oftball's just a girl's game, right? just the girly version of baseball, the easier version of softball, right?
wrong.
for as long as the sport as existed, there has been a debate of if softball and baseball are at the same level or if one is easier than the other. the discussion was met with the AAGPBL (All American Girls Professional Baseball League) in the 40s. It was short lived, ending in the mid 50s, but while it lasted, the women on the teams played their hearts out and paved a way for women in the world of sports.
flash forward to the present, one of the girls that participated in the AAGPBL is now the head softball coach at the university of california at berkeley. the famous dottie hinson and her two assistant coaches have come together with a like-minded dream; a legitimate collegiate co-ed softball team. dottie was tired of hearing how softball was just "a girl's game" and wanted to give boys a chance to play the sport for themselves. afterall she played baseball and it wasn't so hard.
after a lot of fighting, the NCAA (National Colligiate Athletic Association) had granted them one season to "showcase" this co-ed team. one season to prove them why there should be a co-ed softball team. the catch is, if they lose more than four games in this one season, the co-ed team is cut from the league, and the dream is crushed for good. these three coaches are determined to train these athletes to be the best of the best, to revolutionize the very way softball is played.
as dottie and the other coaches look to putting together their "dream team", they've found themselves realizing just how hard this is going to be. with people from all over the country are looking to be a part of history, the original varsity girls of UOC aren't even guaranteed a spot. the only question on everyone's mind is who made the cut?

head coach
dottie hinson; #8
the big boss. this is the coach that has been in the game for most of their life. they eat, drink, and live softball. they're incredibly strategic and know the game like the back of their hand. what they say goes and if you fight they will gladly replace you. this season isn't the one for games.
first base coach
open
right hand man. this is the coach that helps make the head coach's dream alive. they tend to work more with the infielders during practices and coaches the team from the first base during the offensive half of the inning
third base coach
open
most likely the voice of reason that keeps the coaches and players from throwing down on the field. works more with the outfielders during practices and coaches the team from third base during the offensive half of the inning.
team managers
0/2
the secret to any good sports team, is their managers. most of the time they're called the "water girl/boys" but they do so much more than that. they help haul equipment, tend to wounds in the dugout, take care of the books during the game, cheer their team on from the dugout, etc. they basically get all the fun parts of being on the team without ever having the stress of being on the field.
starting pitcher
open
while the coach technically leads the team, everyone knows that the team is only as good as their pitcher. the entire game revolves around having an excellent pitcher, which explains why it's one of the most difficult positions. the amount of sweat, blood and tears that go into practice for a pitcher is daunting to any newcomer. this position tends to get injuried the quickest if not doing proper stretching, cool down, and maintaining of themselves. tends to be the face of the team, the poster child.
starting catcher
open
the pitcher's second in command. the bond between a pitcher and their catcher is unbreakable. a pitcher is nothing without their catcher and every hour a pitcher is practice , their catcher is there on the receiving end of that pitch. this position requires the strongest, and one of the most accurate arms on the team in order to throw all the way across the infield when needed. catchers tend to be the powerhouse of the team due to the strength they must build up to play their position.
starting first baseman
andromeda jackson #19
also known as "ol reliable". this is a position where the player must have a golden glove. in the heat of the game, the team cannot be worrying about if their first baseman is going to catch the throw or not. this position must be able to stretch as far as possible, foot still on base, and catch the ball being thrown to them. along with catching, this position requires a strong and accurate throw, as they throw to other positions constantly.
starting second baseman
open
this is a position that demands quick reaction time. any good SECOND baseman will tell you that the ground is their friend. playing this position means being able to take a ground ball, no matter how it hops and no hesitation to dive for a ball. on top of getting the ball, the second baseman must also have a quick release, as speed is key in getting the ball where it needs to be to get the out.
starting shortstop
open
countless nicknames have been given to countless shortstops, so long as they have deserved them. this position demands more than just a quick reaction time. shorttop must be, without a doubt, the most agile and nimble player on the field. shortstops tend to say that second basemen are just shortstops who didn't make the cut.
starting third baseman
open
think first base, but quicker. they don't get as much action as first base does, but when they do it's no time for lallygagging. accuract is a key element for this position, and without it the game falls apart. the third baseman must have a good, accurate arm; even if it's not the strongest.
starting outfielders
1/3
left field, center field, and right field. these positions tend to get ridden off as where to put the laziest players. that assumption could not be further from the truth. these three positions are the difference between a double play and a home run. these outfielders must have stamina like no other, and an incredibly strong throwing arm on them
benchwarmers/subs
0/5
these are the athletes that are here in case of emergency. if a starter gets injured or tired or needs to be saved for a specific time in the game, that's where the subs come in. they are worked just as hard as the starters, just tend. tohave less experience. the positions with subs are:
pitcher: open
catcher: open
an infielder: open
two outfilders: 0/2

IC: can be broken
from head coach Dottie;
i know we're all entering something new and exciting and never been done before, but let me set a few things straight.
1) i will not tolerate fighting on my field between my own athletes. you may not all be my girls like in years past, but you are all still my athletes. this season is bigger than yourselves so if you got a problem with someone, don't let it effect the game or you have me to answer to.
2) you are collegiate athletes, you should know that you need to be taking care of yourself. no excessive drinking, no smoking, no illegal drugs, and no... extra activities that could cause... unexpected injuries
3) for every minute you're late to practice it's an extra mile you run. if you are going to be late or miss practice and you come communicate with me about it, then you only have to run a max of four miles and then make up the drills you missed.
4) i don't do back talk or sarcasm during practice. if you disrespect me on my field, it's two miles for every time you piss me off, which will change depending on the day
5) if you have anything less than a C average in your classes, the NCAA will prohibit you from playing. to make sure we're safe on that point, i will not allow you to even sit on my bench if you drop below a B average.
OOC rules
OOC: cannot be broken
- we're in college sports folks, 18-24 on our players
- i get that this is a softball thread, but please do your best to keep the genders even. i'll do my best to keep this first post updated as people complete their forms.
- all genders, sexualities, races, etc. are welcome in any position!
- you do NOT need to be all knowing about the sport of softball to join! it's not like we're going to be rping the games play by play. if you ever have any questions you can always ask me! please don't let you not knowing about softball be a reason not to join the thread ((:
- your characters don't have to be from cali or even have gone to university of california previously! as stated, athletes from around the country have been transferring to get on this team
- if you have a problem with me or someone else on this thread, pm me about it. just keep it off the thread/discord.
- not every character is perfect. add some f l a v o r
- this is an advanced thread so at least two paragraphs per post. i normally don't ask for rp samples, because your level of advancement shows in your forms.
- do as many characters as you think you can handle, as long as you're not making five girls or five guys, i'm fine
- whenever we get to the discord please don't leave anyone out! don't ignore someone asking to plot w/ you on purpose
- all RPN rules apply
- if you break any of these IC rules, you get one warning. if you break another rule again, i will kick you from this thread.
