The Girl Who Lived In The Walls

The hallway has empty. There was a steady drip, drip, drip from a unattached drain pipe halfway down. A girl ran down the hallway, her breathing fast and fear written across her face. Clip clop clip clop. Her feet pounded against the floor. "Hey! Kid! Get back here! You ain't getting away this time!" a hostile male voice shouted. The girl's eyes widened and her tiny feet propelled her forward. She reached the end of the hallway and flung open the door. The little girl slammed the door behind her and locked it, before proceeding to climb over a large wooden chair. The room was like an obstacle course, and she scurried along it as fast as her legs could carry her. Over lines of yarn going back and fourth, and under a stack of fallen chairs. She struggled to shove down a lamp with no bulb or shade so that it blocked the entryway. The girl clambered up on a few bookshelves and removed the grate of a vent. She crept into it and re-sealed it behind her. The girl crawled on her elbows and knees and came down on a ladder to an underground venting system. It had a fairly short roof, but the girl could still walk straight up. The floor was covered in lint and the room was filled with a bare mattress, a broken mini-fridge, and was littered with trash and wrappers. She sat down on the mattress and grabbed her worn brown teddy bear. "Don't worry Mister Puff. The scary man won't come get you." she said, brushing her matted hair out of her face with her grubby hands.
