Sword Art Online . . .
Welcome one and all to my SAO-inspired roleplay! This will serve as a post for both the interest thread and OOC. I figured that since, canonically, SAO was released yesterday, I would start my own small SAO group roleplay. I’m taking tons of inspiration from the light novel, anime, fandom wiki, and a personal one x one I did with a friend.
Below will be more information concerning the roleplay including Lore, Storyline, Characters, Mechanics, and Rules. So feel free to read more to learn about how this roleplay will work.
I want to make it clear that this roleplay will be, mostly, original in the storyline. It’s also very heavily influenced by what the players choose to do throughout the roleplay. Keep in mind:
- There will be no canon characters minus a few crucial ones such as Kayaba. So Kirito, Asuna, and the such will not be present or mentioned.
- I will stick to the original game as closely as I can, so each floor will be the floor present within the light novel/anime. However, a lot that isn’t shared will be left up to my own interpretation. Quests and items will also be something based on interpretation.
- As I stated with the floors, there are still a great majority of floors that aren't actually known because they were never visited. This is where creativity will play a crucial part.

The Lore In the year 2021, a piece of groundbreaking technology was introduced to the world. The Nervegear - a fully functional virtual reality helmet that accessed the user’s brain through high-density microwave transceivers, allowing the user to experience all five senses while playing a game. It blocks every movement command given from the brain to the body, allowing the player to FullDive without physical injury to their body.
To the normal user, this piece of technology seemed impossible and many people were hesitant. However, when the Nerbvegear was released to the market in May 2022, everyone in every household flocked to get their hands on the equipment. Despite the high-end cost, it was doable to the consumer, and with its revolutionary technological promises, it was hard to say no.
In early August of the same year, a handful of individuals were given access to beta test a brand-new videogame. At first, there was speculation as to whether or not the game itself would fulfill the nearly impossible promises that it gave. However, considering the popularity of the Nervegear and the success it had, everyone waited in anticipation.
On November 5, the year’s most anticipated game had been released to the public. Ever since its success among the beta tester, everyone around the globe kept a close eye on the game's development. A full-body VR experience that was bound to shake the world, a name that would soon ring clear to those who fell victim to it; Sword Art Online. Once sales dropped, thousands of copies sold instantly. People camped outside stores for days or weeks just to be the first person to get a copy of the new game. The market for Sword Art Online was wide, no other game had come close to the experience Sword Art Online would offer. Everyone wanted a taste, young and old. However, that decision would soon come to haunt those who played the game on release.
November 6, 2022. Anyone with access to the internet would come to learn about that faithful day. Sword Art Online servers would officially go online. Upon entering Sword Art Online, no one could help but be in awe at the mastery behind the game. It truly felt like the real world. You could interact with the surrounding area, you could feel things, smell things, taste things, and move around freely. Players would drop everything and spend hours just looking around at all the possibilities. However, not even 5 hours hours after the official launch of Sword Art Online, something strange began to happen. No one could log out.
10,000 people were trapped inside the walls of Sword Art Online. No one on the outside could prevent the chaos that would strike the victims of the game. If the Nervegear was forcibly removed, they would die. If they were killed within the game, whether it be by another player or creature, they would die in real life. The high-density microwave transceivers would fry the brain, leaving players with only one choice. Survive.
From that moment forward, thousands of people were lost to the world.

The Story One week has passed since the entrapment of the players on Sword Art Online. Around 400 people have already met their end due to families forcefully removing the Nervegear, getting killed by the creatures of the world, their own choice, or the emergence of a new group of players known as the Player Killers (PKers). Throughout the week, in the outside world, a group known as the SAO Incident Victims Rescue Force began moving all 10,000 players to local hospitals, allowing their bodies to continue living.
Our story will start after one week has already passed, so the initial shock and fear will have set in by now. Our characters, which will be explained a bit later, meet up after accepting a minor quest outside of the Town of Beginnings. The quest will bring all of the characters together, as they start a small adventure in search of a rare golden wine. This adventure would turn out to be something much greater, and our characters must quickly decide the future of themselves and Aincrad.
The Goal The goal is that after they meet, they choose to stick together for the sake of numbers. Those who choose to participate in this roleplay will get to play these characters as they explore each floor, the quests, and the opportunities as if it were a fun fantasy campaign.
Our characters may not kill every boss to advance to the next floor, other parties could easily accomplish it as well. And we will not roleplay every single day throughout the years they may be stuck in the game, time skips will be provided where we deem necessary.

The Characters Your character was one of the many people who had purchased the Nervegear and anxiously anticipated the release of Sword Art Online. They managed to get ahold of a copy of the game by some means and made the same mistake as everyone else - played the game. Like thousands of others, your character is now trapped in the world of Sword Art Online. The only thing your character can do is continue surviving as intended. But what will happen when you and a group of other players are unexpectedly thrown into a quest to potentially save Aincrad?
Your character met up with a strange fellow, he called himself Sir Lucius. He was a shady fellow but he was giving a relatively simple quest in exchange for a hefty reward. You take the quest from the man hidden among the shadows in the dark alley and begin to head to the gates of the Town of Beginnings, where Sir Lucius instructed you to go. Upon making it there, you find a group of players (the other characters).

The Mechanics This roleplay will function like a typical roleplay, but it will include some basic mechanics similar to DND because this is meant to simulate a video game!
Tracking The roleplay will be relatively loose. There’s no need to keep track of cor, inventory, and experience. Players may carry whatever they wish or buy whatever they wish within reason, just use common sense. For example, it’s unlikely early roleplay they can purchase a 10,000 cor weapon. Also, they probably don’t suddenly have a rare weapon in their inventory a few weeks in.
The only items that will be tracked are rare drops (weapons, equipment, items) and quest items.
Levels We will be leveling up throughout the roleplay, so we won’t be stuck at one level forever! Leveling will be done with common sense as well, based on quests and time spent throughout the roleplay. With higher levels comes better skills, items, cor, etc.
Additionally, all characters will start around level 5 (it can range depending on what your character did)!
Fighting In the spirit of Sword Art Online, magic is not present as well as basic ranged weapons like Bows. After all, these items were omitted with a purpose - Kayaba intended to make the game much more difficult. As your character will start with a one-handed sword, from there you can work your way up to two-handed swords, pole-arms, shields, etc.
Fighting will work through a dice system. We will definitely be roleplaying fight scenes because that’s the best part! The system will be fairly easy and will be similar to DND. A player will roll to see if they hit, and then will roll for damage! That’s pretty much it, there may be advantages or disadvantages depending on weapon skills and such. This will scale with leveling.
Skills That’s right, we will have some skills! There are a whole buttload of skills that someone can take advantage of, including weapon skills (blade throwing), support skills (hiding, picking, acrobats), and other skills (cooking, fishing, leatherworking).
I will also be adding a few additional skills that aren’t present in SAO as a whole for the sake of enjoyment and to expand upon what our players can do. This includes shield skills, dagger skills, etc. These skills will scale with leveling, and will be used during combat!
Status Everyone will start out on a green status, but that can change depending on you play the roleplay. If you hurt or injure a player, you will become a yellow player. If you kill a player, you will become a red player. However, if you kill a player, you won’t remain red forever.

The Rules
Follow basic RPA rules and regulations, as well as basic etiquette! As the saying goes, hate the character, not the creator. If anyone is being unnecessarily rude, they will be removed.
As the creator of this roleplay, I may have the final say in many things. HOWEVER, I want to give everyone an opportunity to speak their mind and voice their thoughts. So if you ever have an idea for a skill, quest, or floor, please let me know! Also, let me know if there are any concerns.
There will be no beaters or beta testers, this is just so everyone can suffer but also because beta testers are a small percent of the population in the game. I may change my mind if you convince me!
There will be no OP characters at the start of the roleplay. Later on, you’re more than welcome to have a strong character but one-hit killing big bosses will probably not happen. As I said, everyone suffers!
For the sake of my sanity, not everything will be completely game-accurate. There may be some minor differences in the world, and there will be some major interpretations. Any huge events seen in the anime or light novel may also not be present, it depends on how the characters go throughout the world. This will be something we create, an “if Asuna and Kirito didn’t find out about Kayaba so early on” scenario.
There may be death. Of course, I will not be killing off characters without consent but death is a possibility! It is a death game after all!
There will be some darker themes present including death, gore, trauma, etc.
This will be, ideally, a long roleplay. It will also be relatively short paced so don’t feel pressure to make a post every single day. Please, take your time! They didn’t beat the game in a day after all!
Please have good grammar and English. You don’t need cool code to join either, I know BBCode is a pain. This will be a semi-lit roleplay, so a few paragraphs if possible is ideal!
The characters are going to start a bit older than when Kirito/Asuna started, so preferably characters around the 18 mark. I will also be playing multiple NPCs, we love a good NPC.
Discord may be used for OOC if everyone decides on it.

There will be some darker themes present including death, gore, trauma, etc
Sword Art Online . . .
Welcome Welcome one and all to an SAO experience! Since today is technically the official release date of SAO, why not celebrate by making an SAO roleplay? That's right, your character will be given the opportunity to experience SAO to its fullest, that is if it's something that interests you! If you're interested in playing a part in this SAO roleplay, then keep reading and maybe, if possible, comment below so I know!
Below is a bit of information concerning the roleplay, if more people are interested then I will expand upon the idea!
About SAO The date is November 6, 2022. The year's most anticipated game is about to be released to the public. Ever since the beta testers got ahold of the game in August, everyone around the globe kept a close eye on the game's development. A full-body VR experience that was bound to shake the world, a name that would soon ring clear to those who fell victim to it; Sword Art Online. Once sales dropped, millions of copies sold instantly.
Your OC Your character was one of the many people who had purchased the nerve gear and anxiously anticipated the release of Sword Art Online. But what happens when you and a group of other players are thrown into a quest to save Aincrad and release the people stuck inside the game?
The RP Mechanics I haven't decided fully on game mechanics, it will be something that should appeal to the majority who apply. I was thinking of a mix of free flow and dice mechanics. We don't have to keep track of gold, inventory, skills, etc but it might be fun to make it so we have to use dice when in combat. After all, not everyone can immediately kill every creature. Of course, we could also keep track of everything! This is all completely open.
Rules?
Follow basic RPA rules and regulations, as well as basic etiquette. As the saying goes, hate the character, not the creator.
I'm leaning towards no beaters so everyone can suffer but that is also open, this could be changed if someone convinces me!
No OP characters, we can have strong boys but nothing like one-hit big monsters strong, not at the start at least. Everyone would be starting out on level 1 or something around that range. Higher level? Go ahead and be OP!
For sake of the roleplay, no cannon characters (minus a few) will be introduced in this RP. So, Kirito and Asuna? Gone. I also want to make it a bit original so we won't be following the main storyline, meaning no beating the game by killing the game master. Maybe all 100 floors? That's the goal!
Also for the sake of my sanity, not everything will be completely game-accurate. There may be some differences here and there and that's fine.
Thoughts Let me know your thoughts and we can get going from there! Nothing is set in stone because I didn't want to go too in-depth without first getting a gauge of interest.
