?Work In Progress?
This is Earth, 200 P.D.
200 years after the mass digitization of the entire planet.
????????????????????????
? Year 2245 A.D. ?
Paradigm Technologies, a subsidiary company of Paradigm Gaming Inc, had recently revealed its full immersion technology, which was able to take a human body, and transfer all the matter into a body into digital information, and back, while retaining all integrity.
The applications were endless, and hopes were high for how the FI-Pods would impact the world as a whole.
However, being primarily a gaming company, the gaming industry was among the first to have a taste of the world shattering new technology. Eventually, a series of games were sold to arcades everywhere (the FI-pod was a bit I practical in the consumer household, and so the marketing focus was in gaming centers). The system was a giant leap from the Virtual Reality games that had ever-so-firmly rooted their place as the go-to gaming medium.
One game in particular had an especially strong impact, a game by the name of "Eternia" a Fantasy MMOARPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Action Role-Playing Game). Which was highly anticipated since its debut in that years E3 Gaming Convention.
However, an unforeseen problem arose. The scientists in charge of the project had overestimated how much of a load the internet itself could withstand, and the data from the users proved to be too much strain on the Internet as a whole, and excess players were booted from the game as a whole. and so the game suffered.
But this proved to be a short-lived ordeal.
The solution to the problem was simple. Create a new, stronger network, entirely separate from the Internet, devoted strictly to Paradigm Gaming's Data load.
And so, a series of 1,074 satellites were created, and were set to launch simultaneously from various launch sites around the globe. It was the most expensive endeavor in the entire history of Gaming Technology, quickly overshadowing the creation of the FI-Pod Itself.
May 16th
Launch Day.
News crews from around the world flocked to their nearest launch site. The world was in a buzz as Paradigm Gaming prepared to change the world as we knew it.
At 14:55:50 the count down began.
"10" The people of earth shouted in unison
"9, 8, 7" The anticipation was palpable as the crowd roared in excitement.
"6, 5, 4" The chanting grew gradually louder.
"3, 2, 1" The roar of the engines were drowned out as the crowds cheered. All over the world, satellites took off from their respective launchpads and in less than a minute, were less than specks in the sky, flying into their eternal low-orbit homes.
After 10 minutes the news companies were informed that the rockets had reached their destinations and were locked into positions. All that was left was for the activation of the Eternia Network. Gamers had already flocked to their nearest gaming center, ready to test their swords against their rivals around the world.
As everyone cheered, the technicians did their jobs, calibrating the satellites for their initiation. They were soon finished, and in Paradigm HQ, the switch was finally flipped.
Thats when it happened.
At first. Nobody but those living in the side of the earth opposite to the sun noticed the dark blue net expanding from numerous points in the sky. Points where the satellites were. It grew quickly, and the world grew silent as a foreboding feeling befell the planet. In a matter of seconds, the blue nets had interconnected, and began to pulsated and undulate. This continued for about 10 seconds,
And then everything lurched.
A sensation of suddenly falling rapidly, quickly recognized by those who have stepped into the FI-Pods before, struck every being on the planet. It was the exact same sensation as diving into the game, however, it was thousands of times more powerful. Soon the world was flooded in a dim blue light. Things began to fade in and out and become slightly transparent, the back to opaque, numbers and words began to appear randomly out of objects, lines and shapes seemed to be pasting themselves over everything, as if the whole world was under a 3D rendering program of some sort. Then. Everything disappeared. 7 Billion people now floating in the vast emptyness of space. Surrounded by a dim blue bubble. But the experience lasted only a moment, because as suddenly as it had disappeared, the world reappeared, only.. different.
Everything was quiet. And thats when the monsters attacked.
Huge, terrifying beasts only seen in fantasy games... for they were from the fantasy games.
At first people tried defending with their modern weapons but guns had no effect on the beasts that were now slaughtering innocent people left and right. It was not long, however, until help arrived. Not in the form of any military or the like, but instead in the form of the countless gamers who had played the game before.
The data from Eternia had been ported into this new digital world, and those with experience were the only ones capable of fighting back.
Despite their efforts, the Eternia Players were the Vast Minority. And so while many lives were saved, billions were also lost. Cities were destroyed, and civilization as we know it crumbled.
Except for one place.
Manhattan, New York. Home to Paradigm Gaming HQ. Where once stood a sprawling metropolis, now stood an enormous ivory city, at its center, a magnificent castle and in its throne room, sat what was soon to be known as the new, self pronounced king of the world.
Arthur Cornelius Medfast. Co-Founder and CEO of Paradigm Gaming.
??????????????????????
At first, people thought that the world was transported into the world of Eternia, but King Arthur quickly corrected that mistake. He explained, how when he created the Eternia net, found that the new data transmission system he created was ages beyond what the current technology level was, and that he had personally uploaded a code into the satellites, one that would cause the event now know as the Mass Digitization.
The United Nations tried to have him apprehended, but the attempt was absolutely futile. Not only were militay arms useless in this world, had he created a personal guard of his own to fight his battles, the Royal guard were not humans, but instead, fully Loyal NPCs.
He explained how he did not intend to leave people helpless, and that the gamers should be able to provide plenty of information on how to survive in this dangerous world.
This was how all eyes were turned to the gamers, those who wee once called lazy, were now called upon as saviours, teachers, and some, as rulers.
Little by little the world went to work, picking up the pieces. The population had been decimated, out of 7 Billion people, 2 Billion were left. With the new, single currency, economies crumbled, and Governments followed.
Current Day.
Civilization has rebuilt itself. However it is nowhere what it once was before. What were once modern weapons, guns, rifles, tanks. Were now useless paper weights, that had no effect on anything. However, as it was shortly found out, the virtual world had its perks as well. Sickness was no longer an issue, and magic allowed for feats that were once impossible. The game itself was incredibly versatile and free, and the oppression of King Arthur, while vast, was mostly limited to manhattan, and certain areas that were directly involved with him.
While Trains, Planes and Cars were no longer functional, Certain beasts were mountable, and there were the transport crystals, that allowed instantaneous transport to capitals (provided you had the money for it)
People were able to set up shops, and guilds, and even semi-independent governments. With that towns were born.
Generations had past, yet Arthur was still alive. While it was possible to die of old age, the particularly rich and powerful beaurocrats were able to buy items that negate aging. However the poor were left to grow old and die.
Still the world had entered some semblance of stability. While it was different, it was far from purely chaotic. And this is where our story takes place.
