THE SCHOOL ON THE HILL

latest

Welcome to Solomon Island, Maine, home to 2,000 people who live off of fishing, small business, and the prestigious academy that sits atop Cherry Hill. Oh, and it's also plagued by ghostly fogs at night, howls coming from the mountain and its coal mines, as well as a slew of people who went missing in the twisted forests. That's not even getting into the teenage witches who attend the academy! Oops- did I just say that aloud?

Hello there, ghouls and fans of everything spooky!
This rp is tailored around "The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina," but with quite a few twists and additions. We'll use irl occult concepts (nothing too frightening I assure you) and mix in creatures and magic from your favorite mythologies, games, shows, and so on! Make no mistake, though. Though there is much horror to be had, this is just as much of a wholesome and vivacious setting.
Do you often feel lost in rps? Worry not! This is a coming-of-age story whose journey is structured in a small group adventure. We currently have 4 solid protagonists and at the most, there's room for another 1 or 2. So the Briar Institute of Forgone Arts is accepting new students, but as you can imagine, the standards are stiff. Especially since this is a story and deeply character oriented rp with literate rpers, please slip an example of your writing if you wish to join. It should match the length of my example as a minimum (It doesn't have to match my exact style though, and it can be about whatever you want as long as it's relevant). Other nonessential roles such as adult witches/warlocks, parents, faculty, or townspeople are also welcome and have no limit!

A cool wind slipped through Jenny's hair as she made her way through the winding road home. Kisses of snow settled on her jacket and walnut hair, only to melt at the candle that was her warmth. The trees through shadows against each other, their leaves acting as intangible fingers, but her teeth chattering was the only sound that pierced the night's stormy veil. "You just had to procrastinate that paper for two weeks," she muttered. "I'm the first girl in school history to stay at the library till-"
Suddenly, a shuffle in the thicket. The girl stopped, peering over the nearby bushes and through the trees with her eyebrows lifted. Nothing. After a moment, she pulled up her hood and went on her way. This time, she dared not breathe a single word, and the forest paused as it watched her.
...-
A snag in a nearby branch. . Run. Jenny took off sprinting, unsure if she was just being paranoid but not really caring. One foot propelled her after the next as the winds scratched her face in the bitter cold. Run, run was all she could think.
She looked back. The tip of her shoe caught a crack in the asphalt and Jenny tumbled to the ground.
Blood marked the street with an imperceptible brushstroke, her palm cut open by its sandpaper-like texture. The brunette clenched her jaw for a moment, then released a pained moan. Dirt and flakes of rock had embedded themselves in the wound, but her ears still pounded with the drum of her heart. Once again, she turned to see what was chasing her, or rather, what wasn't. Nothing. It was fine, everything was okay. Milky wisps spilled from her breath in a relieved sigh, her eyes shutting and her chest slowing.
When she opened them again, something stared at her. A tall shadow with twig-like limbs and a waist as narrow as a praying mantis.
Jenny's eyes widened as she shoved off her backpack and let her legs carry her faster than they ever had. Deep crunches surrounded her from the brush on both sides, punctuated by thuds akin to horses' hooves. Her mouth stretched one final time- and a dark shape whisked her away. The echo of her terrified yell was the only hint that Jenny ever existed. Within seconds, that too was gone.
You will learn many items in the Briar Institute of Forgone Arts, including demonology, occultism, chaos magick, curses, and hexes to name a few, but there are three main sources, or "spheres" of energy to draw from. That is not to say that these are the only sources, but they are the most prominent thus far.

Celestial - This sphere refers to the energies of goodness and life that is derived from benevolent gods and spirits, chief among them being Jehovah (at least for the moment). It is best suited for healing, casting out the wicked, preserving life, and destroying evil. Those who devote themselves to this sphere, such as fairies or nymphs, experience tranquility, live longer lives, and retain their beauty long after everything else turns ugly. Since this type of magick relies on calling metaphysical entities for assistance, it will not work for anyone who these entities do not deem worthy.

Hellish - This sphere is one of destruction, mayhem, and evil, led by the Dark Lord Satan and his archdemons. Devotees often lead chaotic and tragic lives, yet are blissfully ignorant due to the manipulation that is inherent with this source. Even if they become aware, their addiction to power usually proves to be a pit they've fallen too deep in and it will override their more sensible judgments. Physically, those who are gifted with Hellish power retain their youth, similar to those in the Celestial sphere, but they will age and rot rapidly when it is taken away. As well, their souls are bound to Hell. However, this type of magick does not necessarily need entities to transmit its energy and there is no predisposed requirement to siphon its power.

Anima - This sphere is the natural one; the universe we live in and is thus the most immediate sphere, everpresent and all around us. It does not favor destruction nor creation, but rather the simple act of being, encompassing concepts such as the astral plane and is the base element for souls. Because of this, it is also the most versatile type of magick but is vulnerable to the flames of the Hellish sphere. While there are many nature-oriented entities that reside here, Gaia is the most accessible and most powerful by sheer proximity. Next would be lesser nature gods, and then entities that Wiccans commonly refer to as "Elementals." It is extremely difficult to invoke the attention of gods and Gaia (unlike archdemons and Satan), so Elementals are the spirits that are most often called upon to make anima work in rituals. Since anima is present in everything though, including living beings, there are an almost unlimited number of ways to draw power from this sphere.

Note: This is not a regular high school theme rp. The school is a backdrop to the personalized story of the protagonists, a rather mature story that branches out far past the Institute; we are not focused on clinging to the childishness of teenage years or the typical cliques, judgmental people, etc. Those things are inherently present as elements of the setting, but understand that it is not the point.

Is it possible to play another character's familiar? I can imagine a lot of story possibilities and character ideas with that.

Here's my writing sample. It's not anything I'd specifically be doing, but I felt it fit the setting you've got here:

"When I said it was dangerous I rather thought you'd know running was involv-aachoo!"
Athan sneezed as Agatha's hair flew into his face as she ran down the path, cutting off his excuses. From his perch on her shoulder he scrambled to try to get it out of his face. While the fruity scent of her shampoo was a welcome alternative to the rotten-meat and stale death stench of the beast chasing after them, her 'billowing locks' (he needed to get her to get her some proper reading material if only to stop her trying out phrases from the trashy romance novels she insisted on polluting her mind with) blinded him and made him want to sneeze. Finally managing to get to her opposite shoulder, Athan repositioned himself so he could get a good look at what was chasing them.

Ah Icebergs, his Witch had really gone and done it to herself now (even if Athan had told her how to access the Byways he wasn't taking responsibility for this mess). He'd hoped he was just imaging the burbling, but there was no mistaken the creature behind them. From the tip of its lashing tail to the fang-filled maw below eyes that popped several inches out of their sockets there was no mistaking a Jabberwocky. Combat was simply not an option without a vorpal blade (not that Athan thought Agatha would be able to lift a sword, let alone wield one), so their only hope for escape lay in getting back to the portal that was currently being guarded by the JubJub Birds they'd been running from when they came across the Jabberwocky. They were stuck between a rock and a hard place, but that hardly seemed an active enough metaphor for the danger they were in.

Athan snapped out of his peril-filled reverie to the peril-filled reality he was facing. He still needed Agatha (and didn't stand a chance of escaping without her anyway), so it was time for this familiar to offer his Witch some advice. Shouting to ensure she could hear him, he instructed her to make use of their remaining Drink Me potion as soon as she saw the JubJub Birds. Give or take several swear words. Finally taking his advice (and the potion) in full, Agatha found herself greatly diminished when the Jabberwocky finally got close enough to lunge at her, although it was in height rather than body mass to her and her familiar's great relief. Finding its jaws chomping on nothing but air, the Jabberwocky's rotating eyes landed upon the JubJub Birds. Since its mind relied more on equals signs (= food, = not food, = danger (the last being the rarest and likely last = a Jabberwocky found in its mind)) than actual conscious thought, it immediately set upon its new prey.

A flock of JubJub Birds were more than a match for a Human with their razor talons and beaks that could snap bone like twigs, but faced with a beast only vulnerable to death when decapitated with a very specific blade they quickly found themselves as the eaten rather than the eater. Athan snatched his now-tiny Witch and scrambled with her in one claw and her now much too large clothing in the other before launching himself towards the portal with all the speed he could muster. The rainbow grasses of this patch of the Byways sped by but it still seemed too slow as brown and tan JubJub Bird feathers soaked in the birds' foul-smelling bluish blood fell around them. The Jabberwocky seemed to be making short work of the meal they had led it to and if they didn't get through the portal now they'd be its next meal.

Oh yes! We'd love to have you come on as a familiar! We were actually going to play as each other's familiars but this is 10x better! I'll pm you with our characters so you can take a look and see who you'd best fit ^-^

How do familiars work in world of your RP?
Essentially the same way as the show, but there are a number of shapeshifting creatures that could be familiars. They, or even spirits and demons given flesh can be bound in servitude to their masters, though forceful servitude almost never ends well. Goblins are still the most popular creatures to be familiars due to their variation, versatility, and unmatched loyalty even if they're not as powerful as other entities.

Is it okay if I submit my writing sample by PM? It's a major surprise for an RP I'm GMing, and I've already seen one of my players here.

I will need some time to write a sample since I got extra work today and probably wont have much time to do that.

Phew, that's a laborious read, it's also harder to read due to the Snow gif partially triggering my epilepsy(dont worry I didnt seize). It's still unclear what our job as creators and players would be. It's definitely a fun looking idea though.

Oops, sorry about that. But basically, it's got the structure of a tabletop or RPG where there's a definite campaign / story but your character development is wholly your own (powers, relationships, etc). Parts of the story will change with your decisions, but this isn't a sandbox where you're dropped into the world and are expected to make your own plot from the ground up. I don't like aimless rps where players can fall through the cracks because they don't get interaction, or where everyone knows the plot twists so far ahead of time that it makes everything pointless

I sent you my writing sample, if there are spots available.

Oh, are there any familiar roles still open?
Think this setting could do with some more wisecrackin‘ ghoulies.
