  James focused on astrophysics, mathematics, and aerospace engineering. He does have a bit of a green thumb, something he got from his mother. He is quite a decent artist, sticking to sketches rather than paint. He could easily make a living at it.
  
  Unusual Abilities
  Hyperthymesia. This is total recall. He can recall what he had for breakfast 10 years ago. He simply can’t forget. While generally useful, it also makes him prone to PTSD. For an idea of hw uncommon this is, there are currently 61 people diagnosed with this on Earth as of 2022 (about 1 in 100 million).. Drugs that prevent the formation of memories - like Rohypnol - can leave blank periods in his memory.
  
  Senses so unusually sharp that he borders on Aspergers. This is so bad that at times he needs to decompress from being in situations that create information overload. He wears sunglasses and earplugs to filter sensory input.
  
  Very high IQ. Prodigy in Astrophysics, Math, and Aerospace engineering. He doesn’t need a computer to help him chart a course. Even temporal mechanics presents itself as simple math.

  James spent some time among some very sketchy underworld types on the frontier, especially the Briar Patch. Some might say that he was involved with smugglers. Some of his best friends were Ferengi. It was the Ferengi, Ishka Reyga, who convinced him to end his life of dubious pursuits and become the human alpha male he was meant to be. Of course, he doesn’t realize this was at the suggestion of Edi who intervened at the behest of his parents. Still. It worked.
  
  He has a reputation of getting involved with women he shouldn’t, typically daughters of influential parents who have done their best to burn him and end his career before it even started.
  
  At the Academy James’ biggest problem was that he was still a rebel who detested authority figures. His issues might have ended his career if not for Ishka and a few other cadets who had begun to depend on him - the Duck Dodgers. Ishka reminded him how badly she wanted to become a science officer. The Athena was his fourth assignment since the Academy. He served in a fighter group, then aboard the Enterprise, then in a patrol group of the Briar Patch.
  
  (Redacted) His Starfleet career in the Briar Patch was actually mission work for Section 31. None of that is in his records. Instead he has been supplied with a painstakingly detailed backstory of his time that looks as routine as possible for such a region. His ship back then was named the Garbage Scow - and was a tramp freighter made from an old Starfleet hull, with components of various origins added on.

  (Hidden) James' parents (those aren’t even their real names) were legends in their own time, the early 21st century. They escaped the horrors of the Eugenics Wars and fell victim to the physics of a black hole, only to show up again in Federation space in 2380. Having suffered at the hands of the governments of the Eugenics War era resulting in a strong mistrust of the Federation, his parents still chose to enter Starfleet. In 2382, they were almost ready to receive commissions when they discovered that his older sister was on the way. His father refused to enter Starfleet and chose his family over the Federation.
  
  (Open) James was born in 2385. Despite having always promised himself that he would always honor the choices of his children, James’ father was disappointed when his son turned away from sciences. James was a born rebel who did NOT want to live in his parents’ shadows. As soon as he was old enough he struck out on his own.
  
  Friends:
  Duck Dodgers in the 25th Century! (group of friends at the Academy - who thought he meant Duck and Dodgers), This was his Cadet Squadron, whom he nearly got kicked out of the Academy. They include Ishka Reyga (Ferengi), T’konn (Vulcan male), P'Ruuras aka Hairball (Caitian female), Tolpryn (Barzan male - the first of his people at the Academy), Kendor (Roylan male - the species of Scotty’s friend on the ice planet). Only T’konn understands where the name actually comes from. James gave him a copy of a short video upon graduation. It should be noted that the first time he backed the ship out of spacedock he quoted the scene.
  
  Ishka Reyga (Ferengi), descendant of Dr Reyga, the inventor of metaphasic shielding. She is probably the best friend James ever had.
  
  Section 31 - if you can call them friends.
  
  Enemies:
  Lots. Just … lots. Women, friends and families of those he has spurned. Briar Patch related enemies, many of whom don’t even know who he was. Any friends of Khan if they ever learned of his existence.

  His psych profile indicates that he is very uncomfortable with his abilities and fears accusation of being an Augment. He will avoid competitions of physical skills or hold back. He is otherwise a hot shot fly boy.
  
  James has a passion for speed. He has flown just about every sort of air or space vehicle there is. And in doing so he has broken quite a few laws and safety regulations. He does draw the line at a certain point. One such point was refusing to attempt a Kolvoord Starburst maneuver at the Academy at the prompting of other cadets. As it turned out this was an attempt to get him kicked out of the Academy. When asked why he refused he explained that HE wasn’t afraid of the maneuver, but felt that it was stupid for a GROUP to attempt such a maneuver just to show off. He didn’t mind practicing the skills involved to accomplish it though and thought every cadet should do so.
  
  Perhaps his best and most defining moment in Starfleet was when he put in hour after hour to help another cadet make it through the Academy. There is a Core Curriculum that every cadet must get through. The other student was struggling with Pilot 101. For James this was something he could do in his sleep. His reasons for doing so were … complicated. But they are in his Psych profile records. The other cadet’s parents had shown up and tried to get him to leave the Academy and be part of the family business. They were wealthy and didn’t want their son going off to fight Borg or something. He was “better than that.”
  
  Skydiving, parasailing, gravboarding, solar sailing. He enjoys them all. He’s also learned to ski (snow and water), scuba dive, rock climb. He loves to test himself against himself.

  Pets are most certainly for other people. Animals seem to like his sister. Wild animals will walk right up to her.   Height: Five feet with a little stretch.
  Hair Color: She has gray, short, and very soft fur, with black stripes going up her snout and down her back, and black rings on her tail. She also has black “socks” on her hands and feet.
  Eye Color: A very feline yellow.
  Scars/ Other Facial details: She has a thin healed scar starting on her left ear and going a little bit down the side of her muzzle, nearly hidden under her fur. She also wears glasses, mostly in private when reading or doing detail work, as she is far-sighted. Both of her ears are a little ragged, and she has a few scattered small scars, mostly invisible under the fur. The most noticeable slightly distorts the right corner of her mouth. She looks rather like a feral cat that made it good.
  Body Type: She is a very peculiar kind of thin, both clearly a little underfed and scrawny, yet still eating enough to have a wirey sort of muscle.
  Attire: If not in uniform, she is either in workout clothes or in random comfortable detritus to do engineering work in.

  Awards: Proud receiver of the barely not court-martialed award. Technical receiver of a medal for bravery in preventing a war.
  
  Skills: She is, primarily, an engineer, with a focus in weapons tech, shipboard and otherwise, as well as shield-tech. She was briefly a chief engineer aboard a minor ship before a major, firm demotion. She is also likely one of if not the(her own ego speaking) most technically skilled non-klingon hand to hand fighter in the federation. She is however almost entirely untested in actual combat.

  She was one of the youngest engineering chiefs in history, a prodigy, and remarkably talented. Then she shot her commanding officer. Twice. The only reason she is still a member of Starfleet is the fact that her commanding officer was about to start a war, and had attacked her before she doubletapped. Combine that with a little bit of secret nepotism and she was “only” demoted as far as possible and given a push-out job. Ironically, in a politically motivated diplomatic coverup to keep the peace, she was simultaneously given a very important medal for bravery in acting to stop a “rogue agent masquerading as a captain”. Now she is a nobody aboard a garbage scow, nobody but the captain even knowing her past, at least from her.

  She has no friends, the few she had were mostly similar prodigies or social climbers. Once she fell from grace, they all stopped talking to her. Family she never quite had, with her parents both being Starfleet. A year after she was born they were called out for one more brief mission, leaving her in the custody of their third, a captain in his own right. They both died. The other man stuck around on and off, eventually disappearing into his career for good after she turned seven. Unlike the others, he is still out there somewhere, and there is a small matter of her uncertain genetic parentage she is studiously ignoring. The commanding officer she shot did also survive, although he was in fact entirely removed from Starfleet. She hasn’t spoken to him since and has no idea of his current activities, but he likely isn’t fond of her.

  Include as needed. I just want enough to give people a first impression they should get as a minimum here. Feel free to abandon the list and replace it with a narrative.
  General: Maria is a woman in part defined by her history, having grown up in a mostly human Federation orphanage. It was a rough place, defined by cliques, standoffish specieism, and, due to them mostly being Starfleet brats, a strange competitiveness over their parent’s honor. She never found out how her parents died, and had a weird pseudo-parent still sometimes around for the first couple years she was there. This never allowed her to fit in, and as they grew up she got in a lot of fights, going from kitten to feral adolescent.
  
  She might have disappeared into the system or dead-end jobs, but she was a bit too smart, and fueled by spite. She started with martial arts, someone working for the orphanage having reached out in the hopes that it could be channeled positively. They were successful beyond their wildest hopes with skill grew discipline, and other children quickly stopped picking fights with her. She remained isolated, but she now had a teacher she trusted, and who noticed her other potential.
  
  From there everything was on the up, her martial arts teacher called in a favor and got her evaluated for advanced placement, which she aced. Her growth in both of her studies proved exponential, quickly surpassing most of her childhood competitors. Just as quick she no longer cared, growing up year by year. Much of a normal life, a normal childhood, fell entirely to the wayside, but she reveled in her growth. She went to Starfleet academy early, and graduated early, being placed aboard a minor ship as a proving ground for later growth.
  
  Everything was going well, but her captain was a nepo-baby and a fool, and it all came crashing down when she was forced to shoot him. See, for all her anger issues and ambition, she is a woman of iron-clad honor. Her early life was met with little justice, and she will do everything in her power to create justice by her hands. As talented of an engineer and martial artist as she may be, she is however greatly lacking in social refinement and a great many more normal skills.
  Quirks: She has no bed, and few personal items in her quarters, one of which is a quarter-staff. She forgets to eat constantly, and is rarely seen during down-time, but is extremely diligent on duty. She can quietly be quite kind, but she hates it being traced back to her.

  Her personal quarters have been seen by few, but to a trained eye are what you might call a low level biohazard. The safest area is a corner full of various scattered boxes. The rest of the room is dominated by the machinations of a prodigy engineer, with an at best loose adherence to safety protocols. At the very least there isn’t anything obviously hazardously mishandled. There are however far too many bits of wiring and metal and batteries and odd high-tech devices. Notably an experienced engineer might be able to tell that some of these devices aren’t really appropriate for her low rank to possess.
