Chapter One: Prologue
The body lay still, bleeding heavily from that gunshot wound. He left me with no choice but to shoot him, although I took great care with my trigger finger, as I shot him once, for I only intended to incapacitate him. The cloudless, sunny weather and quirky ambience of the forest failed to ease the tension that flew in the air. I remained still as beads of sweat steadily poured down my face, my heartbeat racing with excitement, and not of the good kind. After observing the body for a while, I approached it with caution, before proceeding to check his pulse. It didn't take any time for me to realize that I had killed him. As short as our meeting was, I was still unable to comprehend my action, and because of this, it was infinitely stunning to me, I had never killed a being in my entire life, let alone, even think about it. I quickly rushed to his aid, yet I found myself suddenly repelling away from him, despite my best wishes. He would've done the same. These were the thoughts that ran through my mind at that precise moment. It was wholly true that I had turned remorseless, but then again, it's also true that he too, would've done the same exact thing, except, even more coldly, perhaps even caring enough to finish me. Fearing for my life, I proceeded to rush away from the gruesome scene, it's something that I won't forget. Anyway, I quickly moved away, lest all the other monkeys soon follow suit of the now dead monkey's hopeless cries. However, I quickly remembered that these weren't, as far as I had studied, normal monkeys. They were intelligent, bloodthirsty primates. And they had a rather abnormally sharp sense of hearing. Before I could react properly, various sounds of bushes rustling and branches crackling emanated from the forest lines, interrupting my thoughts. Before anything more could happen, abysmal howls flooded through the ambience, which attacked me with a fear I never experienced. I immediately realized that I was going to meet my demise, if I were to act slow.
