When asked about their experiences at Paideia de Amaryllia, the alumni were unanimous in their praise. They called it superior, that its level of education was unseen in other academies on the desert surface. That being admitted into the academy was a guaranteed success in whatever skill you had been scouted for. That it was a paradise, divorced from the monochrome of the desert.

Many of the interviewed played with the idea of returning to their youths. Of reliving their time at the Paideia. And who could blame them?

To ascend through those steps was to pass to a different realm altogether. At the very top, you were greeted, not by the tyrannical heat so intrinsic to Theosmati climate, but by verdant sun rays, filtered through the World Tree’s innumerable leaves. The winds were not so strident there. They hissed no more, whispering, instead, as they passed through, tranquil and transient.

Pebbled across the bark beneath your feet were whole swaths of greenery, little pockets from the past. Offshoot branches, sprouts from the World Tree itself, populated the area, lending itself to a forest-like scenery.

At the heart of this miniature forest was the Paideia itself, an infinite structure that extended throughout the whole cradle itself. The pillars served as the walls for most of the institution, plenty in number, and each a stout figure that held the grand ceiling on high. Small stars, barely imperceptible to the untrained eye, zipped through the pillars, fleeting colours in flight.

A perfect paradise, indeed.

What they never told you, however, was the mind-numbing monotony of paperwork that would follow upon your arrival.

Your first month was spent being tossed around this way and that by professors who, in their words, “had more important things to do than to tell you what forms you were missing.” It was either get it right or be stuck in the strife that was to follow. Sign a non-disclosure agreement this, sign a club registration that. Oh, you don’t have form 3-9ad25j? Have fun tracking down the professor in charge of that!

Suffice it to say, the Paideia was understaffed, and you, overwhelmed. You sign a little bit of your soul away with every new form required of you.

And even after all that, it’s far from over, especially with the Day of Requiem fast approaching.

The Day of Requiem was oft celebrated with much sobriety, as it is then when their God took to slumber and left the world devastated. Coincidentally, it also falls on the same week the welcoming ceremony was to take place. With two events to prepare for, every club has their work cut out for them.

Including yours.

○ ○ ○ — ○ ○ ○

The space delegated to the Archaeology Club was a tiny nook, hidden deep within the labryinthian library. Though getting there was an inconvenience, the club never raised a complaint. Its focus, after all, was rather niche, and usually never had numbers into the double digits.

This year, however, was different. For once, fate decided to favour the club, bestowing unto it a whole host of first years. Now, it’s up to the acting representative to keep that favour strong.

And for his first order of business: getting the group to work on what their stall will be.

nikias

the tsundere

Last year, there were four people signed up for the Archaeology Club, himself included. A small number, yes, but what they lacked in numbers, they matched, instead, with passion. A myriad of hours could go by, and Nikias wouldn't notice, too embroiled in discussion with his peers over why Aniketos fell, why the mountains formed around their God, the battles against the abyssal monsters...

But, with two members having just graduated last school year, their numbers dwindled, with the only other surviving member slowly losing interest.

Nikias feared for its life. But he never allowed fear to hinder him too much.

He chatted up a few of the members from other clubs, campaigned against its closure, protested the number of people required to qualify, saying that quality was better than quantity—and still, all of it to little avail.

The months leading up to the current school year felt like a death march, the end to the only companionship he had found in the Paideia.

Or so it would have been, had there not been a surge in numbers. A surprisingly significant one, at that. Some of the faces that joined were familar, friendly—Alfen was there, something Nikias rejoiced in, thinking that he might finally have his shot at exceeding the man at something. Others, however, were not so welcome. Why Evelyn would ever join the club was beyond him. He'd have thought the witch to join something with a bit more 'pedigree', to cavort with her fellow villains. Still, beggars can't be choosers, can they?

For now, there was a more important matter at hand: their showing for the welcome ceremony and the Day of Requiem. And Nikias was going to ensure theirs was the best.

"Everyone," said Nikias, clapping his hands thrice. "Eyes up front."

"As you all must know, we've the welcome ceremony coming up." He pulled up his chalk and sauntered to the board, already writing his idea in: to stage a play. "To that end, we need to start working on that stall. Deadline of three weeks.

"So, have any of you a better idea?"

Remincicant, Happy to be around his friends!

Alfen was bright about this new club of his. The history! The culture! The utter amazingness of the past at his fingertips. But that wasn't what he was here for. No. While he was no doubt suited for archeology, being patient and okay with the monotonous work thrust apon him. He, in contrast, was here for something more simple. His childhood friends, Niki and Evie were already here and so, that meant, he too would follow. Really he would follow them to death how fond he was of them.

Tedious paperwork piled and piled apon his fellows, but he was prepared for this, always had been. Already swamped with paperwork back home- Water bill this and Taxes that, well it was safe to say he was already wise in the way of not having the right forms. He was smart enough to pay someone else to get the right forms for him first. This school was an opportunity, he wouldn't let out of his grasp he would hold tight just as he had to his childhood friends.

His childhood and current friend Niki was... How do you say it- Rough around the edges, though that didn't make Alfen love him less. He was spitfire, competitive and Alf would be lying if he didn't edge on the man for fun. He'd never admit that, of course. Alfen would admit he had a less than perfect record regarding the jokes he played on others, though he could tell they just saw him as dense.

Similarly, his other most dear friend, Evie, was also rough. Though different from Niki held a similar spitfire to her spirit, hidden behind whatever she threw out. She and He shared a harshness. All three of them did, though his was thinly veiled. Though one thing Evie had that Niki didn't was a certain... Unstableness to her, a clear closeness to breaking.

Alfen didn't want to admit it, though he never admitted to anything, but he couldn't help but wonder if these flaws were the reason he was so invested in these two people. Was it born from his habit of babying people? Did he like people who acted like they hated him? He didn't know, and probably wouldn't for a very long time.

His lake-like eyes fixed on his childhood friend from where he was resting them before, listening to the words that spun out of the taller man's mouth,
"Everyone,"
The man stated, clapping his hands thrice, which was a bit excessive in Alf's opinion, but Niki was always like that.
"Eyes up front."
Alf wondered if Niki's need to be front and center, excessive and proud came from latent abandonment issues from his youth and subsequent upbringing in the Spyridon household, needing to prove his worth to be kept. Alfen wouldn't know.

"As you all must know, we've the welcome ceremony coming up."
He pulled up his chalk and sauntered to the board, Alfen thought he looked silly, especially imagining as if it was the young gullible Niki who fell for things willy nilly in their youth. He was already writing his idea in: to stage a play. Alfen didn't mind the idea, he was probably suited better then most for this sort of thing, infact he wouldn't be surprised if he was the star of the show, but he didn't hold any high standard forhimself, he was here for the enjoyment of being near his friends, so he didn't need to put the effort he would have put in anything that would have affected his future position.
"To that end, we need to start working on that stall. Deadline of three weeks."
Three weeks was long enough for him, hopefully everyone else was up to scruff, he shot a wide but toothless smile at his childhood friends. Alfen was sure that this would go well.

"So, have any of you a better idea?"
He didn't of course. This activity was perfectly fit for his skills. No one who really didn't want to act wouldn't have to, being as they needed stagehands, this was plenty reasonable.

Shoya stands in the back of the nook, leaning up against a wall. He has his face tilted towards the ground, but is keeping the front in his peripheral vision, as to give the illusion of not caring. In truth, he wasn't sure how he ended up signed up for this class, though he figured it was probably in one of those numerous papers he had to sign. Normally he takes something like signing a document serious, but after the 5th, he felt that everything so far had been fine so simply began to sign everything. To Shoya, the idea of a play sounding nauseatingly horrible, but he kept his mouth shut. After all, he really didn't have a better idea. He sighs to himself, thinking about how he lived in Aniketos. He was here now, and he couldn't afford to screw this up. This meant he had to take everything with at least some level of seriousness, which unfortunately for him, included this random club. He hadn't even looked at the people in the club, only keeping vague track of how many people were in the meeting. But that's besides the point. What ridiculous play could they be thinking of? A part of him admittingly had a bit of curiosity, briefly creating a fantasy scenario of playing a character who would monologue about society and lead the rest of the school to realize the horrors of humanity. Though, even he knows that would never happen. All he could do was hope he played some background character or maybe was a person helping from off the stage.

The skies above bore a golden hue, speckled occasionally with strokes of white and blue. If paid close enough attention, you could see the dust suspended in the air, still like the stories shown in paintings.

Almost immediately, her hands itched, eager to do something. More often than not, she was always fidgeting, whether it was fingering the seams of her hair or sketching her newest project, they were always moving. Now though, her hands sat still at her side, not forgetting the harsh words of her teacher.

"Still your hands, girl!" the professor had admonished after he had caught her one too many times doodling away. The horrible treatment had only been offset by the whispers seething behind her back as the students filed out of class.

She promised herself that she would try to stay her hand, but like many things, it became increasingly harder to uphold that promise. After a minute or two, she couldn't take it anymore. She traced her hands along the dirty desk she had taken, drawing forth fantastical creatures upon its face. With the horrid day she had just gone through, she would allow herself this small pleasure.

Still, it did not distract her from the growing desire that gnawed at her with each passing second. She hadn't had time to check the library, what with the school and her poor scheduling. Her foot tapped impatiently as she waited for the meeting to be over with already.

She looked up from her nearly finished sketch, a dragon sprouting six wings, and instead focused her bundled energies on the boy up front. He was discussing something, though the words came out garbled to Phi as she came from her dreary haze.

"–welcome ceremomy coming up. To that end, we need to start working on that stall. Deadline of three weeks. Anyone got a better idea?"

He had scrawled in white chalk at the board the simple message: stage a play. She read the lines three times, the first time mindlessly seeing white letters, and the second registering the silence all around. The third time however finally imparted its meaning into her, and with it, a quickening sense of dread. Her heart thundered in her chest, nearly leaping out of her throat as she thought of standing up in front of thousands.

"Er, sir," she said, rising up from her seat. "M-milord, events like that would require weeks of planning and preparation. I'm not sure our…" she paused for a moment. "...group..would s-suffice for such a task." She tried to imbue her wirds with confidence, but her shaky legs did nothing to boost her esteem as she spoke. She could only pray to the goddess that no one cared to check below.

Scheming, dope political maneuvers are happening

Alfen considered the other's ideas, perfectly reasonable, perfectly boring. What could he expect out of a haphazard decision out of a haphazard group? This group was a collection of individuals with many different motives, which meant conflicts. Conflicts were something he could capitalize on. Regardless Alf really didn't have much interest despite his warm exterior.

Though this group had a surprising amount of potential, with as many prominent figures as it had. Many would come for their show just for that reason, he and his comrades were tall figures in the outside world, even his dear Irona was prominent in some areas, though some seemed relatively unknown. He'd have to watch them closely. They could either be great assets to his plans or great detriments. He would make a plan for both outcomes.

His willowy figure was perched apon a desk, his shoulders squared and his face a placatingly calm smile, he was a figure of nobility even without the fact that he was wearing brightly colored and majorly expensive silks like they were cheap cloth. Even inside his hair gleamed and was well cared for, no one would mistake him for a commoner, plus he was well known to anyone from or who frequented the city of Malum.

His train of thoughts was interrupted by a large bang of the door hitting the wall from being swung so hard, that he flinched for but a fraction, returning his face to a calm mask. He looked at the figure, shorter than him, but was similar in appearance, pink hair similar to his, though a darker shade, generally pretty.
"Ah, my apologies. I am Adelaine Hali Onda."
Ah, she was the Saintess, well known to him at least, seeing as Malum was the Holy City of Light,
"I couldn't turn up last time because of 'creature' issues, so please treat me kindly."

He observed her, while she held herself in a noble way it was in a decidedly soft way, she seemed the type easy to sway. Alfen clicked his tongue unnoticeably, and turned to her more fully as she sat down, opening her mouth to ask,
"So what is happening as of now? Are you all preparing for the ceremony? I'm afraid I've missed out on... everything."

He smiled soothingly, smoothly shifting off the desk and taking a small stride towards the saintess, he bowed lightly and casually with a hand over his heart, a casual way of saying they were either equal or he was a better who respected her, she could think what she wanted.
"It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance, I am Alfen Epifanio Harbin Lumiel, next in line for the anex of Malum. I do hope we will get along..."
He smiled brightly and added a whisper that only she could hear,
"Considering we will work together in the future, yes?"

Alfen was making yet another political move by making light of her position, not reveling it right away to the others who didn't know, showing that he wouldn't talk about her sainthood if needed, and making sure he was regarded as a friendly face, it wouldn't do good to jeopardize his future connections.

He gestured around them with a flourish of his hands,
"We are currently discussing the festival and our ideas of what to do. You have come at an exquisite time."
He smiled brightly and welcomingly at her,
"We have only thought of doing a play or a game show of sorts, so any ideas are welcome."

nikias

the tsundere

Suffice?

Nikias narrowed his eyes. Had she so little regard for the others? Did she think them all mewling babes in need of coddling?

"Noted," said Nikias, a scowl already marring his lips, "and... overruled."

"None of us here are by accident. We all have our own merits, our gifts. To claim that we would not 'suffice' does your peers a disservice."

He sauntered over to the woman and stared her down. Her insult stuck, but there was potential there. Her knees seemed on the brink of buckling beneath her, like a fawn in its first forays through the forests, but, still, she spoke her thoughts. Regardless of the stupidity of said thoughts, that deserved some recognition. To abandon her to but a shell stuck on such grey possibilities would surely be a pity, a waste, even. It wouldn't be too late to divert that into something more productive, more useful for the club.

Perhaps all she needed was a push. It worked on him; it's sure to work on everyone else.

"What is or isn't possible is not the question. I asked for ideas. I suggest you refocus your thoughts to something worth listening to."

Another voice rose up in the background, a voice he'd know anywhere. Again, he narrowed his eyes, but only so that he could listen much better. When she had finished relaying her own ideas, he sneered.

Why didn't I think of that?

As he expected, Irona has shown him up. Exposed his inadequacies. The flaws in his logic. All of it, likely without any particular intent. Why couldn't I think of that? He chanted, again, in his head. It seems, still, a long ways away until he can get to her.

He stared at her for a palpable second, brows furrowed in frustration, before returning to his position.

Two new suggestions were then added to the chalkboard: to stage a quiz show and to host an exhibit.

"...Passable," said Nikias, arms tightly crossed, a paltry bid to suppress anymore of his thoughts from spilling so evidently. (Still, that energy had to be weaned off somehow. His foot started drumming a song against the marble floors. His form, no longer razor-sharp, lost its structure and swayed, ever-so-slightly.)

"It'd do you all some good to try and do the same. I want ideas, not idiocy." Though he generalized his address, those with a discerning eye had no doubt that he had one recipient for that biting remark. Nikias made little secret of it, shooting a stare at the dark-haired woman with every word spat out.

Another voice rose up, but this one was unfamiliar. Something about her name, however, stirred something within. "Adelaine... Hali Onda?" said Nikias, fingers tracing through the members sheet. He felt like he should know of her, but from where?

Looking up, putting a face to that name, only magnified that malaise.

Alfen seemed to be (vaguely) familiar with her, giving this Adelaine their formal greeting. And also, making his move on her. That Alfen only barely bowed didn't escape his notice, either.

Rolling up the members sheet, he thwacked Alfen right on the head. "Keep that to the Anax courts, Lumiel. I'll have none of that here."

"And you." Nikias turned his attention, this time, to their latecomer. He wanted nothing more than to tell her off right this instant—imprudence and indolence were the fastest ways to earn his ire, after all—but, something stopped him, told him not to. Uncharacteristically, he left it at: "...I won't be so lenient next time."

"Now then, as Lumiel had already said, we are currently in the midst of choosing our fare for the upcoming welcome ceremony. Speak your piece now, or hold your silence forever. I'll soon begin tallying the votes if no one else has any inputs on the matter."

Lavi dreamt of blue skies and a gentle breeze as the clouds over head moved lazily across the horizon above.

What he would give to be cloud drifting aimlessly in the wind.

Free of expectations.

Free of demands.

Free of deciding what the archaeology stall would be for the welcoming ceremony????

'Why in the world would that even be a concern of mine? Lavi found himself wondering until his blue skies and cumulus clouds were swallowed by the abyss of waking.

BANG!!!!

Sitting or rather slouched in a section mid-way in the back of the room, Lavi awoken to a intense discussion on quiz shows or stage plays or something to that effect. He wasn't really listening. He didn't really care. His attention now on the pair up front.

Of course he recognized the Sword of Mallum, Alfen Lumiel. Or was it the Shield of Mallum? Lavi never cared to remember. The second person was someone he only knew by name. Adelaine Hali Onda. The saintness to be. Lavi pondered for a second as he shook off the sleep weighing down his body if this Nikias fellow was blessed with good luck as he seemed to be amassing quite the collection of talent.

"I vote for YAWN whatever is easier." Lavi stated as he tilted back in his seat not making any effort to stiffle his yawn. "Though I will admit if your goal is to sell the club a quiz show works. Also less work for me. Win-Win in my book."
