  Born into Lois and David Tomslin's household, Joan is an only child. So when she was young, one of her sources of entertainment was her friends. The Tomslins lived in a quiet, tight-knit neighborhood. Almost all the children were around the same age. With children of close age, everyone grew close and somewhat of a hierarchy under age. Joan ended up as second-in-command to the "gang" of the neighborhood. (The children liked to see themselves as cool kids and gangsters so they always called the group, the "gang.") The leader position was bestowed upon a boy named Jeremy, who was two years older than Joan.
  
  Jeremy and Joan didn't see each other as comrades at the start. In fact their first greeting consisted of Jeremy staring straight at Joan and calling her ugly. From there they became rivals for years despite the unsaid positions they held in the eyes of others. It wasn't until an incident where the two had ventured off too far past the city grounds ,on the conditions of a dare, that a wild Elistrik was being provoked by a smaller Elistrik that the bigger Elistrik turned its attention and anger towards Jeremy and Joan. That memory is hazy to Joan today except for the detail that Jeremy jumped in front of her to capture the furious Elistirk's attention and leave it only on him. The situation could have turned out worse if an Elistrik Catcher had not stepped in. Everything else that happened afterwards didn't stay in Joan's memories.
  
  After the scare Jeremy and Joan became the best of friends. The relationship soon even developed into something greater than mere acquaintances, at least in Joan's eyes. But their relationship never moved further from that of being friends, not because Jeremy didn't reciprocate her feelings rather a truth was revealed.
  
  It was during one of the busiest Elistrik storm seasons when it showed itself, that Joan could absorb the energy from the storms. Joan was twelve when it happened. Jeremy and Joan were heading home one evening after a tour of a nearby sanctuary. Their other friends went home earlier that day due to the repeated warnings of high activity for the storms that day. Jeremy and Joan were young and reckless, which meant they ignored the warnings. So when it came time to return home, the two were in the midst of the worst phase of the storm. The revelation happened in a flash. A crack, a shout, and a sudden cry out. On the ground sat Jeremy stunned, he never got a word out to say anything to Joan since she ran off. Joan and her parents were aware of the reputational consequences if anyone found out, so they chose the only option available to them, to move.
  
  The Tomslins were quick to move, leaving without even saying a goodbye to any soul. The family moved to a town the farthest possible they could financially manage. With a new start, Joan and her parents decided to pursue a rescue facility, or a sanctuary, for Elistriks.
