.

“Why did you take so long?” Mother asked.

“I...uh.. couldn’t fit all my stuff into my trunk at first, but I got it by the time Kai called me down.” I lied.

I finished my breakfast just in time for Mother to come around the corner and say, “Okay, guys, Time to get going.” She grabbed the car keys and I put my bowl in the sink. I grabbed Otis and my trunk and stuffed them into the back of our tiny, light green car. I always sit in the back so I could draw without Ashton or Kai making fun of me.

When we finally got to the station, I was first one to enter platform nine and three-quarters. Next came Kai and then Ashton.

“See you guys there.” Ashton said, running off to her group of girls. I waved and turned towards Kai.

“Ready to go, dude?” I asked him. Kai and I always sat together on the train ride to Hogwarts.

“Uh...well I kind of promised Matt I’d sit with him this time. Sorry, River.” He gave me a kiss on the forehead and walked off.

I looked around. I wonder who’s gonna let a dorky fifteen-year-old sit them, I thought. I walked up the Hogwarts express and stepped into the doors of the train. Students were yelling and running across the aisle of the train.

I walked down the train, bumping into about a hundred people. I looked left and right in every compartment, but they were all full. I slowly walked down the end of the train, and found a compartment that had a well-built boy on the right and a blond-haired, warm-looking girl on the left. They both looked about my age, so I opened the door.

“Hi, can I sit here? The others are all full.” I asked. The boy looked at me with disgust and my face went red.

“Uh...” he started.

“Come on, Kelvin. Don’t be like that,” the girl said to him, then turned to me, “Of course you can sit here.” She patted the seat next to her and I smiled. I sat down and looked at the boy named, Kelvin, then out the window just as the train blew its whistle and jolted to a start.

"Alydia, come downstairs!" Mère yelled up the stairs. I put away my book, marking the page, and ran into the living room, where my trunk and cat were waiting. Mère and Maman were standing by the door. I grabbed my suitcase and walked to the door. Mère kissed me on the forehead and hugged me hard. She was always so sentimental about my years at Hogwarts. I laughed and pulled away from her hug.

"C'est assez, Mère." I chuckled with her. Maman was holding a pouch. She handed it to me.

"For the train ride there." She explained. "Don't spend it all on sweets." I laughed and hugged her.

"Merci, Maman." Maman kissed me on the cheeks. "Bye, guys. See you at Christmas!"

I walked out of the door and met my friends outside. Kelvin was holding a beat up ceramic rabbit. I smiled at them and jogged over to meet them.

"Hey Aly, how's it hanging?" Asked Maria. I smiled at her.

"Pretty good, how was your summer?" I replied.

"Oh, it was great. We went to the Bahamas!" She told me.

"Really? How was it?"

"God, it was blissful."

Kelvin sighed. "Can you two girls stop with the gossip and grab the portkey?"

I grabbed the ceramic rabbit, as did Maria. Kelvin looked at his watch and counted down

"Three, two, one, now!"

The faces around me started to blur, and I felt like I was being pulled away from the portkey. My hand was glued to the rabbit, and I felt sick. I pushed down my lunch, and rode it out until we landed on the concrete floor. I looked around, groaning. I was in a dirty alleyway, the train station down the way in front of me. I pushed myself up and helped Maria up. She brushed off her shirt and waited for Kelvin to gather his dropped books.

We all walked to platform 9 ¾, chatting about our classes.

“So, Kelvin,” I asked, “What electives do you have?”

“Uh, care of magical creatures and muggle studies.” He replied.

“Oh, cool, you’re taking muggle studies?”

“Yeah, I find it really interesting. Since I am from a pure-blood family, we never really learned about the things muggles did.”

“Awesome,” I replied. We weaved in and out of the crowds and finally climbed onto the train. Lots of compartments were already taken up, but we managed to find an empty one. We stuck our trunks up on the shelf and sat down. I gestured for Maria to sit near the window, but she shook her head and sat next to Kelvin. I shrugged and took out my sketchbook.

We sat there for a while, waiting for the train to get moving. I was sketching the room and other things I could think of, while Kelvin and Maria were chatting quietly. I could hear the train whistle blow, the sign for people to get in their seats.

Suddenly, the door opened. A girl was standing in the doorway, her eyebrows knit together and her hands wringing.

“Hi, can I sit here?” She said in a voice almost to quiet for me to hear “The others are full.”

I saw her glance at Kelvin, who was glaring at her with disgust from his corner, and her face went red.

“Uh…” Kelvin started. I interrupted him, determined to not let him kick another person out of our compartment.

“Come on, Kelvin, don’t be like that.” I looked up at the girl and smiled. “Of course you can sit here.”

The girl sat down just as the second whistle blew, and the train started moving.

“So what’s your name?” I asked her.

"Alicia! Get your lazy arse down here!"

"Language Garret!" Father yelled from the kitchen.

"Sorry dad!" Garret said apologetically.

"I'm coming down, just a sec!" I yelled down to my family.

I grabbed my trunk and Aphrodite's cat carrier, and stumbled down the stairs, trying not to fall over. Once I got to the bottom, I ran to the kitchen to see Garret sitting on the island counter. He was eating our father's famous egg omelets. He saw me and motioned that my omelet was still warm and on the counter next to him. I ran up and jumped on the island with him. I picked up my plate, and ate the omelet quickly, trying to savor it, but hurry so I wouldn't miss the train.

After I finished my omelet, I jumped off the island counter and ran to get my trunk and my cat. After a lot of stressful yelling (me) and some angry rushed name-calling (Garret), we finally got to kings-cross. It was finally my 4th year and Garrets 6th year.

Once we finally got to platform 9 3/4, I gave father and dad kisses on their cheeks, said goodbye, and headed quickly to the train. I got on and looked for the compartment with my friends in it. Once I found them, I discovered that they had replaced my spot with Angela's boyfriend.

I angrily stomped into a random compartment and sat down.

(I'm in your compartment btw. :) )

“So, uh, what’s your name?” The girl turned to me and smiled. I looked up from my book, a little shocked she was actually interested in me.

“Oh, my name is River Peckham.” I mumbled.

“River...I like that. My name is Alydia. Alydia Mace. What year are you in? Waitwaitwaitwait let me guess... fourth?” She said. She seemed like a perky girl. Her golden blonde hair was intricately put up.

“Close. Fifth year.” I said, cracking a smile. The boy named Kelvin glanced at me with a stern look on his face.

Alydia’s face lit up and exclaimed, “I’m in fifth year as well! Maybe we are in some classes together.”

I was about to respond when the compartment door flew open and a girl stomped in and sat down. We all looked at her. She glanced at me and I smiled. I turned back to Alydia.

“Yeah. I hope we do too.” I said happily.

The girl seemed mad, and I didn’t want any arguments happening, so I left it for a bit. After a while, the silence was too much to bear. I turned to her and stuck my hand out.

“My name’s Alydia, who’re you?”

The girl turned to me. “The Headmistress.” She snapped. She looked back at the window. She grimaced and turned back to me. “Sorry, that’s- I’m not usually like that. That was rude.” She apologized. “I’m Alicia. Nice to meet you.” She smiled at me.

“All offboard!” (lol what)

We arrived at Hogwarts. I gathered my things and left the compartment with Kelvin, Maria, Alicia, and River. We all chatted about classes and dorms on the ride to Hogwarts.

“Look look look!” Maria exclaimed. “It’s the first years!” She pointed to the boats the first years take. I smiled, remembering my first ride there.

“That was where I met you, Kelvin.” I laughed. “That one boy accidentally flipped the boat, and we all fell into the river.”

Kelvin chuckled. “Man, I was so mad at that kid.”

I spotted someone in a carriage ahead of me. I gasped, realizing who it was. “One sec, guys. I’ll be right back.” I leaped off the carriage, ran up to the one ahead of me, and jumped on it.

“Ophie!” I grabbed her shoulders. Ophelia turned around and gasped at the sight of me. She gave me a hug.

“Alydia! Oh my god, I haven’t seen you in forever! How are you?”

“I’m great now that I found you!” She laughed. I looked at the others in her carriage. “Want to introduce me?”

“Of course!” She pointed to each person in turn. “This is Lola, Zakary, and Samera. Guys, this is Alydia.” I smiled and waved and they all did the same.

“Well, it was nice seeing you Ophie, but I gotta go, I promised my friends I would be back soon,” I gave her one last hug. “Bye! It was nice meeting you Lola, Zakary, and Samara!” I jumped off the carriage and got back to mine.

The carriages jolted to a stop. I gathered my things and walked up to the castle.

Nobody said a thing when the girl came in. Not even Alydia, and she seemed to like to chat. I got out my book from my bag and started to read it. I was almost done with it and had only started it two days ago. A few minutes past and Alydia finally said something. She turned to the girl and held out her hand.

“I’m Alydia. Who’re you?”

The girl turned to her. “The Headmistress.” she snapped.

I looked up from my book. Kelvin looked at her as well.

The girl grimaced and looked back at Alydia. “Sorry that’s- I’m not usually like that. That was rude. I’m Alicia. Nice to meet you.” She smiled.

I went back to reading my book.
------
About fifteen minutes later, I had put on my uniform and was going over my schedule for the twelve time. The train jolted to a stop and everyone got up. I got my bag down from the overhead and waddled out of the compartment.

I was walking past the front of the train when I passed a compartment of chatty girls. I peered in and recognized two faces.

“Nina? Lily?” They turned to look at me. They seemed to be not as excited as I was. I went in for a hug and they limped their arms around me. I knew something was up.

“I was trying to find you guys, but it seemed like all the compartment were full. I found an empty one, though.” I looked at all the other girls in the compartment. They were all staring at me like I had a shark head. “Why didn't you guys come looking for me?”

“Oh, well. We, um,-” Nina started.

“We just didn’t have enough time, okay?” Lily snapped.

I frowned. “But you guys always say that even if the train starts to move, we need to find each other.”

“I know, but it’s different now,” Lily said, gesturing to the other girls in the compartment.

“I-I don’t get it.” I stumbled over my words.

A tall, brown-haired girl stood up. “What don’t you get? They don’t want to be friends with you anymore. They’ve got us and they don’t need 5-year-old crybabies whining about something they said in the first year, okay?” She shooed me away.

I looked back at Lily and Nina. My vision started to get blurry. I ran out of the train before any of them could something more.

The carriages were almost all full, so I just got on to the closest one I saw. There were two girls and a boy. Apparently, one of them saw I was crying and came to sit next to me.

“Are you okay?” the girl said. She blonde hair with bright pink tips.

I nodded and sniffed. “I’m okay. It’s just been a hard day.”

“Aww, I get it.” She put her hand on my shoulder. “I’m Abby. What’s your name?”

“I’m River. Nice to meet you. What year are you in?” she looked even too old to be in the seventh year.

“I’m in sixth year.”

The carriages jolted to a start. I smiled at her. She smiled back.

She turned to the other people in the carriage. “Everyone, this is River. River, this is Mae and Alex.”

I waved to them. They smiled back.

"No WAY!" I yelled.
"Yeah!" Kevin continued. "He straight up just left after that! Like he didn't even say goodbye to anyone. Or hello for that matter."
We all chuckled. "I cannot believe that someone peed on your floor! Like what- what the hell?" I laughed.
"Hey, to be fair, he was, like, blackout drunk," Kevin responded.
The Gryffindor prefect, Mitchell, yelled over the noise. "All Gryffindors, please follow me to the dorms!"
"What?" I frowned. "What about the sorting ceremony?" Students around me were mumbling about the same things.
Mitchell yelled again. "Gryffindors, follow me to the dorms, please!" Only some started moving toward him. He sighed. "HEY!" The chatter died down. "We won't be doing the sorting ceremony just yet, alright? I know as much as you do, so please, let's go to the dorms."
Everyone paused, then started toward the dorms. I hugged Kevin and Maria since they were both Ravenclaws, and shuffled along with the rest of the Gryffindors to the dorm, confused as everyone else. Once we got to the dorms, Mitchell told us the password ("Dim Kneazle"), and we all filed into our dorm rooms.
I walked into my dorm room to see two other girls unpacking their things on beds. They both smiled at me. I set my stuff down next to one of them and began unpacking my clothes and things into the drawers under my bed. I looked up at the girl next to me.
"I'm Alydia."
She smiled at me. "I'm Mattie. Nice to meet you."
"Nice to meet you, too," I responded. "So, why do you think we aren't having the sorting ceremony yet?"
Mattie leaned in. "I heard that it was because there is an Erumpet in the Great Hall." She whispered.
"Aren't they from Africa?" I questioned. She shrugged and continued unpacking.
Once I finished, I went into the commons. The commons were bustling with people who were all talking about how they were nervous that the new students weren't going to get sorted at all, their theories about what is in the dining hall, and people who couldn't be bothered at all. I strolled through the crowds, looking for someone I knew. I spotted a familiar face and looked a little closer. My face fell as we made eye contact. It was Reggie.
I met Reggie in my 2nd year, his 3rd. We became quick friends. He was a great friend, I hung out with him all the time. We ate together, did homework together, studied together, did everything together. I was in my 3rd year when I realized I had feelings for him. I didn't want to mess up our great friendship, so I kept it quiet. He got a girlfriend later that year. It was too hard for me to stay friends with him, so I ghosted him. I had been ignoring his letters all year.
"Aly!" Reggie pushed through the crowd. "Alydia, wait up!" I turned to leave but he put a hand on my shoulder and turned me around. He wrapped his arms around me and squeezed me tight. "How've you been? You really dropped off the map this summer." He asked.
"Yeah," I responded. "We were traveling a lot, I didn't see your letters until I got home."
He frowned a little. "Wouldn't your owl just bring it to you?"
"We... brought her with. We had a post owl take them to our home." Reggie nodded.
"Where did you travel to?" He asked.
"Um, Germany." I blurted out.
"Really? Oh, that's amazing! What was it like?"
"Really pretty, very beautiful." I looked behind me, pretending to see something. "Oh, hey, listen I've got to go, my roommate needs some help unpacking."
"Oh, that's alright." Reggie smiled and hugged me again, pulling at my heartstrings. "Tell me about it later!"
I smiled and walked back toward my dorm, trying to swallow the lump in my throat.
"All Gryffindors!" A loud voice booming over the chatter made me jump. "Please QUIETLY follow me to the sorting ceremony!" It took me a while to spot him, but I found Mitchel standing by the Fat Lady with his wand touching his neck. "We will be having the ceremony on the Quiddich field!"
He stepped out of the dorm with my housemates following him.
The person next to me turned to me and asked. "Why the field?" I shrugged, wondering the same thing.

(btw syd, here are some good reference pics for the Hufflepuff dorm I thought were cute: this but with a little less vibes, and this but less pathetic and dumb.
