So basically here is the jist + a basic concept and notes on "companions" (soul animals - where a humans soul takes on a physical animal form). Yes very Golden Compass inspired.
Soldier / Soldier
• Male / Male (+ extra characters)
• Alternate Universe Earth
• Spirit Animals / Soul Animals in Physical Form (companions)
• War Zone
One soldier is a crack shot, a soldier the military can not afford to loose. The other is one member of a four man team of empaths. They're all part of a military experiment where high risk soldiers are paired with four empaths to see if the empaths can stabilize the emotional state of the soldier and keep the soldier functioning smoothly on the field. This team of five, one risk soldier and four empaths are placed in high risk and damaging situations to test the limits of the empaths and the soldier.
In short we'd play the team of soldiers with our primary focus being the main pair (an empath and the risk soldier) as they do military mumbo jumbo shit (clearly no knowledge required here). I usually start with some kind of rescue op and from there it is an entirely post by post game (whatever happens, happens / whatever we make happens, happens situation).
Otherwise I expect 200 - 400 word posts, nothing extravagant and somewhat regular pace if we can.

A companion is a characters soul.
Companions are also individuals.
A companions may be a persons soul, but they retain their own personal identity.
Companions ARE NOT PETS.
Companions are acknowledged, spoken to, and treated as equals with their person.
Companions have the same status as their person.
Companions are connected to their person.
They feel some of their persons physical pain.
They feel some of their persons emotions.
For both the degree can vary (take distancing - see blow - into account).
Companions can have full or limited knowledge of their persons thoughts.
Players choice.
Companions need food and sleep.
Companions must stay within 40 feet of their person.
Both the companion and person will feel the emotional strain of distance if separated.
Separation from a companion can cause death.
The process of separating a person from their companion gradually (safely) is called Distancing.
Distancing allows the companion to travel apart from their person.
This is common with persons with birds, bugs, and aquatic companions.
Distancing is not a common practice otherwise.
Companions keep a person stable.
If the companion dies the person dies, and vice versa.
Companions only touch their person.
Touching another persons companion in taboo and very intimate.
Sharing touch is reserved for intimate lovers, people in stable long relationships, and the married.
Teenagers, the young, and adventurous might allow touching just to feel the intense sensations.
Being touched by someone you don't trust, or having touched forced causes pain/fear/anxiety responses. It is a very negative thing to be forced into touch and can cause high emotional and psychological strain.
Companions may touch other companion.
When companions touch each other their persons will feel it.
Companions sharing touch can be comforting or have the opposite effect depending on their relationship.
Companions licking blood or tears of another person is taboo.
Sharing fluids is extremely intimate.
Licking tears or blood for example.
The type of animal a companion is varies. Most companions are of reasonable and manageable size (small to medium sized animals). A person is born with their companion and the companion will settle on a form within the first three years of a persons life.
Feline and canine companions are the most common with aquatic being the most rare (as they require special environments - IE water!). Certain cultures see different types of animal companions as good/bad or safe/dangerous and often treat a person according to their animal rather than who they are (persecution via animal companion).
In general though companions are treated equal to their person and are considered people in and of themselves.
