STAY AWAKE // A NEW NIGHTMARE
a nightmare on elm street inspired rp

"Carving away our fingerprints out of our fingertips until they're smooth
Lie awake ; I sleep awake

  • Springwood, Ohio - 1997
It was after the fifth child went missing that the group began to believe Freddy Krueger was real. Though theyโ€™d been friends since childhood, thick as thieves, they were supposedly grounded in their make-believe. Pirates and super spies were their usual, that or traipsing through the thick woods behind their school and pretending that they were searching for invisible monsters to capture and take home. They grew older, but still maintained their innocence when in each other's company. Childhood was bliss, of pretend and play, where real horrors did not creep up on the unsuspecting.

They had their movie nights, sneaking into one of their basements for a sleepover and slipping in scary movies on the VCR. Everyone brought their own that theyโ€™d managed to get from beguiling the home video clerk and paying their whole allowances, and they took their time going through one a night. It was too much otherwise, but after someone brought A Nightmare on Elm Street, things changed. The idea of a child murderer, although fictional, was enough to keep them up at night.

One of them offered an unpleasant reality: that Freddy was real, and he was haunting their town. Kids had been going missing for the last couple years, though they left no trace and nobody had seen them before they disappeared. Springwood Middle School had lost five of their students, and parents were left begging for answers. Could this be the answer? They lived in Springwood, anyway, so why couldnโ€™t he be real? How couldnโ€™t he be real? They were so sure of it, as kids are, and did not waver in their belief. They chose to become sleepless, afraid of becoming one of the missing or worseโ€ฆ murdered. Battling their own personal crisis, the kids did what they could to fight Freddyโ€ฆ

โ€ฆAnd lost one of their own in the process. The victimโ€™s sibling was found guilty, physically present at the scene and covered in the viscera and remains. But theyโ€™d seen it, theyโ€™d seen Freddy. Had their friends?

The trial was a messy one, kept as quiet as possible to keep the sleepy town from becoming an uncomfortable tourist flock. The kid who claimed Freddy Krueger was real.

And then they went to jail. And everything fell apart. While the police had been sure that their top suspect was to blame, an out of towner that had taken residence by the old dump, the evidence pointed otherwise. Kids no longer went missing, but the remaining were never found. Springwood sought to forget their personal tragedy, burying their secrets six feet deep. The friend group left, splitting their separate ways and unable to bear the truth. Ties were severed, some deeper than others, and all that was left were empty graves and broken hearts.

    Present Day - 2007
The nightmares came sudden and quick, vivid and without warningโ€” their friend, who had passed ten years ago, waiting with open arms at Springwood Middle School. Come Home. The five were simultaneously plagued by these dreams, though unaware of each otherโ€™s situation (unless they managed to keep communication after all this time). Others were affected too, even if they hadnโ€™t been in that crucial friend group. But for what purpose?

Freddy lurked in these dreams, with his claw scraping against the walls. He was there, beneath the consciousness of Springwood, and ready to attack again. There were things left unsolved, issues left unresolved, and the dead who needed to be put to rest.

For whatever reason, all have made their way back. That same night, whisked away with no witnesses, a child goes missing in Springwood once again.

Whether or not Freddy has returned remains to be seen. All that matters, howeverโ€” stay awake.
