The Dragon Kings

I realise this is mostly just me being lazy but can someone give me a brief run over of the DKs, their power level, what MA/sorcery they can/can't use, and what kinda powers they have?

Do they outstrip a DB in power?  Or are they pretty much weak-ass dinos with a few magic powers thrown in?

Terrestrial Level Sorcery.

Terrestrial Level MA (though they have to be specifically designed for DKs)

Approximately Terrestrial Power (comparable to DBs, the modern DKs being weaker than lost eggs arguably, while the ancient could be construed as stronger than realm/lookshy DBs.)

They don't have charm trees, they have paths based on essence (6 total "charms")  The published paths are versatile and potent for their cost.  They are also elementally based and influenced.

They are awesome artificers of vegetative and crystal tech surpassing possibly even Solars and Mountain Folk.

In summation, get the Player's guide if you want more information on them as PCs, or Ruins of Rathess if you want more info on them as a whole.

Or ask some more questions, and I and others will likeyl respond.  I love the DKs, second only to the Abyssals, and I advocate their use a lot.

You said they were good artificers, what are they like combat wise?  I know it's stupid to compare combat power of different char types, but I wouldn't mind getting at least an idea so as to figure out whether I'm going to need 4-6 DKs to stand up to my Solar circle or 8-10.

Also, what are their dice adders like?  If they indeed have any?

The power level of Dragon Kings depends greatly on whether they're uncivilised DKs, modern DKs, or ancient DKs. If you want the kind of powers they have, Dragon Kings have elemental powers like DBs, but though they have less powers they're more versatile. DKs are roughly the same power level as Dragon-Blooded, too, but they have different strengths and weaknesses. A starting DK could probably defeat a starting DB, but that table turns as they gain experience. DKs always have neat stuff that only they can do, though.

A combat-focused DK could do stuff like turn their bodies to stone, throw fireballs around, buy extra actions, attack unmaterialised spirits, and turn into a giant dinosaur with huge pointy teeth, to name but a small sample of their awesome powers. At the top of their game, DKs can do stuff like walk through stone, walk through wood, repair any object, ignore all penalties to attack from movement, position, cover or shields, or just set everything on fire.

Nice :)

How do they compare with our old chums the Solars?  Basically what I'm asking is this: out of the DKs who are LIKELY to come into conflict with the Solars (so, that might rule out ancient DKs, I dunno), are they gonna get their asses handed to them all over the place or are my Solars actually going to have to think about what they're doing?

In a straight-up, unexpected, hey-that's-my-drink kinda fight, the Solars would win, I think. Dragon Kings can do a lot to tilt the odds in their favour, however, if they're prepared.

I think it would be unlikely for an old skool DK to pick a fight with a Solar. The DKs venerated the Unconquered Sun above all others.

I think it is highly unlikely that dragon kings of any higher developed essence level come into conflict with solars. the self awakened colonies are damn rare and probably have some kind of sun worship going all by themselves as they are effectively not creatures, they are half spirit half creature and I think a lot of the behaviourisms is hardwired into them. All the communities developing around an ancient will probably do anything to aid a solar hoping that their former masters will help them to rebuild the grandeur of their race.

Unciviliced dragon kings can have a great variety powerlevel wise, granted they got no fancy elemental powers but I would and have used them alien style. We speak about alien 2 here, take vast numbers, narrow corridors of an ancient manse/downed airship, blastdoors being beaten down, characters fleeing through the vent system and all that while they try to rescue to ancient dragon king in his stasis chamber or their friend who has been taken captive and is going to end up as dinner really soon.

Um, that would depend entirely on the Solar in question, no? I'm sure any number of DKs would be happy to be gunning for Moray Darktide.

Sure, the DKs are generally well disposed towards Solars, but general dispositions only take one so far.

Like I said highly unlikely, not entirely impossible. But most player characters are not like moray darktide.

Remember also that the DKs aren't always the allies of the Solars.  They felt betrayed by the Solars before the Usurpation, when the Solars were going mad and needed to be put down like the rabid dogs that they were.

Also, the DKs have countless Dark Paths, as noted in Ruins of Rathess, and the one that they give, the Dark Path of Consumption, is surprisingly powerful.  The Dark Paths are, in general, equal to Celestial Charms in power and utility.  Why are they banned?  All of the Dark Paths focus, well, on the negative side of existance.  There could be a Dark Path of Infernal Summoning, allowing the DK similiar abilities as the Path of Celestial Air, except that it applies to Demons and Malfeas.  There could be a Dark Path of Necromancy, allowing DKs to summon and banish ghosts and to function in the underworld.  There could even be a Dark Path of the Wyld, which would allow the DK to navigate and internalize Wyld energies.  It is really up to the ST, but it is within the Dark Paths that the true power of the DKs seems to come out.

Yes, yes you do.  Get thee to thy game shop, with cash in hand, nary this ringing, chingiling coinage, but sweet, soft, mellow scrip, indolent with the scents of commerce and lusftul greed.  Give the man his due, and take thee from his shop the fruits of thy labors, and indulge in the bliss of scheming for thy player's and thy own pleasure...

That reminds me...someone recently said, for no reason I could discern, that I was articulate and a good writer.

Really need to show this person some of Jakk's posts...

If this is an old joke, I am sorry, but it is new to me.

A friend of mine was making a Demon Queller for RIFTS.  He cracked open his Mystic China book to find a good name for the character, and noticed that it has a Chinese translation for Dragon King.

Long Wang.

This is amongst the funniest things to happen today.  Of course it has nothing to do with Dragon Kings in Exalted...  unless those Long Wang-s have... er...

I think I am going now...

I wasn't making any complaint about the term! I was just commenting on how we've started developing our own particular slang.

Lotusian does sound better, though.
