Jessica had always been a bright, happy kid. She loved to run and jump, dance, call her friends for sleepovers and birthday parties, as often as her mom would allow. She was always the life of the crowd. Her blonde hair, and her bright, beautiful, blue eyes could make anyone's face light up, especially when her baby teeth were falling out. You couldn't help but laugh at such a funny image. Especially with her goofy, cheesy jokes. She never seemed to get hurt, even when her older brother had accidentally broken her arm, when she was six. She hadn't shed a single tear; she had even tried to hide it from Mom and Dad.
Sean had been the first to notice when things began to change. At first she was just staying in her room, playing with her dolls and her toys more often. Eventually she began wearing long sleeved shirts everywhere she went. Her smile, which had always been easy, and given freely, had to be dragged out of her. One day, Mom had started yelling for her to come out and spend time with the family. She hated that her lovely daughter was cooped up in her room all the time. Dad had blamed it on puberty, Mom had, too. Sean knew it was something more than that. It was disconcerting.
Jessica had refused to come down stairs, so Mom went upstairs and dragged her down. When they reached the bottom of the stairs, Jessica's arm got raised up as she was fighting, clawing her way back up to her seclusion, and that's when Sean noticed the bruises. His mother noticed them, too, and almost immediately burst into tears; she had paused, her hand going limp, letting Jessica's arm drop, and then she let go of the waterworks. Jessica's eyes had already been leaking, and as Sean and Mom started hugging her, she began to sob, maybe for the first time in her entire life. It was then that they called a specialist to make an appointment.
They had been on the phone for two hours, just trying to get a hold of someone, but finally got an appointment set up... and that's where our story begins; at that fateful meeting. The very same time that Sean was fated to meet his first love; the love of his life. I've got to warn you, though, that this is a sad story, before it ever begins. It would be unfair to you, good reader, to let you think that it has a happy ending, though I guess in a certain way, it does.
