Okay, let’s start at the top. The Protector is gone. I’m not sure when it happened, the other guardians don’t know. We just woke up one morning, and where we would find his expansive, placid presence, floating in our minds, now, there was a void.
Wait, that’s not the top, let me go back. We are guardians. Where most guardians you know guard buildings, or goal posts…we guard the essence of humanity. Things like Joy, Hope, Dreams, Truth. We protect everything good and light in humans. We keep it for you, and when you need it most? We can remind you that it’s there.
The world is much larger than you know it to be. Oh sure, it looks the same, mostly: your school, your house, that one café that sells the best mocha latte in the whole city…but there’s more. Those monsters and spirits you read about in fairytales and old stories? Oh yeah, they’re real. They are real annoying, real mischievous and sometimes…real dark and really hungry. We keep you safe from those too, and for the most part, we keep them in line. Now, not all the spirits are bad, some help us. They look out for you too, especially if you believe in them.
When our work is done, we go back home, to The Blue House. You walk in and it’s a house, not unlike any other, but each and every room is a little pocket dimension, built to keep one guardian. Now, the thing is, since the morning the Protector vanished…there are now several new doors. None of us can open them, but somehow, we know there are new guardians out there. We must find them, and train them, and we have to do it before the forces of darkness…find them first.
This Rp takes place in present day and currently, is situated just off the university campus of a large, diverse city.
People from all over the world have come to call this city home, and so have many peoples and creatures from their folklore. Good and bad.
The world of spirit and the world of dreams are somewhat closer to this reality than we think, and the guardians can move between these worlds with ease.
The Guardians
They classify as spirits, but they have physical forms in the human world. Their powers transcend all the worlds that exist. They are tightly connected to humanity and exist to help both people and spirits, reminding them of their virtues and protecting them from dark forces.
Generally, every guardian has a human form that they take to blend into the human world, however many guardians have the ability to take other forms.
There are no guardians that work against humankind. Guardians that strive to harm humanity tend to lose their powers, or become dark spirits themselves, and lose their connection to The Blue House.
Comparatively, Guardians are powerful spirits, and they have the knowledge and ability to travel between realms, with the help of their magic house.
New guardians
Recently several new doors have been added to the house, which must mean there are several new guardians. There isn't much information on how to find them however, and they only have a few clues:
1. The guardians must be human, or, recently human. One can only become a guardian if one has passed on from the mortal realm. These people may not yet know that they are dead, and care must be taken not to frighten or shock them.
2. They will begin to manifest guardian powers and assume control of the virtue they stand for.
3. They can enter the The Blue House and use the icons.
The Protector
The oldest and wisest guardian, and generally the most powerful, becomes like a sage, and obtains the title The Protector. This being radiates light energy and can lend power to the guardians for particularly difficult battles. The Protector is a mentor, trainer and friend, and a very significant figure in the lives of the guardians. This being takes many forms, and usually takes a different form when interacting with each guardian, representing something in their past or something they value. Without the protector, the guardians are shaken.
Spirits and monsters
These creatures can be almost anything from myth or folklore. If you want to choose some creatures to add to a story arc, lemme know what they are and what they’re powers are, so I can work them in without them being too OP for the characters. Some examples:
Celtic fairies: they have their own realm, and adhere to a strict set of rules. They have a fondness for kidnapping people who break them, whether they know the rules or not.
Japanese yokai: I realize this encompasses a great many creatures, but the ones that are not practically gods are pretty much all fair game: the kappa, tengu, kitsune, tanuki, kasa-obake and so on.
Slavic/ Nordic folk creatures: Trolls, Nisse, Huldra, Domovoi, bannik, leshy, you get it.
You can also play as one of these creatures or spirits, though please accept your powers will be very limited compared to the guardians.
There will be no mythological heroes or gods. Those are not playable characters. In this world, if they ever existed, they are all long gone.
This world is basically our world, with all the countries and peoples therein, however the city in which the story begins is fictional.
The Blue House
The house that the Guardians call home. It is very unassuming on the outside, save for it's vibrant, cornflower blue colouring. It looks like a shabby old college house, but the interior is much larger and very modern. The house has all the facilities a house would need, however the rooms upstairs are special: each room is a tiny pocket dimension built to house the ideal environment for its guardian. Recently several new doors have appeared, and the guardians suspect there may be some new additions to their unusual family.
The Blue House has a few magical features: firstly, it can appear in any realm, usually taking on some sort of disguise to blend into that world. It also has a handy recall feature, so no matter where the Guardians are in the worlds, they simply need to tap the blue house icon on their phones and they will be automatically transported back into the house.
If the phone is ever lost, there are emergency icons hidden throughout the worlds. The guardians know of at least several, however the magic of the house sometimes surprises even them.
The city of Newdeiy
A fictional city situated somewhere in North America. It is open and greener than most cities, with wide parks, gardens, floral walls and rooftops, and overgrown canals and underpasses.
There is a subway system, street cars and buses, most run on electricity. The most central areas of the city have a ban on cars, and people have the run of the spaces there so the squares are filled with temporary stalls, buskers and travelers selling handmade crafts.
There are several districts, The South shows off a business district, with tall skyscrapers built around open spaces to let the light filter between them. The high-end district is to the East, with exotic cafes, art shops and large houses. The West sports the poorer communities, still vibrant with culture and music. Most of the walls are covered in art and the houses, though small and rough, are often painted bright colours.
Throughout the city there are many small communities representing cultures from all over the globe. One who knows the city best could find absolutely anything within these little pockets of the rest of the world.
The university sits almost at the city’s heart and boasts a large campus with many buildings spanning at least 200 years of history.
The oldest buildings belong to the anthropology and physical science departments, which house vast collections of ancient artifacts in partnership with the city’s museum. The newer buildings belong to the business and medicine faculties; large concrete structures with rounded, modern touches. All the buildings, old or new encircle the main campus where there are three round auditorium buildings spread on three sides of a vast garden. There are open spaces here, well-kept flower beds, sculptures, a dog park and the greenhouses, which house an array of exotic plants and provide a warm and exotic respite through the city’s snowy winters.
The Spirit World
Looks much like if someone were looking at the real world through coloured glass, and that colour changes with the energy of the location. This world is not populated by humans. Living humans exist only as faint spots of colour or light, and very rarely do they manifest as anything more. This world is populated by spirits and ghosts. Those that know they have passed, those that have yet to learn their fate, and those spirits that have always belonged here. There are many intangible denizens of folklore here humanoid and nonhumanoid, and most of the time, they keep to themselves. When they are disturbed however, they have the ability to affect the human world.
The dream world: built on the thoughts, imagination and memories of living beings. This world can look like anything. The guardian of dreams has the ability to manipulate things in this world.
The Fae Realm
This world is a different place entirely, linked to the human world through places where nature thrives. The people of this world are sticklers for their rules. They cannot lie, they always keep their promises or fulfill their bargains, and most have a serious dislike of humans for the destruction they cause to the natural world. The realm itself is completely natural, bent into shapes to serve the people who call it home. The towns and villages are not unlike human settlements, though they are made entirely of living wood or shaped stone. The temperature is always mild in this world, and the weather changes only rarely, and sometimes by the mood of the folk to live there. The places in this realm are as varied as the human realm and filled with wild magic, which is much stronger here than the human world.
More locations TBA
- Magic is not all powerful, it is based on the will and imagination of those who wield it. It is much easier to affect oneself than the things around you, and almost impossible to affect another living entity. The guardians have the exception of being able to instill the virtues they guard into human hearts. Magic is always more powerful in other realms, like the spirit, dream or fae realms.
Shapeshifting: most guardians have at least one other form. Some choose to specialize in changing their face or their form entirely. Usually, guardians that choose shapeshifting have 5 essential forms, with others more difficult and either not perfected or else can only be held for a limited time.
Elemental manipulation: Being able to control elements like water, fire, earth or air is another common but difficult power. Guardians that choose this track usually specialize in one element. They can naturally command this element in the other realms as well and affect the beings within them.
Alchemy: The ability to change one thing into something else. In the physical realm this works on inert matter only, nothing living, and the energy it requires to change something depends on how different it is from the starting material. Example: it is easy to turn copper into silver, or ice to air, but difficult to change earth into cloth, or stone into wood. In the other realms it becomes much easier to control this magic, and sometimes, spirit energy or dream energy can be converted into something that can exist in the human realm.
It is possible for guardians to use more than one type of magic, but they are generally not as skilled in either than a guardian that focuses their attention on learning just one.
Have an idea for another magic? Lemme hear about it!
