"Attention passengers, we will be docking momentarily. Please prepare to disembark."
Des'amesea blinked drowsily as the announcement startled him from his doze; first his rear eyes, set along his temple, and then his larger fore-eyes. He had woken from Cryostasis the day before and was still a bit woozy and weak. Six years was a long time to be asleep.
He glanced out the window at the surface of the orb which had been getting closer all day. It started out blue, so blue--almost 70% of the planet was covered in water--broken by white clouds and the shapes of seven continents bursting with strange flora and fauna. He got a bit breathless with excitement every time he thought about it. Now it was a patchwork of vegetation and city, interspersed with pockets of water as they neared the landing site.
He placed the required mask over his face as the shuttle's shadow showed stark on the landing strip. This atmosphere was too low in oxygen content for the Elgok to breathe.
"Please line up at the bay doors for arrival."
The doors opened, and the first rush of air was cool and dry on Des'amsea's skin. The airstrip faced the enormous domed structure of their residence here, and a group of natives met the disembarking Elgok to escort them.
The humans were smaller than the Elgok, the tallest reaching only to Des'amsea's shoulder. They did not speak to the explorers, and there was uncertainty in the single pair of eyes of each of them.
Des'amsea lifted his mask for a moment, breathing in a deep gulp of Earth's air. It was thin, dry, and full of unfamiliar smells.
And it was wonderful.
