You and your best friend, Matthew Lynch, have been inseparable since you met in your first year of college. The two of you were each other's first college friend and you quickly became best friends, growing closer throughout your first three years, and now that you're both about to go into senior year, you've decided to rent a house near campus together. You're both nearly done moving in with a month still to go before the start of term when one afternoon, you come home to find Matthew lying on the floor unmoving, breathing but entirely unresponsive. He is rushed to the hospital, but no one can seem to figure out what's wrong with him; it's as if he simply fell asleep and cannot wake up. When next you return to your house, forced to leave Matthew's side at the hospital for a few hours of sleep, you find a young man only a few years older than yourself waiting on your doorstep.
The man introduces himself as Declan Lynch: Matthew's older brother. Despite the fact that the two look nothing alike and Matthew has never mentioned having a brother to you before, Declan is able to tell you personal details about Matthew and his childhood that only heβand you, having been told as his best friendβwould know about. Things only a brother could know. Declan explains that he's come because he knows what's wrong with his brother, knew it would already have happened when he arrived. What he tells you about Matthew seems impossible to believe, even with the proof he provides, but trusting him and accompanying him back to his and Matthew's childhood hometown may be the only way for you both to save the person who means so much to youβand who may bring you and Declan closer than you could've imagined. This may just have been what, and who, you've been meant for your entire life.
