Roleplay Availability
Roleplay Type(s)
Hey. Hey dice-using friends. Psst. I have a question.

Hypothetically speaking, if I wanted to use a system for a roleplay that mostly about magic (the kind with wands and spellbooks and enchantments) and politics, but also am totally green to running a dice RP, what systems would you recommend I look into and why?

I'm not up to anything, i promise.

World of Darkness, some ancillary texts, and possibly Mage: The Awakening would work very, very well for this. I'm actually planning a hack for almost this exact purpose in a month or so. I could give you my notes, possibly, but you'd need the books for context. Why do I recommend these? Because they are explicitly built to do what you're asking. Assuming you're setting this in the modern day.

Hrm. Fate could work. Versatile and easy to use. Also free.

Anything else I'd recommend is very niche, or specifically very dark.

Check out anything associated with Mage : The Awakening, if you can. Hrm, and I'm sure there's some core World of Darkness stuff that might help, like Second Sight, but that emphasizes psychic powers.

Second Sight sounds like it could be useful for something in the future.

Mostly what I'm looking for is a fairly balanced way of calculating spell strength, mediating combat, and determining the success/fail rate of important actions.

Mage does that, pretty much.

I could modify Crucible a bit for your purposes if you wanted, too.
