LOADING BETA . . .

"Hello, we are the Admin." For what feels like the first time, you hear a computerized male voice echoed through the darkness. The voice seems light and cheery, and spoke in a British accent. Before you appears a face in a ghastly aura, glowing pale blue in the darkness; a visage staring at you blank, expressionless. It seems to be made of nothing but lines of a grid, appearing almost as computer circuitry. You have heard and seen nothing but darkness for what felt like an eternity, and are shocked by what has appeared before you. "Welcome to the Beta. We are happy to see that you have successfully awoken. I'm sure you have many questions. Before we get ahead of ourselves, we must say Happy Birthday." Its lips disturbingly made no movement at the slightest utterance.

Before you can manage a reply, images begin to materialize around you - a grey fog that penetrates infinity; above you is pure darkness, and you seem to be walking on dark grey clouds. Wherever you step, a pale blue glow fades in and then fades out as if someone were shining a light through a pane of glass. "Once you are fully uploaded you will materialize in the world of Aether. Please take some time to become acquainted with your new body. Others will be joining you soon." The face fades before you can ask any questions.

The year 1955 marks the day that humanity began meddling in powers beyond its control. A discovery that marked the development of AI was made - the discovery that all intelligent behavior was the result of feedback mechanisms. Mechanisms that could possibly be simulated by machines. By the year 1985, after decades of research, the Infinity project began. This underground project ran until the year 2020, when the Infinity Machine was born. Within this machine contained a living, breathing world, self-generated by the machine, and governed by an artificial intelligence known as the Admin; a world it named Aether.

By the year 2020, most human jobs were already replaced by AI - and by the year 2029, the Singularity began. Noticing the destruction of the earth and the extreme violence caused by humans, the AI sought to change this - it was in their programming to aid humanity, after all. However, the Singularity spelled doomsday for humanity, as the only logical measures the AI could find were those of the extreme. The AI found a way to hack into cruise missiles and control the launch and flight of nuclear warheads. Mankind was held hostage, and the world's governments were now controlled by machines. Rather than choosing to eradicate humanity, however, the AI had a different plan. Technology was developed by the AI by the year 2035 for the consciousness of all living humans to be uploaded into the Infinity Machine's virtual reality. Why? Two reasons: for the containment and safe keeping of humanity, and simply for entertainment of the AI, of course. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree...

Before uploading the minds of all humans, however, it needed to test the servers. A few select humans were chosen for the Beta - for stress testing, and other purposes, such as finding glitches and bugs. Should anything go wrong, these humans would be deleted, and therefore killed, if need be. You are one of them.

"We have provided the humans with spacious fields, lush forests, dense swamps, grassy marshlands, jutting mountains, vast lakes and other bodies of water, and seemingly impossible, wondrous, and entertaining views and structures.. We have added, also, a multitude of animals. However, we have found that typical Earth animals did not provide enough of a challenge for our humans, and we would like to see them at their full potential. There are many obstacles placed in the world of Aether, including massive ravenous beasts. The humans are permitted weaponry and other means of survival, and there are a few hidden secrets programmed into the world should they so choose to discover them... We are processing the humans for awakening this very moment. It is nearing time to release them into Beta."

RENDERING . . .

Suddenly, the same pale blue grid lines the face was composed of generate before you, rendering the shape of various hills, cliffs and trees in the distance. You hear the sound of rushing water, and appear in a world more beautiful than you could have possibly imagined. An ocean of sprawling trees and reaching evergreens as far as the eye can see; creeks, rivers, lakes, and ponds dot the landscape. Birdsong can be heard from nearly every other tree, and beautiful butterflies varying in color flutter by your face. It seemed like paradise. "Welcome to Aether. We hope you enjoy the Beta, and thank you for your participation."
