Mephisto
The King of Swing

Skellbrieg is an ancient world nestled deep within the Endless Dark. Regardless of their skill and persistence, modern scholars simply cannot discern the origin of species. There are many thousands of tales and stories describing how life first started from a great golden seed, delivered here by godlike beings that now wander aimlessly elsewhere.
Relics of a time immemorial litter the landscape. Kingdoms rose and fell upon the backbones of these immeasurably powerful artifacts.
The Common Age (0 CA to 3819 CA) is unanimously observed as the single most stable time in Skellbrieg's varied and wild history. Technology and magic go hand in hand, becoming intertwined as cities become more advanced while still retaining a distinct cultural identity. With this in mind, there are several more Eras that must be observed.
The Ancient Age (-50,000 CA to 0 CA) encompasses the Old Wars and the fallout of what came before. This bloody time was defined by seemingly endless rivalries between countries, kingdoms, bloodlines, and entire species. It is also recognized as the millennia in which humanity rose to prominence as a world power, though also when it became obvious that full cooperation between its splintered tribes and clans was more or less impossible.
The Savage Age (-400,000 CA to -50,000 CA) is when the older species now dominating Skellbrieg first carved their corners from the mountains, hills, rivers, and forests. Along with the innumerable humanoid and non-humanoid species finding their identities, behemoths and giants began to awaken once more. Colossal in scale, they challenged the established elvish kingdoms and reduced many to ruin before being driven back beyond the horizon. Now they live in solitude, forever dwindling and sleeping.
The Epoch of the Sun Kings (-1,000,000 CA to -400,000 CA) is when the elves rose to power, spending their long lives dominating the world and warring with each other for dominance. Nhumrethaz, a powerful wizard among the high elves, made a bid for power and created his own kingdom not of the living - but of the horrifying undead. His ranks swelled and he threatened to overthrow Aenathrian the Seventh Sun King, but was stopped by the unexpected return of the dragons. Nhumrethaz would spend the rest of his immortal life perfecting his spells.
The Draconian Era (-300,000,000 CA to -1,000,000 CA) is often remembered for being the most recent Era to have no recorded history. The high elves described it as a tumultuous age when thought and reason were beaten out of the infernal tempest of wild magic and seemingly random chaos. The sheer havoc of this age is exactly what contributed to it having such a tumultuous history, with only vague remnants being remembered by the oldest high elf archives. It is known as the time when dragons and dinosaurs dominated the world rather than remain in their selected hunting grounds.
The Forgotten Era (??? CA to -300,000,000 CA) is the first of three “unremembered times” that scholars typically agree on, this encompasses the era responsible for bringing life to Skellbrieg from some unknown source. Ancient folktales insist on their respective species climbing from the earth or marching down from the mountains, to even walking from the rippling tides. Whatever truly happened has been lost to time, and perhaps will never be confirmed. The astounding variety of life on Skellbrieg and the rapidity at which it adapts to any given environment has astounded researchers for centuries.
The Titanic Eon (??? CA to ??? CA) is what eludes the pursuit of the mystery of life and forms the study of the stones that it supposedly sprang from. Geological maps have been made of entire mountain ranges that shouldn’t possibly exist. Seas open into cavernous depths with no feasible bottom in sight. Relics of civilizations that date back before even the high elves and the bloodline of the Sun Kings remain unsolved yet resolute. These bizarre places thrum with a distinct aura of power that has started and ended countless wars.
The Shapeless Eon (??? CA to ??? CA) is a time that few scholars even acknowledge to exist. Research into its vast potential has been limited for a purpose. The only evidence that it even occurred has been locked away in truly impossibly old temples either lost to the deep oceanic fathoms or smothered in natural disasters. Whatever long-dead secrets these contain are perhaps best left buried for the rest of eternity.
