The year is 1980, the introduction of a new decade full of great victories and losses. A wave of new and improved technology is released, iconic video games created, and, most importantly, rising tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union as the Cold War continues to stretch on. What appears to be a never-ending conflict between the two powerful nations only grows worse as they clash through sports, politics, and international affairs. The United States government pushes to make preparations in case of all out war against the Soviet Union, going so far as to increasing their military power and intelligence agencies. However, it is never enough to quell the fear of invasion. It only gets stronger like a virus that has taken complete control over its host.
Desperate measures must be made. A weapon is needed to subdue the enemy if it ever gets to such a scenario. But it cannot not be just any weapon. Everyone knows that the best way to overcome an enemy is to get into their minds.
A series of laboratories were created back in the late 40s, not long after the Second World War, funded by both the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA). The purpose of their existence is to create such a weapon. But what can those weapons be exactly? The answer is humans that are able to "expand the boundaries of the mind". In other words, obtain psychic abilities. These abilities will allow the United States to gain an upper hand in warfare all while remaining in the comfort of their own lands. They will be able to gain intelligence without sending out spies and take out figures that pose a threat without sacrificing a number of their men. The possibilities are endless.
But the question that now remains is: how does one achieve such a feat? What is needed to "expand the boundaries of the mind". The laboratories have spent the last two decades trying to figure that out, but to not much success. Only a small lab in a small town in rural Indiana called Hawkins was able to make some strides. The MKUltra Project had brought to them bizarre discoveries with great potential. There is still a long way to go with comprehending these findings but it is certain it could be one of two things. This could be the salvation they have been looking for, or the cause of their downfall.

Hawkins is gaining attention from the United States government due to their recent discovery of humans with various psychic abilities. Some of them were a product of the ones involved in the MKUltra Project, while others remain to be unexplained phenomenon. Regardless of the reason for having acquire such powers, they have great potential of becoming the very weapons that are needed to fight against the Soviet Union. The only problem that poses a threat is keeping these experiments under control. These beings contain great power that can be both beneficial and disastrous. Anyone they turn against would be at a great disadvantage and the odds defeating them are very slim.
So how does the head of the Hawkins National Laboratory keep them in check? The answer is by completely restricting access to the outside world. All of the test subjects have been there since infancy and know nothing else except what the lab tells and teaches them. This has made it much easier to control them as they continue to harness their skills for their future use by the government. These beings have no idea of where they are and what is out there beyond the security fences of the lab. And that was fine...for a while.
Something else has caught the attention of the scientists in the lab. An abnormal electrical discharge keeps being detected without much explanation as to why. These discharges have caused either power outages or surges across parts of Hawkins. Since the lab is known as a base for the US Department of Energy to ensure their cover-up, they are also charged with looking into these strange occurrences.
The head of the lab saw this as a perfect opportunity to try out his experiments to see if they are going in the right direction. He had some of his subjects use their abilities to search for the cause. Little did he know the devastation it would bring upon them. Contact was made but it quickly turned deadly as the subjects lost control and were psychically attacked by whatever they were interacting with. Not much could be done as one by one each subject lost their lives, their brains and eyes imploding from the stress of the contact. Before anything can be done, an inexplicable opening was made. No one knew where it led to for it only showed darkness.

Telepathy: Users are primarily able to transmit information from one person to another through mental means. However, many other mind-based abilities fall under telepathy due to those powers overlapping with the core concept of telepathy. Some of the more common abilities also considered telepathy would be reading the thoughts of others at will and detecting the presences of other minds through extrasensory means. More advanced users can completely control the minds of their targets and manipulate their thoughts and emotions at will. Potentially, they even control Psychic energy from their telepathic abilities, strengthening their previous powers and maybe even gaining new ones.

Psionic Inundation: The user can project harmful psionic volleys, which may result in brain damage, memory loss, unconsciousness, vegetative state and/or death. The victim is not physically harmed, but damages the internal mentality of a target.

Illusion Manipulation: Users can create, shape and manipulate illusions/hallucinations, causing targets to see, hear, touch, smell, and/or taste things which do not actually exist or cause them to perceive things differently from what they truly are. While some users may only be able to alter the way they or the target is perceived, others can create complex and detailed images and worlds, place a target within simulated conditions and circumstances and accurately replicate a wide variety of different phenomenon and other effects. As such, illusions can either exist solely within the physical or mental perceptions of usually organic and sentient targets, or as external projections capable of occupying material space, like holograms and mirages. Additionally, these illusions can even be powerful and realistic enough to become tangibly solid and physically interact with the target, their environment or, in extreme cases, affect reality itself.

Psychic Communication: The user is able to open a psionic communication line with another being, rendering them capable of having conversations with others using their minds. The user is able to open up channels of communications with others who may be incapable of physical speech by linking their minds. Notably, this power is more narrow in scope than telepathy in that it only allows for communication. The user is typically not able to read the target's mind and only hear the thoughts that the target wishes to convey back to the user.

Mind Control: The user can control the minds of others, including their thoughts, perceptions, memories, emotions and personality. Depending on the user's skill and power, this can range from a trance-like state very similar to hypnosis, to the target being completely subject to the user's control. A skilled user may be able to control the minds of multiple people simultaneously. The target(s) can be placed in a semi-conscious state, where they may have no recollection of any actions that they perform while under the user's control; and whilst enthralled, the recipients may display capacities that they would otherwise not be capable of in their normal state.

Clairvoyance: Users can acquire information using sight outside the normal range of detection about an object, person, location, or physical event. Usually, they can also do so without the aid of their vision, allowing them to act when they are unable to use their eyes. Users would be able to detect beings/entities normally completely undetectable, like spiritual and psychic beings. Additionally, they can perceive sights and visual sensations from other dimensions and from past events, future events, or locations that are currently outside the range of normal human senses or vision. This also means that they can receive optical/visual sensations (i.e. itchy eyes, crying/watery eyes, rolling eyes, sharper vision, rapid blinking, blurry vision, blindness) from things outside the normal range of perception.

Astral Projection: User can project/separate their consciousness/presence/spirit, alternatively known as their astral form, from their material bodies, allowing for perception, interaction and travel independent of physical limitation. This state is usually achieved through entering a trance (via lucid dreaming or deep meditation), with the user gaining access or influence over the Mental and Astral Planes, as well as potentially other planes of existence, which can extend so enough as to allow the user to move and exist outside the limits of space and time using their astral form. Experienced individuals may be able to control both their astral and corporeal presences, allowing them to extend and project their astral selves without having to lose consciousness in their physical forms, as well as separate others from their physical forms to either to travel alongside them or to imprison them in an incorporeal state. Telepaths often astral project by projecting their minds as well as that of others.

Psychokinesis: The psychic ability to manipulate or otherwise interact with matter with mental effort alone. As the ability is tied directly to the mind, it can be activated and controlled through conscious effort and concentration, through willpower and emotion of a particular level of intensity, or through achieving a state of discipline and serenity. In some cases, the ability can respond to the user’s thoughts and ideas, imagination, desires or belief in their abilities, something that could make the power harder or easier to activate, and in these cases, it is often more challenging to control. Moreover, these aspects of the user's mind and mental capacity can potentially affect the accuracy, precision, range, and strength of their ability and the subsequent limitations of its intuitiveness, usability, and reliability in different situations.

Mind Exchange: User can take over the mind of another, this does not accompany the target taking the body of the user. Some users have changed so many times that they no longer know which body is their own. Some users can inhabit more than one mind at a time, producing a Hive Mind.

Precognitive Telepathy: The user can foretell future events and observe what might happen by scanning the thoughts and memories of individuals in the future. How much the user will see is determined by the users ability to focus on precise thought waves.

Psionic Intuition: User can sense when something is about to happen, before it does or have knowledge of any given subject through paranormal means or actions. This allows the user to sense and predict attacks and enables them to act as needed to defend themselves/others.

one.This thread follows the story of the surviving test subjects in the Hawkins National Laboratory. They consist of twelve children between the ages of 12-15. Each child has their own unique psychic ability and are being trained to one day be used by the US government against their foreign enemies. However, their training takes a slight turn after a fatal discovery of what appears to be a gate for a dark alternate dimension.
Each user will be allowed to play up to one test subject. Exceptions will be made once everyone has claimed a role and there are still some remaining. The powers assigned to the role are the only ones that character is allowed to have. If you have any questions about the ability and its range, please feel free to reach out to one of us for further clarification. Roles may be reserved (but only on the sign-up thread since this is an interest check).
This thread will eventually take place outside the lab, and for that case every user is allowed to make as many characters as they wish to have outside of the roles listed. However, these characters will not be allowed to have psychic abilities since those are only reserved to the test subjects.
two.A Discord server will be created for all plotting and character development. Please be respectful to one another and do not exclude others when plotting. If anyone expresses any rude and/or toxic behavior, they will immediately be kicked out.
When discussing heavy topics that could potentially be triggering for other, please provide a warning in advance. We want to make this space as safe and inviting as possible, so please be mindful of others. And most importantly, have fun!
three.This will be a semi-advanced to an advanced thread, so each post must fit around that criteria (about 2-3 paragraphs). Please feel free to alert us if you have low muse or need more time to work on your responses. We are completely understanding and know you all have lives outside this thread as well as other threads to respond to. There is no definite time limit on when to respond and we will not hound for one.
Please restrain from any power-playing unless you have permission from the other user. When introducing a major plotline, please make sure to run it by the rest of the group before putting into play. That way everyone is aware of what is going on and no one is lost.
