Active [Taeko - The Republic] The Aftermath

Maxxob

The Overseer
Village.png

The small village of Taeko, nestled in the eastern reaches of The Republic and precariously close to the contested border with the East Empire, lay beneath the gentle wash of twilight, its thatched roofs and narrow, winding paths wrapped in the soft glow of lanterns. It was a humble village, a place where the earth’s bounty and the toil of its beastkin inhabitants kept life simple, though often challenging. The architecture was modest yet charming, with wooden structures adorned by paper lanterns and bamboo fences. In this hour of celebration, Taeko’s typically quiet air was broken by the joyful voices and laughter of villagers who finally felt a fleeting peace.

A makeshift feast had been laid out, no grand banquet but an earnest display of hospitality: rice balls and fresh vegetables. The low but spirited notes of a bamboo flute added a lilting melody to the air as families and friends reunited, emotions spilling freely in embraces and tears. For now, fear had subsided, and hope had kindled in the hearts of Taeko’s people.

Yoshiro
Yoshiro2.jpg

At the edge of the gathering stood Yoshiro, the village elder. A wise, elderly goat beastkin with a thick gray beard and weary eyes, Yoshiro watched the joyous reunions with a warm, quiet smile. His hands rested on his simple wooden cane, scarred and knotted from years of hard use, while his bent back and wrinkled face told tales of decades spent enduring and leading. Tonight, however, the perpetual furrow of worry in his brow had softened, replaced by a rare glint of peace.

Yui
Wolf girl.png

From the strange, metallic vehicle—the “car” the villagers still whispered about with a mix of curiosity and apprehension—Yui, a young wolf girl with bright amber eyes, bounded out. She spotted her parents instantly: a broad-shouldered wolf beastkin man with graying fur at his temples and a slender woman with soft, silver hair and kind eyes. For a heartbeat, they simply looked at each other across the short distance, as though needing to confirm it was real. Then Yui bolted forward, leaping into her mother’s arms, the force of her embrace nearly knocking the woman over.

The three of them held each other tightly, as if fearful that loosening their grasp would dissolve their reunion into a cruel dream. Yui buried her face in her mother’s shoulder, her small frame shuddering with the quiet sobs of relief. Her father, who was usually so stoic, brushed his large hand over her head, his own eyes gleaming with unshed tears. He exchanged a look with his wife, one that spoke of gratitude, love, and a promise to never let go again.

Around them, villagers paused to watch, their own eyes misting with shared joy. There was a collective understanding here—a bond deepened by the shared loss and hardship they had all experienced. Tonight, under the watchful stars and lanterns swaying in the breeze, Taeko was a place of healing and celebration.

Taeko almost seemed like a different village upon their triumphant return.

The captives had been returned to their homes and The Archbishop's staff was nestled safely in the back of Vincent's car. Decorations hung all throughout the streets. Music filled the air. The scent of fresh food filled her nostrils, though The Wolf did find herself lamenting the lack of meat. Still, the words that she'd shared with the others lingered in the back of her mind, even now.

"There is still much to be done here..." Okami said to the others as she surveyed the area. They already knew her thoughts on the current state of the village. No need to repeat herself, "But I don't see how one night of celebration will hurt anything. Besides..."

The whole scene made her smile. Elder Yoshiro seemed at peace. Families held each other; just happy to see absent faces once again. Some were dancing. Others would feast. Children were wrestling in the streets. There were-

"You're a cheater! A filthy cheater!"

The Ronin's sights flickered over towards the sound of the voice. A bunch of beastkin, men and woman alike, gathered around a table playing cards. One, what appeared to be a chicken-man, was rather upset about an unfortunate round; standing and leaning over the table as he shouted. His attention seemed to be focused on a pig-man who'd taken up a defensive posture despite a lingering smirk on his face. The rest of the table seemed to find amusement in the engagement; smiling and snickering to themselves as they turned away from the chicken in some feeble attempt to conceal the humor they derived from his pain.

"What?" the pig replied.

"No, don't sit there and act like you didn't just pull a card out of your sleeve."

"Now, when would I have done that?"

"When you saw that you had a losing hand!"

"I didn't cheat, Marty!"

"Yes, you did!"

"Well, then why did no one else see me slip this card?"

"Y'all saw him cheating, right?"

The struggle of the bystanders intensified tenfold. Smiles stretched from ear to ear. Snickers grew louder. Many fought with all their might to contain a thunderous laughter that might've drawn the wrath of the vengeful cock in their direction.

"You guys did see him cheating, right?"

...

"Um, n-no?"

"No."

"Not really."

"I... didn't really see-"

"Oh, the hell with you people. You know, I'm starting to think-"

Okami's attention began to drift away from the group until she met eyes with one of the beastmen sitting opposite the chicken at the table.. A bull-man waving her down with a huge bottle of sake in one hand and an open seat between them. With one leg, he pushed the seat out from under the table, then gestured for her to come sit. After a moment of hesitation, she shrugged her shoulders.

"We can plan for the future of Taeko in the morning. Don't hesitate to come and get me if you need me. But, in the meantime," she said to the group as she made her way over to the vacant seat, "There's no better way to honor the locals than to enjoy the festivities that they've arranged for us, is there?"

Hezekiah Gale
IMG_3403.jpeg
As he walked Hezekiah grumbled under his breath. He Had only been up about an hour and a half and was still feeling last nights hangover as he began to see the village of Taeko peek up over the horizon. “At least that old hustlers directions were accurate.” He would complain as he took another glance at the contract in his hand. In short…it had signed his services to some rebel leader or something by the name of Yukan. His signature was right there at the bottom just above the man who wrote it up, Mr.Gensai.

After about another ten minutes or so of walking Hezekiah would reach the edge of the town and would immediately notice the festive atmosphere. “Some kind of celebration huh?” He would mumble as he wandered a bit further into the town. Scanning the crowds looking for the beast man who he would be working for, all he had was a picture that he saw just the one tim but that was sufficient. For better or worse Hezekiah was unable to forget a face…even if he wanted too.

Having no real leads yet and not spotting this Yukan immediately Hezekiah would decide perhaps a drink or two would help, at least it would help his morning headache for the time being. Who knows maybe he would find someone who knew the person he needed to find. So he meandered towards the local tavern, walking past a table where a bunch of people were playing cards…tempting as it was, Hezekiah barely had enough coin for the drink he knew he didn’t have the coin for a game of cards. So he walked on past the table and to the nearby booth with a simple “excuse me” to a few folks in the crowd before making it to the booth and asking “You got anything to drink? Something a bit strong.

Katja was just pleased to watch the villagers be reunited and be happy. They had come through a dark period, but what was the lesson they might take from it? That they needed to be stronger? That violence solved their problems? That outsiders were dangerous? Katja did not know and part of her was saddened that likely peace was not in any lesson the village would learn. The idea that her actions might have made the world an ever so slightly harsher place was saddning. She wished for a kinder gentler world for everyone. Well for now a greater foe had been sent away at a minor cost of perhaps making this place less peaceful.

Katha did wonder why she had been sent here, why this world when hers was in so much need. She could only trust it was God's plan, that she would one day find the reason. Right now as she had told Yukan she was just a wanderer just doing as she felt was right. Right now in the present Katja has another diffrent worry, her clothes were destroyed. Well not destroyed, but soaked with now stiff and somehow still sticky blood. She also had a massive hole though it right over her stomach. She could celebrate but well she was honestly not one for parties and the discomfort from the blood woukd only get worse.

" Elder I am sorry to ask but where does the village do their laundry. I need to wash my habit? " she asked the elderly goat. She needed to either wash her clothes or get new ones before she couId do anything else.

"Let's go, Vince. Show us your drifting skill."

"Buckle Up." A hand reached across Yui. And he placed a seatbelt her form with a subtle click. The cigarette in his mouth was stuffed in an ash tray. Rolling down a window, Vince flicked his cigarette out of the car. After all, there was a kid here. It was then tossed out. The car moved ahead of the group ever so slightly before pedal was put to metal.

VROOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!!

A plume of dust was kicked up in the air before Vince, Rei and Yui would momentarily disappear. The sound of his car would become more and more distant as his vehicle picked up speed away from the group, careening down the dirt path without ever tiring. Both Yui and Vince would feel themselves pressed into Vince's seat. Rei in the open trunk, would feel the scepter up against her tail, her body blocking it and everything else mostly from falling out. Thankfully, he didn't bring much for this trip. He was expecting to ferry the wounded or to ferry corpses. But there none of such people to ferry. Despite the victory today, he knew that wasn't always the case

Coming up on a turn, Vince began to turn....before shifting the wheel abruptly in the other direction. Weight was directed to the front of the car. The vehicle began span and pivoted, tearing up dirt. With the hand break up, he began to slid around the corner and steering all the while.

SKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

Lacking the familiar sound of asphalt, the car only kicked up dirt along the path -- tire tracks forming along the road as if to say "Vince was here." Soon however, the handbrake was released. And he went along the straight of the path and towards the village.

Vince's approach was as loud as when he first appeared the village that day. This time however, he wasn't really alone. Yoshiro was probably going to be one of the first to see Vince appearing in his metal carriage before coming to a halt. He reached to unbuckle Yui -- reached over to the door and simply...let her go. The car would open and soon Yui would fly out to her mom and pop.

A small smile appeared on Vince's face. He could have gone over to say something, but chose not to. Felt a bit wrong to do so. "Man, barely even know these people and hardly feels real." He says. It was a strange feeling for it to go so smoothly. There was still a lot to do but even this small victory was going to be something he'd remembered.

Given his past, he was all too accustomed to finding hostages who were worse for ware -- abused at the hands of monsters who saw them as nothing more than replenishable blood dolls, toys and sometimes who saw fit to turn them into mind-fucked versions of themselves. Yet it would be here that he would feel like...a hero? Like something out of a story book. At this point, he wouldn't be surprised if he was in one.

As he got out the car, he crossed his arms and stared on taking a moment to watch. He saw no need interrupt. No need to introduce himself. No need for a thank you. The sight of them had been enough. Let the kid have her fun and spend some quality time with her family. He was off to go do things that weren't really in her place.

tumblr_npgdrtTfyy1svir81o9_500.gifv

The festivities began not too soon after. The car had been put away. And a now a fresh cigarette had taken the place off the one he'd disposed of in the beginning. On Vincent's exhausted mind was one thing and it wasn't for kids: Drink. He'd thought about tapping into the bottle of Hennesy he kept tucked away in his car. But it felt wrong when he was in a foreign land. Whenever it was he left the Republic, he had no idea when he was going to tap into it's food and drink again.

The food made him think he was going to be eating real lean. It looked like he was going on a diet. Yet having skipped every meal, he began to gorge himself on as much rice, vegetables and soy sauce as he could, with a side of Miso soup and finally....drink.

"Don't mind if I do." He said simply to Okami -- he wasn't specific about wanting to be followed or to be alone. Though he appeared he wanted a whole bottle for himself pawning some of the local BeastYen currency off for it. While Vince might have been able to get some for free, the Beast man was all too happy to sell it.

"Sake right?" He takes a bottle and pour himself a club, offering a few Rykes in exchange.

"Ya know." Vince leaned close to one beastman. Yet he started speaking obnoxiously loudly, almost as though to assuredly. "You know, something tells me your elder ain't been braggin' enough." He says, as he takes a drink, loosening up more and more by the second. "That thing appeared outta thin air right before. Then it started raising his hand and chanting to do something to him. No doubt to take him away. Or worse. Yet -- there he was looking the creature straight in the eye. Sure we took it out. But we were hiding in the trees and shit. Him? Oh, he was standing out in the open, mean mugging the thing. Can't say I've ever seen much braver than that." The tale was rattled off to the beastman to make something of an urban myth. He snickered at the thought that it might spread and how it might twist as different mouths told it. But part of him wanted to toast to the old goat himself.

He looked left and right, wondering where that old goat was, as well as a bit of the group in general. Okami seemed to hang out with the gamblers. Katja appeared to not be the most well suited for parties. Go figure. He wouldn't be surprised if some others turned in. It'd been a long day and a long night. And for him, it'd be only longer -- as he found himself in the thick of festivities with one question in mind.

Where is everyone?

Yukan Koyake was pleased to see that there had been unification and a celebration after they appeared to have defeated the immediate threat of the cultists nearby at the very least. However Yukan still felt uneased. The best they'd be able to do would be to prepare the village for any future attacks and get enough people into fighting shape, perhaps enhancing the defenses of it as well, hopefully his military knowledge and leadership skills would come in handy there.

Even if Yukan hadn't formally enlisted in the Kuridan military he had done plenty of mercenary work at this point and fought along side some of them, he had also been educated in such a way where he knew about a variety of topics pertaining to it, such as how the military was organized.

"If they wish to show their hospitality for our help the respectful thing is to accept it." Yukan spoke matter of fact when Okami raised the point that a night of celebration shouldn't matter, despite his mind being preoccupied on more serious matters.

Yukan was glad at least that the beast population seemed to be more accepting of Okami in this village at least, given she had played a role in helping them out it was only fair, even if she wasn't a beast, she had shown herself an ally just as Yukan had suggested surely.

Instead of getting into Shenanigans immediately , Yukan being as serious and focused as he tended to be made his way over to Elder Yoshiro and gave the village Elder a low somewhat prolonged respectful bow on account of his title and advanced age, both arms at his side.

Yukan also took note of Katja, giving her a nod of acknowledgement.

Yukan spoke and acted with Etiquette F + Culture F + History F + Persuasion F

"<I would like to personally thank Taeko Village for showing it's hospitality to us after our operation. I would also like to thank you for entrusting your people under my leadership. With no serious injuries or causalities, it went as well as I hoped it could have.>"

Yukan would have to pick his next words carefully so as not to offend

"<With that said, given that current support from the Daimyo overseeing this land, I feel it is fair to say, has not been adequate with the recent experiences,

before I leave here, I would like to help secure and support the future safety of this village by imparting knowledge and resources, encase there are future threats. I hope that you find this prospect reasonable, and of course I Would not expect it to be at any cost of the village, but as an extension of our shared identity of beasts of the Republic, standing against any future evil that may bare it's fangs.>"

Yukan reasoned out.

"Itadakimasu~"

The second thing Rei did after arriving at the feast the villagers provided was to wolf down the foods in front of her, the first thing she did was get drunk. Rice balls, miso soup, pickles, tofu. She just shoved whatever she can grab into her mouth, slurping and chomping loudly as she piles at least a dozen of empty plates next to her. She didn't feels it during the raid but turns out she's very hungry. It's only when she couldn't take another bite does she finally stop.

"Thank you or the meal~" Finally putting her chopsticks down. The now stuffed Rei waddle towards the nearby tavern for her next round of drinks. Approaching the counter, she noticed a rather strange figure there: a human. In this beastkin village, the only human she knew was her, Vincent, Okami and Katja. All were coming because of the request.

"Give me the same stuff as him." Rei pointed at the man to indicate her order before sitting next to him.

"Did you come here for the disappearing request, pal?" Rei let out a hiccup before she continued. "You're late, we already did it. It's done~ done~"

The lively atmosphere of celebration continues to fill the village air, punctuated by laughter, music, and animated conversations. The makeshift tavern booth, really just a temporary setup for the festivities, is being manned by a cheerful tanuki beastkin with round spectacles and a neatly tied bandana.

Upon Hezekiah's request for something strong, the tanuki barkeep grins, reaching beneath his counter. "<Coming right up!>" he says in Bestial before switching to Common, "We have special sake from my personal reserve. Very strong, very good!" He produces a ceramic bottle with intricate blue patterns painted on its surface.

As Rei joins them, the tanuki's eyes sparkle with amusement at her state, but he dutifully pours another drink. The smell of the sake is potent, with hints of fruit and rice wafting through the air.

Near the card table, the argument between the chicken and pig beastkin has evolved into a peculiar sort of entertainment for the other players. The bull who invited Okami over introduces himself as Toro, his deep voice carrying easily over the chicken's continued protests. "Welcome, warrior! You must try some of this sake - it's from my family's brewery!"
Yoshiro
Yoshiro2.jpg

Meanwhile, Elder Yoshiro turns his attention to both Katja and Yukan, his weathered face showing appreciation for their respective approaches. To Katja, he gestures with his cane toward the east side of the village. "The washing area is by the stream, just past those houses. The women usually gather there in the mornings." He pauses, considering. "Though I believe Haruko, the seamstress, might have some spare cloth if you need it."

To Yukan's formal address, the elder's expression grows more serious, though no less grateful. "<Your words honor us,>" he responds in Bestial, leaning slightly on his cane. "<The matter of our defense... yes, it has been concerning me greatly. Perhaps we could discuss this further tomorrow, when minds are clearer?>" He glances meaningfully at some of the more enthusiastic celebrants nearby.

From somewhere in the crowd, a child's voice rings out: "Look! The funny car man made pictures in the dirt!" Several young beastkin can be seen gathering at the edge of the village, pointing at the tire tracks Vincent's dramatic arrival left behind.

The beastkin Vincent is speaking to, a stocky badger with a graying muzzle, leans in with widening eyes as he listens to the tale. His cup of sake temporarily forgotten in his hand, he glances over at Elder Yoshiro with newfound admiration.

"<By the ancestors...>" he mutters in Bestial before switching to Common, "I knew Elder was brave, but to face such a creature..." He takes a heavy drink from his cup, then turns to share the story with a group of nearby villagers. Already, the tale begins to transform as it passes from one mouth to another, with some adding that the Elder's stern gaze alone made the creature hesitate, while others insist that he uttered an ancient prayer of protection.

A young rabbit beastkin, overhearing the conversation, pipes up, "My father says the Elder once fought off a bear with nothing but his cane when he was younger!" The story seems to be taking root in the village's folklore, cementing Elder Yoshiro's reputation not just as a wise leader, but as a courageous defender of Taeko.

The festive atmosphere continues to build as night fully settles in, with more lanterns being lit and the sound of a shamisen joining the bamboo flute, adding depth to the celebratory music.

Katja both nodded and gave the elder a bow trying to return respect with respect, as she still could not help but feel she had not done much. " thank you elder " She said though she didn't want to mention that she needed to bathe as well as the blood was soaked through her clothes to her skin as well. While Katja wouldn't mind taking part in things she didn't want to scare anyone with her bloody and torn clothes despite something telling her that no one would care. Besides this to her was more a party for the others who had done the fighting and the saving, there was only one thing that she truly wanted to do tonight aside from washing herself.

Katja let the elder respond to Yukan before she turned to the racoon man " Lord Yukan i will need to speak to you in private i have a few questions about you and other matters" She wanted to ask him about what he wanted to do and perhaps to help assuage the worry she felt about what the villagers might have learned. Katja had never needed to worry about these things as the labyrinth was just evil and there was no one in it that might take the wrong lesson from what she had done in it. The labyrinth was there for be fought and encouraged it thus did it matter if others chose violence against it? " Please though enjoy yourself you and the others deserve the reward, when you are ready you can find me where the elder said" Meaning the washing spot. Katja left herself out of deserving the was reward as while she would partake if she had time did she actually deserve it? She had helped yes, but violence had been the answer not the peace she wanted.

Katja didn't really let Yukan respond before she wandered off to find the spot that the elder had indicated. she did not expect anyone to bother seeking her out aside from Yukan who she had told to come to this spot, as everyone should be busy with the festival. The blood on her habit had crusted and the only bit that weren't solid were those that her own sweat kept from fully hardening. Katja sighed knowing that this was not going to just take a short dip in water to get off. The grey cloth around her abdomen would be stuck red without some help for sure, but most of her outfit was black so at least the stains would be minor.

Katja found a basket that would let water in and then put a few stones in it so it could stay in the river without being carried away, before stripping down. Her underwear was about as ruined as her habit, though luckily with less holes, just another thing that needed to soak. Putting her clothes in the basket and wading into the river Katja would let the basket sink just deep enough to submerge the clothes in the water while she waited for the blood to soften so she could get it out. If this place was more modern she could use bleach or a some peroxide to get it all out, as she wasn't scared the colors would go if she did it was magic or had been. For now she would just let them soak as she found a nice place to sit in the cool water of the rive and gaze at the stars while listening to the sounds of the festivites int he back ground. She did hope her clothes would be ready before Yukan came, but if they were oh well Adam and eve were as she was right now so she should feel no shame in it.

Hezekiah would smile as the Tanuki reached under his counter and produced what looked to be a particularly impressive brew. He had barely wrapped his hands around the cup when Rei sat beside him and ordered the same. He figured she had gravitated to the bar for a drink and spotted him, the only other human he had seen thus far, it made sense to him. Yet her comment caused him to raise an eyebrow, “Disappearing request? Afraid i know nothing about it, my business here is with an individual…not a guild. Does the name Yukan Mean anything to you?” He would say tossing the sake down his gullet with a fluid motion and lack or reaction that belied his experience in such an area. He would set the cup back down for the tanuki to refill giving him an appreciative nod to express his satisfaction with the drink before turning his his chair so that he was facing the strange warrior woman. “While we are on the topic of names…mine is Hezekiah. What is yours?” he would add in an effort to be polite.

Both his garb and the Book at hip would have him pegged as a magic user right out of the gate. However if one had some experience with Ryke and the war they would recognize the embroidery on his robes, while not particularly famous, the healers of the Althos monastery had symbols and Outposts all over Ryke and a few in the borderlands of surrounding nations. His gaze was a strange mixture of indifference and anticipation with a slight blush beginning to creep into his cheeks as the alcohol had begun to take its effect.

Yukan felt pleased to hear such words come from the Village Elder.

"<Yes of course, I understand. We've all had a long day and shouldn't take the good times which have fallen upon us for granted. Even so it pleases me to hear we are on a similar page then.>" He'd nod respectfully.

When Katja started speaking to him, the Tanuki man turned to face her fully, as to be respectful. He was a bit surprised to hear her call him 'lord' it was a title which he had only really just started letting Okami call him, but even so, he supposed Lord would be what would need to use moving forward if he wanted to garner a following properly.

"I understand, If you wish to speak with me I can give you an audience. It's the least I can do after you assisted us here in such a crucial capacity."

He'd give another small bow to her, before she walked off, not really having much time to respond in a formal capacity it seemed as she was on the move. That was no matter, he still appreciated the sentiment of her saying he and the others deserved to rest, even if he felt a bit uneasy resting himself, find it hard not to think about what he could be doing to prepare for his aspirations instead.

After giving another serious bow Elder Yoshiro's way, Yukan made his way away some more into the crowd. He'd take some time hear and see what the young beast folk were talking about, whatever that car contraption was, was most curious to him.

It seemed it was even capable of making..art in the ground? He'd also listen to the Shamisen and bamboo flute playing, finding it most appropriate for the occasion.

Soon Yukan would decide that he probably shouldn't keep Katja waiting since she'd requested him, figuring he could regroup with the others after if need be. He too would go off to find the spot that Katja had went too so that he could meet up with her, and find out exactly what she wanted to know. It would be quite valuable to have a healer and supporter agreeable to the operations he'd be undertaking so hopefully he and her could see eye to eye.

Katja honestly hadn't thought that Yukan would come find her any time soon, tonight for sure, but she thought she had an hour or so. The town was celebrating him and he seemed to have plans for the town. That seemed like it would take time to work on and while he wasn't Vincent Katja was sure the kids would want to ask the heroic leader of the bunch plenty of questions. Not to mention she had thought herself as the only one that wouldn't really be partaking, as she was the only one with a reason. So Katja had been relaxing letting her clothes and her body soak for awhile in the cool river water, she might have hurried to her clothes somewhat cleaned if she knew that Yukan would come for her not to long after she had left. Katja didn't don't he had done some rounds, but not spent much time with any of them, that was a bit sad he should celebrate like the others. Well Yukan was here now and Katja was as dressed as eve had been before she was tempted, which was to say not at all. Still the area was only lit by the moon, and stars as the village was close but still a distance away and there was no reason to keep the area lit up. For a human the darkness was rather dark, but still bright enough to let one see everything around them. The only thing that really was not pierced by the moonlight was the water which took on a darker inky darkness. In truth everything in the moonlight held a pale radiance, a light blue tint upon everything.

" Ah i didn't expect you to come so soon Lord Yukan " Katja said still calling him lord only because Okami did and she seemed to be the formal and polite sort. The question was to sit or stand, well staying sitting was more casual and understandable given the situation, but Katja did think it was proper etiquette to stand despite her current clothing situation.

Katja decided that she would stand and thrust rose from where she half sat, half laid in the water. The water only came up to around her calves when she stood up, the river was not very deep and who would want a deep river for things like washing and water? This left her pale body exposed and now glistening in the light of the moon, though Katja wasn't really embarrassed and didn't attempt to hide herself. She was talking to a racoon man would a beast man even really care if a human was unclothed before them? She also had grown up where showers and bathing while divided by gender was communal and well she had been on journeys were such privacy was a luxury none could afford.

" I had thought the others would and party would keep you busy for awhile more " She continued her tone light almost having a chuckle about the whole thing. " If i had known i would have worked on my clothes faster " She gestured to the soaking basket there the scabs were likely already getting soaked and breaking down.

Katja thought about it for a moments before approaching Yukan, it might be impolite, but standing in a briskly moving river was a bit harder when you were not focusing on another task. " honestly this might not be that important, but i wanted to know what kind of place do you want this village, to be?" She asked the question was more deep than she gave it credit for " It is likely clear that i am a woman of peace, i wish to make the world a gentler kinder place, what kind of world do you wish to make for these people?" In truth she had more than questions " I do worry that in this world my actions are only making a world that knows that violence is the solution, that while we saved the people here did we just show them that they should be ready to fight, that they should be aggressive? It is a silly worry but one i think only you can answer. I only know you are a lord or called such, but you are not likely a formal noble, so what are you a pretender, a righteous rebel, a would be warlord, or a peacemaker?" another rather long question or rather a series " i am sorry if this is all personal, even if you don't answer i have already said i will help you for a time and i will not matter the answer"

"Oh? Your coming for bozz? I didn't expect that, heh. Name's Rei, I'm the boss' left hand man during the raid." Rei gulped down the drink he was provided without any hesitation. Her face turned from slightly pink to obviously pink from all the drink she had, though there didn't seems to be any drastic behavioral shift from her. At least for now.

"Let's goooo, I will introduce you to bozzz." Rei stood from her seat and signaled at hezekiah to follow her. Her steps were unsteady and it only took her five steps before she stumbled over nothing and crashed into the nearest tables. Thankfully no one was there so she didn't hurt anyone but herself.

"My head feelz heavy, must be the drink." Rei immediately stood back up... with a wooden stool stuck on her horns, seems like she neither noticed or bothered by it. The swordswoman scanned the surrounding to look for Yukan but she didn't see him. She did spot someone else though.

"Can't find bozz, but you can ask the boss' wife over there. I'm sure she will knoww." Rei pointed Hezekiah towards Okami in the distance.

Hezekiah would watch with a look of clear amusement as Rei Stumbled out of her stool and into the nearby table. His eyebrows raised slightly but he would likewise get out of his seat. “Do…do you want me to help out with that? I can sober you up fairly easily.” He would offer with a nonchalant tone. His gaze shifting to the stool caught on her horns. It seemed this horned lightweight was putting him on the right path, and he figured it would be a good idea to be a tad kind to her as a means of smoothing his transition into a conscript.

His gaze would follow rei’s finger and would nod. married to a tanuki? Wonder how that works out…’ He would think to himself shifting his gaze back to Rei and Reaching out to grab the stood caught on her horns and gently lifting it. “Thanks i suppose…you aught to be a little more careful.” he would say with a light chuckle. “It would be shameful for a warrior to be defeated by a Bit of drink and a nasty tousle with gravity.” he would say gesturing for her to lead the way towards this wife of yukan.

Spoiled Bread Spoiled Bread

A cup full of sake found its way into Okami's hand as a new round of cards was slowly passed around the table. She downed it rather quickly. The cards were quickly gathered before a dealer who'd begin to shuffle. Whether or not The Ronin would join in on the next hand depended entirely upon the ante for the next round. Well, that and Toro's words. While she waited for the dealer's declaration, she found herself downing a second. Then, with a bit of blush beginning to spread across her cheeks, she turned to the young bull who'd invited her over.

"Tell me something, Toro. You seem like the honest, knowledgeable, reliable sort," She buttered him up a bit, a somewhat mischievous look emerging on her countenance, "Say I'm the adventurous type. And say I want to do something exciting tonight that I won't get another chance to during my stay here in Taeko. What advice might you have for me? Would I find what I'm looking for here at this table? Or is there something else in the village I should be looking fo-"

An itch crept through her sinuses. Okami turned away from him and sneezed into her sleeve twice. Then, with a slight groan, she turned back to him.

"Excuse me. Someone must be talking about me."

Crazy fuckin' kids.

With a smirk, he watched as a few kids frollicked on the tracks he made. So far it seemed like everyone was having a good time. And there were a lot of things he liked to watch.

With a little bit of observation -- Vince managed to answer his own question.

He caught a glimpse of Yukan with what looked like a stern expression on his face. The guy seemed about every bit as earnest and experienced one might have expected a Samurai to be. He couldn't blame him but a little bit of celebration seemed to be okay. He wondered what it was that he was going to be up to. It seemed however like he was going the same direction that Katja was going. Given the distance, the crowd and his lack of any type of enhanced hearing, he'd didn't hear any a thing. But Vince had a good set of peepers, and he knew a bit about reading lips. So he read Katja's mouth from a distance.

"Yukan" "Private" "Find me" The words were hazy, incomplete and also interrupted by people passing by and breaking contact with his eyes. Given that he knew where the village's in was, he knew she didn't seem to be goin'.

Wonder why Yukan and Katja are up to...?

He shrugged it off, thinking that maybe they were both turning in. But then he remembered that the inn was the other direction.

Yojiro seemed to be speaking to them both, quietly content with the way the night had gone. For him he didn't have any questions. Although what Vince did have involved him, as a little kid ran up to him. Vince smirked upon hearing the story.

"Oh Yoshiro? Wouldn't surprise me. He has the heart of a warrior. I bet he kicked a whole lotta butt when he was younger. A bear? That's nothin' compared to what he stared down!" Vince said, adjusting his language a little bit in the presence of a kid. "But he's real humble. He'd probably never brag about it and would just keep it a secret."

Vince raised a glass to take a drink. "Just goes to show you should respect your Elders." Vince chuckled, sprinkling truth with speculation and gossip. All with a lesson in the end. Maybe the kid would grow up to be a warrior some day when Vince was long gone. Place definitely needed a few.

Rei appeared to be getting shitfaced as god intended. At least someone was loosening up. He briefly winced as he saw Rei CRASHED into a table. "Yeowch. Might need to look after that one in a sec...." However, it seemed like there was a new face next to her and Vince raised a brow curiously. The guy didn't seem like a villager as he was another human just like him and generally his kind didn't seem like they came to a little village like this for no reason. He was a little curious as to why he was here but the guy didn't seem to be a threat of any type. With him taking the table off her stuck in her head, seemed like she at least had someone looking after her.

With the wind however, Vince remembered something by chance.

Oh yeah. I said I'd get Okami a drink.

On a whim, Vincent walked over to her -- watching her play a game of cards.

"Ya winnin' over here, sword lady? If not, this might help. And if so, here's a cup since you helped me not get chopped in half earlier." With her cup empty, he tipped over his bottle and poured her a third cup from his bottle. Dying once via being decapitated by a vampire claw was enough for him.

There was a mention of a man who was talking about. And Vince had a hunch who it was -- judging on the stranger who's approaching. "Looks like that's your man." Vince says, pointing to the approaching...pastor? Wizard? He wasn't sure. some guy who carried around a real big book.

Wonder what he wants....

The festive atmosphere continues in the village, though the scene now splits into several distinct locations and interactions:

At the washing spot by the river, the moonlight casts an ethereal glow over the area, with the sounds of celebration carrying faintly on the night air. The water flows gently, creating a peaceful counterpoint to the distant revelry.

Back in the village center, the celebrations continue in full swing. The shamisen and flute music weaves through the air, while the stories about Elder Yoshiro continue to grow and spread among the villagers. Some of the younger beastkin have started acting out the tale of his confrontation with the mysterious creature, adding increasingly dramatic flourishes with each retelling.

At the gaming table, the dealer - a gruff-looking boar beastkin - announces the next round's ante: "Three copper pieces to start, no limit on raises." The sake continues to flow freely, and the warm glow of lanterns illuminates the various faces around the table, both furred and human.

Toro, a young bull beastkin with an impressive build and a confident demeanor, leans back in his chair with a knowing grin spreading across his face. His dark fur gleams in the lantern light as he takes a thoughtful sip from his cup, clearly appreciating Okami's direct approach.

"Well now," he says with a low, rumbling chuckle, "if it's excitement you're after, you've definitely come to the right table." He gestures to the pile of coins at the center. "But I get the feeling you're looking for something more... interesting than just cards."

He leans forward, lowering his voice just enough to be heard over the ambient celebration, "There's an old watchtower just outside the village - dates back to before most of us were born. Some of us younger folk like to climb up there on nights like this. You can see for miles, and the view of the stars..." he pauses meaningfully, "well, let's just say it's worth the climb. Of course, the sake tastes even better up there, and the company..." he lets that thought hang in the air with a confident smirk.

"Though I should warn you - Elder Yoshiro doesn't exactly approve of us using the old tower as our personal lookout spot. Adds a bit of... thrill to the whole thing, if you ask me."

The dealer clears his throat pointedly, waiting to know if they're in for the next hand or not.

The Tanuki bartender keeps a watchful eye on his patrons, especially those who seem to be feeling the effects of his special brew more strongly than others. He's particularly attentive to Rei's condition, though he seems somewhat relieved that she has company looking after her.

The night air carries a mix of aromas - the sweet scent of sake, the savory smell of grilled meats, and the subtle fragrance of night-blooming flowers that grow in the village gardens. The celebration shows no signs of winding down, despite the late hour.

Rei Unagishi

"Hmm? Sobering me up? Nonono, if i'm sober how am I supposed to forget..." Rei raised her palm in front of her like she was about to stop Hezekiah, though she just suddenly stopped as she's trying to remember something.

"Forget..."

"Uh... I forget what I'm forgetting. Doezn't matter anyway."

After a few pulls the stool was finally freed from Rei's horns. It now had two very noticeable holes on it so Rei covered it with a napkin and put it back next to the table as if nothing happened to it.

"Let'z go meet her!" Leading the way to the gaming table, Rei unannouncedly sat on one of the chair as if she would join the game of cards. Her unfocused eyes darted between Okami, her drink, the card game and the bottle on Vincent's hands. Then she grabbed an empty cup and slides it in front of Vincent while raising her index finger up.

"One cup pleaze, with, with ice."

"Oh yeah. Where's bozz? This... this man wants to meet your husband."
She said to Okami while pointing at Hezekiah.

Yukan Koyake

Yukan took in the peaceful sounds of the washing spot, looking over the area, his dark vision probably informing the clarity which he saw but also rendering the scene in more of a grayscale to make use of all of the light in the area. With his hearing he heard the celebrations, after this business with whatever the healer wished to discuss with him, he'd likely make his way back.

What Yukan hadn't been expecting when he looked over to Katja, and heard her name was that she was wearing considerably less clothing than before, that much more was apparent when she stood up. His eyes widened briefly as he looked her over, beast and human women not all as different as some might claim who felt more biased about the races. Even so, Instead of oogling her body, he'd politely avert his gaze, figuring that as a lady connected to a religious order in particular she probably wouldn't want his gaze all over her throughout the conversation, after averting when it seemed more appropriate he'd look to her and make eye contact.

He'd give a bit of an apologetic serious bow, with Etiquette F

"Apologies, I was unaware you'd be bathing, it was not my intention to intrude..but from the sound of your words you are not too bothered and would like to have our discussion, in that case I will stay." He'd speak matter of factly, probably doing pretty well externally staying serious even if on the inside he felt embarrassed, his heart rate having gone up, still getting a feeling that he had intruded on a lady in a vulnerable situation which would have been far more polite and proper to avoid completely.

"I might have stayed longer but the others seemed to be enjoying themselves well enough with out me and truthfully, I've had some..difficulty relaxing given what you and I now both know to be true..even if we had a victory this village is not secure.." He'd speak matter of fact with a serious tone.

At her next questions, the Tanuki man thought through his response carefully, it was good to see that she seemed invested in the prospect and really wanted to know what his plans were if she was going to be joining up which was logical. Thankfully Yukan actually had quite a few answers at the ready which had been brewing over in his mind since he had started to think this way.

" Kind healer, what I want this village to be safe and be capable of providing to its inhabitants what they need to not only survive but thrive. It has been clear in my time in the Republic of Kuridan, that.this system does not always benefit those who have the least in Society, I witnessed it back in the Nara No Nox Shogunate, poor farmers whose fields and buildings had been destroyed, yet I knew then and there the government would not help, and even here in Taeko with their plights, their village is not deemed "valuable" enough to warrant sending the resources quickly to help them..It is this inequality which I wish to help rectify."

"As a result the "world" which I wish to create, is one of security and prosperity, a place where even the feeblest have a chance to live a fulfilling life."

Yukan gave her a nod,

"I understand your concern with promoting violence, but I will standby the notion that sometimes violence is the only solution when you have enemies who cannot be reasoned with, this is the way it has been in Kuridan, with those of us who are [Beast], you should not cower from your enemies, but become strong enough to overcome them if it is necessary, so in that sense I Would like to provide these people the ability to defend themselves again should evil try to strike, not to encourage overly aggressive behavior but to ensure that should they have to act with violence in the future, they'll be capable of it, it could mean the difference between surviving or not, because unfortunately I Know from experience there are many threats in this world who cannot be reasoned with words alone..that is not to say that one must only fight to the death either, beat them into submission so that they leave and hopefully never return..can also be a viable..solution."

"But of course, if there appears to be a potential viable way forward with words then that should be tried first, if it is not too great a risk, I can agree with you there."

At Katja asking him his identity, Yukan would shake his head. "I am not a pretender, I have fought against the East Empire, I have helped to liberate slaves, and I know for a fact that I have noble blood within..I saw him in my vision in my near death experience my Koyake Clan ancestor, I felt his energy..a leader, I am closer to him than I ever thought..however you are correct that if I am to get people to acknowledge my status I will need irrefutable proof.."

Yukan then thought for awhile before he spoke back up, "My plan is to be a liberator, and an equalizer in this land., give those who are too weak to speak a voice, those who cannot swing a blade, the ability to should they need it, I want to create a place in this realm where the greatness of Kuridan can be restored and better than ever before.." He'd finally finish.

"Those..are likely the words I'd put to it."

"As I've shared all of this with you, I would like to know more about you. You wish to make the world a more peaceful place..do you have any tangible goals in mind to achieve this goal? What are you hoping to accomplish while you are here?"

A familiar voice caught The Ronin's ear as she pulled away from her sleeve. She turned to catch sight of Vincent refilling her glass. The brief expression of surprise painted across her face quickly lends itself to a smile.

"I appreciate you, Tinkerer," she replied, taking the glass in hand.

At his announcement, she turned to catch sight of Rei and a new face making their way over. With a wave, she gestures for them to come over and make themselves known as well. The more, the better on nights like this. The dealer declares the ante, but the bull sitting beside her continues to capture most of her attention. The "adventure" that he began to describe wasn't really the kind she'd had in mind.

...but she wasn't exactly complaining either.

She glanced over at the impatient dealer for a brief moment before turning back to Toro. And the young bull- possibly Vincent as well- could see brief flow of emotions written all over her face. A brief moment of surprise at his proposition... followed some newfound interest and curiosity.

"I'm sure the table will still be here when we get back," she replied whilst raising her cup, not at all concerned with whether or not it actually would be, "Lead the way."

But, before either of them could stand from their seats, Rei and her new friend arrived at the table. First, she asked Vincent to pour her a drink. It was debatable whether or not he really should've been pouring her another one with how much trouble she seemed to be having just walking in a straight line. The question that followed only cemented the fact that she'd had a few too many to drink that night in Okami's mind.

She glanced over to this new face with a furrowed brow- as though he were at fault for this gross misunderstanding- before turned back to Rei.

"My what!?"

Katja listened to Yukan's answer to her questions. They were somewhere along the lines of what she could expect from a leader. One who addressed the injustices of the goverment and sought to help the people. There was a word for such a Hellion a rebel, an idealist, so many ways to say the same thing. Katja couldn't say she didn't want to change things as she had admitted as much. That the beast types were more aggressive like the beasts they resembled was sad it would mean peace was something that went aginst a deep rooted nature.

Katja moved away from Yukan and into the water sitting down so most of her was hidden away under the darkened water. She had decided that it was not rude to sit while Yukan stood. Katja sat down by a rock in the water so that she wasn't fighting the current constantly.

" Violence brings violence, but it has to be that way " katja sighed on the subject of fighting being needed. There were plenty of threats that peace just wasn't an option for at least not yet. That was why she didn't suggest it to the others, why she hadn't tried to appeal to the cultists nature. It had to be this way.

When Yukan asked about her Katja wanted to shrug and say there wasn't much to say. She wanted a kinder world, but how she didn't know. She was an idealist that the world could change, a revolutionary that lacked the will to raise a hand. She had no real answer on how to change the world.

" I just want to help " she said revealing just how aimless she really was in this world " My home world once was a place of science and humanity, no magic, no other races abd yet we found reasons to fight. That changed when the labyrinth cane and reshaped the world giving many people power. I was one of those and we were to save the world by going to the bottom of the labyrinth. I guess that's another thing I messed up. " she hadn't mentioned the biggest thing that drove her that fueled her guilt as she wasn't really here to trauma dump on Yukan " I just turned a corner and was here, I say I want to change the world but I don't really have a plan and all I really wanted to do was help the others at the monastery "

There was one more thing Katja wanted to know " Just obe last question. Thay cult leader if her had stayed and we beat him, if he threw down his weapon and begged for mercy would you give it to him even if he had killed Okami ? " she had picked okami as tge two seemed close so she wanted to see just what he thought he would do if someone killed a friend of his.

Hezekiah would arch an eyebrow and turn his gaze to Rei as well but would speak up before she had a chance to respond. “Are you not the wife of Yukan?” He would ask okami with a tone that was seemed to betray his mild annoyance “If not…you must at least be affiliated with him in some way, otherwise i dont see how one would assume that you were…“ he would add using a hint of deductive reasoning to make his assumption. “Whatever the case may be…i need to find him preferably as soon as possible.” he would say maintaining a safe distance from the table and its occupants. As he spoke his eyes would scan the apparent samurai from head to toe pausing at the hilt of her sword before trailing back up to her face. Likewise he would briefly scan the bull beastman to her side, then the other man a human like himself, his expression not so much as twitching as he maintained his indifferent gaze and posture as if this entire situation were nothing more than an inconvenience.

"Least I can do."
He replied. In truth, it might not have been enough. But maybe he'd make it up to her some other way. Maybe take a crack at improving her weapons should he make big enough to become a better smith.

Vince poured himself a fourth glass. While feeling buzzed, he was far from stumbling around yet. The same, however, could not be said for one particular person. The mechanic's attention swiftly left the game as Rei came over with her much calmer and more level-headed friend.

"Wife? I didn't know you two were that close." Particularly considering what she and Toro were talking about. Between Okami's flushed face and the bull's own expression, he could.

To answer the man's question actually, Vince began to point down the path which Yukan had went. And gave the man a piece of the puzzle to the big question of the evening. "Where's Yukan?"

"I saw him go down that path with Katja. Didn't seem much for the party." He said, pointing to the washing area. "I remember something about her wanting to talk with Yukan about....something in private."

"You mean by the washing area?"
Someone chimed in. ".....Huh. You guys have mixed bathes around here.....right? Sounds like one way to spend your evening." An empty glass slid over to him, though this one was from someone else. Vince looked over at Rei with a raised brow.

A look left. A look right. Then he at Rei and simply, shrugs. "I don't see no ice machines. Don't see no fresh ice lying around either. I think the only around here who can make ice is you. Somehow anyway." He wasn't exactly sure that she'd be able to do so, but a part of him was afraid she was going to whip her sword on in this state. So it was that he poured her a glass without ice and nudged it over.

"Try not to puke it up, lightweight."
Vince said smugly to Rei, before drinking down his fourth cup and pouring himself his fifth cup of sweet Rice Wine.

Okami sighed. They came to her with this foolishness at what had to have been the worst time. God only knew what was going through Toro's mind at that moment. Or, really, anyone who might've overheard them. She turned to the three, a somewhat somber expression on her face.

"I know well the stories of the Amphibious Vanquisher, the Anti-Slaver Commander, and the Triad Allied Leader. You can't help but to hear those stories as you roam the Republic and learn of its culture and its history. They're what inspired me to fight for him. Oh, and fight, we did. We fought, killed and were nearly killed alongside one another on the battlefield. I know the legend well. I trust him with my life and he trusts me with his. I believe in his dream. And yet..." she paused, taking a swig from her drink, "Yukan Koyake? The man left behind when you strip away the armor and the weapons and the titles? For all intents and purposes... that's still a stranger to me. A pleasant one, but a stranger all the same. Are we close? Eh, make what you will of it?"

There was an aloofness to her as she spoke. The bonds that you formed with others on the battlefield couldn't be compared to those that people forged in times of peace. Vincent could decide for himself how close they really were through her words; it wasn't something so easily answered with a yes or no. Then, after a brief pause and overhearing some of the others whispering a bit too loudly, The Ronin chuckled to herself.

"I admit, though. I am surprised to hear that he's taken a liking to a woman. Never seen that side of him, myself. But then..." her words faded into laughter for a moment, "I suppose Katja would be the one to bring that side out of a man, wouldn't she?"

Then, she turned her attention to Hezziah and Hezziah specifically.

"You would be wise not to spread rumors like that. It's all in good fun, but The Republic doesn't take kindly to liars. And I can't say that I do, either. So... let's try to be a little more honest this time around," Okami stood, sloshed her drink around, took another sip, then met the mage dead in his eyes; a newfound coldness in her gaze as she studied his facial expression, "What do you want with Lord Yukan?"

Hezekiah Gale
IMG_3403.jpeg

Hezekiah would listen to Vincent and the Comment from another denizen at the table. It seemed that his new boss was at the local public bath and with a woman no less. This was perfect, maybe if he caught him at a bad time the Tanuki would get flustered and send him on his way without him having to get involved with whatever the hell this little faction was doing. He could then return home having kept his end of the bargain. His wishful thinking would spur him on. “Thank you very much for the intel, you all enjoy your night.” he would say mildly excited for the first time this evening, and it would show in his face and tone. He would turn to head in the direction Vincent had indicated but would pause mid-step as Yukan’s “wife” began speaking.

He would listen intently as she spoke of Yukan’s accolades, it didnt take him long into his hearing her to realize that she was not in fact the Tanuki warlords wife. When she gave him the warning about spreading rumors he would swallow hard picking up on the tension in her voice. He hoped his back being to her would mask his brief slip up of his demeanor. “Spreading rumors was not my intention…it seems I received bad intel recently.” he would say careful to keep his tone even and without any notable malice or disrespect. It was the final question that would send a chill up his spine…or rather the Icy way in which it was delivered.

Still he wanted to maintain a bit of anonymity to his intentions, if someone went off to warn Yukan that he was coming to see him then his chances of being dismissed by catching him in a compromising position would evaporate. Thus he would turn to meet the samurai woman’s Icy gaze with his usual indifference.
“As for my business with him? That remains between me and Yukan…” he would say, his external demeanor was one of an emotionless calm, yet internally he was hoping with every fiber of his being that he hadn’t just screwed himself out of an easy escape from this task ahead of him. His resolve was beginning to crumble under the Samurai’s Cold eyes so he would turn once more and begin walking towards the public bath.
