the chosen four

moony, wormtail, padfoot and prongs. a group of four, well known by many in the wizarding world. they achieved many things, and were around for some of the biggest moments in wizarding history.

now, history begins to repeat itself when a group of four students come together, despite their differences, to form yet another iconic group of friends — just during a different era.

unfortunately, with the good comes the bad, and rumours are spreading of a lost, but enchanted relic, a beast in the woods said to be created from frobidden magic, and the rise of dark wizards once again.

it's time for a new journey. one filled with as much love and friendship as it is filled with danger and betrayal.

let's begin, shall we?

the roles

the dark
legacy
they were born into magic.

their great grandmother was among the most powerful witches in the world, and since their family follows the matriarch, her last name is well known by all, and thus the legacy is no stranger to anyone.

they've always felt a little pressure to live up to their relative's expectations, but that's hard to do when there are rumours going around about their grandfather. rumours that talk about his jealousy over his more loved mother. rumours that mention how he created a race of monsters with dark magic

rumours that say one of those very monsters currently lurks within the forbidden forest.

they aren't sure about their lineage since they were left at an orphanage at birth.

there was always something different about them, and it became clear to them early on that they were capable of things that most kids weren't capable of.

it scared them at first, and they did their best to hide it, till they were approached by a wizard and told they were born with magic. they're soon introduced to a whole new world where they begin to feel like they belong.

of course, what they don't know is that they've been monitored since birth because their mother is a powerful witch with a dark past, and even darker intentions.

and right now, she thinks her child is dead.

the lost
child

the cursed
heir
they led a relatively normal life at first.

they didn't come from any magical background, but they took to the world easily once introduced.

what they don't know is that they've always been tied to something bigger — an ancient relic that was lost many decades ago: the ring of merlin. they are apparently a descendent of merlin himself, however almost everyone before them was born a squib. those who weren't never lived past the age of eighteen.

it is unclear when this curse began, or how it came to be, but many believe that the ancient relic can help them, if they find it. the ring of merlin is said to hold great power and prolong a mortal life — among other things.

they come from a family of deatheaters.

as a child, they were exposed to a lot of deatheater propoganda, but with the second wizarding war over and voldemort gone, things are different.

their father is in azkaban for his crimes, and they are left with their mother who is still prejudiced and believes in pureblood supremacy.

they don't quite believe the same thing, but family is all they've ever known.

they know that their mother is planning to pick up the pieces and restart the fallen movement, and they'll be expected to be loyal to the family, but they aren't so sure they can live up to that expectation when their heart clearly wouldn't be in it.

the dark legacy
5'4 / 163 cm
117 lbs / 53 kg
appearance

in combination with her small frame, mia's soft features and big doe eyes make her appear a bit younger than she actually is. her appearance may sometimes seem messy or even chaotic, for lack of better word, but it's a look that she happens to pull off quite well. she has a bit of muscle, thanks to quidditch, but her body leans more toward straight and skinny than curvy. regardless of whether she's in her robes or sporting some colours that are louder in comparison, mia tends to command the attention of people around her when she walks into a room, and she won't be found ever shying away from the spotlight.

attire

while attending classes, mia stays in uniform, often sprucing it up with something that's a bit more her style like netted stockings or a pair of clunky boots. when not in her hogwarts robes, mia can be found sporting more colourful clothing. she's fond of patterned fabrics and layered jewellery and she avoids wearing trousers or jeans as much as possible. stockings are okay, but she finds anything else that fully covers her legs to be restrictive. it doesn't matter how cold it is outside. mia will stand by her decision to wear a skirt.

modifications

mia's ears are pierced thrice on each side and she also occasionally sports a silver nose ring. she has no tattoos, nor is she particularly interested in getting any for the time being.

scars / markings

mia has a few small scars from quidditch accidents but none of them are worth mentioning.

health ailments

mia started getting migraines at the age of eleven, and she still occasionally suffers from them.

the dark legacy
personality
mia always had an incredibly loud personality. she would command the attention of everyone on the family estate with her cries as an infant, and when she grew a little older she would ensure that she was the center of attention at family gatherings by spontanously bursting into song. mia's actions have become less reckless over the years, but she still speaks in a way that demands a large audience.

the expectations of those she met as a child boosted her confidence, and while that briefly took a dive at the age of twelve, moving to a new school helped lift her spirits and make her bolder. like her mother, mia is kind and compassionate, and always willing to lend a helping hand. like her father, mia is loyal and protective, and willing to go to great lengths to keep any harm from coming to her loved ones. her ambition and competitiveness? those were traits that had been nurtured by her grandfather, but over the years, mia came to exhibit them differently from the way her grandfather always had.

mia always dreams big, and her resourcefulness allows her to pursue her goals without needing to step on people in the process. while she certainly can be cunning, she's not looking for the easy way out, and she's definitely trying to be less like her grandfather. she works hard and she makes sure people know it, even if her methods aren't always conventional. despite her dedication and determination, there are some times when mia simply has no control over her attention span. her big dreams come from an overactive mind, and her occasional migraines make it near impossible for her to concentrate on things for too long. and, while most of her decisions are usually thought through, mia still has a tendency to run her mouth, sometimes rubbing people the wrong way even if she meant no harm.

she is an extrovert on all accounts and thrives when she's around other people. talking happens to be one of her favourite activities, and being alone is something she can't always handle. mia is at her best when surrounded by friends and family, and she maintains a positive energy that is almost infectious, despite what she's been through. some may say her unending optimism is naive, and a trait not worthy of someone sorted into slytherin, but mia strongly believes that a good attitude is necessary in order to achieve success. if she doesn't go into things believing that she can come out on top, then she never will.

mia may have initially been known solely because of her last name, but she's worked hard to be seen as more than that. comments made about her grandfather just roll off her back now because she doesn't want to be remembered by her relation to someone so notorious. mia knows she'll be successful in the future all on her own, but who said she can't have some fun along the way?
likes

hot chocolate, quidditch, crystals, collecting tarot cards, duelling, stormy weather, stargazing, christmas (and most major holidays), sour candies, her assortment of colourful bandanas, muggle sports, singing & music in general.

dislikes

needing to do a lot of reading, losing, discrimination, bullies, dark magic, headaches, hot climates, her visions sometimes, sitting idle, being alone, family pressure, arrogance, coffee, being bossed around, rumours.

hobbies

mia has enjoyed tarot readings ever since she learned all about it in her second year. she finds them to be quite helpful whenever she needs to interpret a vision but she can be found fiddling with the cards at other times of the day as well. other than this, mia also enjoys experimenting with music, whether it be learning to play an instrument or working on her singing voice. quidditch is a hobby of hers as well, and she can often be found racing off to the quidditch pitch to get some practise in as soon as classes are over for the day.

fears

harm coming to those close to her, feeling useless in tough situations, not being able to live up to her family's legacy.

mental ailments

none.
the dark legacy
pureblood
witch / seer
wand

vine wood, 12 inches, with a phoenix feather core and a slightly springy flexibility.

pet

mia has a maine coon with an orange coat that she has named phineus. he was gifted to her shortly after her tenth birthday.

best class

divination is the class she has the most aptitude for, given her natural abilities, but when asked, mia usually insists that her best class is defense against the dark arts. she was taught quite a bit about defensive spells at a young age, and she proved to be quite a talented witch when it came to performing these spells in the classroom.

worst class

history of magic, without a doubt. classes involving that much theory and not much in the way of practical work are definitely not up her alley. her grandfather tried to make sure she'd go into her first year of schooling having already brushed up on all the important historical events in the wizarding world but since it never seemed to be as important as learning defensive spells and brewing potions, mia slacked off and just about passed the subject in her o.w.l's.

amortentia

ocean breeze, fresh sage, and cinnamon.

boggart

the form of her grandfather, though slightly taller and with his wand aimed right at her.

patronus

mia's patronus is a hummingbird.

quidditch

she currently plays as a chaser for the slytherin quidditch team.

animagus

mia will eventually take on the form of a hummingbird, the same as her patronus, when she officially becomes an animagus.

other

the inner eye — also known as the sight, the inner eye is a rare gift in the wizarding world, but mia came to learn that possessing it was more of a curse than a blessing. with the inner eye, mia is able to see into the future, but it's nowhere near as simple as it sounds because actions and decisions are complex and can change without warning. not everything mia sees is always clear, either. all her visions are open to interpretation and can easily be read the wrong way. despite being able to yield the most results in divination class mia still lacks mastery over this particular ability, and pushing herself to try and understand a gift that very few others possess is what often leads to her migraines.
the dark legacy
the birth of a legacy

TW: abuse
from the moment she was born, mia was always surrounded by people. her birth was something many prominent french witches and wizards looked forward to. when her cries filled château d'étoiles, for the first time, the entire family rejoiced. nearly everyone rushed to the sauveterre's family estate to get a better look at the baby girl they believed would go on to be one of the most powerful witches in the wizarding world. her arrival into the world was more revered than the birth of her grandfather, who failed to meet expectations, or even her mother, who was born out of wedlock. mia came from two prominent bloodlines. failure simply wasn't an option.

not that her parents ever made her feel that way. unlike the rest of the family, they wanted mia to simply live her life rather than do what everyone else expected her to do. their reassurances didn't have much of an effect on her though. pressure still poured in from everywhere else, and at a young age, mia quickly realised that she was keeping the family together. her birth allowed her father to reconnect with the family that originally shunned him for taking on his wife's surname, and it strengthened the bond between her mother and grandfather.

armand sauveterre was rarely an affectionate man, not even with his own daughter, yet he felt nothing but growing pride for the newest member of the family because when he looked at her, he saw an opportunity. he saw a chance to redeem himself and do with mia what he'd never been able to achieve with his daughter. he was determined to go down in history as having mentored one of the most accomplished witches of the century, and he was willing to do anything to make sure that happened.

the discovery of ambition

at first, mia was thrilled to be spending so much time with her grandfather and learning so many new things. he taught her about the history of the wizarding world, he told her about her great grandmother and how saddened he was that a witch as strong as herself died before mia's birth. her life had been too short, in his opinion, because he still felt like there was so much more for her to have taught him. still, he promised his granddaughter that he would teach her everything he knew, and that one day the entire world would know her name, if they didn't already. that they'd speak it in both admiration and fear, and more importantly, that they'd always remember who was responsible for raising her that way.

when mia's brother was born, the entire family came together again, but armand sauveterre didn't favour his grandson the way he did mia. he didn't believe he'd benefit from helping a good witch and a good wizard. why waste his time on two when he could work on perfecting one? a bond had already been formed so armand continued with it, and he was thrilled when mia, still so young, expressed a keen interest in learning from him. the pressure that came from meeting other family members and learning of their expectations for her was likely what boosted this interest, but at the time she enjoyed the attention. her grandfather's presence fostered a competitive spirit in her, and mia had goals in place years before she was to start attending school.

when her eleventh birthday rolled around, mia received her letter from the beauxbatons academy of magic. she'd been eager to enter her first year of school feeling prepared. she'd learned a lot from her grandfather and she was prepared to show it off to all the other young witches and wizards in her year. when she was sorted into bellefeuille like her father had been, armand sauveterre was pleased. it wasn't the house he'd hoped for, but it was also better than the house his daughter had been sorted into. the sorting didn't matter as much, though. mia already showed more interest in being the best than her mother ever did, and that was something armand could easily work with. to top it all off, mia seemed to be blessed with the sight, and this rare ability made armand even more determine — something he didn't think was possible up until he discovered her gift.

a grim realisation

things changed during that first year of school. all of mia's plans to outshine her peers went out the window the minute she made friends and experienced what life was like outside the walls of her family estate. everything she'd learned had been fun till she got the chance to explore the beaxbatons' castle and learn things with other kids her own age. mia was a little different by the time she returned home for the summer holidays after her first year, and her grandfather wasn't entirely pleased by this.

her competitive spirit remained, but it was aimed more toward trying to get a spot on the quidditch team during her second year if she could. she still had big dreams, but she no longer felt the need to impress other students with all she'd already learned in order to climb higher. her grandfather always said that the best way to get to the top was by staking her claim and proving right away that she truly was josephine sauveterre's great granddaughter, but mia believed she could get there without having to be intimidating. surely she could do it with friends by her side?

but, as armand was quick to point out, friends were a distraction. they would only bring her down and keep her from achieving her goals. mia started to realise that she no longer thought the same way her grandfather did, and that up until her first year of school, much of her life and her ideals had been shaped by him. she had no desire to slip back into learning new things when she'd been attending classes for months before that. she wanted to spend her summer holidays having fun and writing letters to the new friends she'd made, and when armand noticed that he was losing her, he became desperate.

his daughter had been a lost cause. he couldn't allow mia to become the same when she clearly had all the makings of a powerful witch. she needed to be reminded of her goals, and he needed to keep the promise he'd made to her all those years ago. so, armand became more strict. it didn't matter that mia was only eleven years old. he resorted to punishment in the form of magic because he believed it was the push she needed to get her to focus more.

because of the continued pressure from other family members, and the fact that she'd been taught almost everything she knew by her grandfather, mia was inclined to believe that he knew what was best for her. she said nothing about the sudden shift in armand's personality to either of her parents because at the time, she thought he was only doing it for her own good, so he could help her meet expectations and be the best version of herself she could be. mia wouldn't admit it till a year later, but the other reason she kept quiet was because she'd been afraid. it was, perhaps, the first time in mia's life that she made a conscious effort to keep something to herself rather than blurt it out.

a secret revealed

second year was different for mia. she tried to put her summer behind her and instead enjoy school the way she had the past year, but when an opportunity to get ahead presented itself, mia jumped at it — at the expense of a friendship. it was what her grandfather would have wanted her to do. it was something that would have made him proud, and yet when it happened, all mia felt was sick. she had aspirations, and she wanted to be able to meet the expectations of the rest of her family, but this wasn't the way she wanted to do it.

the rest of mia's school year hadn't gone as well as she'd hoped. the children who were once her friends started to believe that she cared more about furthering her own agenda than she did about her friends. she was always surrounded by people, but she'd never felt more alone. she only felt worse when she returned home for the holidays because she believed she could make her grandfather see things her way, but the entire thing backfired.

armand didn't think that after last summer he'd have to deal with changing opinions. he was furious that mia couldn't stick to the beliefs she'd shared with him before she started attending school. in his eyes, that was what changed everything. in his eyes, the only way to get mia back on track was by taking matters into his own hands. he didn't believe she should return to school for her third year when he could teach her everything he knew on his own.

fearing that her grandfather might try to convince her parents to take her out of school, mia rushed to her mother and broke down, revealing to her the entire truth and disclosing how lessons with her beloved grandfather had changed ever since she returned from her first year at beauxbatons. her parents were enraged — both because of what had happened, and because they hadn't noticed it had been happening right underneath their noses. the situation escalated when her father confronted armand and it led to a standoff between the two. armand may not have been as successful as his mother, but he was still a strong wizard, and he wasn't against the use of dark magic. what resulted was mia's father being almost fatally wounded and armand going into hiding.

a new beginning

with mia's father unable to return to his job as an auror for the french ministry of magic, her mother thought it was best that everyone got a fresh start. châteu d'étoiles was locked up and the family moved to a much smaller residence on the outskirts of scotland. mia was set to start off her third year of schooling in hogwarts, and with her brother max turning eleven, he was set to start off his first year as well.

mia tried to put the past behind her as she arrived at her new school and was sorted into slytherin. many of the lessons her grandfather taught her seemed to continue running through her mind, and while she sometimes took his words into account, most of the time she allowed them to influence her into doing the opposite. mia made friends quickly, joined the quidditch team, and thrived in her new surroundings, but every now and then she'd be at the receiving end of a jibe that related to the various rumours surrounding her grandfather, and each year she'd hear something new — and awful — about him and his work. whether the rumours were actually based on facts or simply stories told in the dark, nobody really knew for sure, but mia knew firsthand what her grandfather could be like. she wouldn't be surprised at all if everything she'd heard about him were true.

despite being in a different country, mia continued to feel family pressure, but it was slightly different this time around. if anything, she felt the need to prove her grandfather wrong so she could show him that she could still live up to jospehine sauveterre's legacy by doing things her way.
the dark legacy
josephine sauveterre
great grandmother (deceased) : josephine, to this day, remains to be known as one of the most powerful witches in the wizarding world. she created a name for herself when, at the time, her family just about managed their finances by doing various tasks for the french ministry of magic. there's hardly a witch of wizard alive who doesn't know her name or her achievements in the field of defensive magic. she was a strong, hard-working woman, and even during her final days, she never lost her spirit.
armand sauveterre
grandfather (aged 59) : armand was the only child of the great witch, josephine sauveterre, and despite all of the expectations from his peers and other distant relatives, armand couldn't quite live up to the legacy his mother had left behind. he was careless, temperamental, and far too greedy. his desperation to be even better than his mother led him down a darker path — one he tried to eventually take mia down as well before he was forced to go into hiding. there are plenty of stories spread among the wizarding community regarding the outcast of the sauveterre family and many of them talk of his use of dark magic to do things most witches and wizards thought were impossible.
renée sauveterre
mother (aged 37) : like her father and grandmother before her, renée attended the beauxbatons academy of magic, but unlike them, instead of being sorted into ombrelune, renée was sorted into papillonlisse. this was not well received by her father, who believed he could fix his mistakes and still honour his mother's legacy — or be better than her — by being known as the great wizard who mentored another powerful witch from the sauveterre family. when she was sorted into the house that honoured kindness over ambition, her father believed she didn't have what it took to be a strong witch, and that she was undeserving of the saveterre name. renée never allowed such things to bother her. she maintained her vibrant personality throughout her childhood and went on to marry her childhood sweetheart. she does not care so much about mia living up to her great grandmother's legacy, but the same cannot be said for the rest of their extended family members.
hugo sauveterre (né dieudonné)
father (aged 38) : hailing from versailles, hugo dupont comes from a fairly well known pureblood family that is rumoured to be distantly related to french royalty. his family's wealth and status had an effect on hugo, to some degree. he felt the need to keep up appearances and be like the rest of his family, but hugo was kinder, deep down, and more compassionate, and these sides to him were fleshed out some more when he met and fell in love with renée saveterre. while his family was happy about the fact that he was marrying into a family with a strong legacy, they weren't so keen on him giving up his family surname, especially when renée didn't seem as ambitious as her grandmother or as cutthroat as her grandfather. hugo chose to ignore his family's wishes, and it resulted in him being cut off for a brief period of time. when mia was born he reconciled with his family, not knowing that they only reached out because they hoped that the youngest saveterre could once again bring honour and fame to the two strong bloodlines she was born into.
maxence sauveterre
younger brother (aged 14) : max is currently in his fourth year at hogwarts, and was sorted into hufflepuff. he shows a great aptitude for classes like herbology and potions, and while he's exceptionally bright, he's more interested in quidditch and goofing off with his friends — as any fourteen-year-old should be. mia knows that because of his last name, there are a few expectations from the rest of their family, but at the moment all of that attention is still on her and she intends on keeping it that way. she doesn't want him to experience the same pressure that she feels most days. max has aspirations to one day become a healer.

attire

eliza has never been one to experiment with the hogwarts robes, and her fashion outside of school consists mostly of modest, comfortable apparel. her wardrobe largely consists of neutrals and nothing particularly exciting. expect either a pristine uniform or a something layered, probably.

with her delicate features, eliza is considered pretty but not remarkably so, though she's limited more by her disposition than any physical aspect she's lacking. her smile is a sight for sore eyes, but her shy nature usually prevents her from commanding the room with her presence alone like her mother is able to. she might catch your eye while dressed up, but her profile is otherwise indistinct unless you choose to look closer.

02.

psyche

introverted on all fronts, eliza's probably the furthest thing from the life of the party. she's not at the party, in fact, and she doesn't particularly want to be at the party but if you invited her she wouldn't turn you down because she feels bad.

she's sweet, for sure, with a kindness that almost asks to be taken advantage of, but she's not a pushover simply because she's oblivious. eliza's quite aware of it, her intellect extending past just books and dipping its toes in the emotional aspect. she's no suave talker, but her sensitive nature makes it easier for her to empathise with others, and in turn, understand when they're not meeting her with the most honourable of intentions.

that said, she does try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, and even when she doesn't, her self-sacrificing nature leads her to forgo her own convenience to be helpful. you could call her charitable or you could call her a people-pleaser, but she unwittingly views it as a way to atone for her family's wrongdoings, blameless as she is. a result of the endless internal conflict between her love and her morals. she still closes up at the mention of her father (or anything death-eater related, honestly) except around her mother, whether from shame or defensiveness is unclear.

there's no doubt that her family is her biggest weakness. she cares most about them, disagreements and villainy aside, despite her strong moral compass. they're a grey area solely due to her affection towards them, and her loyalty towards them is interpreted as an obligation to overlook all of their mistakes. her experiences at hogwarts has at least given her insight to justify her not buying her mother's beliefs, but it would be a lie to say she's completely free of prejudice. it's something she's still working on, but growing up in that environment does that to you, even if the biases lay passive in her subconscious.

despite having managed to at least grow past her timid first years, eliza's far from confidence and remains the opposite of sociable. most of her friends were people who approached her first and are likely to stay that way, though at the very least, her quietness now takes form as reservedness rather than meekness. she still holds people at arm's length, even those that have managed to breach the barrier for acquaintances, both due to concerns about disappointing her mother and a misjudged sense of self-worth.

that's not to say it hasn't improved, though, and she views herself a little more favourably these days, having been able to separate herself partially from her dark heritage through the connections she's formed and the validation of her talents in magic. though she was already courteous to all before, eliza's now able to make small talk first, though achieving a new level of closeness remains a battle fought one-sidedly. one thing that hasn't changed is her non-confrontational nature, and in the event of arguments or aggressive discourse, she's still quite likely to just give way or let others step all over her.

eliza's experience in turning a blind eye to her own feelings makes her particularly useful for staying rational even under pressure. for the most part, she approaches matters with her head than her heart, being one to favour planning ahead than working on the fly. it's rare for her to get overwhelmed when plans go awry, though adaptability isn't one of her strong suits despite her cool head. when it comes down to it, eliza is rarely the one formulating the plans, moreso catching the finer details where others might miss. though she's usually able to logically come to a good, safe decision in most situations, the involvement of her loved ones shows a different story entirely.

likes

sunlight, fireplaces, hot chocolate, fall, reading, libraries, lemon yellow, baked goods, fresh parchment, cloud-gazing

dislikes

strong perfumes, bitter foods, flying, muggle items, being alone in the dark, new moons, rainy days, SNAKES, her family's manor

fears

beasts, losing her family, failing school, becoming a death-eater

hobbies

eliza is an avid reader, though her preference for fiction leads her to rarely name this as a hobby out of embarrassment. otherwise, she's played chess since she was a child and has quite the talent for it, though within the hufflepuff house she is more widely known for her skill in duelling.

03.

history

afraid of the dark

eliza didn't always hate the foxwell estate. her earliest memories within its walls were the happiest she can recall: filled with the aroma of banana bread and butter pudding (the only things her mother knew how to bake) and the distant cries of her newborn baby brother. memories of running through the gardens, pulling her concerned father along; of asking her father what the faded mark on his forearm meant and for him to gaze upon it in what looked like longing before telling her that it was just "something from his past".

likewise, she hadn't always feared the dark.

her first encounter with its true form had been when her father's mark pulsed for the first time. eliza remembers it being a vivid black, so dark it had sent a coldness through her when she unwittingly caught sight of it. he'd left in a hurry and returned in the wee hours of the following morning, his face gaunt and his figure cloaked in gloom. the children were heard nothing of the night's events, though elijah later whispered to eliza while they curled up in their beds that it had been something their parents had been expecting. for a very long time, it seemed.

that night heralded the darkness that invaded slowly and menacingly, seeping into every corner of the house until it could no longer go unnoticed. in the following years, eliza rarely saw her father. in the following years, eliza rarely saw her father. he left on business often with little word to anyone but his wife, and even when he was on the estate, he avoided the company of his children as best as he could. her memories from those three years are filled with only fleeting glimpses of him in those dark garbs, accompanied by a chilling absence of emotion in his eyes when they weren't hidden by the intricate mask that scared her more than it should.

her father had become a different person, and timid as she was, eliza dared not ask more.

she has a distinct memory of peering out the window shortly after her father had left, dressed in his black robes once more, meeting his friends just outside the door—for they were only ever greeted outside the manor, never let in— when they had caught her gaze, the eeriely blank stare that returned had her shrinking away from the glass.

scared to look

it wasn't long after that the darkness became unbearable. the atmosphere of the house grew dreary, with curtains always drawn and the too-large manor far too silent. her mother never baked again and her demeanour flip-flopped between loving and stern and a much colder version of herself. hailing from an ancient, highly-respected pureblood family in france, her mother's beliefs with regards to blood purity had been cemented even before she met her death eater husband, and though her and her children were otherwise uninvolved in the dealings of the dark wizards, it was essential they understood what values they should maintain.

as elijah's enrolled in hogwarts (a slytherin, much to katherine's delight), their mother began "educating" them on the power of their elevated blood status. how it affected the way they carried themselves and the manner in which they viewed and treated others.

her words were said with a delicate but ironic amiability, the way she spoke of the muggle-borns holding much more malice and disgust than her tone might suggest. they were on the cusp of the dark lord's victory, of course, and it was of utmost importance they were not caught mingling with the wrong company.

except, there was no victory. voldemort lost, killed by the boy he had tried so desperately to kill countless times before.

an event that was celebrated by the wizarding world was met with grief and anger by the now-matriarch, the newspapers reporting the joyous end of the war discarded in a fit by the fire. piecing together the scraps that hadn't yet been burnt by the flames, it was then eliza began to understand what her father had been up to.it was a horrifying sentiment, one that she berated herself for even considering, though her father's convenient absence during the last few weeks was evidence enough.

elijah returned from the school not long after, greeted coldly by his mother and anxiously by his younger siblings, who were still hoping it was just paranoia. he had been evacuated through the tunnel, but their father had been there. had snuck into the hallways and grabbed him by the shoulders, warning him to leave when he was able to. he disappeared shortly after, but his dress had made it clear which side of the battle he stood on.

and it seemed, kieran had fought with the death-eaters till the very end, eventually hauled off to azkaban with the rest of voldemort's followers. the tale was devastating to eliza. her father had been servant to a murderer— perhaps even one himself— but it sent a pang to her heart that she might never see him again. never be able to ask him why, nor know why he had chosen evil over his family.

the pain of the incident confined her to the bed for a week, struggling with a severe fever brought on by heartbreak. though her mother spent a good part of the week by her bedside, the glimpses eliza caught of her while drifting in-and-out of consciousness made it clear her mother's thoughts were elsewhere.

disgrace of the family

her letter from hogwarts was not one she was happy to receive.

elijah was a fourth-year by then, a well-respected student with good grades, and her mother had the same expectations of her. "you'll do fine," elijah told her as they shopped for her supplies, "don't worry too much about what mum says."

it was hard not to worry, when katherine spoke so fervently of the expectations she had for her children in reputation and achievement. it was a standard elijah had smashed through the roof and eliza was willing to work hard towards, but she was deeply worried she'd end up failing to do so, especially when she felt no real agreeability to her mother's preachings.

and of course, there was the matter of her father.

it seemed she was the only one of the siblings still bothered by the incident years prior. elijah held a neutral view towards their father, while ezra's leaned towards a negative one but both were happy to neglect ever mentioning him. admittedly, criminal as he was, she still missed him terribly, though no amount of affection might condone the sins he had committed.

eliza was thankful that she could still speak kindly of her father with her mother, though she had never been formally associated with the death-eaters, it was her clear, even after their loss, where her allegiances lay. nobility and pride were still her utmost priorities, a belief she was still actively trying to cultivate in her children.

eliza was a near hatstall, having argued with the hat that she was a slytherin, like the rest of her family, despite the hat's insistence that she was a hufflepuff through and through. their beliefs are not yours, it had chided, before promptly proclaiming her a hufflepuff. her sorting should have brought her dismay, but eliza found herself strangely comforted by the result.

her mother was predictably furious, however, as she so thoroughly informed her daughter of through several, passive-aggressive letters. christmas dinner her first-year was spent at an incredibly tense table, with eliza not daring to say a word while her mother made her disappointment quite apparent. elijah did eventually manage to persuade their mother to calm her wrath, though it didn't stop eliza from feeling ashamed at a decision that was, to her merit, something she'd tried to oppose.

elijah's mediation would save eliza from her wrath when they returned for christmas, though katherine still finds it necessary to

eliza takes solace in the fact that she probably softened the blow of ezra being sorted into ravenclaw just two years later.

daughter of a crook

despite the outwardly warm welcome from her peers, eliza wasn't oblivious to the discreet whispers of some of her schoolmates. her father had never been a highly-ranked death eater and as such, but those that did know of it tacked it to her name the moment they found out. it was minor, really, and never amounted to any ostracisation, but enough for the already-timid eliza to become even meeker and more anxious than ever.

her first years at the wizarding school dreadfully lonely by her own choice; she was initially afraid of being confronted and forced to produce an explanation for her family that she didn't even know herself, though her subsequent apprehension to interacting with others was a truer result of her mother's upbringing.

though blood superiority was a belief she didn't buy, it stuck stubbornly at the back of her head and reminded her of how forbidden it was to be mixing around with the muggle-borns and blood traitors. there were a number of purebloods in hufflepuff, but eliza would rather have none of them than pick and choose— it was reason enough for her to stay under the radar, forgoing the social aspects of school life to focus solely on getting those good grades to keep her mother satisfied.

and good grades she did get, saving her part of the earful she was bound to receive every time she returned home. eliza proved to be as talented a witch as the rest of her family, with a result slip and intellect you might associate with a ravenclaw instead. where she lacked in aptitude she made up for in sheer hard work and coupled with her kind nature, earned her a spot in the good graces of both her classmates and teachers.

she became known within her house as the go-to for homework help, with the small, polite requests for her notes or even tutoring for the younger students one she couldn't find in herself to turn down. her little acts of thoughtfulness brought her scorn from old family friends who shared her mother's conservative views but had her dormmates confident of her character, doing their best to win her over by reciprocating.

it was after her second year that eliza abandoned her academic-only aspirations, eventually won over by their zealous attempts. despite the newfound closeness, however, the steps they had managed to make were remarkably trivial from a wider point-of-view. the result was a group of people eliza cared enough about to call friends (with the word used loosely), but the guilt of doing so

as a whole, eliza can quite certainly say she's enjoyed her time at hogwarts thus far. she was elected as a prefect in year five, a position she was uneasy about doing well but has since grown into well. heading into her sixth with beautiful O's for her 10 O.W.L.'s, eliza's focus should be on producing the same kind of results for her N.E.W.T.s, but her attention has been divided.

the hushed whispers at the estate had reappeared over the last summer, with faces both from fragments of her childhood memories and completely unfamiliar hovering around the estate. her mother hasn't mentioned anything to her children thus far, but eliza is positive she's planning something.

the manor, draped in darkness, has begun to seem even more ominous than before, and to say she's concerned is an understatement.

Harper, despite once glowing with much more excitement in his earlier years at Hogwarts, has receded into a shell of himself. His sudden growth spurt in fifth year has left him a little awkwardly built, his once stocky figure now filling out a bit in odd places. Gangly legs, but beefy chest and arms. He looks almost as if he’s yet to fully extend, and might gain another couple inches. Across his face, shoulders and arms are a litter of freckles that frame his jawline and cheeks. His eyes are a light brown, bright in the sunlight, and his dark brown, nearly black hair usually falls unkempt below the eyebrows and just over his ears, sometimes annoyingly cascading into his vision. He currently barely grows stubble, which at the moment luckily doesn’t bother him.

attire

Lately Harper has prioritized comfort over style, though in his earlier years at Hogwarts his friends did push him to try a little more fun color, always throwing fun items of clothing for him to try on at trips to the Hogsmeade shoppes. Now, those pieces of clothing sit at the back of his wardrobe and instead, he reaches for neutral colors and simple clothing, aside from his robes. He’s not often seen without his brown satchel that carries most his studies and art supplies. More recently, he's often got his hood up underneath his robes or some sort of knit beanie on.

scars / markings

Beneath his collarbone is a jagged scar that drags down to underneath his ribs, and one that seems its twin along his right calf and down to his ankle. Aside from that, there’s an assortment of small scars that show proof of a less than gentle childhood. His right thumb is more crooked than the left after a bad break, so he holds his quill a little awkwardly.

health ailments

He has the slightest limp in his right leg due to his injury in the summer leading into fifth year.

personality
After the events that occurred over the summer leading into their fifth semester, Harper has become a different person. In his first years at Hogwarts, though shy, he was eager. His hand always shot up in classes, he gained quick popularity for his growing skill on the Quidditch field, and his friends pushed him out of his introverted shell. He won Ravenclaw plenty of points for his quick wit, desire to soak up knowledge, and excellent work ethic. The change from living in an orphanage with no hope or prospects to Hogwarts, where suddenly everything was available to him and more, had an extremely positive effect on him. His challenge-starved mind bloomed, and he excelled in magic.

But when fifth year began, the Harper that came back was a different person. He no longer had any desire to socialize or participate, and became a shadow in the back of every class. Save for his participation grades, Harper still clings onto his studies, because it’s the one thing he has left to hold onto, but otherwise, has become a hermit. Anyone who attempts to come near is usually met with a gaze glaring daggers, and the once bubbly Harper, a friendly face in the hallway, a jokester on the Quidditch field, has gone.

Beneath the fear that Harper now lives and abides by, the fear of himself and what he sees of others, and the fear of what lurks in the dark waiting to harm him and those closest to him, is a bleeding heart. Harper has never wanted anything more than friendship, connection, and family. Though he longs for that feeling again more than anything, he’s afraid of what will happen if he lets anyone else in, so for now, his plan is to graduate Hogwarts with the highest honors possible and the most knowledge he can, to make something of himself in the wizarding world, something that can protect himself and his future.

the lost child
haunted

As a near newborn child left at St Jameson Home for Boys, Harper knows nothing of his origins. He was left with no note, no talisman, just a baby in a basket. He was named by the orphanage, and that is where his life begins.

As is typical of a rundown orphanage in the middle of nowhere, the conditions were less than stellar, and with each child a host for their own personal demons and doubts, these years were unkind to Harper. He was frail, shy, and more than anything, alone. In the early years of his life, Harper found it hard to understand why he had been left like that. With nothing to connect to, no one to truly care for him, and with bullies rampant, Harper would consider his childhood a very unpleasant time. This unpleasantness was aided by all the strangeness that surrounded him. Magic teemed from his fingertips from early on, the dull landscape around them coming to life in Harper’s presence. The other children didn’t understand why flowers blossomed, animals came calling, and the other strange circumstances surrounding his upbringing. All they knew to do was hate him for it, and with no one to explain why this was happening, prospects seemed dim.

Luckily, there was a soul there that saw past the boy quivering with fear. A boy his age by the name of Liam shielded him with a fierceness from the moment he came to the orphanage. The two become fast friends, and unlike the other children who feared what Harper seemed to be able to do, Liam embraced it wholeheartedly. Though he was a muggle, and neither understood what Harper was capable of at the time, the two ten year olds delighted in their shared secret. The little moments of whimsy got them through many tough times, and without Liam, Harper knows he wouldn’t have made it.

In retrospect, they thought they were being careful. The two boys only played magic when they were alone. But Harper didn’t know that despite how alone he had always felt, someone was always watching. And that person watching didn’t like how comfortable Harper had gotten with his magic. One day, Liam was gone. Adopted so suddenly that Harper hadn’t even been able to say goodbye.

No note. No talisman.

Not long after, a ray of hope shined through the blanket of darkness that seemed to wrap itself tighter around Harper at every opportunity. For the first time in his life, the mail box had a letter addressed to him. And it was the letter.

His life was forever changed. He wasn’t alone, and all of this amazing magic, the one thing that had made his life worth living, surrounded him at every corner. He only wished he could bring Liam to see it, or at least write him some letters. Still, Harper knew this was his chance to turn his life around. Free from the damning environment of the orphanage, he plunged himself whole heartedly into the wizard world, soaking up as much of it as he could. He had never thought himself as smart or clever like Ravenclaws were supposed to be, but he grew into his house quicker than anyone would expect. Harper was hungry. For magical knowledge, to experience it all and grow more versed and powerful, to bring his childhood fantasies to life, to foster growth in the one thing that allowed him to grow. And more than anything, he was hungry to belong.

For a time, he truly did.

He had his own little magical moment on the Hogwarts Express, a random encounter of three other young wizards in a crammed train cart fostering a true bond. With them, Harper grew out of his shell, the wall he had built to protect himself melting away. Erin, Noah and Meredith were the best friends he could have asked for. They encouraged him to try out for Quidditch with them, and he made the team. They all made their respective teams, actually. They studied together, practiced together, explored together, and there was never a moment when they shamed him for his non-magical history, though they did enjoy his mind-blown reactions to a few certain things. (The talking paintings, specifically. With which he would make conversation with way too long.)

As the years climbed on, Harper and his friends became pretty familiar faces for the rest of the student body at Hogwarts, especially with their growing skill in Quidditch. The game’s commentators always loved to poke fun at their cross-team rivalry. During these years, they even all took turns inviting Harper to their homes for the summer, bickering over who would get to house him. His life had never been filled with so much joy, and well… magic.

Until the summer leading into fifth year.

They were all sleeping over at Noah’s house in the countryside, pitching tents, roasting marshmallows and laying beneath the stars in a campground close by. They were supposed to be alone. They were supposed to be alone.

That night, Harper realized he had never really been alone. And not in a good way.

Not many know what happened that night. The only thing that’s certain among the swimming rumors is that Harper is the only one of that famed friend group who returned to Hogwarts. Some say it was werewolves. Others say it was the Dark Lord. Come the start of the fifth year, Harper quit the Quidditch team, all his extracurriculars, and retreated into that shell that he’d left behind. All that had bloomed, wilted.

None could seem to get a full story out of Harper, much less talk to him. But after that night, after all that occurred, some repressed part of Harper had awakened, much to the chagrin of the person trying to keep it at bay. People’s minds seemed that much more open to him after the event, in a way that was at first, startling. But once he had discovered the talent for prying into minds, it scared him. He was almost too good at it, like it had been waiting to erupt from within him, and it only drove him to isolate further. The once golden Chaser of the Ravenclaw Quidditch team became a total recluse.

Now Harper spends most of his days holed up in his room or some private space, nose buried in a book or hands muddied with charcoal. If anything, he’s devoted himself to his studies more obsessively, trying to milk Hogwarts for all it has to offer in the educational sense now that the real magic for him feels gone.

the lost child
liam hughes
muggle - harper’s childhood best friend at the orphanage who was suddenly adopted when they were eleven. harper hasn’t seen him since and has no idea where he is, but he hopes he’s living a happy life with a loving family.

erin meister
hufflepuff beater - erin dropped out of hogwarts before the start of her fifth year along with the rest of harper’s friend group. she was a bubbly young woman with an affinity for animals and excelled in care of mythical creatures.

noah judson
gryffindor beater - noah was a hard headed lad, both physically and emotionally, always a bit too eager to get rough and tumble, but he was a gentle being at heart and always looked out for his friends. he excelled in quidditch and flying but was often tutored by harper in more complex subjects.

meredith castarone
ravenclaw seeker - always one to give Harper a run for his money, meredith was a tried and true ravenclaw stereotype, too smart for her own good, and quick as a whip with defense against the dark arts. her small and nimble stature made her an excellent seeker as well. there was rumored to be some romantic feelings shared between her and harper..
