Some are more notable than others, having healed better, though there are a handful of 'ugly' scars on his skin as well. The most obvious ones are likely the two circular-ish scars, one on his chest, just below his right collarbone, and the other on the left side of his abdomen.

What's there beyond the surface?

Likes: animals, music, playing the guitar, hiking, nature
Dislikes: bees, large crowds of people, cold weather, mushrooms, reading

Fears: water (swimming), scorpions

Personality: Carlos pretends to be closed off, feeding off of the 'silent observer'-type of persona. He's an observer, an analyst, and doesn't rush things. He's a grump, and doesn't shy away from telling people what he thinks of them. Feelings are something he pretends to never have heard of, though he's a big softie at heart. Once one gets past the brash outer layer, and gets the man to trust them, one might actually discover the big softie that Carlos really is. He is a devoted and caring father, with a soft spot for his family. He'll take care of other people as well, though never under the guise of actually caring for them. Brave and experienced, he's usually not someone who partakes in any risky or irresponsible behaviour. Carlos' past has hardened his walls, though he's never quite lost his humorous outlook on life - no matter how bad the situation might look.

What's in the past?

Carlos came from a military family, so he moved a lot when he was a kid. He grew up on various military bases all across the States, constantly having to adapt to new settings, new surroundings and new people. When Carlos was five, his miracle baby sister Elena was born. Sadly; however, two years after her birth, their mother died from the lung cancer she had been fighting for a decade already. This left the then seven-year-old to mostly care for his sister, Elena, when their father was deployed again. Carlos thus grew extremely close to his sister, the siblings sharing an incredibly intimate bond. When Elena had the possibility of moving to Boston at the mere age of thirteen to frequent a high-class dance school, Carlos didn't stop her.

He was at college at the time, pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Education - but he dropped out in the middle of the first semester, instead deciding to join the American Army so he could help finance his sister's education instead. Carlos graduated top of his class after rigorous training and weeks of bootcamp, getting assigned to the Special Ops unit. He was deployed numerous times, always making sure to spend as much time with his sister whenever he came back home.

Carlos met Isabella Hernandez when they were both twenty-three. Young, stupid, and naive, it didn't take them long to fall for one another. The pair got married only one year later. They struggled with the distance a lot, especially when Carlos would go no-contact for weeks whenever he was away on dangerous missions. And yet, Isabella always waited patiently for her husband to return home from his deployments, priding herself in being an amazing military wife, and even having other people address her as her husband's rank. The couple expected their first child when Isabella had just turned twenty-six. Nine months later, Mia Olivia Garcia was born.

Carlos wanted to be a better father than his own, and made sure to spend as much time with his daughter as possible. And while he did manage to build a great and lasting relationship with his child, the relationship with his wife, Isabella, deteriorated. She couldn't handle her husband's job anymore, begging him to resign and stay home, begging him to change his career into something safer. After Carlos' last deployment, he returned home to find his wife in bed with another man. Isabella didn't even fight when Carlos presented the divorce papers to her. It was for the best for the both of them.

Mia; however, was to stay with her mother after Carlos lost the custody battle. His job was deemed unsafe to care for the little girl, especially during deployments. Not soon after the divorce was settled, Isabella and Mia moved to New York. Carlos was quick to request a discharge from the military not soon after, jumping from job to job in the hopes of finding something that would stick with him like the Army had.

Appearance:
With a wiry build and standing at 5’4”, Ada possesses more strength than most would give her credit for. While she has always had a small frame, during the first few months of the outbreak her muscles hardened under the strain of survival. Her face is long and angular, softened only by her long, auburn-red hair. A spray of freckles coats her face, shoulders, and harms -- something she was previously self-conscious about but now seems trivial in comparison to the end of civilization. Her nose is slightly crooked, never quite healed from an altercation that occurred shortly before the outbreak.

Although Ada once enjoyed rocking large hooped earrings and nose rings, the piercings have since closed up. Her tattoo, a small line-work seedling on her arm, was the only body modification that survived the end-times. Like most people who had survived this long, she has a collection of scars across her body. The only remarkable scar she has is a small, puncture-like wound where a parasite attempted to burrow into her.

Personality:
Likes: Snow, coffee with the caloric value of chocolate cake, film, girls *ahem*, 80’s and folk music, edibles, cats, graphic novels, beanies

Dislikes: Smoking, overly-complicated coffee orders, puns, hot weather, film snobs, evangelists (of any kind)

Fears: Insects (for obvious reasons), claustrophobic spaces, ending up alone, being alive but not herself

Stand-offish and dry-witted, Ada does not have many friends and prefers it that way (at least that is what she says.) Even before the outbreak she was slow to trust, a trait that has only strengthened since the world ended. Although she projects an air of confidence, she conceals a lot of insecurities about her worth and purpose in life. Hardly older than a child, she craves approval and stability, though would never admit, not even to herself. That being said, when she trusts she trusts deeply, and will cling to that feeling like a life-preserver. Although she claims she doesn’t care much about anything, the opposite is true; she cares almost too much -- about what people think of her, about their pain, and what the future holds.

Backstory:
Ada was born and raised in South Boston -- colloquially known as Southie to the locals -- and even after living in California for two years still considers herself a northeastern girl at heart. Her parents, Erin and Isaac, split when Ada was five and shortly after her baby sister Mae was born. A successful attorney, Isaac purchased a brownstone in the wealthy Beacon Hill neighborhood. During the first few years he would sweep the girls away to his fancy townhome every other weekend, always taking them to dinner and ice cream at least one of the days. However, as time passed, their visits became fewer and further between, but when they did see each other Isaac always remained the charismatic and doting father they always knew.

Ada and Mae spent the rest of the time with their mother, who left her job at the firm where she previously worked with Isaac, and became a lawyer at a small, independent practice. Tensions between Ada and Erin increased as Ada grew older. As Erin frequently had to work overtime and often came home completely exhausted, Ada was usually responsible for taking care of Mae and missed her mother’s presence at school and sports events.

When Ada was fourteen, Isaac moved to New York with his new fiance, and became a rare presence in the girls’ lives. Struggling with keeping her practice afloat and witnessing her ex’s apparent financial and romantic success, Erin began to rely more and more upon the bottle to cope. Ada not only took responsibility for getting herself and Mae to school and fed, but also caring for her mother when she had too much to drink.

This continued until Ada was in her third year of high school, when a concerned teacher called Child Protective Services and the agency determined that Erin was unable to provide a safe home for the girls. Against Ada and Mae’s wishes, they were removed from their childhood home and Erin was admitted into rehab. When asked if he could take his daughters, Isaac refused, claiming that he could not provide for two more children in addition to the three others he had with his current wife. Ada saw through the lie, but could do anything about it.

Instead, she and Mae were sent to live with their maternal grandmother, Marie, who owned a townhome in the outskirts of Los Angeles. The transition was difficult -- the girls both left in the middle of their school years -- but Marie was welcoming and caring, and did her best to make them feel at home. After graduating high school, Ada got a part-time job as a barista and enrolled at a community college to study film, a passion of hers since early adolescence. Her grandmother wanted her to attend a four-year college, but Ada wanted to be around for Mae, who viewed her as almost a parental figure.

When she entered high school, Mae began to act out more often, skipping school to drink with friends and fool around with boys. Marie had recently become ill, and Ada’s attention shifted away from Mae and towards their grandmother. However, Ada eventually figured out what was going on, and had a huge fight with Mae which ended with Ada comparing her to their mom. Mae stormed out with her backpack and she let her go, thinking that she would come back in a few hours. When she didn’t return by morning, Ada began to panic, especially as news reports of a novel insect-transmitted virus began to spread. Through interrogation, Ada was able to learn from Mae’s best friend that she had bought bus tickets, and planned to travel back to Boston to find their mom.

Before Ada could go after her sister, the city went into lockdown due to the virus. She quickly returned home to Marie, only to find her twitching and convulsing on the bed. When she approached her grandmother to try to help, Marie attacked her, and Ada just barely managed to escape. After a day passed, Ada was picked up by the local military force and taken to a quarantine zone, where she begged for help to find her sister. When the help they promised would come eventually never came, she dedicated herself to finding another way to reunite with Mae.
