Galleons amongst galaxies, space travel has been achieved, though the technology retains its brass-tubed Victorian style. This is a world of an empire, of noble families and lowborn labourers, where some are handed privilege, and others must cast their fortune to the solar winds and see where they are taken. If one is lucky enough to be gifted the skill of wonderworking, no matter your rank in life you would be admitted into the Imperial Thaumaturge Academy, and train as an equal with nobles in the arts of elemental manipulation, biological transmutation or healing. Those who are drawn to machines may be recruited to build the incredible ships that sail through the stars, or create intricate automatons that serve lords and kings. You may also be inclined toward the Imperial navy, where you might train to fly one of the empire’s glorious solar-sailed ships. Even though the empire is mighty, there is still a free life to be had out on the winds in space, many join pirate crews, and it is said they often have it far better than Imperial sailors. You can play as several different races: an Imperial human, an alien, an automaton or a bioman.

Our story starts with a grand festival in the Imperial capital, and a plot to kidnap the heir to the throne…

The sky burned. Smoke reached its acrid tendrils up towards it, a silent lament to the destruction of a planet...and a people.
Through the dust and debris something moved, a small face pushed up through the ash, dragging a broken body behind it. The being had a short muzzle, downy feathers smeared with dirt, and ruins of once pristine white robes. The figure gasped and winced as it turned onto it's back, looking up at the clouds, reflecting fire and ruin back down at her...and then the clouds vanished, and a lone warrior stood over her, Imperial armour glittering with a cruel light.

"Let me ask," The warrior began, "Was it worth it? Your prophecy?"

The figure coughed, a thin line of blue blood trickling past soft lips. "W-we are the Tey'aran...we do not craft the future...we...only speak it." She took a rattling breath.
"Your fate...empress....is...sealed."

Shen

The paper figures stood to the backdrop of shadow destruction: silhouettes of ruined buildings, and their gleaming empress, standing in cut-out rubble and flickering candle-light.
"The empress left the ruins of the Tev-aran homeworld, but the words the seer spoke chased her all the way back to the capital, and here they remain."
The storyteller was doing a good job setting the mood. His audience of enraptured passersby was a testament to that, even though it was simply a shadow-puppet theatre. His voice kept them all buried deep in the tale.
"The Tev'aran told of a clairvoyant human mage that would one day appear, and mark the beginning of the end for the empire. For that, the empress had the entire planet destroyed. But don't worry, there hasn't been anyone with those powers in long time! The empire is safe, so go, enjoy the festival of unity!!"

He held out his cap to the applause, and smiled at the sound of coins dropping into it.
"Very kind very kind! I'm here all week! Tell your friends!"

Shen tossed a coin from the back row. In the background the plaza was ablaze with Imperial red: banners, confetti, streamers, costumed dancers and stalls filled with every food imaginable. Firecrackers snapped and cracked across the stones and everywhere there were people; some dressed in grand finery, others in simple labourer clothes, on unity day, everyone was celebrating.

Everyone except Shen. Shen had a job to do, but before he could do it, he would need people, special people, and the best way to get those was often at the local seedy pub. Standing in the central plaza he could see the alley where one could be found. A very stark contrast to the immaculate Imperial palace, sat upon a hilltop at the other end of the plaza, glittering in the noon-day sun.

Just beside it were the Imperial private docks, and docked there, was the finest ship Shen had ever seen. Its blue solar sails were a defiant proclamation to the standard Imperial red, and its hull was made of a metal that Shen had never seen before, it looked harder than steel, and shimmered with a black, metallic sheen.
The ship had to come later. For now, the pub.

Anna

Not far off, a plume of smoke streaked across the sky. It had preceded a thundering crash, as the jetpack's owner plummeted headlong into a tree. Branches splintered in a deluge of green leaves, dumping the wayward pilot unceremoniously to the grass below.
"How on earth did that happen?" The young girl struggled out of her emergency parachute, tripping over the line and coming to land on her rump next to the smoking, ruined machine.

"I calibrated the propulsion so carefully! It must have been the left stabilizer again...well, at least I made it to the square this time."
She rose and dusted herself off. "I'll have to find somewhere to repair this...maybe that shop down the way? I hear that Motrillon is good with machines, maybe he's got some parts I could buy...Oh who am I even talking to?"

Zark had not been able to ride the jetpack. She had left him back home, much to the chimera's dismay. He hated being apart from her. No matter, she planned to be back as soon as she had her fill of the festival, and, of course, seen the interior of that fantastic ship that was docked just by the Imperial palace. Sneaking aboard was going to be hard, but she was sure she could do it...if only she could find the right help.

Anna took hold of one of the shoulder straps of her jetpack and began to pull. The thing was heavy, getting it to the shop by herself was going to take...a while.

They were staring.

Killerie could feel the eyes on her from every side as she skittered along the street, watching the signposts to try and figure out where she was going. It was a task made significantly harder by the fact she didn't know exactly where that was.

At least they weren't screaming, the giant centipede thought. Screaming was a very recognizable reaction for her at this point, but in this case most of the people seemed to be thrown by the backpack she was wearing.

And what a nice backpack it was! It was almost brand new, exchanged for all of Killerie's money at a shop a few days ago. It was empty at the moment, but it had so many pockets that Killerie was confident it would be filled in no time. Real leather fabric (a fact that the vendor had pointed out repeatedly, which meant it was probably important) and straps, with twelve pockets and an enormous space she could stuff all sorts of things in.

At any rate, seeing a nine-foot-long centipede very calmly crawling across the street wearing a backpack seemed a lot more palatable than a nine-foot-long centipede without one. She couldn't help but wonder if backpacks were some kind of symbol of honor here. It wouldn't be too much of a surprise - they were handy, after all. And expensive, she mentally added. Very expensive.

Still, the stares were beginning to make her itchy.

She wanted to go talk to the people, not get watched by them! Unfortunately, prior experience had proven that trying to start a conversation with someone who wasn't contractually obliged to talk back ended in more screams, occasionally police, and rarely jail. Since she never did anything wrong, they couldn't usually hold her for too long, but prison was still a little uncomfortable. It wasn't the holding cells themselves - those were alright. It was more the knowledge that she wasn't allowed to leave that felt... wrong.

To make it worse, she couldn't sense any of her siblings nearby. It was a lonely feeling, one she hated immensely, but this was where she'd ended up and this was... well, where she was. She could hardly find a ship and leave without any money.

Wistfully glancing up at the gorgeous black-hulled ship with the blue sails in the distant docks, Killerie couldn't help but wish that she could board something like that. It looked far better than the rattling heap of metal welded together by string and sheer willpower she'd arrived on. She hadn't even been allowed to examine the engine, which just felt unfair. She would've put it back together right away, after all!

Raising her head, she took a deep breath and smelled the air. It was full of interesting scents, most notably tar, sweat, slight amounts of blood, and sweet glorious food.

Killerie promptly made a decision and a four-step fail-proof plan. Find the source of the food, obtain money somehow, eat the food, eventually start a family of small, adorable little centipedes!

...All right, perhaps there were a few more steps before that last one.

Festival was a heaven for Rico, she could smell various kind of foods she never had before. This was the time where cuisines from various corner of the galaxies were gathered in one place. Unfortunately, most of them were overpriced. Just before, she met a boggleman who sell some dishes from their homeland and the price was ten times of what it should be. At least he gave Rico some for free.

Rico never had much money on herself at any time. While she had an overall humble lifestyle but her appettite rarely ever be satisfied, and the best foods need money to obtain. This was quite a common problem among boggleman who ventured out of Green Garden though. Said to have something to do with the Green Garden's soil overflowing with nutritions or something like that.

Cotton candy was what Rico settled to spent her money on, she's in the mood for some sweets. She bought a huge pile of it, enough to actually cover two Rico at once and she carried it out of the festival area so she could eat it without any disturbance.

She arrived at the top of a small hill overlooking the festival. Nice view, nice breeze, nice smell. Perfect. She put the cotton candy on the ground and started to nibble on it while enjoying the view.

*nom nom*

*nom nom*

*nom?*

Her hand picked nothing. She was sure she only started eating one or two minutes ago? But she already run out of the candy... that was much much less filling than she thought it would be. She regret spending all her money for that.

Frustated, Rico intended to just go back to the festival and looks around but a loud crashing noises could be heard somewhere down the hill. Rico rushed towards it without thinking and found a human girl with a weird machine smoking next to her, seems like she just fell from the sky but fortunately she didn't seems to have injury.

"Needs help, stranger? Rico help." Rico scuttered towards the human and looks at the machine the human was trying to drag. She circled the machine and tilted her head left and right trying to examine it, then without warning she transformed into a gorilla with black horns potruding from the side of her head. She's shorter than most gorilla but strong enough to drag the machine.

"Rico carry machine. Where?" She said in a deeper voice than before, grabbing the strap and lifted the jetpack off the ground.

Charlie was walking down a crowded street, avoiding people best he can. No one looked at him as he walked by as if he were not there at all. Charlie had just departed from the ship he shared with a whole bunch of other merchants. The festival was amazing. So many different smells, tastes, and sounds. Although the streets were foreign to him. He wasn't sure where to go in this amazing place. Examining his surroundings he headed further down the street until he reached a small shack with plants being displayed on a shelf.

Charlie approached the shack and smiled excitedly at the shopkeeper. He bought a small plant that had needles sticking out all over it. He now only had a little money left and wasn't sure where he wanted to spend it. Holding the plant close, he continued down the street.

Charlie couldn't control his excitement. The sun beating down on him, the many people and creatures that roamed this place. So many things being sold. Everyone gathered together! He could make so many new friends! So many possibilities! Charlie approached the last building on the street. He may as well head inside, it would be a fun surprise! As charlie entered the building the sun was blocked out, giving the room a gloomy feel.

Charlie saw many people around him, everyone gathering at a table in the center of the room. Other tables were scattered around where rough looking people were having quiet conversations. Charlie approached the middle and took a seat on one of the many stools. A person covered in scars and tattoos approached him.

"What will it be?" They asked in a deep and scratchy voice. Charlie wasn't sure what this meant. He noticed everyone had drinks. Was this one of those places he heard of? The ones where people get drunk? A pub? He didn't want to get drunk.

"Water?" He said to the bar tender, more as a question then a statement. He wanted to stay in this place. Maybe find someone to talk to. They looked at him with an odd expression he couldn't understand, then went off to get him a glass of tap water

Rhea stood on the rooftop of the recycling plant, looking down on the festivities taking place below. From up here, she had a view of the entirety of the factory district all the way to the city center. Stalls swathed in colorful fabrics, selling every and any item one’s heart could desire, had popped up overnight like magic. At the break of dawn, spaces not occupied by a stall slowly started to fill with people from all walks of life and by the stroke of noon, the streets were crammed with so many bodies they seemed to merge into one. Sounds of laughter, singing, and general merriment trickled up to her along with an assortment of smells. All good, she assumed, for people rarely took to bad smells kindly. Rhea paused, taking a moment to commit this new information to memory. One by one she entered the items into her database. If it wasn't good, it was bad. And if it wasn't bad, then it had to be good. As simple as that.

A sharp whistle rang through the factory signifying the end of their lunch hour. On a usual day, Rhea would be returning to her place in the factory line and sort through piles of trash, looking for reusable metals and parts, for the next seven hours. However, on Unity day, they'd all been given the afternoon off. Rhea quickly slipped back down the fire escape and made her way to the main floor to join the throng of factory workers as they punched out. Stepping out into the street, her circuits immediately prickled with the energy radiating from the crowd. How strange that a single arbitrary day could change the mood of the whole city. Rhea pulled the hood of her coat over her head and started walking, letting her feet carry her forward by habit.

The Refinery was an anarchic mess of a bar that loomed just on the edge of the factory district. Inside, it was gloomy, dimly illuminated by age-speckled lights that looked like they hadn’t had a good dusting in a long time, and perpetually smelled of stale cigarettes and ale. The paintwork crumbled on touch and if you just so happened to brush against any wooden surfaces with your bare skin there was a good chance you were going to end up with a splinter. Rhea couldn't explain it but the place intrigued her and she had taken to visiting on most nights, ordering a single watered-down drink (that she never touched) and people watching until the bartender would chase her out. It was here she learned that alcohol could cure the weary and spark impossible joy in people but also start fights out of the smallest things. It was also here she learned that sometimes the only way to solve a problem was by knocking it unconscious.

Its customers were mostly regulars, folk who have been patronizing the place for years and rarely saw a new face in the crowd. The few that wandered in often turned on their heels and left the same way they had entered before the weathered doors could even shut behind them. Today, however, there were more than a few unfamiliar faces inside. Rhea supposed, with the influx of people into the city for the festival, beggars couldn't be choosers when trying to find a place for a drink. Weaving her way through the tables, she stopped at the bar where several customers, new and old, were seated. "The usual." she said.

"Excuse me, miss? Sir? Would you be so kind as to tell me- no? My apologies. Ma'am, do you know the directions toward... actually, I haven't a clue where I'm headed. Sorry to bother. Hello? Yes, I'm looking for a man. Erm, he's rather small, black hair. Yes, I... of course I see how many people there are. I'm very sorry."

Camille felt as though she might leak from every stitch as she was tousled along the street, carried by the flow of the crowds. It had been so long since her days at the casino that she had all but forgotten all crowd control protocols. It wasn't as though any of those would help here, however; the streets were packed tighter than her workplace had ever been. There had to be a civilian for every cobblestone underfoot, and Camille was just one set of feet too many. It was no wonder that she was separated from her charge.

Her pleas for help fell on deaf ears as the throngs passed around her like water. Most didn't even seem to see her, save for the occasional child that would see her and assume that her purpose was to issue them hot chocolate. No matter how politely she turned them down, she always received stinging looks from their parents.

Even after finding refuge in a relatively quiet alley, Camille was still on the verge of overheating. She fretted that if she kept in the sun for too much longer, already practically bubbling from fright, her fingers would light the string handles of her shopping bags. She'd already lost track of her young master, and she wasn't about to lose his trinkets, as well. When he would inevitably find her, he would be delighted to know that she'd kept a hold on his things.

Camille ducked further into the alley when its mouth was beset by youths, chittering and laughing. She found comfort in the shade, and, despite wanting to stay out in sight for her young master, she couldn't resist the dim, welcoming door of the bar that lay deeper. Knowing that she would at least be free of beverage-yearning children inside, she decided to make an entrance.

Name: Larassa SovnaNickname: The Raven
Race: KhoelianHome Planet: Khoeli
Occupation: Bounty HuntressEquipment: Knapsack, Bow, Quiver of Arrows (20/20 Normal, 1/1 Grappling), Twin Daggers

Stepping off the ship with her knapsack slung over one shoulder and various weaponry on her person, Larassa warily eyed the denizens around her. It was another typical port for any city, though Larassa was rather impressed by some of the ships around her. As it tended to go, nicer ships were in port for the festival. She could already see the banners and stringed flags decorating some of the buildings nearby while port workers continued moving crates and loading up ships as if it were just another day.

Overhead, Luness stretched her wings, gliding from the mast of the ship Larassa had paid for passage on. Circling and gliding down to Larassa, Luness landed on her left shoulder and fluffed up her feathers before preening. Frowning, Larassa tried not to think about how long she had just spent without being able to stretch her own wings. She itched at her own left wing, frowning when a feather or two floated away from her. Traveling had a tendency to stress the both of them out and Larassa looked forward to bedding down in the nearest inn. She had never been too picky about her options, usually seeking to save coin where possible.

Shifting her knapsack one more time on her back, Larassa then began shouldering her way through the bustling port. One of the more fascinating parts of her travels had always been seeing the variety of alien life at the bigger cities. Sure, there were plenty of humans, as there often was, but she could also see more unique aliens amidst the crowd. A bit more unusual to see than the varying human-like aliens were the few that obviously stood out in the crowd, such as herself. After all, many had never seen a mixed animal humanoid such as herself. Still, she sighted some centipede being weaving through the crowd and she followed the direction of their travel with her eyes to see the bar not too far ahead. Perhaps she could find a room there. Bars also often had the latest bounties up for display, so this would present yet another opportunity for her. Festival aside, she still needed to earn coin.

Entering the bar, Larassa had to blink a few times while her eyes adjusted to the considerably darker setting inside. She scanned the room briefly, taking in the current situation. As was expected at any bar, there were a few at the bar itself and then scattered smaller groups at tables along the outer edges. Again, there were more unique aliens in here, including some gelatinous being, a muscular man with tentacles seemingly replacing what could have been a normal beard, and even a extraordinarily short being who had to use an extra tall stool just to sit at the bar normally like the others. It was not too difficult to take notice of a few automatons amidst the crowd either, as they often stood out in a crowd in their own way. Though, Larassa had also seen a few that could blend into a human crowd fairly easily, so she supposed she could not assume all humans were humans any longer.

Luness squawked at her and Larassa raised an eyebrow at her little companion before growling softly at her.
"Hungry already, eh? Fine, meal fi'st. Then a room."

With a confidence one builds after handling themselves in many fights over many years, Larassa strolled across the bar without a second glance at anyone acting shady as one does in such a place. Stepping up to the bar, she found herself between the gelatinous being and some young woman with olive skin and a rather stylish haircut despite the location she was hanging out in. While the young woman requested her usual and the other being asked for a simple water, Larassa leaned forward onto the bar to get the bartender's attention with a half raised clawed and furry hand.

"A nut mix fer my lil' friend 'ere and whateve' the best meat yer establishment has. Some whiskey, too."

Larassa promptly set down some coins, what she assumed to be more than enough for what she requested and the bartender wearily eyed her for a moment, no doubt unsettled by her glowing mechanical eye, which only made her stand out further in any crowd. A moment's hesitation passed and then he scooped up all of her coin and gave her a subtle nod before moving on to prepare her requested meal and drink.

*Alaric stood at the edge of the dock. Arms folded beneath his cloak, eyes on a constant swivel. Out of the corner of his eye a very familiar figure moved through the crowd. He blinked twice as he turned his attention away from the glorious black ship he'd been eyeing enviously. Two large feathery mounds rose above most heads making their way through the crowd. It had been what, 2 maybe 3 years since they'd last met?* "I know I'm tired, but I ain't just seein' things right?" *He said to himself as he tentatively took a step in their direction. He hesitated, taking one last longing look it the beautiful blue solar sails.* "Ye'll be mine soon enough." *He whispered before turning his full attention to the receding wings. He was careful to keep his distance, just in case he was wrong. Not likely, but it is a pretty big universe. He didn't want to disturb someone else, and call too much of the wrong attention to himself.*

*He followed the figure for some time, ending up at a seedy bar. He chuckled to himself and let out a nod.* "Yeah, this tracks alright." *He whispered to himself as he waited a few minutes before entering. Once he did it didn't take him long to find who he was looking for. He made his way through the crowded room, his extra arms expertly brushing people out of his way. He moved further to the right, maneuvering himself towards the far end of the bar. Not wanting to make himself known just yet. Holding out a few coin he caught the bartender's attention.* "Two rums please, fast like if ya don't mind." *He whispered as he leaned over the counter making sure his face was visible. He wasn't sure what her reaction would be, but he wasn't going to initiate. He'd let his presence be known, same as always. If she wanted to converse, she would let him know. He was sure of it, for as long as he could remember. He let his metallic prosthetic arm rest on the counter waiting for his drinks.*

Slim alabaster fingers absentmindedly traced over the intricate lines of the harghaast wood bannister as the young woman rested a narrow chin in her other black-gloved hand. A bustling port stretched out before her, with labourers moving to and fro, instructing automaton charges with goods while peddlers and victuallers hustled bystanders off their precious coin.

“Do you know how much it costs?” An airy androgynous voice sounded just off to her side, clear despite the general hubbub of noise. She didn’t need to look to know who it was. She thought he’d have gone ahead with the rest in the private carriage. They so despised being stuck with the ‘rabble’ after all.

“Pray tell what it is you’re talking about, brother.” Long lashes blinked as a light breeze picked up a stray lock of silver, blowing it across her face.

“Why the Jewel Of Ivonglas of course, your carriage across the stars.” She gave him a side-eye, without turning her head and caught a glimpse of her older sibling waving extravagantly to the Star Caravel upon which they both stood. Amiecia said nothing, choosing instead to continue her observation of the masses. She heard a barely perceptible huff, but her brother continued speaking nonetheless. Not that she expected otherwise. So full of himself he probably got off on hearing his own voice.

“A billion crowns… imagine that. Fastest star caravel in all of Arrlesia. . . well, only for about five years I suppose until the damned Karthesians came up with Starskimmer and even then it only held the record for about eight years. . .” Amiecia began wondering if staying behind was a mistake after all.

“Mhm.” She gave him the barest of acknowledgements, anything to get on with it.

“And the Spear of Arrlesia, Pride of the Dominion?”

“Twenty billion crowns.” Her brother continued, without even waiting for her reply.

“The Oberon Stardocks? One trillion crowns. But guess what?”

“What, brother? It’s getting late-,” She felt his arms go around her as her brother leaned in close, pressing his face close to hers as if wanting her to see what he saw. She could now smell the overpowering perfume on the lapels of his shirt. It made her dizzy not to mention her skin crawled at his close proximity.

“The Frederick Arrlesia, finest ship ever built, tribute to her most glorious majesty, the Empress of Imperialis,” he gestured to the ship docked just in front of them which she had been pointedly ignoring.

Priceless.”

Now forced to look, her ocean blue irises traced over the azure solar sails and immaculately polished black hull. Its metal was so dark it seemed that the surrounding light coated the surface like an invisible forcefield, giving it an entrancing shimmer. She couldn’t deny it looked formidable.

“With this, surely her majesty will no doubt be impressed and my name shall be whispered on her ruby lips as the greatest starship builder of all time!”

“Do you know why we Arrlesians make among the best ships in all Imperialist, dear sister?”

“Because we have the purest Solean Crystals-,” before she could finish, her brother let out a scoff that sounded like a dog choking on a bone while laughing.

“Pfft! This is why you have so much to learn Amiecia. Those mere stones? Why you could give the entire precious hoard of it to the Orcumyn and those critters would probably build a mudhut out of it; only it would float and they wouldn’t know why-”

“Have you finished brother I I have-”

“No, it’s blood Amiecia. . . blood. Blood of the founding fathers that runs in our veins. Who pushed the boundaries of technology and space. Something which you seem to be lacking.” A frown formed on Amiecia’s brow, despite her being used to such familial insults.

“What’s with all these after-school activities I hear, Amiecia? Club meetings of whatzitcalled? The Society For The Often Dismissed & Forgotten?”

“I’ve got things to do brother. Now if you’ll excuse me-” Amiecia pushed away from the bannister and smoothened her black dress.

“You know those low-born only join because of all the free food you’ve been giving them, hey where’re you going!?” Amiecia had already begun descending the gangway to the docks below.

“I want to see the city.”

“No, you’re not-,”

“Yes I am.” Her tone was resolute, even her brother knew not to argue with Amiecia de`Valliere when her mind was made up.

“Take a chaperone-,” the older de’Valliere chided but the girl had already descended and was briskly making her way through the crowds. Her brother shook his head and signaled for one of the Dominion Homeguards standing at duty to head after the girl.

“You shouldn't have bothered Caleb,” the lithe young Arrlesian woman spoke when she felt the presence of the soldier at her side.

“You know I can’t do that Lady Amiecia.” She pursed her lips at his reply, but brook no protest. Choosing instead to continue walking through the crowds. She strode with an air of imperiousness, chin held proudly and high-heeled boots clicking across the pavement. This coupled with the armed guard at her side meant that the crowds tend to part before her. She’d planned to visit the city anyway as she had some time to kill before heading to whatever formal festivities were entailed. Unlike the rest of her pompous kind at least she, Amiecia de’Valliere, didn’t mind being amongst the low-born (even if her better-than-thou attitude didn’t do much for her credit, but we aren’t going to tell the young miss that are we?).

She walked for a time, taking in the sights and unpleasant smells, occasionally cringing inwardly at some disgusting looking alien until a pub across the street caught her attention. A watering hole through which townspeople, travellers and adventurers of all sorts gathered. A place of drunken brawls, rabble, mischief and the ‘start of every story’ as her erstwhile disowned cousin Noxvander liked to call it.

It was perfect. The perfect place to experience what it was like to be a low-born.

“We’re heading to that pub Caleb.”

“I don’t think that’s-,” the flustered soldier began but the noblewoman was already striding off.

The young de’Valliere marched right up to the tavern front, thoroughly ignoring a tall man with long raven-black hair gawking in the direction of the docks. Black gloved hands reached out and pushed open the swing doors as her boots clicked on the wooden flooring. Amiecia stopped a couple of steps in, not caring that she might be blocking the entrance somewhat and took a breath, allowing her eyes to adjust to the different lighting.

Ah, the stench of the masses.

It had all started out as a fairly mundane and slow sort of day. Whereas many stories begin with a sudden change, or burst of excitement, this one in particular began with just a simple smile from someone masquerading as a comrade. Elnaril had been going about his business as usual at the academy, hair unkempt and uniform seeming as though they'd needed ironed days ago, when he as approached by someone he was all too familiar with. Brayden was much like himself, only popular and gifted with the kind of charm that would see him stand out amongst his peers in the political spectrum once he'd graduated their secondary academy years. The literal definition of 'popular kid', with his perfect hair and high cheek bones. He'd approached the young bookworm and offered a smile so dazzling it made the very sun itself envious of his grandeur. The thing Elnaril had failed to notice however, was that it didn't quite reach the boys eyes. He was simply delighted to be noticed and acknowledged. And what happened next would change everything, for better or worse. Brayden spun a yarn so well crafted that nearly anyone would have believed it, but he needn't have put so much effort into it. The youthful scholar was already bought and paid for with just a friendly hand on his shoulder. Invited out with the rest of the more well known students to pay a visit to an entirely different planet, and they had room for one more, the height of convenience. But woe! They had no idea who to give the extra seat to, and they needed to fill it or else the trip was ruined. So Brayden had called upon the only person in the school he personally looked up to and admired! Or, at least that was the bait laid out before him.
---------------------------------------

That was a week in the past now, and today was the big day. They'd arrived all excited and Brayden's group all acting very supportive and inclusive of their new 'friend'. They wanted to check out the market in time for the festival, buy souvenirs and trinkets they said. And so their troupe wandered the streets, taking in the colorful decorations and the myriad of seemingly endless merchant stalls.

As gullible and easily distracted as he was, Elnaril found himself lost in a sea of what most savvy individuals would consider junk, but he thought of as lost treasure. So engrossed was he in his spree that he didn't even notice when Brayden gave the others a slightly mod and they left him there alone, cackling to themselves at the trick they'd played on the person they despised most. Leaving him on his own in a strange city on a planet he'd never been to before.

He turned to happily purchase a snack, a sort of sweetened roll with candied nuts adorning the top, before looking around for his friends.

"Uh... Guys..?" His voice easily drowned by the crowd as he started searching for a group who'd never wanted him to begin with.

He wandered for a time, hours. Steadily growing more and more lost and confused. He withdrew a map from one of his pockets but to anyone else it was obvious it was the wrong kind, and upside down besides. Merchants peddled their wares and street performers put on elaborate shows but none of it caught his attention as it had before. Even the large lounging pack beasts used for the transport of goods didn't seem to catch his attention with their bellowing and grunts of annoyance at the loud noises.

Anna stopped and looked up, then her eyes drifted down to the small figure who had spoken. She smiled at Rico sympathetically.
"Oh, that is a wonderful gesture but..." When Rico changed her eyes grew wide. "You're a thaumaturgist!" She exclaimed, "Oh, I mean, a wonderworker. My goodness, thank you!" She marveled at the stranger's new beastly form, before stepping back and leading the way.
"I um, have a little money, for your trouble." She added when they were just outside the shop, a small stand that had been set up not far from the ship that brought the merchants into town.

The old man in the window took a look at the machine. "Yeah we have the parts you need, but our best man for that job just walked out." He pointed in the direction Charlie had gone.

Anna agreed to their price and paid them before turning back to Rico. "I'll have to find this Charlie to get the parts for my jet pack, but I'll likely still need help. Zark usually helps me with these things...Oh I know! Why don't you be my assistant for the day. I can pay you. I'll make it worth your time. I promise."
She was smiling so brightly. "I'm Anna by the way, what's your name?..I don't suppose you could turn into something that could help me track our man down, could you?"

Shen made an entrance. He always did, but how could he help it? It was far too much fun. He pushed both doors so hard they slammed against the walls on either side, rattling a little dust from the shelf overhead. His flowing blue robe shimmered even in the dim light, the embroidered cranes so life-like it looked like they might fly into the astonished faces at any moment. His hair was tied back just loosely with a gold band.

Shen knew he looked immaculate; a defiant contrast to most of the remaining occupants. He skirted a young woman who looked like she belonged there no more than he, and gave her a knowing smile before continuing on. He picked the cleanest corner of the bar and sat on a cushioned couch, reclining back into the soft pillows with his hands behind his head.
"Skellian bourbon barkeep." Is was the most expensive drink the place had. Shen had done his research.

He didn't rise to get it, and after an awkward pause, the barkeep sent one of the staff to hurry over to him. Shen flipped a piece of gold into the boy's hand and delighted in watching the youth's eyes nearly pop from his head.

Shen eyed the room as the boy scurried away, before he reached into a pocket by his saber hilt. The cards were old, but well-kept. A little frayed at the edges, but the marks on their backs were unmistakable. They were fortune cards. They had been outlawed by the empire years ago, right after the Tey'aran massacre. Most fortune telling tools, even harmless ones, devoid of any connection to thaumaturgy or its practitioners had. If you were caught with them, it spelled trouble.

"Who wants to have their fortune told?" Shen announced loudly to the room. It was a daring proposition, and a slap in the face to any Imperial. A dangerous gambit, but Shen wasn't going to get anywhere in this job with half measures.

A red streak flew through the crowds, surprisingly nimble for it's roughly human size. When Zark stood high on his hind legs he could barely see above the heads. He needed somewhere higher. Zark let out a small whimper of anxiety and dashed on. He nearly hit a young man, catching him in the knees, before jumping up to catch him in case he fell.

"Zarr...zarzrrrru." He growled, before patting Elnaril's head and turning to scan the street again. Even with fangs as big as his protruding from his bottom jaw, the worry on his face could not be mistaken. The collar around his neck glimmered in the sun.
Suddenly he stopped short. There was higher! He saw a strange-looking creature with many legs, head towering above most of the crowd. Zark started for her.

He'd been distracted, lost in the cacophony of sounds and sights and smells that he'd never experienced before. Overwhelmed by a soured mixture of anxiety, fear, and unending curiosity that were all swiftly replaced by sheer panicked terror when he was run into and barreled over, caught in the hands of some strange being, looking up into the eyes of the... Furred, fanged... Thing.

His body froze. Eyes going wide at the sight of something so foreign, unlike anything he'd ever seen before. He couldn't tell if it was a person or a beast but the head pat at least alleviated the fear that it was some wild creature out for his blood. It spoke, sort of, and his eyes followed the creatures movement and orientation.

"Excuse me...?" Not quite sure if it was trying to speak to him or he just happened to be in the way, he still shook slightly just seeing those terrifying teeth that he was almost certain were meant to tear him apart.

Killerie was making her way to the bar when a small red creature ran up to her. She'd seen plenty of unusual people and animals already, but what made this one stand out was that it appeared to be looking directly at her.

Bending down, she examined his toothy face. "Hello?"

"Zark!" Zark greeted the bug warmly. "Zaar...Ru?" He put a clawed hand in the air, pointing to her upper segments. He needed to be higher, and Killerie was just the person to help him.
Hazmat44 Hazmat44

Killerie blinked, trying to figure out what the small creature wanted. "You... need to get on me?"

A strange request to be sure, but a quick look around revealed she was a good bit taller than most of the other people. Still, she found herself slightly flattered that it wanted to come up to her.

"Well, okay then." Turning, she flared her legs out and presented her back. "Climb on up!"

Zark gave her a broad, toothy smile and jumped. His toepads stuck to the carapace easily and he found a perch just behind her head. His tail coiled loosely about her segments, not hindering her ability to walk. This was a nice person, he decided.
"Zark!"
Hazmat44 Hazmat44

"Zark to you too!" Killerie told him, and raised herself a little higher. She had no idea who or what he was looking for, but now she rather wanted to help.

"Do you like my head? I polish it sometimes." Scratching her lower jaw with a delicate leg, she pondered aloud, "If you're hungry, we can go get something to eat. I'm hungry too!"

She paused as she remembered that she did not, in fact, have any money. "I'll get a job and then we can eat," She amended. Turning to the bar, she happily continued on her original path, careful to keep her head as level as possible so as not to disturb her fuzzy passenger. At least he didn't weigh too much.

Pushing the door open, she took a step in and immediately processed the room. Tall black bird/fox/human, green liquid-looking person, fancy person, person who smells like metal, person with hot water in her head, person with four arms, person with a bunch of cards, person giving drinks to people.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa! No bugs!"

Angry person giving drinks to people. Killerie waved a leg at him. "Hello! I"m here for a job and then maybe food. I'm really good at-"

He gestured to a much larger and significantly more intimidating person leaning against the wall. "Not here you're not! OUT!"

The bouncer started making his way over to Killerie, a dark expression on his face. "I'm really good at fixing things!" Killerie yelped, backing away. Startled by the sudden movement, the red fuzzy creature fell off her head. She caught it, pulling it against her stomach with her legs. "I don't need that much money and-"

"You heard the man, get out." The bouncer firmly grabbed a hold of her forehead, steadily pushing her out of the door.

She could feel her lower legs skating across the floor. This man was strong! "But I'm really looking for a-"

He gave her one last shove, and she tumbled out of the bar, instinctively curling around her new aquaintance and rolling back to her feet. The door slammed in front of her, and she felt an uncharacteristic spike of frustration. "But - but I-"

She slung her backpack off of herself, waving it in the air. "But I have a backpack!"

Weren't they a symbol of honor?! Why was he mad at her for being a bug?!

She fumed silently, watching the bar-room door.

He watched the pair disappear... Well, not so much disappear as they stood out quite a bit against the backdrop of less interesting individuals. He was still shaken by the appearance of such an odd creature and those teeth...

Shaking himself, he sighed and tossed away the bun he'd bought without so much as a bite missing before trying to force up enough courage to ask random strangers for help. He wandered aimlessly eventually ending up not far from the dock or port, walking up to the least intimidating people he could find.

"P-pardon me, miss.. Have you seen a young man about my age, taller, tan with bright platinum blonde hair dressed in a school uniform?" His words meant for a young elderly woman he'd spotted and thought looked nice... Until she turned and gave him the most ice cold stare he'd ever been on the receiving end of for interrupting her conversation with a man old enough to be his grandfather, causing the young scholar to backpedal and trip over a crack in the ground and promptly fall on his rear.

Zark chuffed as he was caught safely in the bug's careful arms. He sat there as the man berated her, wriggling like an awkward infant before they were both shoved unceremoniously back through the doors. Zark wiggled from Killerie's protective embrace to bark angrily at the man who had pushed them.
"Rrrr. Zarkzark!" He snorted, turned and scratched the dirt at the pub with a hind foot, then he went to make sure his new friend was all right.
"Zar zar?"

Charlie perked up at the sound of a stranger yelling in the bar about some 'fortune'. How do you read a fortune ? It seemed odd to him so he stood up and walked over to the fancy looking human. They had cards in front of them that Charlie couldn't recognize from any game he had ever played. He was completely oblivious to the commotion near the door.

"Excuse me? What is a fortune telling? Is it a card game? Like the gambling one someone made me play once?" Charlie asked, not at all intimidated or weirded out at how fancy this person was. Although he was amazed at how one can be so fancy.

Ricotta

"Money thank you." Gorilla Rico gratefully accepted the coins and slowly counted it one by one as Anna continued her business with the repairman. Her ears perked up when she heard Anna offered her a small job for the day. She needs money to enjoy the festival to its fullest so she nodded enthusiastly at the offer.

"Rico is Ricotta." She introduced herself.

"Rico is good at assisting, especially tracking." She took some time shifting through multiple forms, seemingly trying to determine which one would function best at the current environment. At first she transformed herself into an eyeless cat-sized rat, then to a large bat, then to a small kobold but in the end she picked the form of a blood hound, complete with her signature black horns on the side of her head. There's now a visible big scar across her face and a pouch was tied to her neck, which was actually filled with the money Anna just gave her. As much convenience biological transmutation could be, it couldn't change coins into something else.

Blood hound Rico sniffed the surrounding, trying to determine which scent might be relevant to look for this man they're trying to find. At first the abundant of human scent wafting in the air made it hard for her to track down any particular scent but a tiny bit of green droplet on the ground gave her the necessary clue. It had a distinct scent very different from a human.

"Is this repairman a green slime?" Rico's voice now became very gruff, each transformation not only make her looks different, but also sounds different. Her question was answered with a nod from the old man.

"Easy then." A muffled growl escaped her snout as she looked at Anna. "Follow Rico."

Rico dashed through the crowded street, energetically zigzagging through the stalls and occasionally stop to give Anna some time to catch up. She circled a particular shack selling plants but then realized the man was already left that place so she continued following the smell until they arrive at the entrance of a pub.

"Should be here." Rico excitedly jumped on the spot while pointing at the bar. She was just about to enter the place but the sight of a big centipede and a red creature near the door distracted her. Definitely a strange pair.

Her hands swiftly moved the three cups on the crate, hidden underneath laid three gold coins. Whether it was side-by-side or diagonally, Maeve shuffled the cups with ease before stopping, urging the onlookers to gamble on the cup they believed contained the coins.

"Find the coins!"

A stout-bearded man grumbled, clicking his tongue before haughtily laughing, "Too easy! Gotta up yer game, girlie." He confidently pointed at the cup in the middle before his taller counterpart sneered.

"It won't be there again, Maverick. She switched it!" Malik grunted before shoving his brother aside."It's the one on the left end."

"Are you sure, boys?" Maeve singsongy mocked, the edge of her lips curving up into a smirk. Without so much of a pause, Maeve lifted the cup on the far left end, displaying the coins underneath the cup.

The onlookers that crowded around her gave various reactions. Some rolled their eyes while some stared in amazement at the coins under the cup, applauding the twins' all-"seeing" eye.

"Told ye' Maverick. Now ye' get can't yer panties in a twist."

"Shut it, Mal. Again!"

With a coy smile, Maeve nodded, "Until you're satisfied." And she continued, edging both Maverick and Malik to continue her little game, each time allowing them to rightfully point out the correct cup. While some onlookers continued to observe the game, others left to continue to enjoy the festivities. As it was almost time to end her game, Maeve found an opening for their greedy eager eyes.

"Let's up the stakes. Final round, you find the coins underneath the cup, and the entire loot is yours along with this," A pause as she leaned over to the side, picking up a small coin bag filled with gold before hurling it on the crate, "winner takes all."

Not thinking of the consequences and due to their winning streak, Maverick and Malik jumped on the opportunity. "All in!" They exclaimed, before adding more gold coins to the loot.

Small laughter escaped her lips as she shook her head, "You sure?"

"Whaddya mean, 'are we sure'? Keep score, girl. It's ours."

With a small shrug, Maeve opened the cup where the coins laid, showing both the twins and the crowd that formed around her. Once they had a good look, she closed the cup and began her shuffle. A small hum escaped her lips as she moved the cups. Her fingers daintily touched the cup, gliding it smoothly across the crate in diagonal and fluid motions. At the end of her shuffle, Maeve let out a soft sigh.

"Pick your fate."

Maverick furrowed his brows while Malik rubbed his chin, contemplating on the cups. "It's the middle one." One of them spoke up before the other groaned, "No, it's the other one, on the right."

The small bicker ensued and Maeve clicked her tongue, "Now, now. Remember, it is a 50/50 shot, except, you choose wrong, you're left with nothing." She took note of the sweat dripping from the side of Maverick's face while Malik's face screamed with frustration, if one counted his reddened cheeks. "Tick-tock." Maeve waggled her fingers.

At her words, Maverick pointed at the cup on the right, "That's our final choice." Although Malik wanted to deny, Maverick nudged his arm as an "Ow!" escaped his lip.

Slowly, Maeve reached for the right cup, observing the twins' movements before surveying her surroundings. It was the moment of truth. Lifting the cup, the coins were, in fact, not there. A loud gasp purveyed through the crowd as Maverick and Malik seemed to be too puzzled and shocked to move. Without wasting any time, Maeve slowly stood from her seat and began to pack away the cups.

"Sorry, boys. Looks like "Lady Luck" was not with you this time."

Quickly taking the gold coins from the cup, the additional ones from Maverick and Malik, and her gold money bag, Maeve rushed to say her goodbyes. "That's all for now! Better luck next time!"

Shaking out of their stupor, a flushed face filled their features before Maverick bellowed, "You! Give us back our money!"

Sticking her tongue at them, Maeve took off, maneuvering through the crowd before hearing curses and yells behind her as Maverick and Malik ran after her.

A small giggle escaped her lips as she ran through the crowd - coins, gold, and money in tow as the sound of her headpiece and bangles on her arm and leg chimed with her. They were bumbling idiots and Maeve couldn't be more proud of her ability to hustle them out of their finances, especially hungry money baffoons like them. All it took was patience and she took advantage of their vulnerability.

However, as she maneuvered her way through the city, she knew she could only run so far before even the guards from Imperils caught up with her. Instead, she noticed an alleyway and took her chances. What she didn't expect, however, was to stumble upon two creatures who were thrown out of what seemed like a bar tavern and two other, carrying in tow some sort of broken machinery.

It was too crowded for her.

Regardless, she took the chance to catch her breath, taking in those around this one place.

One of them was a massive, lengthy, bug-like creature with many legs. A shiver ran up her spine as she observed the centipede. However, the backpack they had gave her slight curiosity before she turned away to take in the appearance of the bird-like chimera. She didn't know the situation. Her mouth opened to say something, especially towards one who seemed human and her blood-hound companion.

But, in the far-off distance, she heard the disgruntled yells of the twins and loud footsteps of guards following with them.

Without thinking, Maeve quickly called out, "Coming inside?" before moving and slipped inside the bar, hearing someone's endless questions.

"Excuse me? What is a fortune telling? Is it a card game? Like the gambling one someone made me play once?"

"Gambling?" She called out. "Sort of, if you like playing with fate. But, fortune telling sounds quite interesting. Count me in."

Larassa Profile.png
Name: Larassa SovnaNickname: The Raven
Race: KhoelianHome Planet: Khoeli
Occupation: Bounty HuntressEquipment: Knapsack, Bow, Quiver of Arrows (20/20 Normal, 1/1 Grappling), Twin Daggers

Just as she received her mug of whiskey, Larassa heard a familiar voice and her ears perked towards it. A devilish grin spread across her face, her fangs shining in the dimly-lit bar, as she took a long swig of her whiskey. Slamming the now empty mug down on the bar, Larassa turned with her grin to face Alaric, who was two seats down from her since she had sat between some strangers to begin with.

Luness hopped down from Larassa's shoulder and nonchalantly moved along the bar to be in front of Alaric. Tilting her head to the side, Luness promptly pecked at Alaric's metallic arm.

Raising an eyebrow at the sight of it, Larassa decided it would be easier to speak without someone in their way. With a sigh, she stood up from the bar and left the two strangers behind, finding an empty barstool beside Alaric. Sitting down, she mindfully shifted her wings so that their bulk would not be pressing up against Alaric, though the confined space limited her ability to do so.

Following Lunes' lead, Larassa promptly poked Alaric's metallic arm and said, "How's it holdin' up for ya?"
Curiously, Larassa looked it over and did not bother to ask for permission before she lightly touched it and moved it this way and that to get a better look at it. She squinted, using her mechanical eye to better see the arm in the dim lighting.

The bartender had just placed down a plate of fresh mystery meat and a small bowl of random nuts for Luness when someone made a not-so-subtle entrance into the bar. Curious as ever, Larassa turned slightly in her barstool to eye the newcomer. She stood out like a pig in a palace sort of way, but the complete opposite. Larassa could only raise an eyebrow at the stupid person who was clearly begging someone to rob her. It would no doubt happen soon enough if she really wasted her time hanging out in this kind of place while being dressed that way. She reeked of money and Larassa was not even close to get a proper scent from her.

Sighing, Larassa had just started to turn back to continue her conversation with Alaric when yet another individual made an entrance, albeit a far noisier one. She was rather impressed by how he managed to narrowly avoid striking the woman with either of the doors. Rolling her eyes at the overly dramatic individuals now crowding this space, Larassa returned to her conversation with Alaric, not really hearing what the newcomer ordered, but catching the tail end of his entrance when he mentioned giving someone a fortune.

Larassa could not help it, as her ears perked in the direction of this odd man. He was like the other woman, certainly not dressed for this kind of environment. Distrust coursed through her veins, as Larassa scowled at the man. He was quite literally begging for trouble announcing that sort of thing anywhere in this city.

Muttering under her breath, Larassa said to Alaric, "This fool's beggin' to get shanked announcin' somethin' like that around 'ere."
Turning to face Alaric once more, Larassa grinned again and added, "Wanna bet which of those two morons gets mugged first? My money's on the woman who's clearly out of 'er depths right now."

Again, their conversation was cut short, as yet another individual made an entrance. It was really going to be one of those days, huh?
This one certainly stood out in a crowd, but not for the same reasons as the other two. A sentient and large centipede was certainly one of the more bizarre aliens Larassa had seen. Not that it was anything unbelievable, just stranger than most aliens she interacted with.
Unfortunately, the sentient centipede was not welcomed in this very alien-friendly bar, something that surprised Larassa since she could also be a health hazard to a food establishment with all of her fur and feathers. She could only watch while a slightly agape mouth, as the poor individual was rushed out of the bar along with whatever creature had accompanied it. She did not really get a chance to see this creature, as she was still baffled by how the bartender treated this person.
She found herself muttering to Alaric once more, as she whispered, "What was that all about?"

After that unfolded, the bar was awkwardly quiet for a moment before conversations slowly picked up again. Out of the blue, someone actually took up the odd man's offer of telling someone's fortune. Larassa raised an eyebrow, for what felt like the hundredth time in such a short span of time, and watched the gullible gelatinous being make his way over to the odd man. Looking over his attire again, Larassa decided he must be some kind of con man with that appearance. He surely was not dressed seriously.

Musing over all the chaos that had unfolded in such a short span of time, Larassa finally remembered her meal and picked up a leg of some animal and promptly tore off a chunk with her fangs.
Luness followed suit after bobbing her head this way and that to all of the commotion. She finally acknowledged her bowl of nuts and began pecking at it, gobbling up her own meal.

Not even two bites into her meal, Larassa heard someone enter the bar and acknowledge the fortune-teller.
Oh great, another moron, she thought as her ears perked backwards to listen in. Her mind was mostly focused on her meal now, after her stomach had rudely reminded her that she was starving after a long few days of traveling and living off of hardtack.

Larassa did not bother to look at this new person, but their voice made her tense instinctively. That sort of tone almost always meant trouble. Larassa made a mental note to keep her distance from this female.

As she continued to enjoy her meal, only Larassa's ears betrayed her mild interest in the fortune-teller nearby.

Alaric chuckled to himself as Luness hopped up to him. Pecking at his hand he lifted a finger to pet her feathers affectionately before she turned her attention to food. He made no motion to pull away as his old friend handled his arm. Instead he smiled his small smile and took a drink in his other arm "Well, no complaints that's for sure. If it were this, or no hand at all, I'd choose this 110 times out of 112. We'll chalk that last time up to new experiences." He chuckled as both their attention was drawn to the sudden burst of action and noise. He heard the man calling or fortune telling. Dangerous in this part of the galaxy, very bold or very foolish. His eyes darted to the entryway and he nodded as he spoke to Larassa "I'll bet you another slab of meat she gets targeted before he does." He offered in jest before turning around. He tried to fix his attention on his drink once more. Commotion back at the door would not allow it. He turned back to the door in time to see the bouncer making a show of pushing out a disheveled, humongous centipede, with a furry creature in their arms. "Don't know, but I don't like it. Fella wantsta work should be allowed to look for work." He mumbled into his glass finally draining the first of the two. "I may feel bad enough to try an find some work for them...maybe" He said as he pulled his second glass to his lips and turned his attention once more to Luness. He absently stroked her feathers. "How you been holding up? Been quite a while." Alaric was used to tuning out background noise, with hearing as sensitive as his it was a must. He focused his attention on Larassa, and the fortune teller who seemed to have found a willing specimen. This at least would be an interesting day.
