I was thinking of recycling an old character of mine. She is a girl possesed by the spirit of a lion, which can take over and make her feral. Kind of a werewolf situation. Would that work?

Okay, so there's no reason for a lion to have unfinished business and be a poltergeist, but she could be cursed or have some sort of ancestral magic situation. Also, how often does it take over? If she risks exposing the community, she will either have to take underground classes or wear some kind of grounding charm.

Yeah, it's a magical situation that runs in her father's side of the family, a familiar of an ancestor that is long dead. The thing is they don't know that.
It only takes over when she is extremely mad, or if it senses she's in mortal danger. Apart from that it enhances her physical abilities.

Okay, so the possession thing still wouldn't work, but if the animal is a familiar, it could potentially share it's power as a spirit, as a form of protection. Depending on the type of magic your character’s ancestor possessed, she would probably be classified as a mage or a magically-attuned human. If she's a mage, she would likely have magic in addition to this, though. Based on what you've said so far, I would guess her ancestor was a magician, which would simply make her magically-attuned due to the familiar's power.
