Chapter One: Will I Ever be at Peace?

Waking up from the endless black void we call sleep, I squint my eyes to shield them from the blinding white lights that somehow are always on during the day. Sitting up from my bed, and swinging my feet over the edge to meet the hard tile floor.

I looked over to see that someone had opened the door, letting all of us know it’s breakfast. Immediately, I jumped up from my bed and rushed out the door, heading down the hallway towards the cafeteria. I’m stopped by a guy with long, pure white hair, and clear blue eyes. He’ll die soon anyways, I thought as he let open the doors to the cafeteria. Nonetheless, I went in and found my way to the serving area and got my food. At least it’s good… Nothing different than yesterday.. Wait, they gave me something new.. A look of confusion set on my face as I looked at my tray. I look up and sit next to my only friend, Owen. We only really get around twenty minutes to eat everything we have on our metal trays.

Owen looks over to me and smiles as he puts down his spoon. “Morning Ashern, did you sleep well?” Owen knows I don’t really fall asleep during the night, but still asks this just to see if I had actually made any progress to try and sleep all the way through the long nights.

I sat at my seat and let out a sigh, “Yeah, I guess so… Not much progress though, only three hours this time.” I then began eating my food.

After a while of everyone eating, the twenty minute timer for breakfast was up, so everyone had to get up and put their metal trays back on the shelf, and start to head towards the doors to leave. Owen and I put our trays on the shelf and head out with the rest of the experiments.

“Well, I’ll see you after…” Owen paused for a moment and kept his gaze facing forward, “After your experiment.. Good luck, you’ll need it.”

He gave me a sweet smile before a lady with dark brown hair gently grabbed my hand. “This way please, if you try to resist you know what will happen.” She then led me down a hallway and into a room with a chair in the middle. No… Not this room! Tears began forming in my eyes, but I held them back to the best of my ability. I quickly teleported over to the door to check if it’s locked. Damn! They locked it! Damned humans! I backed up and wiped the tears that rushed down my face. Calm down. It’s just the normal test.. I jolt at hearing the door unlock, so I immediately back up.

“Back up please, go ahead and sit in the chair over there in the middle.” It was the same lady from earlier that led me into this room. I reluctantly went over, and sat in the chair as she tightened the straps that hold my arms down. I felt a slight shiver go down my spine as she tightened the last strap. Once the lady was done, I forced my tears down once again. Owen is waiting for me.. I know he is!

She then came back over with a scalpel in her hand, rolling up my sleeves the best she could due to the straps. Seeing my scars from the previous tests from the past couple of days. I try not to think about any of this and think of something else.

Before my mind could wander off, I felt the needle press through the skin on my neck. As soon as I figured out what had just happened, my eyes started to feel drowsy. After fighting to stay awake, my eyes shut slowly as I finally passed out.

As I was walking through the forest with both my parents, I noticed something was off in the trees around me. As I turned my attention to a tall tree branch about five feet above my head, I saw something in the leaves. Since I couldn’t make it out in the dark, I caught up to my mom and dad who were ahead of me.

“Mom, I don’t have a good feeling about this forest.”, I spoke out as I kept looking ahead of me. My mom nodded in response. “I know Ashern, I don’t exactly have a good feeling about this place either-” Mom was cut off at hearing a person jump from the tree above us. As soon as she heard the person, she pushed me out of the way.

“MOM!” I yelled out as another one jumped down from the same tree just a couple feet higher. I turned around and instantly summoned my knife I usually use to peel my apples with that I normally find on my own. I swung my arm behind me to slash the guy, but my arms were immediately pinned behind me back.

“Let me go, you jerk!” Struggling wasn’t going to do me any good, since his grip is so tight. My eyes widened at seeing my mom getting a blade pulled out of her chest, and my dad getting shot twice in the head. I was horrified by what the humans really were. Monsters. Not realizing what emotions were coming out of me, I freed my arms from his grip and kicked him into a tree and ran away as fast as I could into the dense forest. It was only a matter of seconds before the same guy that held me back from getting in the way caught me and knocked me out.

I slowly open my eyes only to see Owen right next to my bed, patiently waiting for me to wake up from my nightmare. Feeling something tickling down the side of my face, I realize it’s a waterfall of tears again. Oh… that dream again.. Always happens when I get knocked out from that sleepy shit they put in me. I slowly sit up and brush my hand above Owen’s ear. Normally he would wake up from that. “Owen.” I say, which this time he actually wakes up to me calling his name. He immediately bolts up to his feet and turns towards me calmly.

“Ashern! You're awake! You were out for almost the whole day! I was so worried!” Owen was practically yelling. Which I know he cares about me, but sometimes he doesn't have to yell.

“Hey Owen.. Don’t worry, it happens every time they do that sleepy shit to me.” I move out of bed, standing up to reach Owen’s height. He’s the same height as me anyways. We then go out to the cafeteria again and start to get our dinner.

The twenty minutes went by quickly as we ate our food while talking, but a feeling stuck with me that something might happen in the next day or so.

I pushed that feeling aside and headed down the hallway that led to my room. Before I could make my way there, Owen grabbed me and pulled me into a hug.

“See you in the morning, Ashern. Make some progress for me, okay?” In return for his hug, I wrapped my arms around him and nodded.

“Don’t worry, I’ll do my best.” I said with a soft smile, stepping backwards just a bit.

As Owen walked off, I did the same as well, heading down the hallway down to my already darkened room. Seems like they already turned off the lights.. I entered and shut the door behind me. Climbing into bed, I let out a soft yawn, letting myself know I’m already tired. I lay down under the blankets and closed my eyes so I could try and sleep.

This night is no different than the others; I continue to lay awake, staring at the blank white ceiling.

Chapter Two: Breaking Chains

*+-*10/24/2019(The Next Day) 05:00 HRS*-+*

I drop down to the ground with a quiet thud. I hid behind a tree.

For a while now I haven’t been able to find one of those bases that the humans have around the world. Though I finally found one. Mainly because I stole a map full of them from a human that was on a patrol which clearly means that there is a base nearby.

I look at the building before me to check for guards. The guards stand as tall and rough as Mt. Everest. I pulled down my cloak that was wrapped around my neck and mouth to cover my snow white wings. I skimmed for an opening to see if there was any way I could sneak in. If not I’ll just have to dismantle all the guards.

Sadly, I can’t seem to find an opening so that leaves me to plan B. Make an entrance.

I grab my bow and six arrows, and climb onto the tree I hid behind. I aim all five arrows at all five guards necks and fire. While the sixth arrow headed to the security camera’s wires so the camera couldn’t see the arrow coming. Before dropping down I look around to make sure there are no more guards coming.

I walked over to the corpses and ripped all five arrows out of their throats one by one. I would have aimed at the head’s, but I learned the hard way that that won’t do much but draw attention to me considering they have odd helmets. I pull the arrow that hit the wires out of the wall. I’ll clean all my arrows later; I place them all into my quiver.

I swipe a keycard out of one of the humans front pockets near its upper chest as well as de-clothing one of the humans and trading my clothes for it. The odd clothing makes my body feel tight and tuff. It feels weird to have my wings away and not out. You’d think I’m used to it considering how many times I’ve done it but I just never seem like I can. I hide my quiver and bow and clothing into a pile of dead leaves.

I enter the keycard into the register pad allowing the doors to open. I enter the building mimicking a guard. I’ve seen how a lot of guards act, and I’ve also had a lot of practice.

I walk through the halls seeing a bunch of different types of species all walk in the same direction. Curious, I decided to follow them all to see where they were going. The room that they all were going to looks like a dining room but with more circle tables than I can count and it also has a little area where you can get food.

While walking I accidentally bumped into someone. I looked to see who it was and saw a short but decently heighted demon in front of me. “Sorry, for bumping into you.” The girl paused at my words and stared at me with a mixture of shock and confusion. She seemed hesitant to respond.

“Hey, it’s alright if you don’t want to talk right now, but just know that you’ll be free soon.” I gave her a gentle smile as I spoke before walking off.

I need to find a way to get those collars off. Those damned things keep them all from using their abilities.

Looking for a room where I would believe they would just have a remote control system with wires and what not for all of the collars, but I pause when I see a switch for all collars for emergency shocks in a little room. Luckily it also has another item that can fix all problems. I walk into the room and look around for anybody to be near. I look at the switch that will deactivate all collars and pull it.

I left the room and looked around and noticed a guard staring at me after I just pulled the lever. They seemed shocked based on what I just did. It pulls its gun out on me getting ready to fire. It says, “YOU'RE NOT HUMAN!”

I pull off the helmet allowing my snowy hair to flow down with its blue tips showing brighter than usual. “Of course I’m not one of you.” I crouch down knowing the timing of the shot. I trip the guard down onto its back with my leg; I grab out a knife from its boot and then stab it in the chest where its heart would be. It screams in pain.

I stand up and then let my wings be out and free, ripping the back of the clothing I’m wearing. I turn around seeing many species rushing to freedom while others seem hesitant, scared and confused and slowly walking.

I noticed the demon girl that I saw early with someone new. A boy with a hound appearance. The girl saw me and I gave her the same gentle smile I gave her earlier. She looked at me in shock and started to come towards me with the boy following her until I heard gunshots causing her and many others to duck down in. I on the other hand stands high and proud. I teleport my quiver and bow to me. I started flying and shooting all the guards in the throat. While I was fighting others started joining. I felt pride. I finally was able to free so many from a facility.

I gasped when I was shot in my left wing. But that didn’t stop me from fighting. I will not give up when I’ve gotten so much farther than I’ve had all the other times. I continued firing no matter how much I got shot… right leg, left shoulder, left thigh, stomach… I couldn’t stop. I refuse to stop.

I fired and fired until there were no more humans left. My wings weighed on my back. I dropped my bow and fell to my knees and leaned against the wall. My heart was pounding against my chest and my ears. My hands feel vastly numb. My vision blurry. Everything’s spinning… spinning… and spinning… Wait- Why is everything is spinning? Is something happening..? What is ha- Everything suddenly went dark.

I slowly opened my eyes and sat up. I flinched when I felt the pain everywhere. I paused for a second as I looked around before thinking, Where am I…? I looked to where I heard a crack. When I look over I see the same demon girl that I met at the facility. She… She saved me. A small smile formed on my lips. It’s been a while since someone cared for me or even helped me genuinely. Oh how grateful I am for meeting this girl.

I decided not to be rude and properly introduce myself, “I’m Eria.” My voice sounded hoarse.

“Ashern.” She gave me a shy smile before walking over. I smile at how adorable she is.
(In a MOTHERLY way.)

“Thank you for taking care of me. I greatly appreciate it.”

She shakes her head. “I didn’t bandage you up, that was Owen. All I did was get you out of the facility and found us three shelter.”

“Either way, thank you.” I bow my head down showing my gratitude.

She frowns and says, “If anything I should be thanking you. You’re the one who freed everyone from that facility. You’re a hero.”

I pause at those words. A hero… My father would call me his little hero all the time. I close my eyes and push the memories away from me before they could get to me. I open back my eyes and look at Ashern. Deciding that it would be best to meet the one named Owen, I then ask, “So who is the person named Owen that you speak of?”
