“You can’t be a part of people dying,” Jennifer shot back at her with her head tilted, looking at Cali with confusion mixed with annoyance. “People are dying. Look all around you! We had a massacre, people protesting and becoming violent. People are killing each other, just look around!”
Jennifer, who was tense, eased up and took a deep breath in to try and relax and calm herself. She was rather in disbelief that Cali didn’t want to be part of “people dying,” when less than 10 minutes prior, people were dying In protest of Dave running the Mountaintop to hell. Jennifer had, however, heard Milly say before that Zelda potentially had a gun. While this would be good if she could get a hold of the weapon, this wasn’t enough. Jennifer needed to arm herself and those she trusted. But as of now, with Cali being the way she was, she didn’t want to give away more of her plan.
“Milly,” Jennifer said, turning to her. “Can you you do me a favor and get Archie for me?”
Once the girl had left, she turned her attention to Cali again.
“Look, I can tell by your pauses and your words that you’ve been through some shit out here where people died,” Jennifer said, walking up to her and putting a hand on her shoulder, looking her in the eyes. “I’ve been through hell since I was 12. My life has been hell, so I understand it. But something I’ve had to continually do is fight when my life, and potentially others, were in jeopardy. When people were dying around me, I had to fight for my survival and others. I had to do things I didn’t want to do.”
Jennifer removed her hand from Cali’s shoulder, and walked to the wall adjacent to her and leane on it. “The way I see it, you either fight to live her and try to do something, or become a victim when someone starts shooting again. Our safety is in jeopardy. We have groups out there like Haeredes Helios who want to kill us, a boogeyman who is trigger happy with nukes and has a fondness for abducting our people and turning them into freaks. We need unity and strength as a group right now, not trying to kill each other and burn this place to the ground. If my father was up, he too would want Dave’s ass out of power.”
In frustration, Jennifer sighed and shook her head. But, knowing emotional arguments can sometimes sway a person from agreeing with their view when on the fence, Jennifer tried to release all of her emotions, and try a sympathetic approach, one that was calm and even caring in tone. Jennifer walked closer to her and stood a few inches from her, but relaxed in posture, a small smile on her face, hoping her relaxed and caring appearance could help sway the girl.
“Look, I’m not saying that we’re going to get arms and revolt. That’s not my plan. But with how things are right now, we need to be able to defend ourselves. I’m going to try to solve this thing diplomatically if I can. Besides my father, I’ve known Dave long, before this all started and the world was normal. I’m going to try hard for that. But what I’m saying is that we need to be prepared to defend ourselves if we have to. I’m not saying to get arms and attack. I’m just saying we need to be able to defend ourselves from any threat, inside or outside of these walls. I don’t want to be a victim. I want for you, my friends, myself, all of us, to be safe here. The threats are growing. We need to be safe. No armed rebellions or revolutions here. Just precautionary steps to keep ourselves safe just in case. Can I count you in?”
