The Beasts

Unbeknownst to the citizens of Canada, Hawaii, and Australia, the Shields do not exist. There is no slab of rock holding these countries above the roiling molten magma of the Earth's core. Instead, they rest on the backs of gigantic sleeping beasts, put to sleep centuries before by the ancient Gods for an unknown reason. These beasts are the Fire Dragon of the Hawaii Islands, the Ice Giant of Canada, the Wind Cyclops of Australia, and the Water Snake of Atlantis. The Water Snake, turned bitter by millennia of nothing but thoughts of revenge on the Gods and the impudent humans that infested it's sleeping comrades, broke free of the spell cast by the Gods and sank the land on it's back. It now bides it's time at the bottom of a deep sea trench, waiting for the day the other beasts awaken.

Tasked with keeping Canada frozen and the Giant asleep is the Ice Wizard Covenant, represented by the members of Parliament. In charge of defending the continent from the rogue forces of the Elemental Beasts are the Beast Masters, also known as the Mounties, who are able to harness the power of the dormant Giant to summon creatures of ice. Prowling the wilderness and forests of Canada, where it would make no sense for Mounties to be, are the druids, usually in the guise of snow cats.

The Fire Mages are in charge of keeping the Fire Dragon asleep, and are represented by the State Legislature. The Beast Masters are members of The Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources. The druids, in order to avoid suspicion, can usually be found in the form of a bird native to Hawaii called the Nene, which also allows them to traverse the fragmented land with ease and speed.

To keep the Wind Cyclops asleep, the Gods employed the help of Air Conjurers, represented by Commonwealth Parliament. The Beast Masters are members of The Australian Police Professional Standards Committee,or the APPSC for short. The favorite form of Australian druids is the Saltwater Crocodile.

The Water Magii, residents of Atlantis, managed to escape their doomed city, along with their native Beast Masters, and spread out across the world. They teach their craft to anyone that will listen, as they believe this is the only way to atone for allowing the Water Snake to awaken, and throughout their lessons preach to their students about not letting the other Beasts awaken. But... that's exactly what's happening.

The Beasts are starting to awaken, to shift. Those who managed to contact the Water Snake through extensive and complicated rituals say he swears he has nothing to do with it, although he certainly is capitalizing on this opportunity. So what caused this change? Some say it's global warming. Some say it's something not of this Earth. Some say it's the Spell of Sleep starting to wear off. Whatever the case, it must be stopped. The Beasts must be put back to sleep. Or the world will never be the same.

You are children of the members of the organizations charged with protection and keeping the Beasts asleep, and have been studying with private tutors to prepare for the day you would replace your parents. Something is calling you, however. You have begun to have dreams of a sleeping figure, either encased in ice, wrapped in flame, suspended in water, or floating in the middle of a cyclone. Hallucinations of this same figure have begun to plague you in the waking world. A voice tells you nothing but to find and release them. And that is what you set out to do.

Other: None.

I opened my eyes, blinking slightly as they adjusted to the darkness of my room. I sighed and threw the bedspread off myself, heading downstairs and filling a glass with water. I thought of my dream, leaning against the counter and sipping from my glass. It had begun at the top of a long, dark flight of winding stone stairs that descended deep into the Earth. Several times I had the feeling of wanting to stop and rest, but as it was a dream I needed no such respite. After what seemed like hours of walking the stairs stopped, leveling out at a hallway whose walls were covered with strange glowing runes. They pulsed as I walked by, and I felt a wave of drowsiness overtake me. I pushed ahead, however, and after leaving the hallway in favor of a tall, domed room, the feeling faded. I quickly crossed to the other side and pulled open a heavy wooden door, like the kind you'd see in an old medieval castle. On the other side was a flight of stairs, candles standing in their sconces every couple steps, and at the top was a girl. She was encased in ice, hair suspended behind her as if blown by a wind. I shut the door and cautiously made my way up the steps, never taking my eyes off her. I reached the to and stood before her, tilting my head as I took in her features. Prominent cheekbones and a petite nose, full lips and...oh, uhm, no clothes. I quickly moved my eyes back up to her face...and found that hers were open. Then a voice spoke to me, and though her lips never moved I was certain it was her. 'Find me...', she whispered, the words seeming to resonate in my head. Then... I woke up. I closed my eyes and shook my head, depositing my cup in the sink. I had been having the dream for about a week, every night and never failing. I had no idea what it meant, though, and that annoyed me. I sighed and trudged upstairs, collapsing into bed and pulling the covers over myself. Maybe tomorrow would offer a new point of view...

i looked around and pulled my cloak closer making sure it doesnt fall. i kept my spell book close and sighed. my hazel eyes surveyed the area.

I stretched widely and heard my back crack several times. Sighing in pleasure,I took a shower, got dressed, and went to breakfast. "Hey.",I said nonchalantly, waving to the people at the table as I cracked a couple eggs and added some milk. There was my Dad,hurrying as always to get dressed for work,my Mom,tying his tie as he bustled around,my sister, twelve,on her phone, and my brother, eight, eating as fast as he could to get to the Wii. "Hi honey. Do you know where your father's shoe is?",Mom asked, and without looking up from the eggs in the frying pan I said,"On top of the fridge, like always.". Sure enough,a second later Mom called out a,"Thanks!",and a few minutes later I set two plates down on the table. "Why do you rush every morning? My class and your job don't start until eight.",I said, glancing at the clock. Seven thirty. "I rush because you never know what might happen. A train could go by. A tree could fall on the road.",he pointed out,and I said,"And that's why you configured our route to the train schedules and uprooted every tree from here to there.". It was true. The park around the corner now catered to about thirty trees, and had become quite the picnic place.

My Dad stared at me,then flushed and dug into his breakfast. I smiled at my plate and finished my eggs, getting up at the same time as Dad did. I wiggled my fingers over my brother's head, showering him with ice sparkles, and shouldered my schoolbag before walking out the door. I climbed into shotgun and opened my book to where I had left off yesterday.

i sat against a tree and sighed taking off my cloak. i had on a tank top and skirt with some brown boots. i brushed my hair some and stood up humming while putting my cloak in my bag. i walked around while reading my spell book and put in my earphones listening to "we are never ever getting back together". i danced some and sang to myself"~we are never ever getting back together! so you can talk to your friends talk to my friends talk to me! but we are never ever getting back together!~"

I closed my book as we drove into the parking lot, unzipping my bag a little to slip it inside. I hopped out of the car and was about to go inside when I saw a girl dancing and singing in the schoolyard. Seeing as class was about to start and, well let's face it, she'd probably be mortified if somebody saw her, I walked over to her and tapped her on the shoulder.

I smiled and said cheerfully, "Nope, my eyes have a built in filter for anything embarrassing. All I saw was some pixellation.". Not the truth, but she did say please...

i said"oh ok..."smiling. i looked at my watch and said"crap i didnt even eat yet!!" sulking. i sighed taking out a banana and a brownie from my bag."oh well..."eating them. "thanks gotta go!"running into the school.

I raised an eyebrow with a confused smile, following the girl at a much more subdued pace. There was still ten minutes 'til class, and seeing as we all went to the same class... I let out a chuckle as I pushed the door open.

I walked through the classroom door, catching a glimpse of the girl from earlier as I sat down and pulled my book out. I read the intro again, reading the last sentence aloud as always. "And so, by shaping your mana and aura you can, in theory, control the very fabric of spacetime.", I read to myself under my breath. Sure it was only the theory part of the book, but that last sentence was one of two things that always motivated me to keep learning magic. The second thing? The teacher's entrance. My hair was suddenly blown backward by an icy blast of air as a flurry of snow blew in through the open window. The snow swirled at the front of the class before clumping together and solidifying into the teacher, Mr. Petrikov. "Alright class,we have a lot to cover today, so let's get started.", he said briskly, clapping his hands and smiling cheerfully.

"Okay, so first we're gonna have a little review of all different subjects. Ahhh...Yuki, spell to teleport up to twenty feet in front of you!", he says quickly, and Yuki answers tonelessly, "Blink. This spell also frees the caster from any stun or bond spells.". Mr. Petrikov smiles and says, "Very good Yuki. Hmmm... Mikuru, use of the Mirror Image spell!". Ms. Asahina makes a small noise of scared surprise before stuttering, "C-C-Creates three c-copies of the caster n-nearby to b-b-bl-bludgeon the target.", and Mr. Petrikov prompts, "And Mirrors can't use magic because...?". "People without souls can't access the Beasts' energies?", she asks more than answers, but Mr. Petrikov nods in approval anyway. "Next... Jason!", he barks, and I snap my attention back to him, "What is the advised strategic use of the Time Warp/Deep Freeze/Frozen Orb combo?". "Use Time Warp to slow enemies down and get as far away as you can. Just before the end of the Time Warp spell, encase a Deep Freeze in a Frozen Orb and send it toward your enemies. The Orb should get to them before they have time to dodge, exploding and spreading the Deep Freeze amongst them. This gives you five additional minutes to escape.", I recited, mentally smirking. I had read that on the ride over. Mr. Petrikov nods slowly, then suddenly turns on the girl from earlier. "Nichole! The strategic use for the Invisibility/Frost Armor/Blizzard combo!", he barks.

(Thank you! :) I'll go back and read all of the posts up until now just to know where you all are and then I'll jump in)

Mr. Petrikov's smile fell into an expressionless deadpan, and as was the case every other time somebody couldn't give an answer he fell back onto the last person he had questioned. "Jason?", he asked in a monotone, and I replied airily, "If you see an unexpected group of monsters, they're not smart enough to know about Invisibility. You go Invisible, cast Frost Armor so even if one of them hits you they'll be slowed, and then cast Blizzard over and over to bombard them from the shadows.". He nods in approval.

The alarm clock rang noisily on my bedside table, awakening me from my deep slumber in a fit of panic. I looked at the clock. "Oh no! I'm late!" I threw open the bathroom door and hurriedly took a shower before dressing myself and grabbing an apple to quickly eat on my way to the school. I hoped on my bike and, with my backpack weighing me down, my apple in my left hand, and my right on the handle bars, I peddled as fast as I could to the school. I didn't live too far away, but far enough to be even later than I should have been had my parents been able to drive me to school. As I approached the building I finished off my apple and threw the core onto the grass. "Oh well. An animal will make a decent meal of that soon enough." I slowed my bike down just enough to hop off of it and push it the rest of the three inches to the nearest tree. Bike racks were for ordinary people. I removed the bike chain from my bag and wrapped it around the tree and securely fastened it to my bike before running inside the school. I found my way to my first class and nervously opened the door. Oh great, I thought to myself, here comes the humiliation. Why must every single kid turn around to look at the person who arrives late? I entered the room anyway.
