The first snowfall is always a celebration in Hawkley, and what better to celebrate than with a festival! With vendors, rides, carnie food, games, and a beer tent the town can all gather up at at the Sun Valley Lodge for the winter festivities.

Braxton Jensen

The lightly falling snow landed gracefully against the cool ground, upbeat music of the latest pop stars seemed to echo off the surrounding vendors and carnival rides that littered the common area outside the lodge. Along the outer edge of the perimeter was where the Jensen family had their annual sleigh rides set up for service, once through the main gate you stayed along the carnival fencing to the right and past a few of the games that were lined up to drain poor parents pockets there was a break in the fencing and a large wooden sign that read in bold font "Jensen Ranch Sleigh Rides" Stepping through the opening in the fence and looking to the right there was an older ford pickup parked along the fence with a three horse trailer attached to it, the polished steel and Christmas garland that hung around the windows brought a sense of nostalgia and calmness to the atmosphere. A taller man about 6'1 stepped out of the trailer, dragging a large black gelding behind him. The horse followed calmly as its ears were forward and his head level with the mans shoulder. Braxton turned to tie the horse to the side of the trailer, dark brown cowboy boots scuffed and worn tracked back into the trailer to collect another beast and this one was a bit more lively. Snorting and stomping its way out into the crisp winter breeze this red roan gelding held his head high with anticipation, ready to get to work. Cooing softly to the second gelding Braxton raised a leather gloved hand to stroke the horse's nose in an attempt to get his attention for a mere moment while he lead him to one of the two sleighs that were positioned by the entrance to their area. Braxton had been preparing these few animals for their jobs this weekend for the past two weeks, Luckily Coal the large black gelding who was brought out of the trailer first was a veteran of the job and knew exactly how this worked, Theo the younger red roan had only done this a handful of times and any job seems to get this young guy excited.

While Braxton was tending to the last few details of harnessing the eager animal a family friend, Tim had stopped by to lend a helping hand before his younger brother showed up. Tim removed the last horse from the trailer, another horse who was familiar with this who would stand quietly and do their job without a fuss. A lovely palomino mare who would be a back up incase one of the other two got tired out. The Jensen family had two sleighs, one held about six people where as the second could hold about eight. Upon harnessing the young gelding, Braxton moved back over to the trailer, to fetch Coal who was actually Braxton's personal horse. Tim had dropped a bale of hay in between the two horses and they were happily munching away while Braxton had been occupied although it would be short lived for Coal as Braxton untied him and moved him over to the larger sleigh. Coal was a mixed breed 50% Draft horse and 50% American Quarter Horse which meant he was a bit larger than the other two and he could handle the larger capacity. Once both horses were hitched to each sleigh Braxton then began to hang garland from the top rails of the sleighs and for the final touches he place two sets of bells on each of the horses harnesses to get that familiar sleigh bell ring.

A slight breeze picked up in the air as the carnival began to fill with towns people, many young families and even some seniors here an there. General Admission to the carnival itself covered the Sleigh Ride Fee as the Jensen family was able to work out a deal with the carnival manager as it was one less thing for them to have to worry about. Finally enough people had piled into Braxton's sleigh so without delay he gave the reins a soft flick and they were off! the route circled the outside of the carnival but then it dips into the forest for just a moment to change direction and loop back around. Soft chatter behind the bench was hard not to get distracted by sometimes, one woman was complaining of her dying cat and another boasting about how she had scored one of the worlds largest turkey's for their family dinner. Braxton sometimes could only roll his eyes to himself as he carried on steering them through the snow, Coal would breathe deep and heavy so you could see the steam protruding from his nostril with every exhale.
The large snowflakes still descended delicately as they began to stick to the equines backside and in his long mane that stretched down his neck. Finally returning to the loading area Braxton held the reins with one hand, using his free one to pat snow off his shoulders and removing his black cowboy hat to swipe the snow off it as well, dark blue jeans that were neatly pulled over his boots were slightly damp as they returned to the truck and trailer. Slowing the horse to a halt, Braxton stepped off the sleigh and handed the reins to Tim who had been tending to the horses while Braxton drove "Tim please help the next group get loaded, I am going to go slip on my snow pants so I don't have to worry about damp clothes" With a light chuckle Braxton moseyed his way into the trailer and pulled his snow pants on over his jeans. Zipping up the black duck lined Carhartt jacket he then moved back outside to take the reins once more, Luckily just as he had sat down he noticed his brothers white dodge pickup pulling up next to his truck and trailer "Finally" he thought quietly to himself as the last few people climbed aboard

Danae looked out of the window of her taxi as she entered the town of Hawkeye. It was a long journey to make it here, several hours on a plane to the nearest city then a short train journey and taxi ride. With all the snow coming down, it was a miracle she had made it to the town with all the delays and slow-downs she had noted as she travelled. She was running on adrenaline through it all and what horrible airplane food she was force-fed, both were running out and she was working on fumes. Worse now she was getting the old urge to drink just as the feeling hit her that she had arrived at what would be her new home for a while. Nerves and boredom were the worst feelings for someone like her. Still, the snow was beautiful to watch, and she caught a glimpse of the fair that was set up in the town. The lights, sounds and activities proved to be a great distraction.

"Driver, you can stop here." She instructed the driver. She was meant to go directly to her cousin's ranch outside the town, but she thought she could use a little walk through what the town had to offer. He had heard one of her cousins was running on of the attractions so she was sure she could run into him at some point and at least, she had one of their numbers. She took one of her pills when the taxi stopped before paying the driver before stepping out. Her left leg first before slowly and carefully and gingerly set town her prosthetic right leg next to it. Snow and ice were a new, unique challenge to her, and she had to practice it sometime. She wore the best traction footwear and had brought along her cane to aid her effort in the snow. She took a deep breath as she lifted herself up to stand. The taxi driver was quick to come by her side, but she did not need it, a little slip from her prosthetic, but she managed.

She thanked that driver, picked up her bag and began a few slow ginger steps forward before finding a little more of her confidence and she walked as confidently as she could towards the man stalls of the festival. She could smell all the treats on offer and was tempted to partake. She cracked and picked out some fresh hot chocolate a stall was brewing, there was caramel flavouring in it which she loved. She was going to buy more, but she could only carry one thing. She took the cup and sipped t slowly, feeling it warm her almost immediately. She was used to the cold and had prepared for it dressed up heat to stomach in wool she did not really realize how cold she was until she felt herself warm up. She took a deep breath and moved on trying to see what she could learn from the food prepares.

It was so loud. Marlowe really didn't care for events like this, never had. It was all so... overwhelming. It was like someone was rubbing salt into a cut, but she conceded that was how she felt about all large public events, this one wasn't all bad, she could usually escape somewhere quiet after a little, but until then the the tables were always sticky and kids ran into her and it just wasn't that fun, especially around people you hate.

She really just wanted to be home and read right about now, but noooooo. Her family had to drag her along. She was thankful that most of them had left to do activities alone. The boys pairing off to do something she assumed was sporty and stupid, Aurora with her friends, and her Parents off with Hunter.

There always seemed to be someone dragging her along though, and today? She was unlucky. Today, Octavia had dragged her into some line for a ride she didn't even bother looking at because her preppy little friends weren't there yet.

The ride was a tall Ferris wheel Marlowe very much dreaded going on, she tried not to bring it up in casual conversation, but she was very very afraid of heights. After one too many times falling out of trees and rolling down tall snowy hills she’d freak out when high up. Actually, that's probably why Octavia chose it, she'd probably laugh if Marlowe started crying. Ugh. Dealing with Octavia made her want to blow up her house sometimes. Actually all the time. With Octavia in it. Marlowe huffed and crossed her arms.

Octavia was worse than any high-up place any day. Marlowe would proudly admit she couldn't stand Octavia at all, especially around her friends, not only were they snitches, they were also bullies. Her main ones all throughout school, including now. They always had something to say to her and Marl really couldn't do anything about it, no matter how annoying it was.

Octavia was also the only thing keeping her from getting away with everything she wanted to do. She was the one who outed her sexuality to the whole homophobic family during Thanksgiving two years ago, who told everyone that she'd been the one to break the fridge at age 11, and any other big incident that she got in trouble because of. Marlowe thanked the heavens when she got to move out of their shared room into the attic even if it was a bit colder and more stuffy.

Marlowe had dressed warmly today, if there was one thing she liked about winter, it was the fact that she could layer up clothes to her heart's content. She looked like Adam Sandler in the summer much to her chagrin and embarrassment. She just couldn't stand the feeling of clothes sticking to her in the heat.

The snow meant sports though, and that meant utter hell for Marlowe. Constant bickering and TV and sports practice that she had to take others to, and now even worse— a baby hoisted onto her. Of course, she'd avoid most of that, Libraries were a thing, school was a thing, and so was her job. The rest of the time not filled by those three things could be filled with her friends.

She was thankful that the Coffee shop took up so much of her time; the large number of hours was a nice excuse to get away. The hustle and bustle of work and people that didn't notice her were relaxing, plus the free coffee. Though it wasn't actually free. She actually just stole it, but she had contributed a lot to their business, so Marlowe reasoned that she was in the right; half of their profits were because of her, after all!

Marlowe paused and looked around the line, eyes widening as she realized Tavia had left her alone in the line, presumably to meet up with friends, abandoning her when they were about two people from the front! God fucking damn it.

Marlowe let out a small noise of distress as the two people in front of her got into the ride. It's not like she could leave right? That'd be weird and bad and— Marlowe did not like heights, she should have said no in the first place! God why was she so stupid, this was idiotic! It was her sister's stupid fault and her idiotic cowardice! She was going to die right here right now, she was going to be struck down with lightning, and she deserved it!

The ride conductor looked her up and down, “Two at a time.” There was an edge of ice and exhaustion to his voice that Marl was familiar with. She blinked, and her shoulders relaxed from where they had tensed in her panic. Thank God. She didn't actually have to go on the death trap that was the Ferris wheel. Marlowe’s nose scrunched slightly, “Oh. Well I, uhm… I'll just go.”

Marlowe stumbled over her words for a moment before taking her first step away from the line looking at the people behind her she made eye contact with the most problematic person she'd ever met and who'd been right behind her this entire time and had probably heard Octavia make fun of her for tripping and sliding down their whole driveway as the first ice of the season came in. Ughhhhh… She smiled awkwardly and knew she'd have to awkwardly run away. Better to avoid all this!

Ice. Cold. Midday. All things Dakota noticed as she stirred awake, face stuffed into her silk pillowcase, slightly drooling. The world was biting at her, the sun pricking her eyes, or maybe that was tears. November. It was here already.

She was so not ready for another year to go by; she still felt 17 really. Just a kid. Now that she was Harvey's age, it made things worse. At least when she was younger, he had felt like an adult when he'd died. Now though? He was a kid just like her. He was such a good kid.

It was worthless thinking about things like that in the end, it just wound up being annoying, and she didn't wanna deal with that shit any more than other people did.

Beetle jumped up on her chest, the large old orange cat meowing into her ear demandingly. Moth would likely be around her feet somewhere and hopefully didn't choke and die on something while she slept. Ugh, they wanted food.

She loved them but they could get run over for all she cared when they woke her up like this. The slight headache didn't help. She hadn't been too drunk the night before, but she still ended up a bit hungover, which would be a pain in the ass when she had to go out with Gwen.

Dakota sat up slowly and walked over to the TV in her room; she kept the cat food in the cupboard underneath it and grabbed a cup for both the cats' bowls. As they did every morning, they greeted the world with their screaming, yowling meows for food. Kota was used to it.

Once the cats were fed and watered and content with life once more, Dakota was allowed to get on with her shitty life. Kota grabbed the ibuprofen on her desk, went to the kitchenette, and opened the fridge— empty save for a gallon of orange juice that she was unsure was just orange juice and a couple of eggs.

She could probably find some granola bars somewhere in her room, but why bother? She took a swig of juice to swallow. Kota closed the door after taking a few more swigs so she could down the pain relief pills.

She caught her own reflection in the mirror over the stove, and she grimaced, mascara blotched under slightly red eyes, lipstick smeared onto her cheek and onto her teeth, and hair that stuck up in multiple places.

Dakota sighed deeply. All her clothes were practically all over her floor, and she really didn't want to get ready today. She wasn't going anywhere important. She wasn't doing anything important today. Just the festival. With Gwen.

...She sat down at her vanity. She really didn't wanna look bad in front of Gwen. What would she even say to her? That she was a messy, drunk idiot? Not that Gwen wouldn't know. Everyone knew. This was the last straw of decorum she held onto.

She sighed, wiping off the makeup gently, cleansing her skin, all the damn steps that kept her hot. Just because she was a mess didn't mean she'd be caught lacking in the looks department. It was the only good thing about her, after all.

She brushed out her lengthy hair, flattening down the more curly parts of her hair before pulling a cute outfit on and then applying new makeup. Mascara, eyeliner, lipgloss, all those things. She smirked at herself and posed a little in the mirror before she sighed and let herself fall back on the large bed that filled most of the one-bed, one-bath apartment.

She wasn't even all that pretty; she shouldn't be smug. She was just a selfish woman, like everyone else said about her. She shook the self-pitying thought out of her head. All this was bullshit. She'd be better off thinking of anything else. Kota shivered slightly as she got used to the colder outfit she had put on.

It was so damn cold in her room. If the landlord had turned off the heat again, she was going to kill him or at least threaten to call the police again.

No wonder this place couldn't keep tenants no matter how affordable it was, this was dumb, if she wasn't going to be booted to the streets by anyone else because of how little she could afford, she would be gone so quick... Right after she got his ass legally beaten because of the many, many code violations she'd seen, of course.

Until she got rich and famous, she'd have to be here because there was no way a person like her could make any cash and no way she'd live with her parents.

Dakota didn't care about how much money she made. Everyone else did, though. Well, by everyone, she meant her parents, and they could fuck right off, thanks. What would they expect her to do? She had shit grades, a shit attitude, and no ambitions. Well, other than completing the ones her brother had, and those were just... Not gonna happen.

She sighed and pulled her many blankets over her as Beetle jumped on the bed to join her, curling up next to one of her arms. What was she gonna do about anything anyway? It was all worthless, and nobody got it. They all looked at her like she was something to hate or pity. She knew better than them anyway; they meant nothing to her. Nothing at all, she'd try to convince herself futilely.

Too many people had been bothering her lately, texting her, reconnecting. They could all just screw themselves silly. Well, some of them. The rest were okay. Like Gwen. Who'd probably be knocking at her door any time now to drag her to a festival.

Who even goes to those? But there might be drinks, so... it might be worth it. Dakota hummed. At least Gwen would be having fun even if she wasn't. It'd been a while since they'd hung out like they would today...

Dakota smiled it'd be better than most days alone at least.

MELISSA VAUGHN
Melissa hated this. Hated that her sister dragged her out, hated that she was missing practice because they cancelled it, and hated that her sister ditched her at this festival within the first ten minutes of arriving. She seriously didn't understand why the mayor chose to run this festival every year, when it literally snows every year. It was almost just as stupid as Christmas, Thanksgiving, or literally any other holiday. What made yearly events so appealing anyway? She never truly understood. Whether it was because of her own familial issues where practicing was more important than celebrating, or she just truly didn't understand such festivities, but either way Melissa was cold and miserable. And most likely wouldn't be happy again until her skates were on and she was on the ice.

Watching as Sage's blonde hair disappeared into the crowed, Melissa took a look around. Everyone was smiling and enjoying themselves as they indulged in the games and the hot chocolate being passed around. The smell of the fried foods and screaming children were beginning to give her a headache. Which is probably why her feet were taking her in a different direction of the festival. She needed to get away, but if she were to go home, her mother would only make her work out or even take her to the outdoor rink to practice despite the mayors request to have everyone join in on the fun. Well, this was not fun. No matter where she decided to go.

The cold nipped away at her skin, even through the parka that she worked hard to buy. But, she pushed past the cold and trudged through to the outer limit where the crowed began to thin and jumped a little as a horse and sleigh passed by. Did they do that every year? Or had she just been so blissfully unaware of her surroundings. That wouldn't surprise her if that was the case, because even now, her mind was always on what her next routine would be or how she would get to the Olympics. Looping around, she followed the crowed to where they seemed to be getting in line for the sleigh rides and leaned against a fence just out of bounds. Where the beautiful creature would pass by once it made its loop around. It's a lot to say, that this is the most entertainment that she would be getting from this festival. But, she enjoyed the view and the horse making its rounds seemed to take her mind off of the stress that the senior skate tests were bringing her.

Winter was Julia Cunningham's least favorite time of year. Why? It brought in all the winter sports fanatics from all across the globe. And, if anyone knew anything about Julia, they would know that winter sports were her mortal enemy. The Snowfall Festival was just another excuse for those gremlins to overtake the town. But, of course, her parents were part of that cursed group who craved more of that horrible season - and so here she was, reluctantly dragging her feet behind Lewis and Frances, who were eagerly approaching a booth full of seasonal trinkets. Her arms were firmly crossed in front of her chest, and a scowl had found its permanent place upon her lips. This was so uncool. As soon as she graduated high school next spring, she'd be out of here as fast as her legs could take her. Hawkley was a death sentence to her. She didn't know how her parents had fallen in love with this place, stubbornly refusing to pack up and get the hell out of Dodge after all of these years. There wasn't much to do here, and she was surrounded by the same losers she had grown up with on a day-to-day basis. Julia didn't care where she ended up after here - anywhere would be better than in dumb ol' Hawkley, USA.

If it would have been any other event taking place, perhaps Julia would have been in a better mood today. But since it was the first snowfall of the year, there was no chance of her mood going from bad to good. God, this town made her want to rip her hair out. Not that she would, of course - she took pride in her bleach blonde hair. Not one strand was ever out of place on top of her angelic head. But Julia was far from being an angel, and everyone who knew her knew that. Nah, Julia preferred to start superficial arguments for her own amusement. Not that she ever did that with her parents - who, in fact, had picked up on their only daughter's annoyance about being here. "Jules, you don't have to stick around while we shop if you don't want to. I know, hanging around with your old, unhip parents isn't your idea of fun. Your mother and I are sure you'd much rather spend some time with your friends. Here's some money, go enjoy the festival on your own." Her father had given her an out. Thank God. He reached into his back pocket, retrieving his wallet before taking two crisp Andrew Jackson's from within and handing them over to Julia. But before she could make her great escape, it was her soft-spoken mother who spoke up this time. "Meet us in the parking lot at closing time, okay? Text us if you're going to be running late."

"Of course, Mom. Thank you." And before either one of them could get another word out, Julia was gone, slipping into the crowd as quickly and as quietly as she could. If she had any rebel streak in her, then she surely would have ditched the festival altogether. But she didn't know where she would go, and she'd probably be outed to her parents for skipping out on the rest of the festival anyway. So she stayed put, much to her own chagrin. How would she spend the rest of the day? She scanned the fairgrounds, looking for something that could pass the time. And then she saw it - the Ferris wheel, looming over the center of the fair. Julia wasn't scared of heights - in fact, she loved riding roller coasters and the like every time her parents took her to Disney World in the summer. And if she could stomach Space Mountain, a little ol' Ferris wheel would be the least of her concern. So she made her way over to the line poking out of the designated queue, right behind the back of an all-too-familiar blonde. Julia was lucky that Marlowe didn't turn around as the line trickled to the front. And, just in case she did, Julia pulled out her phone, her black marbled phone case resting against the back of her palms. She immediately got to scrolling Instagram, for if she would be confronted by Marlowe, at least she could claim that she had been distracted by a thirst trap posted by one of her celebrity crushes. It was worth a try.

Her attention snapped back up to the ride attendant, who had (rudely) turned Marlowe away for being a single rider. Now, Julia could have easily laughed and watched her sulk away, but seeing as she herself would be turned away for being a single rider, she decided that she was going to take action. She made eye contact with Marlowe, who gave a sheepish smile. Julia knew what she had to do. She lightly shoved Marlowe to the side before stepping toe to toe with the attendant, her eyes filled with a burning rage. Now, she was only 5'2, and the guy was easily a foot (or more) taller than her, but that still didn't stop her from giving him a piece of her mind. "Oh, hell no. Nobody's going to stand around here and tell me that a single rider can't go on this ride. Let me guess, turning away girls like her and I gives you a rush, doesn't it? Are you getting your sick kicks from this? Probably so. That's probably why you're pushing 40 and still living in your parents' basement. You're a fucking disgusting excuse of a man, and I'm not wasting a single second on you any longer. Come on, Marlowe, we're going on." And with that, Julia took Marlowe by the hand, practically dragging her onto the carriage with her. "Fuckin' asshole." she muttered under her breath as she buckled herself in. "Who does he think he is, telling us what we can and can't do?" Julia glanced over at Marlowe. "You good?"

Zander Jensen

Late ... Zander!

Jolting awake from almost a dead slumber, hazel eyes danced around the room in a panic as he could hear his mother shouting from below Late? Oh sh-t Braxton is going to beat me to a pulp this time for sure Springing into action the younger Jensen boy rose to his feet and started rummaging through dresser drawers, a simple pair of light wash jeans with his worn cowboy boots, a simple black t-shirt followed by a black tattered old hoodie and his thick dark denim winter coat. Flying down the stairs, skipping one at a time every other step he landed on the main floor with a thud, his petite red headed mother stood by the door with her arms folded over her chest "Zander you KNEW this was happening today" She started with a very stern tone to her voice as she side stepped so he could head past her to the front door and with a small sigh he looked to her, running a hand through his tousled blonde locks "I know and that is why I am trying to hurry and get my arse in gear!" Zander then grasped his own black cowboy hat from a hook near the door and placed it on his head before brushing past his mother. Once outside it was almost something out of a movie, the ground had a light dusting of snow laying over the surface, large snowflakes falling almost effortlessly as he made his way toward his truck, glancing over his shoulder to see the two younger German shepherds watching over the herd of cattle that huddled next to the barn. Normally the family took the two younger dogs with them everywhere but it was a bit cold to have them out laying in the cold with no shelter available at the festival so Zander opted to leave them home. They did have a third shepherd but she was a cranky old woman who preferred the solitude of her own property and familiar faces, strangers were not something she was interested in.

Leaping up into the cab of his older dodge pickup he inserted the key into the ignition and gave it a crank, on the first turn the engine came roaring to life and Zander was swiftly making his way out of the driveway. Upon reaching the main road he began to get a small sense of butterflies in his stomach, he had mentioned meeting up with Lani but he never thought she would actually want to hang out with him. Zander and Lani had been friends for awhile but more so to the point of just saying hello when conveniently in the same area, however they had recently spoken a bit more and Zander was able to shoot his shot in asking her to maybe hang out for a little at the festival. NEVER DREAMING that she would actually agree to go with him, he was rather shocked at first but then his nerves began to take over him what would they even do?! The drive was less time than Zander would have liked as he reached the Lodge, multiple vehicles parked outside the gates but he was able to sneak around the side to where they had their services set up. Upon parking his truck he could already see Braxton watching him as he climbed back up into the sleigh. He is going to curse me out Zander shut the truck off and climbed out of the vehicle to head over to Tim however he stopped real quick to grab his gloves out of the back seat of his vehicle.

The festival air was filled with sugar, beer and a small amount of horse manure if you were hanging around their side of the fence. Braxton had just started off with his second group of people but made sure to holler at him as they went by "You get to drive Theo today since you were late!" Zander chuckled a little and wave a gloved hand as the sleigh passed him, walking over to Tim who was attempting to calm the red roan gelding whom chomped at the bit to get going, he had been standing long enough. Zander took the reins from Tim and gave him a small smile "Thank you for being here Tim" With that he gave the reins a small flick and a light clucking sound to the horse and he was off, Zander pulled the reins back tight as Theo took off into an eager trot. Making the sleigh do a small loop in their area to attempt to calm the horse down he noticed a woman standing along the fence by herself maybe she was just trying to escape all the hustle and bustle of things herself. Upon bringing the horse around to the fence line he halted to allow passengers to board while he waited he took in the surroundings, they had the lodge all decorated nicely and the festival grounds had sweet candy canes lining the walk ways and many of the vendors had their stands wrapped in garland and christmas lights. With a wave of Tim's hand Zander once again gave the cue to get moving, Theo jumped at the chance to get going but he wasn't as hot headed this time, he kept a faster paced walk this time but he still managed to chomp at the bit. Zander was going to have to mention to Braxton that he would be stepping away for a little while later to meet up with Lani and here was to hoping that his older brother wouldn't be to much of a hard arse on him. The sky was beginning to clear off as the falling snow began to taper off, only falling every so often when the wind picked up.​
 
SAGE VAUGHN
Sage only came to this thing because she knew her 'friends' would all be here. With practice cancelled and the rink closed to the festival, there wasn't much else to do. Somehow, she managed to convince her sister to drive her, which was nice because the chilly air would have most definitely froze her to death by the time she even walked to the festival (okay, not really, she's just dramatic). With the smell of festival food mixed with hot chocolate floating through the air, Sage found the quickest opportunity to ditch her sister within the crowd of bustling festival goers.

Buttoning up the rest of her jacket, Sage pushed through the rows of people, not caring for the dirty looks she was receiving as she beelined for one of the food trucks. Not only because technically it was a break day, she could indulge a little, but because she knew one of her kinda sorta actual friends was working. Maybe she could convince him to ditch and they go get high together or something. She'd met Ezra a few months back when he was working at the food booth at the rink, and often times she'd sneak out back with him to smoke something in between sessions. While the two wouldn't seem like the types to get along, there was just something there that was odd enough that they did.

When she finally reached the area where they were selling the delicious food, Sage sighed and took a look at all the options. Funnel cakes, elephant ears, deep fried oreos... Yeah, deep fried oreos was definitely the move. So, she stood in line, tapping her foot. While she waited, she scanned the other trucks to see if she could spot Ezra, and finally she did. He of course was working for his works truck, normally a pretty decent restaurant but put it on wheels. When the oreos were secured, she happily made her way over and pushed her way to the front of the line, "If you ditch I will think about sharing these with you." She said and stepped out of the way of the protesting people.

Keys jangled in Ronnie's hand as she locked the door of her little house. Energetic barks sounded behind her as the dogs pulled on their leashes tied to a nearby pole, eager to get going, "Sit, you two mutts!" She hollered out to them as she clipped her heart-shaped carabiner back onto her belt loop, her many bracelets clanking against the keys.

Ronnie chuckled and trotted over to the pups, Foam's classic husky yells shutting off as he looked up at her happily, tapping his front paws on the ground happily. She looked down at him with a grin, rocking on her feet idly as she bent down to pet the canine. Clank looked over disdainfully and continued to try and pull away from where he was tied up.

Ronnie grabbed both dogs' lines, giving them a quick command to heel, and they trotted over with a whine on Foam's end. Ronnie knew they wanted to run, and she'd be damned if she let the two buggers drag her around just because the first snow had come, always eager to compete and run.

The two were a very compatible duo, Foam the energy and Clank the Reason. Clank was smart enough to keep Foam on track when competing, and the dog could be hellishly crafty sometimes, even though he'd only been racing for five months.

Foam was a seasoned racer, still in his prime. He had a lot of pep and wasn't very good at keeping in line outside of races, but once he was in the Zone, he'd pull the world if it meant winning.

Ronnie loved the dogs very much. They were her itty bitty babies, after all. Speaking of babies— she was gonna see Juniper today. She was very much happy with her boss for giving her some time off, though there wouldn't be much business during the festival anyway.

She got time to see her little Junebug, and that was all that mattered to her. Just like dogs, Ronnie got along with kids famously. Hell, she'd always been the go-to babysitter before she became a rowdy, troublesome teen. Those were the days, alright.

The recent breakup may have made things awkward between her and Dex, but she'd ignore that so that Juniper could still have her around; she wouldn't just abandon someone attached to her because of some feelings getting in the way. Well, at least now she wouldn't.

She wouldn't leave people like she did her parents and everyone else. Cringing, Ronnie tried not to think about that. The thought of her family already made it hard for her to sleep at night. She'd be damned if she brought it to the day, too.

Foam had already pulled ahead of her, making the leash tug on his harness. She huffed and led them down more to the festival with calm commands, telling them where to go. The competition training was practical in everyday life, more than Ronnie thought it would when she started anywho.

They'd kept in line for not too long before both pairs of ears perked to a point, Clank chuffing as they began straining left, and Ronnie groaned as she realized they smelled something and were now on a two-dog mission to find whatever in hell they'd heard or smelt. She'd be damned if she let the dogs drag her around, but those two could pull her pretty smoothly, and come hell or high water, the two would get what they wanted.

She sighed and gave in, letting the two dogs pull her as she stumbled along, it was better to get it over with quick before it went from bad to worse. She'd been shimmied through several bushes and over the hill, not too far but still annoying, before she noticed anything of interest.

Then she saw there was a vaguely familiar man a bit away from her. The dogs lurched, and Ronnie stumbled forward as they sprinted ahead, Ron barely keeping her ass off the ground as she yipped at them the command to stop, "Whoa, Easy boys!" but they tended to get excited when someone they hadn't seen in a while showed up, especially if they smelled interesting.

The dogs began yapping, their tails wagging as they ran round the man, whom she now recognized as Zander. "Whoa, Easy dogs! Heel!" The dogs finally pulled back, "Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit! These dogs are a handful! Sorry 'bout that."

Marlowe rubbed her face and looked over at Julia. Who had once again done something outrageous, crazy even! The guy was probably just tired, an average exhausted service worker, even if he was being a bit condescending to her, and Julia had like yelled at him for nothing! What the hell?

She sighed deeply and stared Julia in the eye. She couldn't do anything about it now anyway, though. She shook her head, perplexed and frustrated. Realizing there was little she could do about the situation, she answered Julia, "I'm okay. Uhhhh... How about you?" Marlowe whispered back politely.

She just had to put up with this... This bullshit. Complete and utter bull! She had to look that ride attendant in the face when she got off after that whole debacle, too... Marlowe's face reddened at the thought of the embarrassment. The entire ordeal with the ride attendant lingered in her mind like an unwelcome guest, and Marlowe found herself mentally replaying the scene.

The conflicting emotions etched on her face mirrored the chaotic whirl of thoughts inside her head before turning into utter dread as the ride creaked into motion. Realizing that she'd have to see this ride to the very end setting into her. Marlowe bit her lip, "fuuuuuuucking hell." She hissed, her long nails sinking into her palms in anxiety.

She would be fine! Just okay! Just don't look down, right...? Of course, She looked down. They weren't that high up. She was just being dramatic. She whipped her head back to Julia, "...We just got the winter selection of flavor syrups and cocos at the shop. You'd like them." Marlowe grumbled slightly, as she was prone to when talking or really doing anything at all.

She just needed not to think at all. Nope. Nothing. Blank. She was in Zen Buddha mode, and she could do this shit better than god himself; she was the most extraordinary, most relaxed person in the universe, she futilely told herself.

Julia was better than Octavia, at least. Marlowe bet even Van Gogh would cut off his other ear just to avoid being stuck in a conversation with Marlowe's sister. The one trade-off to not being with Octavia was that she couldn't cry in front of Julia.

Octavia, more often than not, was the cause of her tears, but she'd never really cried in front of the girl, and— The Ferris wheel swung a little more as it rose, and Marlowe groaned as she looked down, the world almost spinning below her. Why did she agree to this? She looked at Julia again and then outside, then at Julia, looking increasingly awkward.

As the Ferris wheel climbed higher, Marlowe's discomfort grew more palpable. She shifted to the corner of the seat, her gaze fixed on her slightly trembling hands. This whole thing was ridiculous, she thought, stealing a quick glance at the ground far below. The world looked both beautiful and terrifying from up here, and Marlowe was trying once again to ignore it all.

"Soooo uh... Winter. Snow. Not that great, yeah?" She lamely chatted, hoping to steer the conversation away from the thoughts of looming heights and onto safer conversational grounds. If she could get Julia to rant about something they both could agree on, Marlowe would be much better off in this metal death machine.

She didn't even have a reason to be this afraid! All she'd fallen off of as a kid was trees and down icy slopes! It was irrational and embarrassing, and she couldn't stand the feeling! Especially in front of people who didn't like her. Julia had probably already noticed and would make fun of her for at least a few months. Marlowe bit hard into her lip.

God, she couldn't stand this! It was cold, and she was high up, and she was going to just die up here! That'd be better than the alternative of Julia seeing her a mess, all terrified and crying. She turned her eyes to her shoes, not knowing what to say to the girl across from her.

Hopefully, the girl could just continue the conversation without her needing to do anything.

Although Gwen had given up a lot of discipline and routine after her stint at the Olympics, some habits never die. The one thing she'd consistently found herself doing was waking up early. It wasn't as extreme as it used to be; she'd once had a routine of waking up at the crack of dawn to get training in, but sleeping in was something she found herself unable to do. Without intense training or anything specific to do, Gwen still liked waking up early. It gave her much-needed time to relax by herself.

Waking up today, she was instantly excited to get up and going when she remembered her plans for the day. She'd managed to convince Dakota to come to the snowfall festival with her. Honestly, she didn't care about the festival. It was an excuse to spend some more time with one of her favorite people in town. Although they'd grown apart when Gwen got caught up in the figure skating competition world, she was back now and enjoying reconnecting with her old friend. She had fun whenever they hung out, but she did worry about Dakota; it seemed grief had a tight hold on her. She hoped getting her out and to the festival would provide a distraction; she was going to do everything in her power to make sure Dakota had some fun today.

She figured Dakota wouldn't even be awake until much later, so she spent the morning chilling and getting ready. Her vast apartment always felt absurdly empty when it was just her there. Often, she wished someone was there with her, but on a calm morning like this, it felt like a good thing. She put on some music and took her time getting ready. Face masks, makeup, trying on multiple outfits—no detail was skimmed over. Still, once she felt ready, she had plenty of time before she was supposed to pick up her friend, so she laid on her couch for a bit, scrolling aimlessly on Instagram. Though she wasn't really paying attention to the posts, she was thinking about the day ahead of her and what Dakota might like to do at the festival. She just really wanted to cheer up her friend. Maybe some carnival games would be fun? Maybe rides? If all else failed, there would be drinks there.

Glancing at the time, Gwen pulled herself out of her head and headed out of her own apartment to her car. It was cold, but as the heat kicked in and she began to drive, she felt warmth rush to her fingertips. Dakota's apartment wasn't in a nice part of town and was pretty far from her own place; she wished Kota was able to find some place nicer and safer. But she didn't mind the drive in order to get to her friend, even if she did end up flipping off a couple of idiot drivers on the way there.

She pulled up to the dingy apartment complex and found a spot on the side of the road before getting out and locking her car. Walking up to Dakota's apartment, she inspected the building. She'd only been here a couple times, but she knew this place wasn't good enough for Dakota; she'd heard that the landlord was weird and the space was unsafe. She raised an eyebrow at some nasty-looking trash on the ground as she passed it. Someone really should clean up around here.

Now at Dakota's doorstep, she gave two firm knocks at the door. "Rise and shine!" she called out, a sarcastic yet friendly tone seeping through her voice. Gwen wasn't one hundred percent sure if Dakota would even be up yet. But she figured if she was awake, she'd at least be tired and probably a little hung over, so she didn't have the highest expectations for a warm greeting.

Lani always looked forward to the snowfall festival. She'd always had a great time, the community all coming together to create a really beautiful weekend. There was something fun around every corner, the festival never lacked excitement. She'd been attending since she was a little kid, and even though she knew what was in store, she couldn't help but feel excited. The people also made the event exciting. Typically, she went with a few friends and ended up making new friends along the way. This time, she was still going with a friend, but something about it felt different.

She and Zander had known each other for a while but only recently started to talk more, getting to know each other better. When he asked if she wanted to hang out a bit at the festival, of course she said yes. She'd begun to enjoy chatting with him; he was fun and definitely made her laugh. Not that it was difficult to make Lani laugh; she was an easy audience, but there was something compelling about Zander. As she got ready for the festival, she sped through her routine, filled with energy. Even if she wasn't meeting up with Zander right away, she wanted to get over to the festival quickly. She wanted to explore, take some pictures for a while, and maybe meet some new people.

Once at the festival, she couldn't stop smiling at the vaguely familiar sights. Yeah, it changed a bit every year, but the basics remained the same. The games, rides, food stands, and other attractions filled her with joy. She wandered around a bit, taking in the scene and greeting anyone she ran into that she knew, even if she didn't really know them too well. She couldn't help but stop for some popcorn—a little treat for herself. After having her snack, she started to take pictures of the crowds, happy with how a lot of them turned out. She was even stopped by some other girls, tourists just visiting, and asked if she could take pictures for them with their phones, but she ended up taking a few with her nice-quality camera as well, promising to send them over as soon as they were downloaded.

After spending a while perusing the festival, taking photos, and making new acquaintances, she realized it was nearly time to meet up with Zander, so she began to head over to the ice sculptures like they'd agreed upon. When she got there, she didn't spot him just yet. He was probably still helping out with sleigh rides, so she took some pictures of the ice sculptures as she waited, becoming really focused on capturing the beauty of the ice.

Ezra woke up to the blaring of his alarm and was instantly annoyed. It was an awful start to his day, but most days he ended up annoyed anyway, so call his early sour mood getting right to the point. Remembering why his alarm was even set in the first place, he slowly worked his way out of bed. He was scheduled to work today, but not even at the restaurant as usual. He was scheduled to work the restaurant's food truck for some stupid festival celebrating the first snowfall or something. He'd only been in town a few months, but he knew that this festival was an annual thing. It was still stupid, though, how much community spirit this town seemed to have. He wondered how long he'd last here before he got completely bored.

When he finally managed to fully drag himself out of bed, he took a quick shower, got ready, and headed out the door. He was late, but nothing about his behavior seemed rushed. He didn't really care if he got in trouble for his tardiness. He took his sweet time driving over to the festival and even more time leaving his car to get to the food truck. It was apparent that he didn't want to be here. Making his way over to the food truck, he lazily nodded at his manager, waiting to be told what to do. "Ezra, you're late." She scolded. He scoffed in response, "Well, maybe if I was actually interested in this job, I'd show up on time." Why hadn't he been fired yet? No one knew. A little perfectly timed flirting and a little bit of free weed seemed to keep him in a good enough place with the people that mattered, though. And, if he did get fired, he always seemed to be able to bullshit his way into another job; it's just how he functioned.

Ezra worked at the front of the truck, taking orders. Eventually, the manager left them to take care of the main restaurant for a while, leaving one of the cooks in charge. As time went on, Ezra got lazier and lazier. He was giving terrible customer service and definitely rolled his eyes at customers more than once, not even trying to hide it. Most people had been in line for a while, so they were just happy to get their food order in and leave, but a couple complained and asked to speak to his manager. When they did that, he told them she wasn't here and that he could give them her phone number, then proceeded to give completely random numbers. He was bound to land the restaurant some pretty shitty Yelp reviews. Whatever.

As he went through the motions of "helping" customers, he began to get awfully bored; all he could think about was leaving. So, when Sage approached the truck and asked him to ditch (or demanded, he wasn't really sure), a tiny smirk appeared on his face before returning to his normal resting bitch face expression. "Ditch to what? Hang out with you? Sounds terrible," he scoffed. "Give me two seconds." He actually kind of liked Sage, not that he'd ever tell her that, and hanging out with her was going to be a lot better than whatever he'd be doing here for the next couple hours.

Turning away from the line, with the few people toward the front that were pissed off by Sage cutting them off now more agitated he wouldn't take their orders right away, he spoke to the one other person working the front of the house. A high school student that Ezra was pretty sure was terrified of him was calling customers' names when their orders were ready. "Hey, you can take orders and call names at the same time, yeah? You're not like, an idiot or anything, right?" He asked sarcastically, as the kid nodded quickly. "Great, cover for me then." He began to head out the back of the truck, giving a friendly nod to the cooks as he left. He actually had decent relationships with the back-of-house staff, probably due to the joints he'd shared with them on breaks behind the restaurant, so he knew he wouldn't have to worry about any of them snitching on him.

"Alright, Oreo, pleaseeee," he requested as he approached Sage, quickly snatching one out of the container and taking a bite before she could respond or protest. "So what did you want to do? Go on rides? Oooooh, did you want me to win you a teddy bear at one of those little games?" he teased. "Or, we can do the sensible thing and go get high."

Hearing the familiar engine of Zander's truck had made Braxton lift his blue eyes from the reins in his hand. As frustrating as his younger brother could be, he wasn't horribly late so Braxton decided he wouldn't give him to much grief, before sending Coal forward Braxton raised a gloved hand to his mouth to call out to his brother "You get to drive Theo for being late!" The dig was honest however Braxton had every intention on making Zander run the young gelding anyway, this was just the perfect excuse for him to have reasoning behind it. Braxton knew the response he was going to get an all it would be was a small chuckle so without any more delay's Braxton gave the reins a light flick and the black equine took to a lazy trot, hauling the old sleigh almost effortlessly through the clearing. Upon heading around the clearing to circle back to the trail Braxton noticed a woman leaning on the fence just a bit further down from where people were boarding the sleighs, taking in her features from a distance he hummed to himself quietly, maybe he would have to make small talk when he came back around by the fence.

The second trip around was almost as comical as the first, two women squawking about how a friend of theirs wasn't speaking to a certain family member and they believed it was a bit harsh especially being so close to the holidays. Braxton firmly believed that just because people were family did not give them any excuse to have a free pass from consequences due to their actions. Coal continued to heave deep breaths as they trudged their way through the snow, the sky was beginning to clear and the snow was beginning to fall slower and in much smaller quantity. As the trail continued on along the festival rail he glanced over to take in all the attractions and vendors with the smell of hot chocolate hitting his nose he declared mentally to himself that he was going to need one before the day got away from him. Dipping down into the tree's once more the sleigh creaked a little as the trail became a slight amount narrower and the tree limbs hung low with snow seated on top. Coal let out a loud snort and shook out his mane as his rather large neck rubbed against a branch or two, causing the snow to sprinkle down onto his mane and shoulders but with a toss of his head he kept moving forward as he could see the tree's clearing again to come back out onto the rail and head back towards the loading area.

On the way back towards the starting post, Zander and Theo were passing by them only a short few feet away and Theo let out a soft neigh to Coal who merely ignored the younger horse. Coal seemed to match Braxton's personality and energy the both of them were rather quiet and hard headed, stubborn with a hint of softness if you can get past the hard exterior and of course for the brute pulling the sleigh its pink peppermints and candy canes believe it or not. As the two began to come closer to the starting point, the same woman was still standing against the railing, as they grew closer Braxton seemed to recognize her a bit, Zander knew her from the lodge he was pretty sure. As the sleigh came just a few feet from her he slowed Coal to a steady walk, the bells on his harness jingled and clanged as he lifted his feet higher with anticipation. Meeting the womans eye he lifted a hand to grip the brim of his hat and he tipped his head to her in a greeting "Ma'am .." Braxtons voice was a deep husky tone but it had a small hint of softness to it as they passed her slowly, he turned in his bench seat a little to glance at her from over his shoulder and with a small glint of courage he called out to her "Are you just going to stand there or are you going to join us?" chuckling softly as they reached the opening in the fence he pulled back lightly on Coals mouth to get him to halt, allowing the passengers to dismount the ride.

Nodding to himself as the sleigh moved easily through the snow Zander knew Braxton wasn't going to be pleased with him but maybe he would be a little lighter on the growling as they were out here working the horses and enjoying the snow festival. Braxton always seemed a bite more at ease when working the horses or cattle but people were definitely not his forte. With a cluck Theo picked up his feet to trot off this time more relaxed, perking his ears forward and flaring his nostrils as they made their way around the festival. All the sounds, smells and music made Theo even more excited as they continued along the path that Braxton and Coal had created, a strong smell of hot chocolate hit Zander and he too seemed to have the same reaction as his brother, a cup would be lovely right about now considering he was rushed up until this moment he finally took a deep breath an let it out fairly slow, slumping in the bench seat a little as he glanced around him for a moment and just briefly was he able to have his butterflies subside but as he was relaxing the ice sculptures came into view not far from the railing and it all came flooding back OH GOSH Zander then began to take another breath in hopes of slowing his heart rate. Lani was such a nice young lady and Zander really hoped that she enjoyed his company today, sometimes he could be shy but he promised himself he was going to attempt to put himself out here today and be involved.

Coming into the tree line Theo was pulling on the bit slightly causing the back of the sleigh to kick outward just a smidge as they came into the small dip in the snow with a bit more speed than needed but Zander simply pulled back on the reins and spoke softly to Theo simply saying easy and he shook out his mane, heaving a heavy sigh the young gelding obeyed the command and slowed his pace for the downward slope but as they began to turn back to head out into the clearing once more, Zander had to flick the reins and Theo immediately kicked himself up into a trot to climb the small hill and emerge from the tree line to head back along the edge of the festival with everything back into view once more. Possibly after the ice sculptures Lani might like to take a ride on the sleigh? She could even sit up front with him while drove. Zander pondered to himself as he maneuvered the sleigh through the snow, Lani did enjoy photography and the horses plus the sleigh were decorated rather nice for the festival so it could definitely be a possibility that she may want to venture back this way later.

As the sleigh came closer to the starting point Zander knew he had to catch Braxton before the next load of people were set to head off. Zander brought Theo to a halt and motioned Tim over "Tim can you hold this guy for just a minute?" with a nod Tim moved to hold onto the horse as Zander stepped off to head towards Braxton's sleigh "Hey Braxton, listen I am sorry for being late this morning but I do have a favor to ask" Pausing for a moment to fiddle with his gloves "I told Lani I could meet her by the ice sculptures in about twenty minutes, would Tim be able to drive for me? I promise I will be back in an hour or so" With a boyish grin he then gave Braxton a playful, pleading grin that caused Braxton to roll his eyes in annoyance "Fine, however you are mucking up the trailer area before we leave" With that Braxton had turned away from Zander to tend to an elderly lady asking him a question, Zander held his excitement and moved back over to Tim "Hey I told someone I would meet them for a small while are you okay to drive Theo? He has calmed down now since we got him moving" Tim raised an eyebrow and then gave Zander a pat on the shoulder "Go get her boy" With a slight chuckle Zander nodded and turned to head for the break in the fence where people were entering the sleigh rides, pushing past the small crowd he managed to get into a small clearing from people however then he was met with a pair of very familiar dogs yipping and barking in front of him, with a warm smile and a small laugh he looked to Ronnie as he bent down to give the two dogs some affection "Hey Ronnie, its no problem! I am surprised they remembered me so well" Zander had a deeper toned voice but it was soft like velvet, not even a hint of huskiness to it like Braxton's. Standing up he held out a hand to Ronnie "You alright? They didn't pull you over did they?"

He doesn’t recall if he’s ever seen a horse in real life before, Caleb thinks as he leans against a chain-link fence on the far side of the festival. Across the field, he’s watching as two men tend to their horses. In his one hand, a cigarette burns close to the filter, while the other hand is busy grasping the links in the fence. He’s been standing here long enough that the winter chill has turned his face an embarrassing shade of red, and soft snow drops cover his downy brown hair. He doesn’t have enough common sense to buy a hat, yet, he supposes, as he people-watches the families that roam the fair ground, bundled up in hats, scarves, and mittens. His own hands feel chapped and raw.

One of the girls that works at the coffee shop- he doesn’t remember her name, doesn’t know anyone’s names yet- had mentioned, in an offhand way, that there would be a festival for the first snowfall of the season. Caleb hadn’t been planning on going- too much to do, he had muttered, too busy. However, the reality of it was that the morning of the festival came, and Caleb was doing nothing but deep cleaning his apartment for the fifth time since moving in three weeks ago. His mother had called, and he let it go to voicemail, like usual. He hadn’t been planning on listening to the voicemail, either, but he didn’t know how his new phone worked, and, instead of deleting it as planned, he accidentally sent it playing. His mother’s voice washed over him for the first time in months.

“Hey, sweetie. Calling to check in on you, wanted to wish you luck with the start of your internship,” pausing for a moment, before continuing, “Your father is sorry for what he said to you. We’re just worried…moving states away after- after what happened. I’m sorry too,” the last bit tagged on with a sob. “I wish you would return my calls… or at least send a text message. Let me know if you’re safe. I love you.” The voicemail rings out for a few more seconds, as if she had wanted to say more, before ending with a beep.

Caleb didn’t know what to do with that. Logically, he knew sending a short text to his mom would ease the fear she’s felt since he left with only a single call to let them know where he was going. However, a larger, selfish part of him wants to forget California ever happened. Wants to pretend that one day he woke up in Hawkely and nothing before that ever happened. His parents, unfortunately, unlucky on their part, were before Hawkely. There’s nothing they did- nothing they could have done, and Calebs chest rings with guilt. He will call them eventually. He promises himself.

He stands still against that chain-link fence for a long time. A third cigarette is stamped out into the dirt under his second-hand boots before he manages to walk into the crowd. He doesn’t know why he’s forcing himself to be here- he just knows that if he stayed home after listening to that voicemail, he would have gone mad. He shakes some snow out of his hair, and looses himself in the crowd, meandering from stall to stall, taking in the people he would be getting to know as he lives in this town.

Ronnie smiled at the man, laughing a bit, "You know how these mutts are! Darn clever critters, I tell you! Sharper than a whip and twice as sly, I swear. Always remembering faces and smells." She dusted off the blown snow on her shoulders before waving off the man's second question with a slight eye roll.

"I'm hardy and you should know it, Zander! Even if I took a tumble and landed square on my backside, I'd shake it off just fine, no cause for concern." She patted the dogs, who were now sitting obediently. Really, she could've reined them in until the mad dash they made at the end. She didn't like to discourage that natural pulling nature though. It made them good racers.

She paused before making a comment, "These two critters sure know how to keep me on my toes. How 'bout them dogs of yours? Hope they're doin' mighty fine. Wouldn't want 'em missin' out on the Skijoring Competition next month. Them two little doggies—" She motioned to the dogs winding around her legs— "are fixin' to get as much competition as your own pups can dish out." She laughed a little, there wasn't any denying that her dogs were good, but they'd never won gold or anything.

She smirked, raising an eyebrow at the man before posing her own question, "Any special plans today? Meeting up with someone, maybe? If you were tending to them sleighs with your brother, I reckon you wouldn't be out and about like this anyways." She gave a slightly teasing smirk; she loved nothing more than to pry into her friend's lives.

"Personally, I'm gonna mosey on down to the fair and spend some time with my ex— or, more like, his young 'un. Can't rightly figure what to call her now. Ex-Stepkid, maybe? Well, don't much matter now, anyhow." She shrugged.

Ronnie turned her arm to look at the little watch on her wrist, cringing at the time, "Well, shoot, I reckon I gotta get going on now. Apologies for the quick exit, can't be late you know? The little one can throw a real fit if I don't show up on the dot. Gotta keep her from gettin' too riled up." She smiled, giving the man a pat on the shoulder before waving her arm in a small goodbye.

"We oughta spend more time together, shoot me a text when you get a chance, ya hear?" She called to him as she walked towards the fair. The dogs, now satisfied with their little reunion, followed close behind, finally obedient. She patted their head, humming as her boots sunk through the snow.

It wasn't long before she reached the food stalls the festival had set up— She assumed they'd get a snack before playing any games. Ronnie didn't like big scenes like this, but for her little Junebug, she didn't mind. Ronnie's eyes scanned around. Finding a small bench, she sat down happily, dogs pooling at her feet.

It really was quite awkward to be around Dex. It had only been a few short months since they had broken up after all, but she didn't hold the man's feelings for her against him; he was a good man.

It was just the fact that after she had her realization about her orientation, she had also come to terms with the fact that attention and love from men had always felt uncomfortable even though she'd ignored it. She had loved Dex sure, he was a good friend, and she'd keep him in her life.

Ronnie sighed slightly, looking at the bright midday sky, pulling out her phone to text Dex, telling him she'd gotten to the festival and where she'd be waiting for them.

SAGE VAUGHN
Sage new the little smirk is what reeled Ezra in to ditch. He, at least in her opinion, could never say no to her. As he agreed and went back to his bitchy self, Sage moved to stand near the back of the food truck, humming to the music playing from one of the many stands as she waited. He, of course, took his sweet ass time but eventually when he found her he snatched up one of her Oreo's as if she hadn't boughten them to share. But, she let him believe himself to be a little thief.

As he shuffled through the option of what they could do, she feigned confusion, like she was thinking about all their options. But then the idea hit her, "well, we could go get high, then do all of the above." She said, walking backwards towards the woods while she talked so she could face him, "I think trying to win a teddy bear would be a total failure with smoking first." She joked, a grin on her lips as she turned back around so they could disappear for a bit. She didn't care about smoking around people at parties but if there was any chance her mom or coach saw her, then she would be dead.

When the Oreo's were finished, she looped her arm through his and walked with him until they were out of sight from everyone at the fair. In the trees it seemed colder, without the heat of the food trucks and the space heaters from the games. So, she huddled closer to him while she let him have the duties of rolling one. "I'm surprised you didn't ditch sooner." She said with a smile and scooped it from him as she lit it up, taking a long pull from it. "But I also wouldn't be surprised if you showed up completely late either. Did you steal you from there when you just got there?" She asked, deliberately standing close.

This is how they were though, the flirting, the tension, the only two people in the world who hate people the most but tolerate each other the most. Which is why Sage has never tried anything with him. It wouldn't work, even if he was probably the only person in town who knew who she truly was (no thanks to the drunk or high nights spent cuddled up next to him while she hid her impairment from her mom). They just, meshed well. In a town who everyone knows how he is like, and no one knows how she truly is. Passing the joint off to him she finally leaned against him as the substance hit her brain.

Melissa just stood, and watched the many rounds that the horses were taking. She didn't know why it was so niuce to watch, and she didn't know why she didn't want to join. She was just about to walk away when she heard the sleigh pull up and the jingle of horses slowed by her. Sticking her hands in her pockets she turned back around and put on the smallest smile as Braxton spoke. She knew him, or his family rather, 'Are you going to join us?' he asks and she doesn't bother to try and hide the smile.

While everyone loaded off the carriage, Melissa slowly approached and smiled up at the driver, "hey Jensen." She said, referring to the same nickname she used for his brother at the lodge. But, mostly it was because she couldn't remember his first name, "so.. a ride huh? You sure I won't send the horses kicking and screaming?" She asked as she calmly approached Coal, gently running her hand along his snout. In response she watched the horse tip his nose down before she circled back to the carriage and climbed in, pulling some cash out of her pocket as she handed it to Braxton, "I'll join for one." She told him and leaned her back against the bench.

Maybe the ride wouldn't be so bad. Maybe it would take her mind off missing practice and the tests coming up. The familiar ache in her head stung. Which, was usually only caused when she was stressing about skating, and has only been happening since the accident. With a shake of her head, she pinched her eyes closed and placed her hand over to try and subside the pain. With the cold air rushing down the back of her coat and the soft jingle from the horse it eventually went away and she peered back up at Braxton, unsure of what to say but simply enjoying the peace of the ride that he was providing, "how often does your family do these kinds of things?" She asked, finally breaking the silence.

Julia had no regrets about giving that guy a piece of her mind. All she was doing was sticking up for herself and Marlowe, and she knew that she was in the right here. She had never seen a line attendant deny anyone the opportunity to go on a ride alone before, and quite frankly, she didn't believe that a measly Ferris wheel would be hindered by someone riding one of its carriages by their lonesome. She didn't care about this guy's feelings. She could have gone full Karen and demanded to speak to his boss. But she was feeling nice today, and he was lucky to get off with a warning. Nobody fucked with Julia Cunningham - nobody.

She could tell that she had maybe gone too far based on Marlowe's silent reaction. But there was no turning back now. Her meltdown was over and done now, and she couldn't take back the harsh words that had come out of her mouth. Marlowe's voice was nearly inaudible as she answered Julia's question, posing a question of her own. "Me? I'm still a bit irritated by that guy's audacity, but other than that, I'm fine." Julia had the right to defend herself. And that was exactly what she had done. If anyone had anything to say about it, she didn't care. It was her American right, and she would fight to no end to protect it. Julia didn't think about what would happen after the ride was over - she knew that she would have to see the attendant once she got off of the ride, but she was going to hold her head high and walk out of there with dignity.

The Ferris wheel groaned as it began its ascent. Julia knew that it had been hastily assembled for the Snowfall Fest, but she didn't fear anything bad happening here. She was too lucky to die in a freak accident, that was for sure. Her eyes drifted over to Marlowe seated beside her as she visibly appeared to be frightened. "Don't worry, it's going to be all over soon." She wasn't used to having to comfort anyone, and it felt stiff coming out of her mouth. Julia knew that she probably wasn't helping her case here, but she couldn't just stay silent now. It would probably do more harm than help. Thankfully, however, the conversation veered away from Marlowe's fears to her workplace. "As if I'd ever go grab a coffee from anywhere else but Starbucks." Julia snapped, a bitter seething in her voice. But after a few moments of silence, she quickly followed it up with a quieter "...unless you've got some gingerbread syrup in stock."

That was just the way that their not-so-friendship worked. Marlowe would say something, Julia would loudly disagree so that everyone knew they weren't on good terms, but then secretly she'd walk it back and everything would be okay. Julia swung her legs back and forth as she watched them leave the ground slowly but surely. Heights weren't a big deal to her. Besides, it gave her a way to pass the time while she was stuck at this dumb thing. At least she wasn't still dragging her feet behind her parents. She was actually interacting with someone her own age. And, speaking of Marlowe, Julia's ears perked up when she began to talk once more. "If we didn't live in this tourist trap hellhole, I think I'd actually enjoy winter. But of course we've got to be trapped here." She sighed, running a hand through her perfect beach waves. "If I could have been born anywhere else on this Godforsaken Earth, I'd have chosen it in a heartbeat. But you know my parents love Hawkley. How embarrassing." It didn't occur to her that the Ferris wheel was slowing to a stop at the very top of its tracks. It also didn't occur to her that it wouldn't move again for a long time.

The Snowfall Fest was one of the biggest events at Hawkley. Not attending was missing out on one of the best things that the city had to offer, although it was still the same old story of every year. It never stopped feeling like that nostalgia hitting up every year. Most likely that feeling was because it was a family tradition to attend every year, and as time passed, it was a reminiscence of what the year brought into their lives and how Adrian and his family changed during that time.

As the snow fell, Adrian walked through the festival wondering what could he do while he waited on his younger siblings because one thing for sure was that every year he ended up being the babysitter of at least one of them, mostly because they decided they didn’t want to spend time as a family that year so until they got bored with being on their own Adrian watched over them, but don’t take him wrong he wasn’t the overprotective brother he let them breathe, he was just the side watcher who just meddle only if it was necessary.

Or at least that would have been the plan if Adrian hadn’t lost sight of Jeremy, the youngest one. Sure, he still was around the perimeter, but the ocean of people walking around made it more difficult to notice where he was, and at that point, probably asking for help was the right choice. The thing was that he didn’t find someone that he was particularly close to in this case to be like, “Hey! I lost my sibling. Do you mind helping me?” Where was Collin when Adrian needed him the most?

But in the ocean of people, he spotted a certain someone who, at that moment, Adrian thought would help him.
“Laken! Hey! Sorry to bother, have you seen...”
he started saying, but as soon as he spoke he notice his younger sibling just waiting in line for one of the festival games
“Nevermind, I found my brother, sorry to bother I assume you are busy searching people for your podcast.”

Ezra trailed along after Sage as she led him towards the woods. "You're on to something, I think the only way this place could be entertaining is if I was really high," he nodded somberly, but Sage could probably tell he was enjoying himself through the playful look in his eye.

"I feel like you're luring me out to the woods to murder me," he scoffed, poking fun at the hiding away. Honestly, if it were anyone else, he'd probably make fun of them relentlessly for having to hide away to smoke. But, in his days working at the ice rink, he'd seen both her mother and her coach, and he knew that neither one of them was very pleasant, to say the least. He was no stranger to shitty parents, so he let Sage's hesitancy to smoke in a more public space slide.

He let her huddle closer to him as he rolled a joint, a tiny smirk lingering on his face. Really, getting close was the logical thing to do since it was so cold out. When he finished, he held it out to her, letting her light it and take the first hit. "You know me so well; I showed up very late. Surprised they even bother with keeping me around. I'd been there long enough for it to be annoying, though," he rolled his eyes. "Now, we see how long it takes for me to get bored of this." His words had no weight to them, and she was definitely standing close enough to read him like a book. She'd know as well as he did that he didn't ever seem to get tired of hanging out with her.

Ezra took the joint back as she passed it to him, taking a hit as she leaned against him. Turning his head, as if he was just angling himself to take another hit and not blow smoke in her face, he blinked a couple times before taking a hit. It was that shocked expression that seemed to come up whenever she got cuddly that he was always careful to hide. He was never really sure what surprised him more—that she tolerated him enough to actually get that close, or that he allowed it. Usually, he didn't like anyone all up in his personal space. But with the way their relationship was, it felt right. Yeah, the two were flirty, but he felt sure that nothing would happen between them. That made him feel like he was less likely to screw things up and maybe actually have a real friend for once. In many ways, he thought Sage was similar to him—birds of a feather and all that crap.

He passed the joint back to her and decided to lean against a tree, carefully letting Sage fall back slightly with him since he was now supporting her body. He sighed as he rested his head against the wood. "So, how's life? They still working you to death on the ice?" Ezra asked. He remembered her long hours at the ice rink with her mom and coaches pushing her. He respected it, but he couldn't say he understood why she continued down that path. It just seemed so draining. But maybe he was just some good-for-nothing slacker; who knows?

Julia's poor attempt at consolation was actually kind of funny to Marlowe. Mainly because the girl looked so uneasy about the act. It was a rare sight for Marlowe to see the girl feeling anything but disdain and haughtiness.

Julia was probably just glad that no one had to see the small exchange; from what Marlowe knew, the girl cared way too much about how other people saw her, and comforting someone she was supposed to hate would not be a good look. Marlowe would pay to see it happen, though.

Marlowe shook her head lightly at Julia, amused, a slight smirk on her shaken face that grew a little when Julia started about only going to Starbucks— Her insistence about not going to Marlowe's coffee shop, one they constantly had. "Of course we do. We even got little gingerbread bits to put on top." This year's selection was wildly better than last year's, seeing as they finally had the extra funds to buy more ingredients and baking supplies, and Marlowe capitalized on that.

Marlowe treated the shop like it was her own. The shop had been rundown for a while before she'd been hired. The owner didn't care about what happened to the place as long as it had some profit, so Marlowe took over; she did the hiring, the stocking, and all the tedious things managers did. It was a lot of work, but it was worth the pride she felt about it. She'd probably buy the whole place if she ever had the funds.

She hummed lightly, listening to Julia complain about winter. They mostly felt the same about being in Hawkley. "The people here are the worst." Marlowe muttered, "Everyone is always talking about sports like... There are better things to talk about." She huffed, pouting. This town was a fucking nightmare. She'd rather just die than have to see another fancy sporting event that meant nothing to her.

Between all her siblings and her sporty asshole father, Marlowe felt like she had to watch some sport; no matter what was happening, it was always sports. Marlowe was consistently pressured to attend her siblings' games, even when her dad wasn't there.

It came with the territory of being the 'Mom sibling,' she assumed. It would be less unfair if he looked at her paintings or went to see what she submitted in contests, but no. She wasn't important like sports were. She'd never be. It was all so stupid to her. She could be doing much better things alone than around these strangers who shared her blood.

It made her want to paint dramatic pictures of herself destroying every sports celebrity or piece of equipment ever to exist. Yeah. That's what she was going to do when she got home. Marlowe made a little face as she had the amusing thoughts before remembering Julia was there. And that she was also on a Ferris wheel.

A shiver went up her spine. She'd felt so calm before remembering. She hadn't felt it swinging as it moved... It... The festive lights and the distant town below became a blur as Marlowe pressed her face against the cold window. The supposed 'view' others came up for was a mishmash of festival stalls, the town below, and mountains sprawling snow.

It didn't seem all that appealing from Marlowe's perspective. She sunk into the seat and put her hands over her face, "Julia, the Ferris wheel isn't moving." She hissed, muttering expletives.

Tugging on the strap of her bag. Marlowe couldn't help but wish for solid ground beneath her feet. Why the fuck had she gotten in this situation? She frowned, her thoughts once again focusing on Octavia. The one who had insisted on riding this infernal contraption in the first place.

Octavia claimed it was essential for Marlowe to break out of her introverted shell to embrace the joys of social gatherings, or well, that was her excuse to bully Marlowe into doing things. It just made her want to throw rocks at Octavia all of the time.

Marlowe muttered under her breath about her sister, blaming her sibling for the situation she found herself in. The Ferris wheel was supposedly a highlight, a chance to enjoy the view and connect with eachother, whatever the hell that meant. Instead, Marlowe found herself trapped in what felt like the coffin she'd die in, held hostage by Octavia's attempt at sisterly bonding with Julia.

The world outside seemed to spin faster than those spinning carnival games as reality set in. "Julia," Marlowe hissed through gritted teeth, "I'm not good with this stuff. I hate heights. This is like Octavia— My sister's— idea of my personal hell. If she's responsible for this, I swear—" She muttered, the beginning of tears stinging her eyes.

Marlowe shot Julia one more glance. "Cruel is an understatement when Octavia is involved, I swear! She once swapped all my paint colors with shades of neon pink, just for kicks wasting hundreds and hundreds of dollars of my paint. Said it would add 'depth' to my artwork. Depth, my ass. It wasnt even the same type of paint."

Marlowe didn't often rant. In fact, this was probably the first time Julia had ever heard Marlowe talk like this about someone, but she was nervous, and shutting up would make it worse.

As Marlowe continued to vent about Octavia's antics, the Ferris wheel remained stubbornly still, much to Marlowe's dismay. "She thinks it's hilarious to mess with stuff, especially things that involve heights!"

Marlowe shot Julia a look that bordered on desperation. "We have to get off this thing, Julia. I can't, and I mean, I really, really can't do heights, and I definitely can't handle the idea of crying in front of you." She tugged at the strap of her bag again, and her frustration slowly morphed into a more vulnerable emotion. She wiped away an errant tear, seemingly irritated at her own display of emotion.

Marlowe sighed. She wasn't accustomed to exposing this side of herself to anyone, let alone someone like Julia. She bit her lip, trying to keep all her emotions at bay.
