Welcome to my recruitment thread!
I decided to treat this one a bit differently! So I hope you enjoy!!
"Apologies for the delay." She says calmly as she enters the tent and takes a seat at the end of an old and worn-down oak table across from you and places her elbows on the surface, interlacing her fingers just in front of her mouth.
"I'll get right to the point. You're here because you foolishly sought to join the war to free our country from the monster that sits on the throne." She says with an icy green stare.
"You were warned from the start when our Scouts first approached you that your chances of surviving this war were basically zero. Yet here you all are..."
She closes her eyes.
"Twelve years... Twelve years this Revolution has raged against the monster disguising himself as human being known as Egruus To' Veilbrand. Twelve years we've been adding members to our ranks, and losing them just as quickly. Twelve years we've made progress only to see it stripped away in an instant. Twelve years we've fought an uphill struggle where our feet scrape the ground and never seem to gain any headway. Twelve long years we've watched that monster, and the monsters serving under him, tear the landscape and the innocent people living there apart with only broken, mangled, and disfigured corpses left behind for us to find and grieve over. And all because it brings them pleasure to watch us all suffer."
Her eyes open slowly, locking on yours.
"Yet here you all are..." She whispers.
Her fingers unlace and her hands slap the tabletop.
"I won't beat around the bush. Your chances of survival truly are about as close to zero as one could possibly get. The average life span of any recruit to this Revolution is around three months. If you make it that far then consider yourself part of the lucky minority."
She stands and walks around the table, hands clasped behind her back as she turns her back to everyone.
"We're low on weapons and armor. What equipment we do have is old and worn down. We recently lost the last of our trade partners to Egruus' border patrol getting lucky in identifying him. We're low on food and water. We're low on time. And we're low on morale."
She turns to face everyone.
"But this Revolution has been in this situation before. We didn't fold then, and we won't fold now. Your chances of survival are about zero. And your chances of being the one to make a difference are just as low. But as we've said from the beginning: Just because something seems hopeless doesn't renounce your responsibility to try!" She said forcefully with her right hand clenching into a fist in front of her chest.
"Egruus, and his armies consisting of monsters in human bodies, have tasted defeat by our hands before. And they'll do so again. We just need the right moment to strike and reclaim our trade opportunities. But that moment can't happen without fresh faces. Your faces. Face they've never seen. Faces they'll never expect. You're likely going to die. But you're here anyway. So that means you're ready to take the risk and lay your life on the line for your homeland... Isn't that right?"
She walks a bit closer, brushing a single stray golden bang out from in front of her face.
"If your hearts are true and your spines are strong, then clasp your right fist over your heart and swear your loyalty to Veilbrand. Not to this Revolution. Veilbrand!" She yells as she clasps her own right fist above her heart.
"This Revolution is comprised of the sons and daughters of this land! Ordinary folk who took up gloves in the crop fields, saws in the lumber mills, and brooms in the streets! They are not warriors. They are not soldiers. They weren't born for battle. And they never wanted this war." Her voice quivers subtly, and lips tighten for the briefest moment before she takes a breath.
"We don't want this war either. But it's war Egruus has brought upon us all. We've no choice but to take up arms, band together, and fight with mind, body, and soul for the future of all who share this land we call "home.""
Her fist clenches tighter.
"I am the Maiden of Revolution. Your leader. And your guide to Hell and beyond. Follow me if you've the stomach to see this through to the end! If not... You know where the door is!" She declares while pointing to the tent entrance.
"For those who stay, welcome to the Revolution."
PHEW!
Now, on to the nitty gritty!
Time Period - The RP takes place in an early-medieval and semi-realistic fantasy world very much like our own. Despite this being classified as "Fantasy," there's no magic, and there's no mythical creatures. But there are some fantasy creatures of my own design which will be present from time to time (mostly as game or an occasional obstacle during periods of travel).
Special Note - There is one individual in this world who embodies a sci-fi/occult element of the RP. He's known as the Red-Eyed Demon, an assassin from the world's most elusive and successful assassin organization. And yes, his eyes actually glow with an otherworldly crimson aura. The circumstances surrounding his eyes are a mystery. But many believe it has something to do with an ancient cult worshiping the Nether Realm who've showed a growing presence in recent decades. But because of how secretive they are, few have ever confirmed this theory.
What is "known" about this individual is that he's ruthless, tenacious, highly efficient, and is the single most successful assassin in the known world with a body count to match. Nobody knows exactly how many he's left in his wake, but it's enough to strike fear into the hearts of even those who fancy themselves as "fearless." Men standing as tall as 6' 8" with impressive muscular physiques who fancy themselves as hardened mercenaries and bounty hunters have literally pissed themselves by nothing more than a single glimpse of those glowing demonic eyes in the dark of night.
This character will play a role a bit later in the RP. But for now just know he's in the background doing his thing somewhere else in the world and that he's on an eventual collision course with all of our characters.
The World - Veilbrand is a very rocky land bordered on nearly all sides by vast mountain ranges. Only the West Coast offers a break of such scenery. The lowlands are covered in vast grasslands, savannahs, and the occasional oak or spruce forest depending on proximity to the mountains. There's one mountain range extending into the center of the nation called "The Arm," with the end of it having a 5-way split which earned its namesake of "The Hand."
Below you will find 3 maps of the nation depicting the general appearance of the landscape, the primary points of interest, and the main bodies of water.
Also, "Valoc" is the capital of the nation where Egruus To' Veilbrand resides. It's a mountain fortress/city. All but impenetrable from the outside. And due to its proximity to the Southern Pass he's got a stranglehold on all trade with the nation on the other end known as Gweynura. To the north, beyond the small (unnamed) northern pass is the nation of Cre' Est. Trade there is all but closed as the Royal Family wants no part of what's happening in Veilbrand, nor will it take a side.
Technology - The flintlock musket and pistol are the pinnacle of weapon's technology (hence why the Maiden is holding one in her OC Photo). There is no electricity. So light is provided by way of oil lanterns and candles. Clothing is made almost entirely of fur, wool, cotton, silk, linen, and leather. Transportation is largely on foot. If you've the money for a horse, that's also an option. And horse drawn carriage services are also available for long-distance travel for customers who don't mind paying the hefty fee.
1) Your character must be an ordinary person, not a battle-hardened warrior
Just as the Maiden stated in her recruitment introduction, the Revolution is not comprised of warriors.
Mercenaries, bounty hunters, wandering warriors, or combat-focused characters of any kind will be allowed. And no, the Revolution would not go outside of Veilbrand to find such people. They're very proud of themselves and their homeland. And they don't want anyone's help to reclaim their home from the monster on the throne.
Your character must come from an ordinary background and can never have tasted true battle before. A scuffle in the streets with the local neighborhood bully as a kid/teen is fine. But actual life-death combat is a no-no.
2) Your character's first taste of life-death conflict must be a difficult and traumatizing event
I've seen it happen before, and I've ZERO intention of letting it have even a chance of happening again, that an otherwise "normal" person's first taste of life-death conflict brought about a sudden awakening of a battle instinct that basically turned them into Mikasa/Levi from Attack on Titan where they barely reacted to the trauma of the event at all after it was over, and from then on were an ass-kicking machine with no explanation as to how or why they suddenly had amazing martial arts and killing skills. That kind of shit doesn't happen in real life. And even if this is a Fantasy RP I'm playing it as close to real life as possible outside of the Red-Eyed Demon's circumstances. But even he, despite the legends and myths about him, is still a human being with very real human limitations.
3) Please separate yourself from the IC
I was guilty myself a number of years ago of letting my personal feelings for what was happening in the IC posting section affect how I played my characters. I pushed them to make out of character decisions because I really wanted something specific to happen. And when I did I wasn't role-playing anymore. I was forcing my own wants and desires onto a character who did not share them with me. And it only made me and the RP itself as well suffer as a result.
So please don't make my mistake.
Also, please do not ask other players if romance is possible between your characters. Instead, take a very long and careful look at the characters involved in your head-canon and ask if they're actually two people who could be drawn to each other naturally. The moment you ask someone else if a romance is possible and start working towards it, you're not letting the characters decide anymore. You're trying to decide for them. And that's not role-playing. Nor is it true to or fair to the characters themselves. You created them, but they're still their own people living within this RP world and they don't want or need your help with such things.
So please stay out of your character's love lives. If it happens, it happens. Keep your desires for it to yourself, and let come what may in the IC posting.
4) No God-Modding, Metagaming, or Power Playing
The use of any of the above will get you an instant one-way ticket out of the RP. End of story.
If you don't know what these are, please look them up.
I know I'm a bit of a stiff on my rules, but it's because both they and the impact they each have on the RP are really important to me!
Cheers!
