Soft Apocalypse
Hey all, I thought I'd share my thoughts and journey of being a graphics artist and suffering from tendinitis. I'm sure a lot of artists in this community have had their shared struggle of developing pain in their arm/hand/wrist after years of drawing. Overtime if it's not managed, it can be hindering to work with forcing you to stop what you're doing altogether and recover which can take months if severe. For me, I started out designing posters and T-shirts for events, clubs, and projects. Most of it involved pulling together stock photos and playing around in photoshop. Here are some examples of projects I would do:
It wasn't until after I graduated high school that I started to get into illustration. I then realized I wasn't able to hold a stylus for more than 30 min without intense burning pain shooting up my arm and wrist. I suffered from tendinitis in the past due to my years in tennis but didn't realize it would affect drawing as much as it did. It discouraged me from going into art or drawing my first 2 years at uni. But I wasn't happy with what I was majoring in at the time and knew that digital art was more than work, it was a passion.
I eventually bit the bullet and switched my major to Digital Arts. I struggled a lot in the traditional drawing classes as I would spend a lot of the studio hours recovering every half hour cause of my wrist pains. It caused me to fall behind and produce work at a much slower rate. I tried alternatives like wrist braces and even carrying Icy Hot with me to class but none of it worked. I kept thinking to myself whether my time was being wasted but fortunately didn't give up. Cut to this past year, over the summer I discovered that by using the shape & pen tool in adobe illustrator, it made things a lot easier on my wrist by using the mouse + I was able to illustrate!
I found what worked for my situation and it enabled me to continue doing what I love. I'm going into 2D animation and illustration nowadays and still have a ways to go but thought I would post my journey here for the heck of it. And if you're someone that is suffering from tendinitis or wrist pain I hope this method can also serve as an alternative for you as well. Thank you
