Sommerset University
Founded in 1856, Sommerset University is located in upstate New York near the border of Canada. It is located approximately twenty-five miles from the town of Sommerset, New York. Originally Sommerset College for Men the University did not admit women up until the turn of the twentieth century, where it opened a different wing of the campus for its prospective female students. In 1912 the University merged its Men's and Women's campuses into one.
The University is a prestigious one that ranks nationally among the best schools in the nation. Its acceptance rate is just shy of 8%. The University bolsters one of the most acclaimed schools in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Beginning in the late 1950s the University became known for the movements in Art that came from its students in the written word and film sector. To this day the most common majors chosen by attending students are Psychology, Criminal Justice, Art, Film, and Creative Writing.
In the 1950s the University's campus was host to a series of grisly murders which took place over the span of three nights wherein seven students were murdered and two were injured. These events are commemorated in the center of the University's campus with a memorial statue dedicated to those lost in the killing spree. Since the 1960's the University has become an epicenter for social change and has held numerous demonstrations for the advancements of civil rights as well as the women's liberation movement, the fight for gay rights, and the legalization of recreational drugs.
Sommerset Massacre
The Sommerset Student Massacre, also known as the Sommerset Killings were a series of murders that took place over the course of three nights in May of 1955. The perpetrator of the massacre, John Lee Watson claimed he vented his frustrations of being rejected from the university by killing its students. It’s unknown what relation Watson had to any of his victims if any.
The known victims are as follows:
- Warren Sanders
- Penny Cooley
- Norma Dickenson
- Marlene Haney
- Susan Brown
- Leonard Travis
- Dane Wright
Warren and Penny were a couple at the time of their demise and were found shot to death in their car on the main road into campus from Sommerset. They’d been shot shortly before Midnight and were found around one in the morning.
Norma and Marlene were members of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and were staying in the sororities house studying for finals week while their sister went out and partied. A little past 11 pm Watson entered the house and stabbed the two young women to death. Each victim in the sigma house was stabbed approximately seventeen times. Hearing the commotion from the neighboring Kappa Tau Kappa sorority house, Susan Brown knocked on the door to see that everything was alright. She too was stabbed to death.
Leonard Travis and Dane Wright were roommates who lived in the Stone Wall dormitories on campus. After finishing their study session at the library the two planned to walk together back to their room. However midway through their journey, they were stopped by Watson who’d posed as a campus security guard. Watson offered to drive the two men back to the dormitory and they obliged. Once the two were in the car, Watson drove Leonard and Dane to a quarry off campus where he proceeded to shoot one and stab the other to death.
There was only one survivor of the killing spree. An unnamed female victim successfully managed to outrun Watson after he attacked her on campus grounds. She successfully managed to flags down a police car, prompting the manhunt for Watson.
The manhunt that night after a police shootout in the same quarry that Watson killed Leonard and Dane in. Watson was shot, then took his life by throwing himself down a mineshaft. His body was never officially recovered but the mineshaft was sealed up and by all official accounts there’s no way he could have survived the nearly 100-foot drop.
Since the massacre, the University has done little to remember the killings. Public knowledge of the massacre has all but faded, and the only reference to the murders is a statue in the middle of campus with the names of those killed etched into plaques surrounding it. As time passes, their names fade more and more every year, as does the memory of the massacre. Now the incident only exists through urban legends and scary stories passed around by those on the university’s campus.
Sommerset University Student Murdered
21-Year-old Kimberley Whitmore, a student at Sommerset University and member of the Tau Kappa Kappa Sorority, was murdered sometime after midnight, say officials. Whitmore was found by her sorority sisters shortly after 2 A.M. this morning. The Somerset Sheriff's Department has chosen to withhold most details - though they are confirming that this is in fact related to the notes mailed to them, the Sommerset Chronicle, as well as a member of Sommerset University' board of education. This comes after the death of another female student in the university's dorms two weeks ago - though this has officially been ruled as a suicide. Despite this many, including those close to the student who passed two weeks ago, believe that the instances may be more closely linked than the university cares to admit.
Details surrounding Whitmore's murder are being kept under Police discretion, however, details leaked by an anonymous source claim that writing in blood threatens more violence on the campus. The same source claimed that Whitmore may have been stabbed anywhere between fifteen and twenty times. When pressed for an official statement - Dean Kipliff's office stated that he'll be addressing the campus later today in a joint press conference with Chief Williams of the Somerset County Sheriff's Office. Kipliff's office did state however that there's no reason to believe that this is anything more than an isolated incident and will not likely alter the school's final schedule. They wanted to remind students that grief counseling will be available at the student health and wellness center and are asking anyone with pertinent information to step forward now.
