Sonic Boom!

After finally watching Kung Fu Hustle, I was impressed with the "Lion's Roar Technique" used.  Along with the sidebar on page 153 of the core rulebook, which mentions a Solar shouting loud enough to shatter bones.

With this in mind, I wanted to develop a series of Charms that allow Solars to use their voice in an attacking manner.  I was thinking of using Presence or Performance as the Ability but unsure which would be suited.

Any ideas to the Ability, as well as any Charm mechanics?

Cheers,

~FC.

I'd say Performance. Presence related more to projecting an impression of one's self, be it warm and fuzzy, creepy, or otherwise.

Maybe one of the Charms could produce an effect similar to Thunder Wolf's Howl, only more or less powerful (depending on the pre-requisites).

I was gonna start off with an effect that forces knockback, another that could destroy inanimate objects, as well as disarming and stunning an opponent.  Building up, I'd like an effect that could target an area and from there cause a storm of some kind.

~FC.

Ok, had some time to scribble, here's what I've got in ideas so far:

The Sonic Boom tree (yeah, I know) allows the Solar to use the power of her voice as a devastating weapon, capable of breaking bones and destroying walls, even encasing an enemy in a battering tornado of sound.

Ideas for Charms:

  • Cause knockback and stun, as well as bashing damage
Surrounds the opponent in an enclosure of sound that pounds continuously
    Piercing attack that penetrates armour
    An area effect
    Rips through inanimate objects
An attack that causes lethal damage

Any other ideas?

First Charm, C&C would be appreciated   :)

Clearing-the-Throat Technique

Cost: 2 motes

Duration: Instant

Type: Simple

Minimum Performance: 1

Minimum Essence: 2

Prerequisites: None

There is nothing worse than when one is trying to make herself heard above the noise of a crowd, the din of battle or the shouts of an argument, especially when the information is of grave importance.  With this Charm, the Exalt fills her vocal cords with Essence, and with a brief word, his voice is raised tenfold, above all others.    Those whose permanent Essence is the same or below will stop speaking and remain quiet, instantly taking notice of the Charm user.  If one whose Essence is above the Solar using the Charm, they aren’t affected by the tone, as are those whom are hearing-impaired.  This Charm will affect an area up to the amount of people the Exalt can see or know to be in the area.

~FC.

I think the area of affect is a bit vauge and could lead to someone standing on top of a tower and saying everyone to the horizon can hear him.  Perhaps just 10 yards per point of permanent Essence or 1 room, whichever is smaller?

Yeah, I was unsure of that, but I like the area you've given.

*yoink*

Many thanks

Clearing-the-Throat Technique? But I thought that was only a myth!

Kung-fu Hustle ftw!

Got a few more Charms done, but would really appreciate some tender c&c.

Clearing-the-Throat Technique

Cost: 1 mote

Duration: Instant

Type: Simple

Minimum Performance: 1

Minimum Essence: 1

Prerequisites: None

(Changed this Charm slightly from the origional post by lowering the minimums and cost, as well as adding uteck's idea on range)

Cracking Vase Method

Cost: 3 motes + 1 mote per soak reduced

Duration: Instant

Type: Supplemental

Minimum Performance: 3

Minimum Essence: 1

Prerequisites: Clearing-the-Throat Technique

A Solar can now amplify the tone of her voice to such a level that the structure of an item is lessoned to a certain degree, causing minute cracks within the fabric that holds it together and can even smash it with an overpowering force.  The Exalt shouts towards an object using her Manipulation + Performance, adding her Essence in automatic successes, causing bashing damage.  For each extra mote spent above the initial three reduces both the bashing and lethal soaks of the item by 1 point and no more motes can be spent than the Exalt’s Performance score.  The damage delivered can affect armor and weapons, but is not able to affect the body in any manner since the tone if different, and the soak reduced is permanent needing repairs by an appropriately skilled craftsman.  This Charm is unable to affect items crafted using Magical Materials.

Stunning Voice Strike

Cost: 2 motes

Duration: Instant

Type: Supplemental

Minimum Performance: 2

Minimum Essence: 2

Prerequisites: Clearing-the-Throat Technique

The Exalt has learned how to harness her voice to such an effect that she can now stop an opponent in their tracks, stunning them in the process.  The Solar strikes using her Manipulation + Performance that can be dodge and parried as normal.  If the Exalt strikes, the extra successes are the number of turns in which the opponent is stunned for, causing a –2 penalty for their dice pools during this period.  This attack is only broad enough to affect a single person, even effecting the deaf since it is a forceful blow not just a sound, but cannot affect the same target until they have recovered from the original stunning blow.

Lion’s Roar Technique

Cost: 3 motes + 1 mote per die

Duration: Instant

Type: Simple

Minimum Performance: 3

Minimum Essence: 2

Prerequisites: Stunning Voice Strike

The Exalt takes a moment to draw a breath, filling it with Essence and focuses it through her powerful voice creating a weapon that can now pummel the body and capable of throwing the opponent back off their feet.  The player makes a Manipulation + Performance roll to attack, with an extra dice bought for each extra mote spent but no more than doubling their base pool, and the target can defend as normal.  The raw damage of a successful strike is equal to the Solar’s Manipulation +  extra successes and inflicts bashing damage, which can only be soaked by natural soak.  The range of this Charm is equal to (the Exalt’s Performance x 5) yards.  The secondary effect only works if the opponent is successfully struck, taking at least a single health level, and is thrown backwards (the Exalt’s Essence x 10 – the opponent’s Stamina + Resistance) yards (as per knockback rules, core rulebook, page 235).

Sonic Boom Shout

Cost: 5 motes, 1 willpower

Duration: Instant

Type: Simple

Minimum Performance: 4

Minimum Essence: 3

Prerequisites: Lion’s Roar Technique

Once the Solar has trained her voice to take the strain of focused Essence that rips through it, she can now expand its might to cause an explosion that affects many individuals at once.

(This Charm needs some mechanics, but I'm unsure where to head without speedbumping the other Charms.)

Cheers,

~FC.

I fail to see why you're using Manipulation as the default Attribute.  It seems rather clear to me that Charisma is more appropros.

I like the idea, though it could be refined and tuned out--but what you've got it real nice so far!

But seriously I agree with Seiraryu charisma seems a more natural approach.  All joking aside how about Seven thunders roar? for a charm name.

I went with Manipulation because its more forceful, where as Charisma is about natural liking and personal magnetism.

I agree, cheers for the comments.

Manipulation is more subtle, if you think about it.  It's about cajoling and being devious... while Charisma is all about the grandeur, the now.  Charisma has a passive effect as well as an active one, it's active effect is much more appropriate for this.

Is Lion's Roar Technique/Seven Thunders Roar a bit much with a built in dice doubler?  I would leave it at just Manipulation+Performance, and if people want more dice they need to stunt or combo it.  Masterful Performance Exercise would be a good one to combo with

Hmm, maybe, I'll have to playtest them first to see.  Also I'm thinking of making Clearing-the-Throat Technique an offshoot Charm and make Stunning Voice Strike the initial tree Charm.  Any thoughts?

~FC.

Stamina would be more appropriate to create a Lunar/Alchemical Charm that raises the vioce to volumes that do harm.  Another course, Possible through Manipulation, would be to create subsonic or ultrasonic frequencies that temporarily paralyze people, that cause people to lose control of their bowels, etc.  With such Manipulation Charms, you could clear out a room really fast.

Maybe, but at the moment I'm focusing on Solars only.

I'll confuse myself if I attempt anything else

Yay, I win!  Ha ha! </Harvey Birdman>

Anyway, a good idea would be a Charm that allows a character to change the frequency of his voice to the point where he can affect creature without them even knowing it.

For example, a Charm that, when the character hums, raises the pitch of just that hum and nothing else the character says to such a high frequency that all canines colapse to the ground whining and in extreme pain.

It's just a sort of template, really.  You go with it!
