Fantasy The Deep's Darkest Secret

Lizzy

Lady, running down to the riptide

For Centuries

Mermaids and Mermen have been nothing but a myth.

But lately...Scientists are going deeper than ever before to find

These Mythical Beings.

Traces and Clues have been Found...

It is only days, or even hours from the discovery.

There!

A fin, a face, a human body with a fin rather than legs.

The first mermaid has been found.

And captured.

More people are going down to get their own mythical beings,

but the merpeople are trying to be more careful

and stay hidden.

Will the Ancient Merpeople end up being nothing but

pets and experiments?

Will the humans form friendships and fight

for their scaled friends' freedom?

Or will war break out?

On one side of the city, is nothing but open and crystal clear water. On the other -eastern- side there is a HUGE mountain of rocks, and inside a small opening, a large cave system. Only the merpeople know about it though.

Their city is location on a flat, sunny area about 400 feet under the surface. The rocks almost reach the surface to form a small, rocky island, but they stay just under the water, which sometimes causes ships to crash, wreck, and kill the crew. Also, a little ways from the actual city, lays a very steep drop off into blackness.

Halia was confined to her room again.

"Ugh." She groaned while she began to lazily swim in circles.

She and her friend Rae had been talking and swimming outside of the kingdom and apparently some weird looking humans went underwater and saw the two...And may or may not have got a picture or two. It wasn't that big of a deal, she thought, but her father thought much differently.

Halia sighed, flopping onto her bed.

It was beautiful outside, and about midday. It was unfair and should have been illegal to keep her inside.

Mizu swam up to Halia's room, gently knocking on her door as he had overheard his father's and her argument. He had no clue what it was about, but it was far from hard to hear the two of them arguing. "Halia...?" Mizu asked, hoping she wasn't too angry about what had happened. "Hey, what happened?" Mizu asked, as he was generally curious of why she was confined to her room for the rest of the day.

Lucas was tuning his guitar quietly on a small hill a bit far away from one of the labs, but still within the perimeter. He was not allowed to leave the perimeter after all, his father expected him to learn a lot when he was there. His two friends ran up to him, waving what seemed to be pictures happily about. It was honestly quite a silly sight. Lucas sighed, and ignored the two of them until they shoved the pictures in his face and almost made him drop his guitar down the hill. "Watch it!" Lucas said, as he grabbed the guitar's neck and placed it beside him, carefully to not let any of the idiots bump into it.

"Look Luke! We got the pictures! See, real mermaids!" his friend said as he looked at the blurry pictures that had been poorly taken. Even if the pictures were badly taken, you could see that there were mermaids in the pictures, or some sort of human looking fish. He got a bit curious, but the he leaned back, breathing heavily out. "You know, I could truly not care less. Show it to my dad, he's more interested," Lucas said, pushing the two of them away. Mermaids huh? What silly idiocy... Lucas thought, as the sound of the waves crushing into the shores filled his head quickly.

Halia opened the door a little, grabbed her brother's arm, then pulled him in quickly, shutting the door firmly behind. "Father said I can't have visitors either." She crossed her arms and pouted a moment. "Anyway.." She rolled her eyes then explained a shorter version of what happened.

"Me and Rae got seen by humans or whatever and they may or may not have gotten a picture or whatever. Father found out and we both got in trouble." She finishedwith a shrug, as if she didn't find the situation room-confination worthy.

"You o-" Mizu was interrupted by Halia's sudden pull as she shut the door behind him. She was clearly pouting, he had been warned about getting too close to the surface too, but out of all the people, it seemed as Halia and the King was the two who argued the most about it. Maybe Mizu was just lucky enough not to get caught. "Hey, what were you and Rae doing anyway?" Mizu asked, a bit curious since he wanted to see some humans too, he hadn't seen humans since he was a small child, before it was dangerous.

"Lucas Owens!" His father yelled, as Lucas had fallen asleep on the cliff he was sitting on. It was so peaceful to only hear the water, the wind and his own breathing, but of course someone else was there to disturb the peace. Lucas looked at his wristwatch, he was supposed to have classes about fish's biology right now, but it just ended. His father was clearly angered by him skipping class, and frankly, Lucas did not want to argue with his father. "Lucas Owens! What have I told you about skipping classes?!" He asked Lucas, angered judging by the tone in his voice. "That I'm not allowed. I'll go, but it's over already. The rest of the day I am fr-" "No, you're coming with me. I'll give you a private lesson!" His father said, grabbing Lucas' arm tightly dragging him back to the laboratory.

"We were just having fun, and got a little to close to some divers I guess. We weren't even that close to the surface! Sure, we were out of the kingdom, but we weren't deliberately trying to getin the humans' way or anything." She explained, ending it with a huff.

"Well... We can still go and have some fun... Just... Don't tell dad," Mizu said with a mischievous grin on his face, forging his bow in his hands and aimed at one of the nearby windows. The arrow hit and the entire window turned to ice, as Mizu gently tapped the ice and it crushed, without a single sound. "We'll just take a quick swim, no one will know," Mizu said as he hoped Halia would come too, he wanted to swim outside the kingdom, it was boring staying inside all day after all, and Halia had to agree to that, at least a little bit.

Slowly a grin came across her face, and she suddenly shot past him and through the window before he could even finish. "Yay!!"She whisper-exclaimed. "Follow me! I can show you where the diver-humans were." Then she swam off, at a leisurely pace at first so Mizu could catch up.

"H- Halia! W- Wait up!" Mizu said as he was surprised by her quick pace out of the window and shot an arrow at the window again, the ice was transparent and it should look as a window from afar, but on a closer inspection it was clearly not glass. It was just to buy some more time until they got back. He smiled as he swam after Halia, excited to see where the human divers could be.

"Can't catch me!" She called, swimming faster suddenly. Then she swerved to the side where there was coral and rocks. the sun shone through the clear water, making the little area pleasant, along with light. "Here." She would say, sitting down on a flat rock. When he sat down as well she would say smoothly, "I won."

"You had a false start!" Mizu pouted, as he laughed and looked at the coral and the rocks around, with the sun shinning around there. The water was so clear and the area in general was quite beautiful. It was good to know that there were places like this outside the palace, which was quite beautiful. "It's quite pretty here, and it's not even that close to the humans! I don't get why dad stresses so much about them anyway," Mizu said, with a sigh as he let his hand nudge against Halia's hair, making it seem like a porcupine and let out a laugh. "T- That looks so great on you! You're so beautiful now!" He laughed, laying down on his back on the rock.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"How the heck did I manage to get talked into this...?" Lucas thought as he found himself in a full diving suit propped with equipment and an underwater camera. His friend, Matt, was going to join him as they were to dive and look after these "mermaids" together. Matt was more likely there to keep an eye on him, making sure he didn't slack off, even if Lucas had tried a couple of times already. He sighed, checking that the oxygen tank worked, before Matt pushed him into the water, making a loud splash noise. "Let's go find us some mermaids!" Matt said very excited as he lead the way and Lucas was seemingly following him, but definitely against his will. Being underwater brought up bad memories, and he would have preferred it if he could have stayed up above.

"Oi!" She squeaked, trying not to grin and giggle as well. Then she got up, put on a poker-face and pointed her finger at him. When she talked it wiggled up and down in a scolding manner, "That is not how a prince should treat a lady, young man!" After that she grinned and laughed.

"No. You're right," Mizu said and laughed as he swam behind her, ruffling her hair even more before he quickly swam back and laughed once again. "It is how a brother should treat his sister!" He exclaimed, looking at how silly she now looked and could not help, but to laugh at her silly appearance. "I promise Halia, you've never been more beautiful than you are right now..." He said struggling with keeping a straight face and holding back his laugh as much as he could, but he wanted to laugh so bad.

Her pouty face was more of a poker-face as she tried not to laugh as well. She crossed her arms and forced her lips into a pouty frown. It was really hard not to laugh, because she knew she probably looked hilarious. Eventually, if not further 'pestered', she would get her long hair flat again and then put it in a bun how she usually wore it.

"If that is how a brother treats a sister, I'll have to demonstrate how a sister teaches a brother.." Then she jumped up and flew at him, aiming to wrap her arms around his neck from behind and ruffle his own hair playfully with a hand.

"Oh yeah?" Mizu said and barely managed to dodge out of her grasp, but that was only in the last second. He laughed as her hair was still not on its way down, but it was looking a bit more like an afro than a porcupine now at the very least. "I don't think I've learned anything... You're a terrible teacher," Mizu teased smiling at his sister.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"Hey! Look!" Matt said pointing over to where Mizu and Halia was playing around, with his camera, but Lucas quickly put Matt's arm down not taking a picture and not making a sound. It was dumb enough for the person who feared the water to be in it, but it was even worse to see the creatures who had taken his mother's life. He gestured to Matt to be quiet, as he wanted to observe them a little bit. To make sure it was real, and to see what would happen if they did not do anything. Matt only nodded, thinking that maybe Lucas had a plan, but he truly did not.

"Hmmph!" The mermaid huffed, placing her hands on her hips and looking over at him. "I don't want to be a teacher, thanks for noticing." Then she lunged at him again, trying to do the same thing as she had attempted to do before.

Mizu was too busy teasing Halia, and did not realize she launched yet another attack his way. He was quickly grabbed by Halia, but he was still laughing as it had been a while since they had this much fun together outside the castle, it was a bit silly, but at least they were having fun together.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucas watched as they both played together, they were like kids, but only with fish tails. He grabbed his own camera, and snapped a couple of pictures when Halia grabbed Mizu, but stood idle by and watched. None of them had the equipment needed to capture or sedate them, so they would have to swim away eventually, but Lucas could feel the tension building up in him, he was scared. He was scared that they would launch an attack towards them, just like what happened to him and his mother.

Because it was already bright, and Halia was focused on playing with her brother, she didn't notice the camera flash behind her. She kept hugging Mizu from behind around his neck, but after grinning for a while, whispered in his ear, "You're it."

Then in a flash she was gone, ducking into a thick bed of coral. It was a tunnel, about 3 by 3 in diameter. Even her own lean, slim body was getting a little tight in the small hole, so she was guessing her older brother wouldn't be able to fit very well, if at all. She giggled again, swimming and dragging herself farther along the tunnel, until she could see the bright light at the end again. The exit of the tunnel was above a 6 foot drop into a really sandy area. Mizu wouldn't be able to easily find her here. At first, at least.

"H- Hey no fair!" Mizu said as he swam after her, but found it hard with the tight tunnel. Luckily for his bow, he managed to freeze some of the stone to make it wider as he barely squeezed his way through to the end of the tunnel. There was no fishes there, and no corals or rocks. It was a very wide and open area, but due to the sand the water wasn't as clear as it was back at the rock. "I'll find you, just you wait!" Mizu said teasingly, and began swimming around looking for Halia.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Let's go, we can't get through there without our equipment breaking," Lucas said as he grabbed a hold of Matt's shoulder, but he brushed it off as he swam towards the tunnel where he saw them disappear into. The equipment made it impossible for the two of them to move on, but Matt was daring. "I haven't taken a picture of them yet! You're not the only one to get praised by Dr. Owens!" Matt said with a bit jealous in his voice, as Lucas quickly swam after him.

Just as Lucas thought, the tunnel was too small for them to get through and Matt's oxygen tank was disconnected to his mask. Matt panicked as they made a lot of noise, and Lucas swam after him. He grabbed Matt and used the broken snake from Matt and switched it with his own, he pulled Matt's safety cord as Matt began floating up to the surface in a safe pace to avoid the pressure. Lucas was about to do the same, when he realized that his cord was broken due to the corals that had began tangling him in. He struggled, and looked up as he was running out of air. It was like deja vu, once again he was dragged into the sea... not able to get up again, but this time. There was no one there to save him.

Halia had heard Mizu following so she darted back up to the rocks, and stared when almost bumping into a human. She glanced up and saw another one floating to the surface. She looked back down at Lucas and glared. When she saw his camera she tried to snatch it away in a blink of an eye. She didn't realize the human was drowning.

"Halia?" Mizu said as he swam over to Halia, watching her hold what seemed to be a camera. He had never seen one in person, but his father had shown him countless of pictures what to avoid. As the older brother, he knew that humans could not breath under water, and it seemed as he was struggling against the seaweed. "Halia, we need to help him! He's dying!" Mizu said, but did not do anything as he looked to Halia, hoping she agreed to his plan.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------"What's this? Voices? I must be dreaming... maybe on my way to heaven..." Lucas thought as he looked up at Mizu and Halia, his vision was blurry and he was closing in on the edge of holding his breath. His consciousness was fading, and now he was surrounded by what he feared the msot. Mermaids, would they kill him? Or was it better to watch him drown, getting a taste of the human's own medicine, as he knew some of the things his father did, but that was only the best part he knew.

"Oh..." She said, eyes wide. She left the camera on a rock for later, but it was out of reach of the human to grab. She grabbed the seaweed and coral entrapping the human then pulled and untangled in in three seconds flat. "Help me get him up!" She told Mizu, then grabbed on of the human's wrist and began dragging him towards the surface. Halia was never known for her strength however, so it was kind of slow for the most part, unless Mizu came and helped too.

"I got it!" Mizu said and grabbed his other wrist, pulling and swimming towards the surface. How did humans swim with this much equipment? No wonder they were sinking like rocks, but why would he dive alone? Mizu shook out the thoughts, he needed to help this guy for now. Even if their father would kill them if he knew, at least kill them with words. Mizu managed to drag him onto the shore above water, and took off Lucas' helmet, was he breathing? How would he know? Was he alive... or...? "Is he okay?" Mizu asked Halia, as he examined Lucas with his eyes.

Halia stared at the human, and tentatively poked his cheek. Then she flinched away."Hey, could you go get that box thing I found?" She asked Mizu, meaning the camera.

"Sure, but be careful. Don't forget what dad has told us," Mizu warned Halia, a bit scared for letting her be alone with the human boy, but he was left with little choice. He went back into the ocean and began looking for the camera, and eventually found it on the rock. His got the best of him, as he examined it in his hands, accidentally taking a picture. The flash startled him, and he was about to shoot it, until he realized Halia asked for it. He began swimming back up to where he had left Lucas and Halia, as they were dangerously close to the humans, and needed to return home very soon.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lucas coughed up water, as he felt a light poke on his cheek. He needed air, he desperately needed air as he kept coughing up more water and taking in deep short breaths as he realized he was on the surface, the wet sand was the only thing which held his head, and his eyes were tired. He barely managed to open them to see Halia, but his vision was blurry and his mind was absent. "Thank you," He whispered, realizing it was his savior who was there, but he was too weak to say anything else.
