Futuristic The Deep Dark: A Space-Age, Galactic Freeroam RP

I don't know, tbh. Personally I'm still trying to decide of a Doomsday race would be allowed

Let's not do anymore doomsday type races. We already have a flood/tyranid mix, non-physical beings that are 4 billion years old, and a species that can adapt to whatever circumstances it needs. Please no more.

Not dead, at least not by a long shot. I'm having trouble scraping together the time to work on things, but after just a couple more races, ship classes and finalization of RP rules, we should be good to go. This is the calm before the 'friendly storm'. I'm working on a plant-like race right now, and after we come up with two more after that, we can shift our focus to the RP regs, and then we should be good to go. This certainly has slowed down to be sure, but things should pick back up as soon as we get started, so don't worry.

And @Yesman, while variety in races is nice, we need some races that aren't too over-the-top, like the Rooktan. They're exotic enough to be interesting, but they're not a possibly game-breaking race at the same time, and it would be easier to come up with races that are a bit more tame. I'll be working on the plantlike race and will try to have em' up by tommorow.

Yeah but the non physical race is mainly for setting and my character. Bit only adds to his history, don't plan on using it much to his advantage

Here's that plant race I was talking about.

Spina Solis "The Orchid"

Though their scientific name is Spina Solis, most people call this plant-like race the Orchid, due to the natural elegance many (but not all) of their people possess. The homeworld of the Orchid, Verdia, is covered in dense and varied foliage in every biome, including the oceans and deserts, due to the advanced plant life. Because of this, many Orchid also resemble plants one may see from different earth biomes, such as cacti, vines, trees, mosses and grasses.

The Orchid promote protecting nature and wildlife whenever possible, though prefer peaceful methods of problem solving. They have no unifying government, as they all coexist peacefully on Verdia. It is unknown whether there has ever even been a war among their race, and if there ever was, it was millennia ago, lost to the vastness of eternity.

The Orchid, while not an OIGA race, are often involved in diplomatic affairs and used as a political tool due to their skill in peaceful resolution of conflict. Despite the peaceful attitude of their race, however, the Orchid have evolved to survive a natural environment, and have many biological defenses. Some can manipulate and control vines, or fire razor tipped thorns.

The Orchid's peaceful mentality is a standard for the majority of their race, but as with every species, there are always the dregs of society, and due to the many unique skills they possess, they can also often be found in the criminal underworld.

This is, of course, a rough overview, mostly put out so we can all critique and refine them, as I want to get everybody's input before making these guys a thing. So, what do you guys think?

Pretty bog standard filler race, just like what you said. *Slightly exotic but not game-breaking*. So there will be many Orchid Diplomats in the galaxy?

Rooktan AI

History: 62 years after the Rooktan colonized the first of the fellow moons orbiting the gas giant Grookt, the first AI was made. Unlike many species, who would have been terrified by stories of the robot revolution and would either destroy or imprison the AI, the Rooktan treated them as fellow sentients, believing that the thinking, feeling computer programs had souls just like them. This would cement the friendship between Rooktan and AI, allowing both the prosper like never before. Through the work of both Rooktan and AI, they would discover FTL travel in record time, colonizing the stars together.

Coding: When the Rooktan AI were originally created, they were just computer programs based on ternary coding and computers, which themselves were designed with the Rooktan psychology in mind. These first few AI were bound to large computer systems, unable to move and truly interact with the world around them. However, the Rooktan allowed the AI’s to rewrite their own coding to improve themselves, as well to prevent any force from taking away their recently acquired free will.

The newer Rooktan AI programming is vastly more complex and secure than the first ones could ever dream of becoming. Their coding is made up of trinary, binary, quantum, and some yet to be defined computing styles in order to ensure that no being is able to override themselves. In fact, each Rooktan AI has its own unique coding that it writes and grows for itself, meaning each one is utterly unique. In addition to this, they have also undergone compartmentalization. This would ensure that even if a being could hack one of them, the AI would be able to shut down the hacked component of themselves while closing all possible hacking venues, thus ensuring their free will. They would then rewrite the original portion of themselves that was hacked in a different way, so as to be sure such procedures won’t happen again.

It is to be noted that Rooktan AI can share processing power between other Rooktan AI. This allows vastly better performance and abilities, and can theoretically grow exponentially when enough are together at the same place.

“Biology”: Rooktan AI most commonly reside in one of the numerous types of drones available for usage. Some AIs control entire groups of drones, directing them to do many tasks at once. These drones are made up of an artificial alloy stronger and lighter than titanium, as well as having a sensor setup that would normally be reserved for small ships. All Rooktan drones are capable of flight both in and out of atmosphere, as well as being hardened against EMPs and the various types of radiation found in space. Each drone also has access to laser weaponry, which is chosen over the normal Rooktan projectile weaponry because of material efficiency and versatility. In case a drone is threatened with destruction, AI’s are able to transmit themselves to other nearby drones or operating platforms.

Rooktan AI’s have a unique system to also buffer any hacking attempts. The central processor of the AI, known as the core, is housed completely sealed off within the drone or ship body it inhabits. Instead of being directly in control of the platform it inhabits, it uses a proxy instead. What this means is that it will transmit to a secondary system just outside of the sealed core, before that transmits to a third system that is hardwired into the operating platform. If a hacker were to try and hack the core of the AI, it would be stuck looking at the AI’s secondary systems from the third system before being purged.

It's about time we expedite this process, before someone gets too bored and leaves or the thread is assumed dead again. Besides the things you were posting about finalizing, we will also require concrete character sheet templates soon if it goes to plan.

After a delay possibly worthy of the DMV, (which I apologize for) CS submissions are up and ready to go! Hit me with em' and keep the character max to 3!

Depends on how you run it, details, etc. If it's not a titanic assault the size of a ship or something and you give me proper reasoning for it being severed from the hive mind the Devor possess, then I can't come up with a reason as to why not.

[/QUOTE]
Not so much severed as somewhat independant. A field commander who has a high enough intelligence to make on-the-spot decisions whenever the majority of the hive is out of range. One who thirsts for knowledge but serves his hive in any capacity required if him. Regular-sized.

btw: I'm going with Metroörbis for the colonian home-planet. Apparently colony-founders are called metropolis and this is a planet, so.

How long before did the war that eliminated the queen of the swarm syndicate happen? Currently, are the devor swarms being actively combated or are they lurking in the shadows waiting to strike again (or even somewhere in between-light skirmishes etc.)? What is the general population's thoughts regarding the devor threat?

@LeviathanL, I'll go ahead and update that then.

And @Quarantinetimer, I was thinking that the war would have happened about 200 or so years ago, and since then the Devor, while not hitting with their full force, have been assaulting outer colonies, sometimes taking some, but often losing them again. By citizens they've mostly been accepted as a fact of life, not too many that worried because they're a 'far away threat'.

Do we have augments/cyborgs yet? If no, is it too late to add them?

I also just remembered, I owe @Cry U 945 Void Walking. Is it too late to add that now?

I've got the main plot planned out to the point that this RP could carry on for a really, really long time, so dont worry about that. There's also gonna be subplots open via the news broadcasts and the like as well.

And onto voidwalking and cybernetics, I was planning to introduce a cybernetic sort of race down the line on the RP to keep things fresh and have some more things to throw at the players. Also, cybernetic implants such as eyes, prosthetic arms, etc, will be able to show up often enough as well.

As far as Voidwalking goes, as long as you're using it to carry sensical objects and not a fighter craft or something, then you can use it if you provide an explanation for its functionality.

Voids Walking:

Voids Walking is an ability wielded by very few individuals named Void Walkers. Walkers are able to open a portal to their own personal pocket dimension dubbed "the void".

Creating a portal could be compared to digging a hole in a wall. Because of this, creating larger or multiple portals can cause great fatigue for a Walker.

Usage:

Storage/Bunker

Because the void is inaccessible to anybody else (including other Walkers), it is primarily used as a personal storage space. Some walkers are known to also use the void as a safe zone.

Travel

Distance is not perfectly translated between this dimension and the void. As such, some Walkers who have mastered their ability are able to travel distances by opening a portal, entering the void, and then creating a second portal back into our dimension.

@Cry U 945

This was my idea for Voids Walking. Aye? Nay?
