Background: Riku Takahashi is your standard Japanese young man all things considered. His father Oliver Williams is a well acclaimed British historian and professor at The University of Tokyo. He had moved to Japan for a business opportunity in an effort to make more money. He met Riku's mother at the same university, while she was attending in fact which became a point of contention among other students and even her own family. Riku's mother Otake Takahashi is a rather intense woman. Soon after the two had met, they were married in 1998. Riku was then born in 2000.
Riku being the son of a historian grew to love history and not so much the book reading and analyzing of events, but more the great people and mythologies of the world. This eventually led to him becoming a bit of a medieval history nut, larper and RPG fan. He became an avid video game fan through friends at school introducing him to Nintendo games in elementary school. As he grew and learned he found himself constantly fascinated with knights and imagined himself as one whether he was awake or dreaming. So you can imagine how closely he followed the development of Sword Art Online when it was initially announced. He saved up as much money as he could and jumped on the release of Sword Art Online and the Nerve Gear, being one of the lucky few to grab a copy. Riku sealed himself into his apartment in preparation for his gaming binge. Riku jumped into the game with excitement, made his avatar based on a European legend he had read about, and then proceeded to lose himself in the vast VRMMORPG. He power leveled his blacksmithing in order to bring him a step closer to knight-hood along with a few side-quests. Then the announcement was made. After initial shock, disbelief and a whole flurry of emotions ranging from rage to joy. The severity of the situation somewhat... broke him.
Personality: Riku Takahashi is an honest and upfront young man. His parents were well educated and they made sure he would be as well. He has a respect for knowledge and is fairly studious in school. He is about as awkward as the average young adult and doesn't have any social hang ups that prevent him from making friends and socializing, though he has never had a girlfriend. In summation Riku Takahashi is man of fine moral character and decent intelligence, all in all normal. If you can get past the obsession with swords and knights he's rather nice and you won't find yourself having any problems with him. Who he is now however is quiet a bit... different so to speak.
The man known as AceDurendal is basically the same as Riku albeit inflated and taken to the nth degree. To put it simply his wish was granted; he became the knight he always desired to be at the cost of his mental health. He embody's all the standard views of knights and chivalry and even tends to speak like one to the best of his ability. While he has changed its not like he has gone completely delusional and thinks Kayaba is an evil wizard. Its more that the bing known as Riku has the mask of the knight on which protects his minds from things which may be too taxing. He is still himself at the heart of it all and he will probably be pretty normal in conversation, but don't be surprised when in the heat of battle he demands a duel, pledges an oath of fealty, or calls others a knave. If things get particularly bad he may try and make and order of knights or a kingdom.
