MAIN THREAD

Beginning Setting
May, Current Year
Around 10PM

You're arriving at the masquerade you've been oh so formally invited to, and you're ready to have fun. Well, maybe. It's a fairly warm night, but not hot enough that you're going to burn up. Maybe you're a little uncomfortable, maybe this is all new to you. Either way, it's a chance for you to be someone you're not.

Are you ready?

Aleigha really didn't feel right going to this party. Sure, getting to dress up in a dress you wouldn't normally get a chance to wear and donning an exquisite mask sounded like fun to the nineteen year old, but she had other responsibilities. Both of the twins had a fever, and her younger sister was more interested in perfecting her eyeliner than holding a puke bucket. Leah had been running around the house all day, cleaning this and cooking that, trying to make the twins comfortable while still keeping the house in order. Their father was at work and would be until late in the evening, and even though Leah's older sister was in town, she had her own shit going on.

In fact, though, it was Lisa's fault that Leah was even going to this party in the first place. A week or so ago when the invitation had come in the mail, Leah had taken one look at the fancy letter and thrown it in the trash along with the other junk mail. Somehow, Lisa went to throw something away and saw it. Was it the fancy calligraphy that caught her attention, or the intricate gold border? Who knew. Either way, she'd pulled the invite from the trash and harped on Leah until Leah finally agreed to go. Of course, that was before the twins got sick, and now Leah was determined not to go. Someone had to take care of the twins, and it wasn't going to be Sabrina, who hadn't come out of her room all day except to grab an apple and some water from the kitchen.

From the back of the house, Leah heard the front door open, and then Lisa's voice carried through the house. "LE-AHHH!" She sang to her sister, causing Leah to stop what she was doing and glance up.

"I'm busy!" Leah called back, her grip on the mop tightening as she started up again.

"Too busy to see the dress I just bought you?" Lisa popped her head into the dining room, grinning wickedly at her younger sister. "Come on-- you know you wanna see!" And then she disappeared, presumably heading back to the living room towards the front of the house. Leah groaned, looking down at her half mopped floor. "COME ON, LEAH!" Lisa called again, her voice carrying from the living room as though she were right beside Leah. Leah released a soft sigh, picking up the mop and dropping it back into the bucket. She hadn't figured out how to tell Lisa she wasn't going yet, and now her older sister had gone and bought her a dress? Fuck.

A moment later, Leah stepped into the living room, finding her sister standing by a garment bag she'd hung off of the coat rack. "Lisa, listen, the twins are sick and I just don't think-" She stopped in her tracks when Lisa held up a finger, moving to unzip the garment bag and reveal the dress to Leah.

When she caught sight of the beautiful piece, Leah's words died in her throat. It really was beautiful; Lisa had always had an eye for fashion. Growing up, Leah had been jealous of her because she seemed perfect in every way: fashionable, intelligent, funny, well-liked. Looking at the dress she'd bought, Leah slid her gaze back over to Lisa. "Jesus, Lis. It's beautiful."

"It is, and it'll be even more beautiful on you. Now go, shower and get ready." Lisa ushered her to the stairs, and it had been an hour or so since then, and Leah now stood in front of the full length mirror in her room, gaping at the dress. Lisa was right; it did look better on her than it did on the hanger. She'd lightly curled her hair and even did some basic makeup, and she really felt like a different person. Lisa had ordered a car for her so she wouldn't have to drive, and now she poked her head in Leah's room, grinning as she drank in her younger sister's look. "You look amazing. Your cars here, come on."

Leah looked at herself once more before she went downstairs, grabbing her purse and keys on the way out. The whole ride to the mansion where the party was being held, she ran her fingers through the bottom of her hair, growing more and more nervous. When the driver arrived at the mansion, she tied her mask on and got out of the car, thanking him and then starting towards the main door. The party was already in full swing when she got there, like it had been going on for hours. Hardly anyone looked at her, which made her less nervous as she stepped further into the main room, her attention pulled to the hanging crystal chandelier in the center of the room. This place was way too fancy for someone like her, and she felt quite out of place. But maybe, just maybe, she could find a way to have fun.

Stupid. That was the word that kept rolling around in Oscar's head. This whole thing was stupid. This whole day was stupid. This party was stupid. Him being here was stupid. Letting Wendy talk him into this was stupid. The idea of soulmates was stupid. This suit he was wearing was stupid. What even was the point of a masquerade? That's stupid too. Stupid stupid stupid.

The male that was brooding in his thoughts finally sighed and shook his head. He was being pessimistic. He knew that. It was supposed to be a fun party where the others were going to meet their soulmates. Fun. Right? Well if you ignored the fact they were all going to kidnap a human. Oscar had no intentions of doing so and he'd already told everyone in the family that. Getting all the people here made him feel guilty enough but straight up kidnapping someone? No thanks. When people go missing the humans start investigating that. The last thing the group needed was some human cops kicking down the door and arresting them all. Could you imagine the shit show that would be?

Another sigh. He ran a hand through his hair and reached into his pocket. There was the necklace he'd made. He hadn't told the others he was making one. He could feel the pull of his magic on the piece of jewelry. It was enchanted just like everyone else's in the family. Once it was around a human's neck they would do practically anything asked of them by the one who put it on. So why had he made one? Oscar stared at it with a mixture of regret and hope. Regret that he was even considering such a thing, hope that maybe...Just maybe...He could find someone he could love with all his heart.

A voice snapped the siren out of his thoughts. "Mr. Corsair!" Oscar slipped the necklace back into his pocket and turned to the sound of the voice. It was one of the butlers the family had hired for the evening. Oscar had taken it upon himself that day to make sure that the mansion was spotless. Wendy had tagged along too though he wasn't very sure why. Maybe she was making sure he wasn't going to blow the lid off the whole thing. A part of him was glad she was here even if he was still upset with her. The rest of the family was showing up later but the siren felt an odd sense of pride about the party. While he hadn't made many of the arrangements he had been in charge of getting everyone there. In that way he felt like if the party was a failure he would have let everyone down since he invited them.

"Yes?" Another problem. Since he'd arrived to the mansion it seemed like he and Wendy were getting pulled every which way. 'When should we start serving food? When should we start serving drinks? Where should we put these decorations?' It was honestly impressive how much the wait staff was doing to make sure the night went off without a hitch. Oscar of course didn't let those frustrations get to him. Oscar didn't have much practice dealing with humans but as long as he acted normal no one seemed to know or care what he was. The rest of the family would be arriving soon and Oscar really didn't want to interact with them. Daniel had done nothing but tell Oscar how inevitable arguing would be but Oscar was still upset.

With everything having been seen to the siren retreated into one of the bed rooms where he had set up earlier and locked the door. He picked up his mask sitting on the nightstand and turned it over in his hands. Was it too much? Possibly. Everyone had insisted he wear a mask though, and Oscar finally decided on one he liked. The male spent the next hour or so playing around on his phone trying to avoid the reality of his situation. At the end of the party they would be carting back unwilling humans to live with them and be their prisoners. If he'd eaten anything for breakfast he thought he might have been sick.

Once the sounds of the party got too loud for Oscar to ignore he decided he should at least make an appearance. No doubt his unofficial brothers and sisters were looking for him if they weren't too busy flirting. Life back at the house could get pretty lonely. Not that he didn't love hanging out with the group but it wasn't the same thing. In a weird way none of them were really attracted to each other. Maybe it was a pull all supernatural beings felt, to date a human. Hell, half of Greek Mythology was just Zeus not being able to keep it in his pants with humans, right?

Oscar sighed and put the mask over his face. He readied his nerves for one more moment before unlocking the door and walking out. He still had no intentions of dancing with anyone but he could at least observe what was going on. The siren was on the second floor of the mansion and walked over to the balcony overlooking the foyer where most people were congregating. He grabbed a drink that was passing by as the waiters carried them on silver trays. He didn't know what it was but hopefully it was alcohlic. He downed the glass in one gulp and placed the empty glass on the railing as he leaned onto it and looked below.

He didn't see anyone he immediately recognized. The door opening grabbed his attention and he noticed a rather pretty girl in a red dress walking in. He didn't know what he was supposed to feel when his soulmate arrived but she wasn't it. His eyes continued to scan the throng of people, happy to people watch until he saw a member of their group.

Cheryl Hernandez
It was a party like no other. Cheryl Hernandez was used to partying and raves and living the life but usually, those events involved much less satin and way too much skin, smoke, deafeningly loud music and recreational drugs. Ever since the tiny brunette left the group home, she was trying to live the life like every day was her last one on earth. Being an orphan taught her a thing or two and she was more than happy to leave the place that scarred her at so many levels. Physically a lot but emotionally, it was basically indescribable. It was safe to say Cheryl was looking for love and affection in the wrong places and craved to be seen and protected while her loud personality was definitely protruding and making it extremely difficult to happen.

Roaming the country in search of home, the small town was the last place one would expect the girl like the Latina to appear and yet, here she was, trying new things. Cherry called it a change of scenery. From big city where she was running around with one of the biggest gangs, calling their leader her boo, to a small place, maybe even some sort of diamond in the rough. The life here was quiet and peaceful, the parties were not of a kind she was used to but after a few weeks, Cheryl realized that this kind of serenity enveloping her hurt soul was exactly what she needed to recover from fast and furious mode that used to be her everyday’s routine.

What she did not expect was this party. When the invitation landed in her post box, Cheryl wondered. It as too pretty and looked way too fancy. Smooth firm paper decorated with intricate gold borders, the calligraphy was visibly handwritten and the dark in was still glistening if you turned it against the light. And in the middle of that gorgeousness, her name. Her full name. Cheryl Anabelle Hernandez Guerrera. How did people even know the whole thing? As far as she was concerned, she was simply Cheryl Hernandez, never introduced herself with the long-ass name, given to her back in the orphanage. Whether it was her real name or something the system came up with, she had no idea. But the fact of the matter was that she simply never used it so how…?

It was not important. What actually was important was that Cheryl was now standing in front of the mirror, her dark chocolate locks, curled into soft waves, were framing her faces, pinned up over her left ear. Her tiny figure was hugged by a ruby red gown with detailed decorations reminding of flames on her chest. The slit was rather high, revealing her leg, and simple gold sandals were wrapped around her ankles. Her face was flawless, smoky eyes being the most dominant part of her make up and once she applied one last layer of transparent lip gloss over the matte red lipstick, she was ready to go.

It was some time later that the car stopped in front of a lavish mansion and for the first time in her life, Cheryl was actually scared. What was she even doing in a place like this? Thank god for the mask, it was going to hide her insecurities at least a little bit. Cherry put it on, tying the thing at the back of her head and finally left the car to enter the house. Music was filling the house in soft tones and the clicks of her heels against the marble floor dissolved in its tones. Holding her long skirt slightly up at least kept her hands busy and she then joined the crowd, trying to find any familiar face.

💖 Feeling great, can't wait for the night to end!
wingname2.png

Tanwen rolled her eyes mostly to those in the family who were making a big deal of tonight, fretting over the things that may or may not have to be done; as if everyone was going to find their soulmate tonight, human or otherwise.

Tonight for her, this ball wasn’t going to be shackles. She had worked hard trying to coordinate, and book vendors that were a little higher scale than what she was used to working with. At first they were all resistant, but once they realised this was The Legacy Event a lot of them changed their tunes. As she was instructed, she did her best to get everyone to do a part, afterall it may become a major event for some. Tanwen was just about to find Xiang and ask when they’d be departing when she spotted Oscar about to get in a car he must have called ahead for.

“That little-” Tanwen gritted, swiping her clutch with her make-up inside and hauling to the car. Just barely catching it before the driver took it into drive. She opened the opposite door, hopping in;
“Me too, Good Sir.” she added to the driver.

Tanwen didn’t look at Oscar, just as she assumed Oscar wouldn’t look at her. Dregi, Daniel! This idiot isn’t even going to know I saved him from another ‘we’re family you can’t act like this talk’. Pulling out her phone, she quickly texted Li Kai that she was taking Oscar early with her to help with any last minute things that Vendors might need, and Oscar was taking the responsibilities seriously. Twmffat

Only the base elements of her make-up done, Tanwen went straight for the powder room to finish before meeting and greeting the vendors. She smiled, happy that the place would surely be a favorable and lasting memory of her sweat, tears, and sleepless nights to coordinate with different time zone vendors. Even though she was being asked questions she had already given the information previously, the stress began melting away.

Looking up, she saw Oscar answering questions; And albeit a little stiff, he was fairing well. I guess he was paying more attention to the planning than I originally thought. Tanwen pulled out her phone and snapped a picture, sending one to Daniel and the other to Li Kai saying ‘see, he’s taking it seriously.’.

Now that she took planning and attending this event seriously, she wasn’t going to help with the next. Tonight, she would dance, enjoy food by a 3-Star Michelin chef, and go home. That way in the years to come she can claim she “tried” to find her soulmate- and live happily ever after alone, with the practically perfect life she’d built.

“Ahh, the time-” She returned to the powder room to finish putting her Jewelry and mask on. When she reached into her bag, she originally pulled out the anklet her Father passed to her. It was the piece that He gave to her biological Mother. With a disgusted look and a passing angered thought of how the hell did that get in here, she pulled out the studded earrings she ordered for tonight's ball. Sure, she made it her bonded piece and even agreed to the suggestion of Oscar putting a little of his magic on it, but she had no need for it. This was simply her aesthetic for tonight. How often did she even actually wear gold jewelry anyways?

Knowing that the guests were beginning to show up, she went to knock on the door Oscar had taken. However she hesitated, feeling that even if she wanted to comfort Oscar that her words never reached him properly; I’ll tell Daniel where he is.

Now down stairs, she began greeting the few that trickled in. No matter how confidently Tanwen lied to herself that there was not a single chance her Soulmate would be here tonight, she continued to refuse looking anyone directly in their eyes. A safe guard she unknowingly did.

Now the guests entered in droves and she relinquished having to welcome every guest. Taking a glass of champagne she was underage to drink, she sipped it finding Daniel.

“Daniel!” She reached out to hold his elbow for his attention; Tanwen looked side to side, hoping to make sure none of the other supernaturals could hear;
“I saved your song bird this morning, however it seems to have locked itself in its cage. Please be aware to give the bird a little encouragement tonight.”

Tonight was an occasion unlike any other. For some, it was a massive party; for others, it was a chance to unwind all their pent-up stress, and for a few, it was a chance to meet their soulmate. Whether or not they shared similar interests or intentions, the party that was being held would spark a new chapter in everyone's life. Whether they liked it or not. The young pup adjusted his uniform as he looked in the mirror. A heavy sigh of nervousness and fear overwhelmed his consciousness. He hadn't had human interaction for the longest time, not since his incident with Aaron that almost had revealed himself to the human world. The young pup could only sigh as he looked at himself in the mirror. Thinking about the negative things that could occur should any of his siblings slip up and reveal themselves to humanity. Would the pitchforks and torches or the painful experiments come first? He thought jokingly inside his head as he tugged on his collar.

Truthfully, everything could be forgiven and accepted. He could attend the party with no qualms or overlining issues. He could have fun, talk to the others, maybe even shimmy on the dance floor a little. However, there still laid one factor that made tonight even worse for the young pup. "Why is this suit so itchy!" The pup had been struggling not to claw his suit into pieces. Not only was his outfit expensive, he certainly didn't want to receive scolding looks from his siblings. He would have been more than happy to attend the dance in a hoodie and a nice pair of shorts, but noooo, he had to dress just like a boring businessman. He wasn't sure how humans could wear these things. Then again, his sense of touch was sensitive, given his race. He had felt his phone vibrate while he was lost in his thoughts, seeing that Wendy had ended up sending him a photo of Oscar. "He might be taking it seriously, but he doesn't seem to be having fun. It seems I'm not the only one who'd prefer something smaller."

Daniel began to hurry towards the party as he attempted to straighten his outfit with the constant itchiness that was practically driving him insane in the process. Perhaps he would celebrate out in the mountains by burning it and pretending he lost it or something. While attempting to calm his nerves with his own humorous antics, his head could never escape the constant thumping in his chest. Daniel had always loved parties, especially during his high school and college days when he was often referred to as a "party animal," ironically enough. He loved to drink and have fun with others, in much more comfortable clothes at least. However, these kinds of parties, we're a bit much for his taste. He wasn't fancy or elegant, nor did he ever try to pretend to be as such. He was more of a country bumpkin than anything. And the fact there was a possibility he'd have to kidnap someone made all the things worse in his mind.

Beneath his somewhat pleasant exterior, he was a beast through and through. A wild inflation of emotions was dangerous for his kind, and human and werewolf relationships never ended well in the end. Even if he did have a soulmate here, he would prefer not to meet them. He was fine. He had his family, his father, his old pack. There wasn't really anything he would so desire. Why did he need to find this soulmate of his? And how would she react if they knew about his beast and that he essentially kidnapped her? The constant negativity in his head caused the pup to shake his head frantically as he watched the humans before him dance and laugh with one another. "God, I need a drink. Or two. Or ten. Ten sounds like a good start." He said as he felt a tug on his elbow to see his sister partaking in the party drinks as she spoke about Oscar. "Oh. Convenient." He said, swiping the champagne from his sister. "Shouldn't you be drinking something more age appropriate? Like a Capri Sun or a Danimals of some sort?" He said, teasing his younger sister as he took a drink of the champagne. "Our little dove isn't the only one that needs a little encouragement tonight," Daniel responded, adding a little chuckle along to his words. "I can sense someone else is a bit worried about this event as well." He said, raising an eyebrow at her. In truth, he was mainly speaking about himself. His heart continued to pound as the sight of numerous humans filled his gaze, though it slowly eased up after taking a sip of his drink. "So, where is our little dove anyways?"

When Jinhai Sun's sister, Yawen, had mentioned attending a masquerade, he had simply brushed it off as silly.

They were both into adulthood by now and the whole idea of a masquerade seemed off-putting. Hidden identities, a crowded room—being amongst people who you didn't know without being able to see their expressions. It didn't interest him.

His casual dismissal had caused his sister to drag her heels in though, leaving him dodging phone calls and surprise visits to his shop left-and-right.

After her third attempt to break into his apartment to bother him, he had enough.

He had thrown the door open, grabbed her shoulders and bit back the urge to shake her as he snapped, "Fine! I know you're doing this because you think I'm some freak hermit who just plays with mud all day and needs friends; but, I'll bite. I'll go with you."

Yawen had let out a squeal of delight before she pulled him a hug, her eyes crinkling at the corners.

"I'm not just doing it to get you out," She had argued into his shoulder, patting between his shoulder blades. "I also wanna spend time with you. We've both been so focused on our jobs that I feel like we never see each other. I miss you."

Jin had softened considerably at the sentiment.

Attending a masquerade ball seemed like quite the unique experience, he conceded to himself, as he rented a tux and set out the off-white mask Yawen had found for him a few days ago.

So, when the time came, he found himself ready.

Smoothing a hand down the front of his lapel, he shot himself one last glance before he was leaving his room. He found his sister sprawled out on the couch, eyes on the T.V. and a bowl of popcorn resting on top of the sequined maroon folds of her skirt.

As he entered, he hesitated at her gasp.

Stopping short, he once more ran a hand over the lapels of his shirt with a tilt of the corners of his mouth.

His apprehension melted out the window as he felt hands cupping his cheeks, lifting his head to come face-to-face with his older sister.

"You're gonna make everyone swoon, man," She told him earnestly before she grinned, pinching his cheeks with a laugh that sounded a touch too-delighted. "Oh, I can't wait to see what kind of food they got there. I'm starving—but, I've also been snacking since I know rich people eat two little pinches of something and call it gourmet..."

Jin simply shook his head before he was pocketing his wallet, his keys and kissing his cat goodbye before slipping out the door.

The drive passed quickly.

As the pair stepped out from their car, they noticed the other guests arriving in droves. It had him shuffling closer to his sister, his palms already sweating at the idea of being in close contact with so many people.

"I'm not sure—" Jin began before he felt two strong hands clap his back and steer him forward.

"We're going," Yawen announced easily, her typically-bubbly voice sounding even more chipper. "And we're finding someone for you. I don't care it's a friend, a partner, a mortal enemy... just give me something here, kid! Besides, being social is good for you. Keeps you from getting frown lines or whatever."

"I've never heard that in my life," Jin snorted, unable to suppress his quiet bout of laughter as they passed through the doors and casually swept into the crowds.

Meilan
Meilan had been invited to fancy events before. It was expected when you are a semi-famous sportsman. But this was on a whole ‘nother level compared to what she was used to. Usually, when she was invited to events they were sport-centered events. With people who were like her. So when that fancy invitation fell into her hands the first thing that she did was call her sister. “Xinyi, you know that this is more of your thing.” Mandarin slipped effortlessly out of her as she spoke into the phone's speaker. “You have always been the elegant ballet dancer who knows high class.” She sighed to her older sister in their native tongue. Meilan stood in the middle of her apartment, staring down the black and gold invitation on the counter like it was a ticking time bond. And for her, it might well be one. She never felt comfortable in the company of the popular rich types. Even after she started gaining traction as a professional archer. Meilan was confident, sometimes even arrogant, but she knew that she was not part of the cool kids group. It’s why she called her sister. Xinyi was a ballet dancer, and a good one at that, she knew how to mingle with the people of high society. If anyone was going to help her get through this it was going to be her.

Meilan furrowed her brow when a series of giggles came to her through the phone. “Alright, alright calm down, I will help you, but why are you so worried. You are usually so confident.” She knew her sister wasn’t wrong. Running a hand through her hair she responded. “It’s a masquerade Xinyi and, as far as I know, I don’t know anyone there.” This wasn’t entirely untrue. Meilan could only base her masquerade etiquette on books and films, which she didn’t think would be the best sources to rely on. But that wasn’t all she was worried about. For her, masquerades meant dresses. And dresses meant she would be showing skin. “Meilan, I can hear the gears turning in your head, I am coming over before you can get too into your head alright.” With that Xinyi finished their call with the promise that they would be over soon to help Meilan prepare for this masquerade ball. ‘It’s a couple of days out, you have some time to prepare.' She told herself as if that would distract her. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go. In fact, it sounds like a fun opportunity to maybe make some new friends, if they were all bound to be much higher class compared to her.

It was the fact that she was going to attempt wearing a dress around a bunch of people she has never met. She also had no idea who sent this invitation to her. Which was also a bit freaky. Meilan sighed and tugged a minuscule knot from her hair. She did have nice wear for the more formal events she would attend. But for something like this she wanted to try something a little different from her usual suit attire. ‘It’s the perfect excuse to try something new.’ She told herself to try and ease her nerves before they became more overwhelming for her. With her mind settled Meilan nodded to herself with a new determined feeling in her gut. The days before the masquerade was filled with Xinyi helping Meilan pick out a dress to wear to this fancy event. With some gentle pressure from her sister, Meilan ended up picking a beautiful lavender-colored ball gown that lacked any sort of sleeve. Which meant her toned arms and shoulders would be on full display. When that night came she couldn’t but stare at her arms while her sister helped do her hair. “You’re going to make little holes in your arms with all that staring.” Her sister’s soothing Mandarin washed over her, pulling her from whatever trance she was in.

Meilan lifted her eyes to make eye contact with her sister through the mirror. “I am trying to tattoo my arm, you think it will work?” She asked with a hint of sarcasm in her tone. Xinyi let out a laugh at this, momentarily pausing her work on Meilan’s hair to collect herself. “There is the Mei I know now.” She joked placing the final touches in her younger sister’s hair. “There you look lovely.” Meilan smiled in the mirror at the lovely up-do her sister did. She had asked her to do it so that her hair wouldn’t get stuck in the elaborate design of her make. “It looks amazing.” She turned to beam at her sister before gently hugging her waist. “Of course it does, I wouldn’t let you leave this apartment before it did.” Xinyi responded effortlessly, a smile curled on her lips. It was Meilan’s turn to laugh as she released her sister from her hold. Rising from her seat she slipped on the matt lavender heels she already owned before this. “Do I look like a Disney princess?” Meilan asked, turning to her sister with a bit of twirl in her movement. “Yes of course, what did you want me to say, no?” Xinyi playfully, her smile ever-present. “Alright come on my lavender Cinderella, off to the ball.” Her older sister excitedly rushed her out of the room.

Xinyi dropped Meilan off at a gorgeous mansion where the masquerade was being held saying, “This way you don’t have to worry about picking up a car tomorrow.” Meilan promised to send a text when the event was over. After her sister left she felt the small nervous butterflies in her stomach. She steadied her hands by shoving her phone inside the white handheld purse she had brought with her. Meilan did one last mask check before confidently striding into the mansion with the other guests. It was hard to check her head from imagining scenarios of everyone staring at her, but she kept her eyes forward as she stepped inside. The warmth from all the people within immediately hit her, and she was glad that Xinyi had convinced her to wear a dress that lacked sleeves. It wasn’t an uncomfortable heat just yet, and Meilan hoped to keep it that way. As she looked over the crowds of people she immediately locked onto a younger-looking woman who had just had her champagne snatched from her by a younger-looking man. What caught her attention about this pair was that this young lady was dressed to the nines. ‘Oh my god, she looks amazing.' Meilan was too far to catch any of the major details of this woman. But the blonde woman was dressed in a flowy nude-peach-colored gown and what looked like a golden halo in her hair.

Meilan made a mental note of this young woman, seeing as though she gave her the vibe that she was the host, or one of the hosts, of this luxurious event. “I am in for a night." She mumbled to herself, swiping champagne off a nearby tray. If she was going to be surrounded by people who looked like that woman and her companion all night, she was going to need a bit more confidence. And what better way than a little buzz. Meilan wasn’t planning on getting drunk but a boost would be nice.

A week ago Astrala had received a invitation to a masquerade ball she was super excited, but when she realised it was the same day she and her family had planned for a vacation week, she insisted on not going because family always came first for her but her brother and sister convinced her to go as it was more of a ‘Once in a lifetime opportunity’.

“Bloomieeeee!!!”, yelled her younger sister Hope, More than Astrala her 17 yr old sister was more excited.
Smiling Astrala stood after Nyx finished with her hair and asked “You ready to show me the masterpiece you made for me?” Her sister Hope always wanted to be a fashion designer and took the masquerade ball as an opportunity to make Astrala a dress and a mask.
“Yesss! I know your gonna love it!” Said hope, tugging Astrala.

Opening her closet, Hope removes a beautiful purple dress. “Ohmygod!! You made this?” Astrala said with astonishment while taking the dress from her. “Yes I did! Do u like it?” Hope asked “No…I LOVE IT!” She immediately went and changed into it and came out twirling around and asking Hope how it looked.

“You look perfect!” She exclaimed and Astrala hugged her sister tightly profusely thanking her.

“Time for your Masssssk!!” Hope ran to her room and came back with a black and purple mask with a rose that perfect matched her dress, smiling wide she took it and tied it up, “Now ur perfect!” Said Hope and finally finding happiness Astrala thought maybe ….just maybe the ball might be fun.

Throughout the whole ride she fidgeted with her fingers and lips in a nervous habit, her brother was giving her a ride in his car to the ball. He repeatedly assured Astrala everything would be okay and fine and to just enjoy herself, but Astrala couldn’t help but be nervous, when they finally reach the place Astrala couldn’t help but gawk at the huge mansion and beautiful layout, when her brother stopped the car, she hugged her brother tight and closed the car door taking a deep breath she walked inside, the hall was crowded and filled with beautiful ladies and handsome gentlemen but curious Astrala searched for a familiar face maybe she could find someone she knew? Maybe she wouldn’t spend the night alone?

    skeptical, apprehensive

"this is a dialogue."
Thoughts. "The worst thing you can do when facing writer's burnout is NOT WRITING." Xiang reads the bolded sentence on some forum he'd searched for answers to his problem. Not just this one, but either verbatim or in paraphrase, all other sources hammered the same message. His head sideways and resting on his hand, the other arm ruefully shutting the laptop with several tabs left up in his browser. He had loved writing, but now, he seemed to hate it. The process had become a begrudging assignment rather than a joy, and nothing seemed to come to him; setting, characters, creativity. He felt like it all needed to measure up to something, but nothing he was doing was making the cut. As colorful as his being was, he felt dull and gray.

It was much the same with the evening they were all to share. His family and him about to quest off to the respectable venue to find "their one and only." Initially, the idea made him scoff. But he grew to believe he had little say in the matter socially, and politically. If he didn't choose someone, eventually his family would, or at least hound him until he had a partner. He rolls his eyes at the imaginings of his family trying to set him up with men and women they'd believe were right for him. The Fenghuang allows himself to sigh as a way to exhale his troublesome thoughts outside himself, let them dissipate so he can focus. After all, later this finding a soul mate became, somewhat exciting if not intriguing. The idea is nice to entertain though he still holds much skepticism to it, someone who truly complimented him. And yet destiny felt so opposite of freedom. He looks down at the gift he had planned for the one he'd mark at the masquerade tonight. Was it a gift? Or a chain. He closes the lid of the box shut so as not to look at it anymore while he continues to get ready.

Nearly finished, Xiang presented himself in a mirror before gathering the super family, the family he chose, and driving them in his tour bus to the ball. His suit was black with gilded lines that created patterns of feathers, his mask black and gold as well with feather embellishments sculpted in its material. Originally he had real feathers and a cape of a myriad more of feathers and colors to join his getup, but they'd been retired from the occasion at the last minute. A sense of frustration still lingered around him despite his vigilance in his own demeanor, but the way he walks and talks is nothing short of the Great Gatsby,
"Alright then, let's get this show on the road."

There had been some last minute communications, and he suspects thoughtless decisions, but he hardly cared about how the flock took on their challenge tonight. He was simply content in driving everyone there that needed or appreciated the ride. Xiang parking his bus behind the venue, away from the parking lot where the towns guest would have their cars resting. If there happened to be abductions this evening, his ride was in an advantageous position. But he wouldn't be viewing their finale as abductions, not for the rest of the however many hours they would entertain this party, because otherwise he's not really certain he can move through the night. He had talked it up so much too, to Li Kai, Tanwen, Daniel, Oscar; how they would all go and have fun. If not find someone then enjoy a night with humans, dancing, laughing, and conversating without care that they in being were different. I should really take my own advice.

Originally he planned to do some kind of toast or short and sweet speech to introduce himself, but that kind of flashiness, another last minute alteration, would be scrapped. That's not how he wanted to conduct himself tonight, he'd be no less of a host or pleasant stranger, but spokesman socks were left back home in the dresser. His gaze has no qualms scanning the grow sea of people in suits or dresses, and all in masks. Among them he'd be bale to find his four companions, knowing their attire. He chuckled a little, amused by how he knew Daniel would disdain having to wear a suit. A humorous vision visits where the werewolf rips off his clothes in sweet release from the fabric and his perfect stranger shrieking. Or maybe they'd be into that. Then his mind drifts to Oscar, who arguably would probably handle the goal of tonight's event more poorly than anyone. Speaking of the guppy, he wasn't far from him, watching people on the second floor with him.

Xiang casually strides over, already a glass of champagne held in his hand,
"Well how we doing over here guppy? Don' suppose you've found your fish among the sea."
At this he notices Oscar's finished glass on the railing, all Xiang could think about first was the flute falling onto someone below or shattering on the ground. Xiang snaps his fingers to wordlessly call the nearest waiter over to retrieve it from it's precarious placement. As he leaves he realizes he doesn't have much to genuinely encourage his younger brother, it's situations like this where he found himself so thankful of Li Kai, who would know just what to say. Xiang's flamboyance and eccentric atmosphere didn't always mesh well with the resolute or the uncertain. Tanwen and Oscar were those respectively.
"Oscar I know in your shoes this is most deplorable, I don't think there is anyone here that could make you feel better about it. But try taking it one step at a time and see where it goes. Sometimes the ends justify the means."
Xiang elbows him,
"Besides, you can't take anyone on vacation if you can't find them."

Li Kai
As the oldest in the little family of creatures, Li Kai always felt responsible for the others. Once an older brother, always an older brother. And while he trusted them all with his life and was bonded with them in his own weird way. The masquerade that they were holding put him on edge for many reasons. His biggest concerns however were not about the humans that would be spending that evening with the five of them or the fact that there might be some disappointment involved. Oh no, it was the fact that they were going to be kidnapping some poor unfortunate souls who were destined to be with them. And for Li Kai, this was a huge moral ‘no-no’. The dragon was what some would call a goody-two-shoes and if you lived the kind of life that he did it makes sense. His parents are powerful proctors of order and he was raised to be the same. So the idea of whisking a human away from their perfectly average life to live out a life with him and his family made his gut twist into knots. And he openly expressed his disliking for the whole thing from the very beginning. But his family was not going to make it easy on him.

While some were more excited than others, Tanwen was the one who really wore him down. She had put so much work into coordinating the whole event. Even dragging Oscar into it. He ultimately didn’t want to take this fun away from him. Plus, none of them were children. They all knew how to take care of themselves and how to live with humans. But no matter how much he told himself this he couldn’t help but worry. At one point he even reached out to his parents for advice on what he should do. His parents found his predicament to be a bit humorous since he has always been the one to give advice. They understood his worries. Sympathizing with how he didn’t want to ruin the life of his soulmate. In the end, they told him that it was ultimately up to him. If he did in fact meet his soulmate at this party, would he let them slip through his fingers and continue to live a free life, or would he steal them away from the world. Every time this thought came around he told himself that he would let them go. That he had no right to change someone's life.

He knew deep down that was an empty promise. He truly did not know how he would react to meeting someone who was perfect for him. While he hoped that he would have that strength. He really couldn’t say until that moment came. These were the kinds of thoughts that went through his head whenever he looked at that ring. It was a beautiful ring. It has a silver band that was designed to look like a branch with rubies inlaid in ways to imitate blooming flowers surrounding the center stone. It wasn’t anything special like a diamond, but it was beautiful to him. The center of the ring was a rough rose quartz. Part of the reason he picked it was because rose quartz was supposed to symbolize ‘love and compassion. ‘Rich coming from the man who has to kidnap his soulmate.' The sour thoughts never did anything to improve his mood. But he did his best to keep his eyes on the prize so they say. Li Kai was hoping for one outcome or the other. ‘What will happen, will happen.’ He reassured himself. Content with the little talk he had with himself. Expect this would be a daily accurance for Li Kai as the day of the masquerade drew nearer.

And when that day came Li Kai thought it was a miracle that he hadn’t worn a hole through his palm with how much time had spent rubbing at it. Even in the early hours of the morning, he couldn’t get himself to calm down. He had tried reading his books but ended up rereading the sentence for an hour before he gave up on that. He thought about maybe going out to fly around and get some air. But he also didn’t want to leave in case something popped up that Tanwen or Oscar needed help with. The ring seemed even more ominous now. Even when it was enclosed within the small ring box. It just haunted him more than it had before. Li Kai did his best to keep his feelings under wraps for once. Not wanting to unload his problems onto his family on a day that was supposed to be fun. ‘Maybe I will talk to Xiang later.’ Xiang was the same age as Li Kai and was a bit of a rock for him. Xiang never failed to help him with the others when he needed it and helped ease him whenever he was getting in his head too much. Li Kai always trusts the phoenix to handle things if he needs a moment to collect himself.

‘I think I am going to need that tonight.’ While he wasn’t planning on dipping, parties and glamour were kind of Xiang’s strong suit. That night Li Kai got in his suit and tucked the ring box safely away in this jacket. “What happens, happens." He told himself one last time as he left his room with his mask in hand. A ding from his phone let him know he had been sent a message. He checked the message as he navigated his way through the mansion. It was Tanwen. She had texted him to let him know that she and Oscar had left early to do some last-minute check-ins. Li Kai messaged her back to confirm he got the message and they would meet them at the event. Not long after that Xiang came out from his room and took those remaining at the mansion to the masquerade in his tour van. During the ride there Li Kai pulled out the ring box. Scanning over the piece of jewelry within the small glass box in thought. At this point he has come to terms with what the future may hold, tucking the box back in the jacket as they pulled up behind the event.

Li Kai situated the mask he had chosen on his face before he stepped into the party. Instinctively clocking the location of all the others. It was one of the many times he was grateful for his gifts. He could see Tanwen and Daniel conversing, catching the tail end of Daniel swiping the champagne flute from Tanwen. This managed to make him chuckle. Lifting his spirits some. He could tell even from this distance that Daniel despised his attire for the evening while Tanwen was absolutely glowing. No doubt drawing eyes from some of the attendees. Li Kai lingered on those two for a moment before looking for Oscar. Concerned about the more shy member. When he first found where the siren was he could see that he was alone. And for a moment he thought about going over to check on him. That is when he saw her. He couldn’t see her all that well because of the sea of people around them. He didn’t have to know who she was. Li Kai for a good second just stared at the woman dressed in the short red dress who looked like she was feeling out of place. He had the strongest urge to go over and talk to her. But with his first priority being his family he ignored his heart to once more check on Oscar.

Fate seemed to smile upon him again that night, Xiang was standing with Oscar, and from what he could tell they were happily chatting. Li Kai took that sign to just go talk to the woman in red. Content with how his family was doing he slipped into the crowd and made his way over to where he has last seen the girl in the short red dress. And for a moment he thought he had lost her amongst the crowd when he got there but didn’t see her. A quick scan, however, proved that she hadn’t gone too far from where he had seen her. With a small smile and a breath, he closed the distance between them. “Excuse me, I couldn’t help but notice you seem like you're feeling out of place.” Li Kai almost immediately regretted the words that came out of his mouth. She was not like his family, and it was just basic courtesy not to enter an interaction with something like that. “I’m so sorry about that, let me start over.” He hoped that maybe he could recover from that blunder. “My name is Li Kai Kang and I would love to offer you some company, that is if you want it after what I just pulled.” He smiled at her in a somewhat nervous manner, sticking his hands in his pockets to keep from fiddling with them.

Astrala has a thing about avoiding crowds and this one looked a bit too big.

Taking a deep breath she quietly hummed a soft tune to herself trying to calm her nerves.
Looking around at the beautiful women and handsome gentlemen, Astrala looks down at her own outfit feeling a bit self conscious, deciding she was better off doing what she did best she settled herself at the corner trying to hide herself in the shadows watching the ballroom and it’s beauty, seeing the huge chandelier and the beautiful decorations just trying to take it all in and distract herself.

For some time she just waited there looking for a friendly face, a few guys had come along asking for a dance or having a drink but Astrala denied them all seeing as to she was in no position to move but deciding enough is enough she goes along to the bathroom and redo’s her makeup and her now disappeared lipstick (she just kept chewing her lips) thinking she looked presentable she walked out.
After steadying her movements and breathing she took a deep breath in and decided to get some water as her throat felt the equivalent of the Sahara desert.

Getting a cup of water looked easy but for her even that felt hard, why was she so nervous? Why did she feel something big was gonna happen tonight. Finally with some strength after getting her cup of water she looked back at everyone, getting zoned in a thought, ‘would she fit? or would she make this day a disaster? Should she just lock herself in the bathroom till the whole event’s over? Or should she enjoy?’ Suddenly she stumbles and trips falling into a brick wall….wait a brick wall with arms then she looks up to see the most beautiful and startling pair of brown eyes.

Looking down she notices she spilled her cup on him and he startled jumps back and pushes a table in shock, eyes widening they both see the table fall down on a waiter who in turn trips and falls down with all the tasty treats that could have been in her stomach, there was dead silence and everyone’s eyes were on her.

”so much for avoiding disaster” She mumbles

looking back she looks at the guy, he has a wolf mask on that matches his vibe perfectly, he wore a beautifully designed suit with wavely branches of gold embroidered on one side, shaking herself from her staring trance she walks up to him avoiding eye contact so she doesn’t do do something stupid like scare him away, “I- I’m so sorry” she apologises ”wait let me help u! Its my fault I should have watched where I was going but i didn’t.” she says her words rushed and in panic, looking up at guy again she wonders, who is he? And why is he giving her electrical butterflies……or was that because she just saw a perfectly set of cheesecake go to waste?

Daniel expertly removed Tanwen’s champagne glass from her grasp;
“Shouldn't you be drinking something more age appropriate? Like a Capri Sun or a Danimals of some sort?" She had little doubt that there was a humored smirk under that mask. Daniel chuckled, confirming her knowing of ‘that face’ he makes all too often and redirecting her limited concern of Oscar towards herself.
“Oh, shut it.” She had mumbled under her breath. Everyone in the family was worried about something at any given point; Tonight was amped up to an 11 for most. Tanwen assessed she was sitting at a 4; which wasn’t that bad considering the things that could go wrong. And now she was at a 6.
"So, where is our little dove anyways?" Tanwen instinctively looked over to the balcony, about to point out the area to Daniel and tell him the room when she saw Oscar with Xiang.
“Nevermind. It would seem Big Bird is currently tweeting with him up above. Now, if you’ll excuse yourself so I can get a taste of--”

All at once it was like the room had simultaneously sped up and slowed down. Purple entered the scene. Actually to be frank, a lady with caramel chestnut hair and a purple above the knee dress crashed right into Daniel. And just like the old Looney Tune Cartoons a series of perfectly timed faults continued into an array of a mess.

At first Tanwen was just shocked stiff, trying to grasp the situation. Her hand slowly moved up to cover her mouth as she fought to keep a neutral face. Tanwen’s hand failed her as she began a series of suppressed cracked-up laughter escaping. Trying hard not to make eye contact of the lady or Daniel.

After a good 15 seconds of laughter, she settles herself enough to talk and start getting things in order. Unable to look at the two she directs her voice in their direction;
“My hair dryer is on the-*giggles* the 3rd door to the right. I- I’ve got a table to fix..- If there is any- anything you need help with. Feel free to- to find me.” She fans her face with a hand as she clears her throat and heads over to the waiter and the 3 star Michelin food that was wasted.

The wait staff was already quickly cleaning up and under control which Tanwen felt quite relieved as an event of this scale was quite out of her league. But Tanwen knew the chef probably wasn’t going to be happy with what happened to his food and entered the kitchen.

Inside the kitchen she tried a few of his dishes before apologizing and dealing with a mostly passive chef. He even made a passing remark about her being dressed like a cake, as she fixed her lips in the reflection of the stainless steel walk-in fridge.

In the end, Tanwen returned to the main room- determined to dance and drink at least some champagne and not necessarily in that order.

Walking into the mansion that housed the masquerade party, Leah wasn't sure where to look first. There was so much to look at, so much going on, that for a moment Leah just froze, trying to take it all in. When that proved impossible, she finally moved away from the door. It helped that someone else had come in behind her, and she realized she was blocking the way. Whoops. With a slightly embarrassed apology sent their way, Leah moved further into the room, her eyes wide behind her mask as she looked everywhere, trying to figure out what to do first. Dance? That was out of the question. Socialize? God, not that either.

Leah was actually pretty good at talking to people, but she also got overwhelmed easily. When it came to her siblings, she could talk to anyone to get something done. God forbid something was wrong, Leah could charge in somewhere with her figurative guns blazing, fury in her eyes and anger echoing with every step. But tonight wasn't about her siblings-- it was about her, and that was an area that Leah lacked a little bit in. Her whole life was pretty much designed around taking care of her younger siblings, making sure they were fed and their homework was done before they went to bed. Doing all of those things that their mother would do, if she were there.

Swallowing back the sudden lump that had formed in her throat, Leah blinked a few times to bring herself back to the present. A waiter passed her with a tray of tall stemmed glasses, a shimmery liquid inside of it. Her guess was champagne, and even though the liquid courage might have helped her nerves, the waiter was gone before she could stop him and she was too shy to call out to him. She bit down on her glossed lip as her shoulders slumped a little, the corners of her lips curling down in a small frown. Sighing, she turned her attention back to the crowd on the dance floor, her frown disappearing some as she realized she recognized the song playing. She wasn't sure why that surprised her so much; the vibe of the song really fit the party, but for some reason she'd expected something... classier? Yes, that.

Leah was so distracted by the music and the people dancing that she didn't notice a man approaching her, not until he had closed the distance between them. She jumped slightly when he spoke, whirling to face him as his words registered in her mind. A blush immediately crept onto her cheeks, her lips parting as though she were going to speak, but no words came out. Was it that obvious that she felt she didn't belong here? Oh, god... Before she could think of anything to say, though, he apologized and asked if he could start over. For some reason, that brought a smile to Leah's face, and she nodded a few times. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Li Kai Kang. I'm Leah. Well, Aleigha, but most people just call me Leah. Not that I hate Aleigha, you know, it's just so formal and-"

Realizing it was her turn to make a fool of herself, she snapped her jaw shut, realizing he'd offered her his company. Her blush deepened, but she grew distracted by his somewhat nervous smile as he stuck his hands in his pockets. "That sounds-" She started to say that sounded nice, but a sudden noise from across the way distracted her yet again. Looking past Li Kai, she saw that a girl had seemed to have run into someone else, causing quite a stir in that general direction. "Oh, my goodness." Leah almost took a step in that direction, then remembered Li Kai. Sliding her gaze back to him, she smiled back just as nervously, realizing that this wasn't her home and she didn't have to be mom tonight. "I think your company sounds nice." She finally told him, her smile turning less nervous. "Do you... do you dance?"

As the pair entered the room, it became quite apparent that it was a crowded space. There were already a few couples on the dance floor, twirling to the music that echoed throughout the room. Small groups of people were congregated together, speaking quietly while gentle peals of laughter rose above the murmur of conversations.

Jin raised a brow from behind his mask, intimidated by the masses.

Yawen has no such qualms as she steered him off to the side of the entrance, smiling politely to a few of the other guests she passed. As a waiter swept by, she casually grasped a glass before taking a sip.

"This tastes like money," She joked as she finally came to a pause near an empty corner. Taking another sip of the alcohol, she sent her brother a curious look before she asked, "Do you want something to drink? I could always go looking for more."

Jin rolled his eyes, crossing his arms over his stomach loosely.

"I'm not thirsty. I'm just curious," He spoke, his tone soft.

Yawen raised her brow, twirling the champagne for a moment as she waited for her brother to finish his train of thought.

"I mean—" He turned to her, his arms fanned out as to gesture to the grandness that oozed from every grand inch of the ballroom. "Nothing really interesting happens in our town. Nobody even had fun parties when we were in high school. Why would something like a masquerade happen? It's a little weird, don't you think?"

Yawen stared. And stared some more—before she erupted into giggles.

"You're too paranoid," She laughed off his concern, ignoring his indignant expression as she continued to laugh.

Jin huffed, easily swiping her glass before chugging the rest of the alcohol left. He ignored her whines as he moved to once more lean back against the wall, eyes tracing over the crowd curiously.

There were a few people who caught his eye; but, no one truly had his attention in that moment.

    so much

"this is a dialogue."
Thoughts. If Oscar had something to say in the drawl of his advice, it was lost to the crashing of people and Lizard's laughter. Among the music and symphony of disruption it shouldn't have been so clear to anyone from where he stood, on the opposite side of the ballroom, but that had been a trademark of Tanwen he could never mistake, entirely unique to his younger sister. It wasn't any less clear that Daniel was among the brief commotion, a lady apologizing profusely at their collision and mess of the food and floor. Xiang can't help but wonder if this was a ploy by either party to create an interaction between them, but he doesn't believe Daniel to be the person to think about those kinds of things. If anything he had probably been consumed about wanting to rip off his suit, and now he probably thinks he has a reason to.

With a mental sigh he peels himself away from the bannister, and descends the stairs, as if the scene hadn't even happened. Whether or not they noticed his glances, he had quickly rested one on Tanwen, Daniel, and Li Kai. He found it both alarming and amusing that Li Kai had already taken to talking to someone, and admirable that Tanwen had seemed apt in clearing and cleaning the mess; with the wait staff's skill of course. All this surface tension, he was ready to melt in with the now uneven dance floor. One little spectacle and now no one could sink their attention into the rhythm, really?

Having been next to him, Jin, he had heard his speculation, how it was weird in their no-where town to have something so grand. Could do for being a little more appreciative of it then? He had wanted to say something along that line of thought, but he had swiftly realized he was allowing his nerves and frustrations to tempt him. In the sea of people he was so used to blending in with in such an atmosphere, he actually felt rather lost where he had been confident in navigating. What an ironic and helpful event of a masquerade. A delicate hand taps him on the shoulder, and he turns around. She clearly wants to dance, there were no special fireworks going of in his brain, but he had no other clue as to how find the one besides doing what he would have normally. Dancing being a part of that and finding a bit of cheekiness returning to him, he accepts the wordless offer to woo her and those that might see them dancing. Maybe if Oscar saw him, and even the others, they might feel a bit more comfortable dancing on the floor as well.

The stranger who'd prompted him remained that, a stranger, as there dance finished another asked for a dance, and soon that became an ongoing loop. He didn't necessarily enjoy either participants company more so than another's, but the activity of dancing put him in a mood more comfortable and seamless. Worries welded away behind the flare and fire steadily flickering. This trial blended into nothing more than a vacation for him in these moments, hours? He had lost track of time, lost to the scene like Narcissus to his reflection.

Then the world rippled around him at the glimpse of someone among the near-sardine packed party-goers. Xiang so caught off guard his head would turn in that direction again to relocate whatever had startled his vision. The dance he was having became rigid, until he altogether discontinued it before it even finished. He hadn't meant to be rude, the interest and pull however felt too great that he doesn't realize the marring he causes to his past partner and those eyes that had been on him. They hardly mattered as he still was on investigating what was provoking him.

The woman didn't glow, she didn't enrage hormones, or whatever it was that kids these days like to call it. He was just drawn to her, he didn't know why, and it had him asking all sorts of questions and a willingness to be in her presence. And the amount of immovable force that he was becoming, willing to push people aside to meet her was maybe a little unnerving. People were starting to simply move out of the way before they could even become an obstacle for him.

Her dress was elegant, even if she was not the person of his estranged behavior, it was something he found tasteful and charming of a woman. His mind fired bullets of thoughts on what to say and how he perceived her, something of a study. His being felt like it was on autopilot and yet like he had no control. When he did finally reach her, a hand with a glass that had been sipped from, that regality he found in her, he had no other realm of an idea on what to say besides an invitation. And he should have felt insecure about so brashly parting a valley of people just to speak to her, but a buzzing warm feeling, something light, was all that composed inside of him, a soundless song.
"Would you enjoy a dance with me?"
