The Races

Werewolves:
Generally werewolves are said to have been the result of a witch in the 6th century cursing a family's bloodline, turning them into werewolves at the occurence of a full moon, over the centuries they have figured out how to transform without the use of a moon.
Werewolves look exactly what you think they do when transformed, and look human when not. They are generally known for their strength and ferocity. Are generally fast and resilient to pain or damage. For the war, they generally are used as infantry soldiers. As they pretty much aren't very well equipped for magic or technology.
They are a prime standing race in society and have been for centuries, everyone knows werewolves and they even have some of their kind in positions of power.
They generally have had a rivalry against vampires for centuries due to both being some of the earliest supernatural races to exist.

Vampires:
Unlike werewolves, nobody knows when or where they started to appear. They have been a race shrouded in mystery due to them preferring the night. A witchdoctor vampire in the 12th century however proved to the supernaturals that they weren't harmed by sunlight, they simply preferred the night. Perhaps it was easier to hunt humans back in the middle ages during the night. Or perhaps they just hate the day.
Vampires are charactized by pale skin and sharp fangs, possessing superhuman capabilities of strength speed and durability, although are allergic to garlic and can be killed instantly by being staked in the heart, although in my opinion, everyone dies if they get impaled in the heart.
Vampires are also a primestanding race in society, workers, soldiers, or any job that can benefit from superhuman qualities with the adeptness of the human physique. Some say that they have a league in the shadows of spies and assassins but nobody cannot prove the existence. I belief this is much the case and certain fees or bribes are paid to keep this from the spotlight.

Fae:
Fairies. That's exactly what it sounds like. Faeries can come up in all sizes, but they are very apparent when you see one, they possess glittery skin of varying colors and pointed ears and most of all wings. Faeries came from another dimension, or so they claim, when they were forced to leave their own by an invading race, but that kinda makes them invaders themselves. Ugh. Hypocritical much?
They are very intelligent and they possess magic, something that some other races do not. So some like to hate on them but they're also generally weaker physically than even humans.
They've been apart of the world for centuries, earlier reports place them appearing in the renaissance. Perhaps that's actually what caused the renaissance, i mean, they clearly are expert craftsmen and intelligent, they probably brought their inventions and ideas from their world. But that's my theory.

Humans:
Yes. The Original Race. They've been around for maybe 100,000 year, evolved right here on our planet naturally. Or scientists and historians say. But who knows maybe even they were the result of something or came from somewhere. Although no evidence suggests this.
They're humans, what more can I say, they are of average physical capability but damn do they do shit when they have to, they invented many incredible things over the years. The wheel, pyramids, castles. Many things before the supernaturals came. Some humans have somehow figured out how to do magic, potentially making them a very dangerous race potentially due to their strong willpower and impatience for getting things done, a dangerous combination.

It's beginning to get more common and it's very much a mystery how it was achieved. They call themselves wizards or witches, few appeared in past centuries, the old ages through the middle ages, but there is a bigger rising community now.
Some used to think humans weren't good for much but even back when they didn't possess magic they were some of the most creative builders and inventors with some of their feats even surpassing the Fae. Think pyramids, castles, the invention of the wheel itself. Most of what was invented before the Renaissance was due to humans, largely them being the most common race, although populations have sorta evened out now. And they even have some inventions past the renaissance that are still quite impressive.

Merfolk:
They're generally tall, but not giants, and they have good eyesight and defined bodies from adapting to the sea, quite in shape. They worship the All saint, their so called God. They came from the sea and have been known for very peculiar abilities, charming their foes, some kind of radar they claim to have and they seem to have it, although the specifics of how it works is a guarded secret.
Some say they're their own race while others speculate they are related to humans who were forced to retreat to islands and eventually became sea folk. I'm not sure myself but there are some similarities.
They are the another prime standing race in society. I think they kinda have been apart of the world for as long as anyone can remember, some historians found records of cavemen or natives trading with folk who came from the water. Depictions of interaction between humans and merfolk. A good unity that seems to have placed modern relations quite well.

The War
This is the most abominable war anyone has ever seen. Dear Lord. I've never seen any war create and commit as much atrocities as this one. Blimps using flying beasts and Warplanes duking it out.
People riding mythical beasts and automatons. Explosions of bombs and Magical Spells.
This is the most atrocious thing I've witnessed. The sides are simply. If you believe that science is better than magic, you're a Teslanians. They believe that everyone is equal under science, which is bullshit but whatever. They propose their clockwork gear and automatons, flying planes, bombs, and mechanical inventions.
If you think that magic is better, then you're a Darwinist, a product of evolution, a focus on the study of magical beasts, preservation of magic and the natural world, and as they claim "none of these atrocious inventions that will be the end of us"
Also bullshit but again, whatever.
If you're a equalist trying to bridge the sides, give up, the different countries are already too far involved, you're preaching on dead ears I'm afraid.
Oh right the countries, well it's abit of a mess.
Spain, United States, Canada, India, Britain and a few others are Darwinists,
While Germany, Russia, Italy, Japan and their allies are Teslanians.

The Technology and Magic of the World.
While not everyone is capable of using all the diferent kinds of magic that however doesn't mean that magic is completely unusable by that individual , spell scrolls and spell sigils are basically stored spells that can be kept for a limited amount of time before they must be used, the creation must be done by a Fae or a Human possessing magic, one who is quite skilled at creating scrolls or sigils. These spells when used will unleash a limited power version of the intended spells.
However since these can be mass produced, the Darwinist use these as common supply for the war.
Magic generally falls under the 8 catagories
Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Energy, Light, Darkness, Ice.
There is a 9th element of Psychic but it's a very hard to define catagorie that basically defines anything that is otherwise non applicable to the 8 schools.

Fire, as obvious as it sounds, is anything that pertains to fire, or heat, closely related to energy and as far from Water and Ice as it can be, invokes anger, destruction, aggression but that does not mean that all pyromancers are blindly enraged. General use from heating homes, powering engines, to explosives, to powering trains, whatever you need fire for.

Water, an essential element to life but also a powerful source of power and energy, You should use water for everything from cleaning your homes and clothes, to powering steam machines or cooking.

Wind, wind is also a good source of energy, it has some application in household machinery but is a much bigger source of travel, many mythical beasts that fly or move quickly generally have abit of wind magic.

Earth, this is incredibly useful for farming and building, Agriculture uses much of this. But this also has it's own hand in destructive spells. Just as earth is seen as a useful magic, it is also quite a wild and unpredictable magic in destruction.

Energy: This is a source of power for machinery almost excusively, most if not all clockwork use abit of energy magic, this can be useful for powering cities too.

Light: Light is abit of a loose term, for it also pertains to healing magic, life magic and holy magic, as well as light magic itself, it's somewhat related to energy and fire magic but it's it's own category

Darkness: Darkness magic is the opposite of life magic, cursed magic, death magic and destruction magic are common within this and it's generally used by experimental witchdoctors or as a means of destructive war.

Ice: Ice magic is useful for keeping things cold, generally not the most often practical magic but it certainly has it's uses.

Psychic generally falls under anything else. You know. Anything that doesn't fit in the 8 categories.

Technology
The world uses alot of steampunk technology
From automatons, to house appliances to machinery in watches
(This is a steampunk world, there are no computers or modern devices, many people rely on industrial like steampunk technology which is deeply ingrained in the world, however the most modern invention is fighter planes and tanks, but everything else is very much 1800sesque. I'll allow some discussion and leeway for how technology is ingrained in society and what is included and not included)

The clothes: People traditionally wear dresses and suits, the rich adorn their clothes with gadgetry and cogs, some middle class do aswell. Regardless it's all rather amazing to look at if you ask me.

Lower Class: (Pictures are for visualization)

It's probably weird I started journaling everything but I just think somebody ought to get a good view of the world incase it goes to smithereens.
You're probably wondering who I am by now. I'm Victoria Swan, I attend Masquerade Military School. It's a emergency school for the war effort, we generally operate in rescue missions or supply drops, although we're currently neutral. We haven't officially taken a side. I live in a big city. Which makes it even more surprisingly we're neutral. This is Marseille France, we're a neutral country actually, although wind of our prime minister has been taking that he may choose a side and soon, to prevent the consequences of being involved but neutral. This is a wellit city
Steampunk market.jpg

From the corners of the illustrious city to the crowded marketplace, I call this place home, but honestly what is home, I've been wanting to get out of this place for ages

Our school uniform is pretty practical. It's buit for combat situations but ofcourse they supply replacements incase they ever get damaged.
We've opened up to all races ofcourse. Generally we like to hangout in the city quite abit during our freetime, but sometimes missions are called for.
I bet you're wondering what the school looks like anyways. It's magnificient and even has some areas to better suit the needs of each race, such as merfolk.

Charles Darwin.
Relatively recently Charles has made quite great discoveries and proposed the theory of evolution. This research proposes that Werewolves, Humans and even Merfolk are related. And while we already knew that werewolves were the result of a bloodline curse on a human family, the proposition that merfolk are related to humans as well is something that many find a problem with.
There are many similarities between merfolk and humans, both which sweat which is generally a rare occurrence in mammals making it odd that humans possess this trait, as well as similar but not as defined beginnings of webbed hands and feet.

If this is true however it fractures the way society functions currently, it could very much give certain equalists or politicians a reason to stop treating the races differently. Which can be both and bad. Generally with the use of magic society has to allow certain races to work at certain jobs, as the physical or magical labor required could not be done with certain races.

Whether or not this is something that may be resolved by the war or after the war is unknown. Despite this Darwinism is very much a united front on the use case of magic, regardless of evolution itself. Many fear that a world with only machines could destroy the world, the way society functions, possibly endangering millions and taking as many away from their jobs. The proposal is to go back to an age where only magic was used. And not a mixture of technology and magic.

Taken from the ashes of Victoria Swan's Diary.

At this point you are curious. Why does there exist a military school to begin with. Sure they might need military trainers and a place for that. but teenagers?
Well you should probably know that Masquerade Academy isn't the only military school. It started with the many countries of Darwinism creating their own schools. The war requires elite soldiers. That's the aim of those schools. People don't realize it. You're probably thinking that they could just get any special abilities from once of the races, get a bunch of those people and train them. But Masquerade and the other schools have a...unorthodox approach.
They want to create a new type of soldier... I've said too much. You're not ready to know yet.

Specific Types of Spells.
You should know more about magic and how it works.
Let's start with healing magic.

Healing magic is a very common type of magic that belongs to the category of light magic. It is generally referred to as Life Magic though as it's a broader category than simply healing. This involves giving apart of your lifesource to another being. The amount of life source each person has differs from one to another. There's not much known consistency in how to determine lifesource amounts, as it seems widely independent on magical ability or racial type. Some think it may have to do with the user's hope. Some of the most hopeful people tend to be known healers, medics, and even witchdoctors. You should be careful about witchdoctors, they have some very unorthodox methods of healing that some don't particularly agree from. It is said that it can be possible to sap the lifeforce of a target and give it to another. Lifeforce recovers naturally however. So you don't need to worry about losing it forever

Simultation Spell: Oh yes. How interesting you asked. A simultation spell is a spell that creates an illusion around an area, generally creating... well a simulation. This is quite useful in creating battle scenarios for training, often times the military uses it to reenact battles of history. There's a lot be to be learned from all the wars that have happened in the past. Of course it's only an illusion, so one doesn't need to worry about being harmed. This makes simultation spells incredibly useful for training large groups of people. Although the physical exercise of a real training is usually far greater so these aren't used as a substitute for real training.

Destruction Magic: Destruction magic comes in any school, even psychic. Destruction aims for one thing. To cause damage or harm. It's not particularly known when destruction magic was first used. Although medieval records of wizards harnessing the storms and biblical records of dark practitioners both have evidence suggesting it's been around for millennia. Destruction magic requires a source of power. Whether it be emotional energy or some sort of item. The strength of the spell is both a combination of the source and the skill of the individual. Emotions tend to be weaker than using a item. Although both are capable of some impressive feats.

Defensive Magic: Made to combat destruction magic, defensive magic also utilizes in all schools. From creating shields, to fields, to deflecting spells, defensive magic is one of the most practiced forms of magic. Everyone who has any level of magical capability should learn to defend themselves with defensive magic. Defensive magic requires a deep understanding of the physics of the incoming attack, this makes some of the best scientists also some of the best defensive magic practitioners.

Sigils and Spellscrolls: I've mentioned before that a skilled fae or human magician can create sigils and scrolls. Sigils are symbols. To better explain, sigils are marks one creates and leaves somewhere, often times as tatoos on bodies or symbols on objects to contain a spell for later use.
Sigils are quite useful because they allow for carrying of lots of spells although they tend to fade away after a determinate amount of time.
Spellscrolls however only can be created by using a scroll or parchment. Unlike sigils they do not contain a spell by using a symbol. They write the entire spell onto the scroll, which is why they require an entire piece of paper. Unlike sigils they do not fade over time and can be stored almost indefinitely as long as one keeps the scroll in good condition, damaging the scroll can tamper with the spell so one must be wise in their storage.

Enhancements: Exactly what it sounds like. You are enhancing something. An individuals ability, an object's ability. Anything. This requires ingredients. A combination of ingredients under the right kind of magic creates an enhancement. Enhancements are usually permanent although there had been failure to ever keep an enhancement on a individual forever. Some bypass this by reapplying the enhancement but every time it gives a weaker effect.
Beware though that enhancing oneself is akin to a drug. It is addicting and it only gets worse because the effects are less each time, making you less satisfied each time. It can be quite annoying and some who went too far have even gone mad.

Machines
Automatons: Automatons are basically machines that function in a similar way to humans, having machines with human-like bodies is quite useful.
Limbs and human appendages are often some of the best tools to carry out tasks. From fighting in combat, to cleaning houses they are incredibly effect due to being able to process things faster than others would. Machine-like calculations, and movements allow for incredibly efficiency. It also doesn't hurt to be made out of metal. Although they aren't invincible. It is still possible for them to make mistakes and to calculate wrong. No machine has a perfect design.

Blimps: Blimps are balloon-like aircrafts that fly in the sky. They're useful because they are extremely large and not actually too expensive for their size. They however tend to malfunction quite abit, can be damaged somewhat easily and aren't that fast.

Flintlocks: Flintlocks are guns that fire metal rounds. Essentially exactly what they sound like. There is also magical flintlocks which fire elemental rounds with different effects based on what magic the bullets are enhanced with. See enhancements under specific types of spells.
