Spirits Always Return

Bland. That's all that Chihiro could think of as she looked at what her life had become. Ever since she and her parents moved into their new house, she had felt as if she had lost something; it was as if there was a gaping hole in her heart. It didn't take long for her parents to notice her strange behavior, and they soon admitted her to a psychiatrist. She hated the feeling of being so different, and how her therapist looked at her as if she was just another crazy person that he had to deal with, so she began to tell him what he wanted to hear after a few weeks of meaningless sessions. Almost immediately after she began lying, he had give her a clean bill of health, ridding her of the weekly visits.

Doing this gave her a new skill: The ability to seem perfectly fine no matter how frustrated or troubled she actually was. It had gotten her all the way through elementary and middle school, and now she was a high-schooler. It had been so long since she had first attained her depression, but she remembered that moment as if it had occurred just yesterday. It was ironic, seeing how everything between the morning and night of that day was nothing but an incoherent blur to her. No matter how much she struggled to recall the details or slyly brought it up to her parents to get information, she could never fill in the gaps. She had days where she became so upset by it that she wouldn't leave her room for hours on end, crying and desperate to understand what was wrong with her; why she couldn't just be normal and happy like everyone else.

She knew long ago that without her memories, she could never truly be the same as she had been. Happy, carefree, looking forward to her future. Now all she had were empty days spent going through the motions, her life becoming meaningless. As she droned out her teacher's lectures, she couldn't help but sigh. It would probably be easier if she had someone to talk to about this that genuinely cared and wanted to help her. Sure, Chihiro loved her parents and all, but they never understood what she was talking about every time she opened her mouth, and her friends seemed to be too sucked into their own lives to listen to her troubles. Oh, how she wished for something, anything, to happen that could give her life a purpose again.

Haku had been free for a while now. Not knowing exactly where to go, although he did end up staying a while at the bathhouse since he considered it a home. One day, he just realized that Chihiro should be in high school by now. He wondered how she was doing. If she remembered anything about their adventures and how she saved her parents. Probably not.

He left a note stating that he was going to the human world to find Chihiro. He missed her more and more by the year and it seemed apparent to all the spirits around. Haku passed that familiar walk, the tunnel to the human world that he watched Chihiro go through long ago. Now he was walking through it. As he exited it, he had no idea where to go, but he just thought about her and was quickly able to figure out where she was.

As he got to the town, he wondered where he was going to live. He could probably find an abandoned home and make it new again easily. He walked around realizing that his hair was still green. Something that was--unusual for humans to see. He quickly walked and found an abandoned home on a hill. As he entered it, he noticed that quite a few spirits had made their homes here, despite it being the human world. With a smile he asked, "Do you mind if I live here too?" Most of them were small, but none of them objected to him living there. Nodding he said, "Alright then, we're going to have to fix this place up, who knows when we might have visitors."

The spirits began to fix up the house while Haku quickly made his hair black. One of the spirits had black hair dye around. Apparently the spirit liked to hoard hair dye. He quickly began to dye his hair black so that he would fit in better with the humans.

School had finally ended, and Chihiro was on her usual journey home. As she walked, she looked out over the small town and sighed. Same boring place with nothing special or spectacular about it. Returning her gaze to watch her feet as she walked, she mentally went over what all she needed to get done that night. She had some homework due the next day, but that was no big deal. Despite her constant cynical state of mind, Chihiro refused to let her grades suffer. Her intellect was the only thing she could count on to make her feel special, being that she was on of the top students in her class.

Trudging up the steps to her
house, she sighed. It felt as if this day was never going to end, regardless of the fact that she was finally home. She could hear her mother in the kitchen cooking, her father was probably still at work. She walked upstairs to her room after checking in with her mother, thankfully shedding herself of her heavy backpack. She quickly changed into her pajamas and glanced outside of her window to look at all the other houses on her neighborhood. They all were so uniform, identical to her own home. It only added to her feeling of melancholy.

One particular building caught her eye, though. There was this one old empty house that resided on a hill just at the end of the road. She'd sometimes stare at it, almost feeling a sense of relation to the dormant and meaningless house. It reminded her of herself. Tonight there was something off, however; She could make out the tiniest of light coming from it's windows, as if someone was living inside of it. This struck her as odd, being that the house had been condemned due to safety hazards and the occasional ghost story that floated around about it. Surely her eyes were playing a trick on her...

Somehow the house looked slightly better. At least to the point where it wouldn't collapse in on itself. Haku smiled, this place would work well enough for his new home in this strange world. Although he did wish there was a river nearby, it would make it feel so much more like home.

During a break he had made his voice deeper to enroll in the school, the teachers were a bit confused, they mentioned how strange it was to transfer now of all times, but Haku simply told them that it was due to being relocated for a job. They quickly nodded and added Haku down to the list, after he forged a test to get in. It "magically" got there and they told him with Haku's grades he would be good to go. Haku had based his intelligence off of Chihiro's. He wanted to be put into a class with her in it. It would be so much easier to find her if that happens.

They had been working all day. Well, at least until the sun started to go down. Haku began to make food for everyone considering they all worked hard. After he finished apparently the spirits decided that they would be the ones to clean the dishes. Haku nodded and went up to the room that he claimed. He turned on a light and opened up the window to let some fresh air in. He saw a lot of houses from where he was. He hoped that one of the closer ones was Chihiro's.

With a cocked eyebrow as she stared harder at the house, Chihiro was jolted from her concentration at her mother's voice. "Chihiro~! Dinner's ready!" She called out. In that moment, the smell of ramen wafted through the house and into her room. "Coming." She replied, ripping her eyes from her window finally.

Upon entering the dining room, she noted that her dad must have gotten home right after she did since he was already sat at the table, but still had his work clothes on. "Hi dad." She greeted before sitting down, her mother setting the table for them all. Just as she was about to dig in, her mom stopped her. "Chihiro, did you hear that you're getting a new transfer student in your class? Your dad just got the email from your principal." She informed her. Ah, right, her dad did work at her school after all. "It was pretty last minute as well, from what I understood." Her father grunted in confirmation.

Chihiro looked at him weirdly. A transfer student at this time of the year? It was almost unheard of! Maybe she should check into this strange new student, they could possibly entertain her for a little bit. She had an overwhelming feeling that something important would happen tomorrow upon meeting this person, but perhaps she was just getting her hopes up. Things like this did happen; She'd be having a pretty good time and then, as if she was cursed, something would come in and ruin her whole day and trump whatever happiness she had felt. In order to prevent these bouts of pitfalls that occurred caused by misleading, joyful events, she had began to stop herself from getting too excited or allowing herself to indulge in good things anymore. She believed this would only lead to bad things happening again, and she could only handle that so many times before she'd ultimately break down completely.

Haku had grown rather excited about going to school tomorrow. Despite thinking that most humans probably dreaded going to school. He gasped realizing that he needed a uniform. He left the window open and quickly began to walk around town. He found a few buildings that he thought were schools, but sadly they weren't.

He continued to walk when he finally found the school. There were still some students around and he went to the office and asked about school uniforms. They gave him a strange look, saying that it needs to be bought at "this" store. They wrote it down and handed it to him. They asked where his father was and Haku quickly replied, "He's . . . at work." and then quickly left to avoid anymore awkward encounters.

It took forever to find this store. However he quickly got the uniform. The spirits had slipped some money into his pocket. He made a mental note to thank them later. He began to walk back when he couldn't help but look for Chihiro's house. He tried to not be too suspicious, but he was pretty sure he looked rather out of place. He could just tell everyone he was taking the scenic route back to his home.
