Help Sub-genres vs. tags

Ayama

Enthusiast
I feel like I've already asked about this but, for some reason, it is just not clear to me, and I can't seem to find information on it (though it's entirely possible that's because I haven't been looking in the right place xD ). But anyway, I would like to know: what, exactly, is the difference between sub-genres and tags? Because to me they seem sort of like the same thing, so I don't understand why we need both ._.

It's part of the way the filter system works. See, there's three tiers of things you can search by, and they get progressively more specific as you move down:
Prefix > Sub-genre > Tag

Subgenres are meant as more of a type (but more specific than the prefixes, which are intended to represent general settings), while tags are just to include all kinds of things that might also be in the RP, or to indicate whether an RP is closed, open, or accepting new people.

You can find the full list of sub-genres and tags here, which might help illustrate what I'm saying. ^3^

It's usually Fyuri who updates it, and she's been under the weather for a bit. Also, not all of the suggestions make it onto the final list, for various reasons.

-nods- I guess I was just wondering 'cause my HP RP has the HP sub-genre attached to it, even though I'm pretty sure it belongs in the tag category, and on that list it's neither a sub-genre nor a tag, so it made the whole thing seem fairly arbitrary ^^"

Ah. Yeah, some of the larger thingys were put as sub-genres instead due to the amount of interest they generate. And HP could be seen as a sub-genre of fantasy or realistic/modern (depends on where your setting is focused), with the number of RPs we get for it.

So are they tailored by specificity or popularity? 'cause HP being a sub-genre while mafia remains a tag seems to attest to the latter xD

Both, really. It does seem a bit subjective, now that I think about it, but we do what we can ^;3^ It's intended to represent specificity,. And then, what with some being focused around Hogwarts, some around the wizarding war, some around wizard life in general, and the different time periods, we felt it was worth moving it up to the larger slot.

We do try to avoid that at least. ^;3^ Every so often we take a look at what's out there and see if we need to reevaluate things.

Ayama Ayama I'm trying to catch up on all my alerts (been sick so a large amount so go through). In response to why something like HP gets a sub-genre and others don't. It's determined by quantity of roleplays. Basically, if a specific fandom is very popular among the users of the site it has a higher chance of being a sub-genre. We look at things like longevity of the interest. For another example, Star Wars. Star Wars has been popular since the first movie was released (1970's) and it's been decades and it's still highly roleplayed. On the opposite end, while Star Trek is the 'competition' in interest usually, here Star Trek hasn't been requests for a sub-genre and it's not something largely roleplayed compared to Star Wars.

It's not favoritism from Staff, it's more popularity generated by users much like Google analytics for popular search terms. If someone suggests a specific fandom I take a look at the number and frequency of threads for it. If it's only around 25 threads since 2015, it's not something with a large enough interest to become a sub-genre. Sub-genres we want to keep limited because that list would get crazy large otherwise.

Makes sense, though I feel like that makes things more confusing than if it were just by narrowing specificity, as Kaerri had first said ouo
