    Resilient: If there's one thing to know about Josh, it's that he doesn't know when to quit. It's as if he's hard-wired get back up again when life decides to drop kick him into oblivion. He knows the responsibility he bares with those he wants to care for and will never let difficult circumstances set him back. Josh is always determined to bounce back and navigate his way through whatever trials lay ahead.
    
    Nurturing: Being the older of two siblings, and with their parents being so emotionally absent, Josh learned how to be a good care taker. While most people's first impression of Joshua McMillien is a cold, harsh individual, Josh has a warm, caring side. It tends to stay hidden until needed, when checking on his sister and being a father to his daughter, Amelia. Certainly not a trait he was "born" with, but a trait he soon adopted into his regular being. It came first with his sister, learning a routine on "how" to take care of someone, and by the time his daughter came into the picture, it was a natural action to him.
    
    Passionate: When you strip away the need for Josh to take care of others, he's a very passionate individual. His passion and love for history and archeology stayed very present all throughout his life. And it's not just those topics, there is a wide variety of other interests that cause Josh to be very engaged and emphatic in a group setting. It's a bit of a surprise for those who aren't familiar with Josh, but with his close friends and family it's one of those things that just make sense.
    
    Attentive: Josh's quiet nature and care-taking background have given Josh the unique trait of being incredibly attentive. Josh notices things that most others don't, he's always paying attention to his surroundings and who is around at the time. It started as something that happened because he wasn't as talkative as his friends, but it soon showed its usefulness while taking care of his sister, as he always seems to remember every little detail about her. And it's something that has bleed over into all his relationships. Josh always pays attention and will never forget if someone brings up that they don't like listening to jazz in the car or if they love turning off all the lights in the house to watch the rainstorm through a window.
    
    Reserved: At first impression, Josh is always withdrawn into himself. And truth be told, that lasts far past just a first impression. With his familial relationships, Josh has been left feeling like his words don't matter, so he's been almost conditioned to not speak unless spoken to. Of course, this isn't a be all end all to his personality; there are many times when Josh knows something needs to be done, so he'll speak up and take charge. But just on his own? When there's nothing to be done but sit and relax? Josh prefers to stay on the quieter side.
    
    Persistent: Working in tandem with his resilience, Josh doesn't know how to let things go. Whether it be his work, his child or even his sister, when he feels he knows best he will not let anything less slide. No matter who stands in his way, Josh will do what he knows needs to be done. He's received many complaints (mostly from his sister) of not leaving her alone when he catches wind that she's done something "bad". And it's true, if Josh guesses that something is wrong, he won't give up until he gets an honest answer.
    
    Vulnerability Issues: Josh has some BIG issues with letting his guard down and being vulnerable with others. His parents were never that vulnerable with him and with some wires crossing in his brain, Josh figured that if he was openly vulnerable to others that he wouldn't be strong enough to take care of his sister and others who needed him. As he's grown older and more cynical, he feels if he's vulnerable with people, it'll come back to bite him in the ass; that someone will use his vulnerabilities against him and that's the last thing he wants. He wants to keep his demeanor of strong and capable.

    Joshua Dean McMillien was born as the first born son to Jim and Donna McMillien in Manhattan New York. Jim and Donna made a very successful life for themselves, having been promoted within the luxury hotel chain they had been working at for many years. Jim had been promoted to Vice President of Business Development, which Donna had been promoted to Director of Human Resources. The two had met while in their undergrad and made their careers their entire lives. They were perfect sweethearts, seeming to compliment each other wonderfully especially with their mutual priority of their careers.
    
    Two years after Joshua, the McMillien's welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their family, Cassandra. Josh took to being an older brother swimmingly; he never really showed an overabundance of emotional caring toward his little sister; instead, Josh proved himself a boy of actions. He showed his love for Casey through acts, always watching her when she played, helping her reach books that were too high up for her, and hugging her whenever she scrapped her knee. Josh truly loved his sister as they grew up. Sadly, Josh unofficially took on the massive responsibility of taking care of his sister as they grew up due to the emotional absence of their parents.
    
    With their still fairly recent promotions, Jim and Donna were only parents at a surface level; they only made time for appearing to be the happy mother and father of Josh and Casey. They proudly displayed pictures of their children around their offices, but never spent time with them at home. Showed up for school plays and sports games, but never took them out to celebrate after the fact. Took them to the doctors for all their regular check ups and marked all the boxes of being "good parents", but Josh just saw them as the two adults that provide them food and clothes.
    
    So Josh basically raised Casey. He kept track of everything there was to know about Casey; her favorite foods, the songs she couldn't stand to listen to, her favorite pair of shoes, what she was allergic to, who was and wasn't her friend that week at school, any and all of it, Josh knew about his sister. There wasn't a speck of annoyance in his body when it came to Casey. He loved his little sister and all his annoyance was shifted towards their parents. If they didn't want to get to know their children, then Josh would make sure SOMEBODY got to know the wonderful being that was Casey. As for him, he didn't mind if anybody did or didn't know him. He could take care of himself.
    
    Right before Josh's freshman year of high school, Jim and Donna had the opportunity to move out to Washington state to help run a brand new hotel location. Without even talking to their children, Jim and Donna made the decision and told Josh and Cassandra to begin packing. Casey was more upset than Josh, having grown super attached to New York (and in the middle of a middle school summer romance). Casey never did well with drastic and sudden change. The McMillien's picked up and contracted to have a massive house built in a small, cozy town called Leavenworth, Washington. Josh hated how tacky and tone deaf their new house was in comparison to the rest of the town.
    
    Back in Manhattan, Josh had earned the reputation of being Casey's stoic and protective older brother. He knew that there would be bullies that tried to dull Casey's sparkle and personality, and Josh never wanted that. He knew if he was intimidating and confronted anybody who "posed a threat", Casey would be alright. But as they began at their new school in Leavenworth, Josh quickly learned there were far less "threats" in Washington than New York. Especially in the small town they found themselves in. So now, Josh was the smart and quiet one with a bright, quirky little sister. He continued to flex his knowledge and interest about world history, which helped show his fellow classmates that he was more approachable than he let on. Eventually, Josh adapted his own group of friends who not only accepted and cherished him, but also his sister. (WILL ADD TO THIS AS PLOTS ARE MADE)
    
    After high school, Josh immediately started going to college in pursuit of becoming an Archeologist. It was his absolute dream job to explore the world and uncover more and more culture. He was truly fascinated by the cultures of the world, especially cultures of the past and how they shaped the societies seen currently. He stayed in Washington, for Casey's sake, since his parents were still as absent as ever.
    
    While in college, Josh met Ashley Hayes. The woman he quickly assumed to be the love of his life. Ashley was a sweet, bubbly sorority girl and Joshua has no idea how they even came to crossing paths. They just so happened to be at some college party, one of Josh's buddies convincing him he had studied enough for one night and should "come enjoy the real meaning of college". Somehow Ashley and Josh hit it off, and when they graduated after two years of dating, Josh proposed. Their relationship seemed perfect all while they were dating; she was reasonable, supportive of his goals, they seemed to be on the same page about life: spend a few years exploring the world before settling down somewhere to start a family. Josh desperately wanted to travel the world and scratch that itch of first-handedly experiencing the cultures of the world.
    
    Their wedding was beautiful, probably a little more "spectacular" than Josh cared for. When Ashley finally met Josh's parents and realized how loaded they were, she sweet-talked her way into their hearts and got them to pay for the majority of their wedding. It never raised a red flag for Josh, as he was the #1 player in the game of using his parents for money. Once Ashley and his mother were suddenly best friends, Josh knew his wedding was going to be just another way for his parents to show they were wonderful parents. But Josh didn't care all that much, all he cared about was marrying Ashley and having his sister at his side as his "best man".
    
    Married life felt like a breeze for Josh. They were both working on their careers, her a nurse and him an archeologist. After a few months, Josh had his first work trip, out to Egypt for a month. Josh had never been more noticeably excited. When he came home to talk to his wife about the trip, Ashley seemed... not as excited. Her tone was more flat than normal and she seemed to get over the "excitement" awfully fast. Josh was set to fly out in just a week's time, and it just so happened that in that week, Ashley told Josh she was pregnant. She had taken a pregnancy test and it was positive. Josh completely told the guys at work that he wouldn't be able to make it on the trip and stayed to support Ashley through her first trimester. When Ashley continued to not show any further signs of pregnancy, Josh urged his wife to go to the hospital, just to check on everything and make sure she was alright.
    
    Turns out, Ashley had faked the pregnancy to keep Joshua home with her. There was a massive fight between the two, and Josh ended up calling his boss and explaining the situation. His boss was more than caring and understanding and hooked him up with an immediate flight out to Egypt to catch up and join the project with his colleagues. When Joshua returned, Ashley was still mad at him for leaving. Joshua sat the two of them down to have a serious talk with his wife, about the plans they put in place when they were engaged. How they agreed to wait several years before settling down and starting a family. Ashley understood and just said she wanted to be a mom sooner than she realized. Joshua was understanding and comforted his wife. He offered a compromise, if he could find some kind of job for her with his office that allowed her to get paid to travel with him; so they could both travel and still be together before completely settling down. Ashley seemed to be open to the idea and the night ended sweetly for them.
    
    And that was the night that their daughter, Isabella, was conceived. Ashley had lied about the entire thing and decided to, this time, wait until she made it past her first trimester before telling her husband. About a month after Josh returned from Egypt, he was getting sent out to Machu Picchu for another dig. Before leaving, he reassured his wife that he was still looking for a potential job for her. But this dig would be a big one; He would be gone for close to three months before coming home for a week and then turning back around to go to Europe for another three month dig.
    
    Long story short, while Josh was in Machu Picchu, Ashley called him saying she was pregnant, for real this time. Josh didn't know if he should be elated or furious; so honestly he was both. He knew he would love to be a dad, he had always wanted to have his own family, but he knew that with his first child, he wouldn't want to travel as much in order to stay around and help take care of them. But he was nowhere near close to being done seeing the world.
    
    Once Ashley was through the second trimester and everything seemed to be in the clear for her pregnancy, Josh informed his job that he most likely wouldn't be able to go on any more international digs. His child was due in just three months and he didn't want to risk not being there for Ashley when she went into labor. Of course, they didn't want to let him go from digs, as he was one of their brightest. They brought up how there was a week long Amazonian dig in just two months, only two weeks before Ashley was due. The Amazon was Josh's kryptonite. He had always wanted to go experience and discover the mysteries of the Amazon. Josh sat down, once again, with Ashley to have a conversation with her about the dig. He swore up and down it would be his last dig for years, and he had no idea when he'd have another chance to go to the heart of the Amazon. After a lot of conversation, and a lot of Joshua giving up his hobbies and passions, Ashley agreed to him going on the dig.
    
    So Josh went and had the time of his life. His co-workers made sure to pull out all the stops for his final dig, setting up tours that helped immerse them in the Amazonian culture and wildlife before sending him off into fatherhood. However, on his last day of the trip, Ashley called him and introduced him to their daughter. She gave birth, and never said anything prior.
    
    This was the beginning of the end of their marriage. Joshua was heart broken that he wasn't able to be there for the birth of his daughter. He was furious when he came home, and Ashley continued to gaslight him and manipulate him into sounding like a terrible husband and father. And so began the slow and painful process of attempting to fix their marriage for the sake of their daughter, eventually realizing there's no use, and settling for divorce.
    
    It's been a long, messy divorce. Josh has never felt more alone than during the whole legal proceedings of their divorce and the custody battle. Josh had a pit of dread that he wouldn't be able to get custody of his daughter, after everything he'd done to look better in the judge's eyes. Not only did he swear up and down that he would stay in the state as long as his daughter needed him, he even quit his job as an archeologist and became the history teacher at the nearby high school. But still, somehow, he doesn't feel very good about the whole thing. So, he begged Ashley to let him have seven year old Isabella for the holidays this year, so he could take her to the town he considered his home, Leavenworth, to be able to connect with her before completely losing her.

history: Originally born in Washington DC, her parents thought that they could make a better living out west after struggling to put food on the table for decades of living in poverty. So they packed up and moved when Liyu was just a little girl, only to find that the west was equally unwelcoming and if not a colder climate than back east. However, with no more money for transience, they were forced to settle in a small town where they knew nobody. Always with her head in the clouds, she found solace in a rocky upbringing through artistic means, feeling that she could express beauty in the mundane. Not the wealthiest, though perhaps a little better off than they were in small town living, she developed a deep appreciation for the human form.

Friends were fairly easy with an amicable personality and a general earnest sweetness to her character. However, small towns will as small towns do, and she found herself on the outskirts of the society by virtue of her more... expressive and wilder choices in appearance. Never really one to fit in, after graduating she moved out to Portland, and then Seattle. She lived with friends of friends of friends, usually in artist communes. After that she started making her way south where her more artistic callings were better appreciated. Eventually, she got a degree from a community college in the visual arts. Appreciated as an up and coming artist, she has managed to secure for herself a relatively steady income based off of what she loves: artistry with a little DIY attitude.

A small, but boisterous life for a person who never really fit in, and perhaps never really wanted to in the first place.

But loyalty begets loyalty, especially when her world is of humans and connections. She'd agreed to eventually circle back to her hometown before taking off again back to what is currently Joshua Tree, and that she will.

Background:
Franki was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Wanting change, his parents bought a house in Leavenworth- and enrolled him in the local primary school. He was a skinny child, with neatly combed brown hair and thick rimmed glasses that made him look like the Milky Way kid. Picked on for his geeky demeanor, he found solace in making a group of friends with offers of completing their homework assignments. Three time winner of Leavenworth's annual science fair, it seemed as if Franki had a bright future ahead of him. Highschool began in much the same way- Franki excelling in all his classes. He even hoped for early graduation. Franki was caring and sensitive, often picking up on the emotions of others before they had said anything. He would boast about his collection of action-figures and comics, allowing only his closest friends to read and touch them.

Strangely, in their last year of high school, a change became apparent in Franki. He began to fall behind with school work- despite still being as intelligent as ever. He became a slacker, rarely paying attention in class. By the time high school had finished, Franki had barely graduated. If wasted potential was the Olympics, Franki was going for gold. Still, he happily encouraged his friends to pursue their passions and was always there to pack their cars and cheerily wave them off when it came time for them to move away. Franki stayed in Leavenworth, bouncing between menial jobs whilst attending weekend ragers. When not working or partying, you can find him in the local comic shop, arguing with the clerk about the price of the latest issue of Batman.   Snips of snails and puppy dogs' tails; That's what little boys are made of. Pinching worms from mud to wave in faces of screaming girls, boasting bruises and soda-pop burps like proud accolades, Nicholas Snider has never been known for his maturity.
  
  And why should he? How could he? Youngest of six, swaddled in adoration and fed endless attention, responsibility is an unknown flavour to Hedge’s palate.
  
  When he speaks, words crack the air like a spoon through caramel pudding. Attention-grabbing and lacking nutrition, all tough chewing and empty calories. With a head scraped clean of logical thought, plenty of whimsy can take root in an aquarium skull. Amongst pale and diluted currents, thin ribbonlike streams with neither rhyme nor reason. Flowering in the vase of a hollow socket, he finds the world and its people are often dizzying and not always easy to partake in.
  
  Density goes hand in hand with bravery. Harbouring a bubbling wellspring of equal portions headstrong and stupid, Hedge is but a grating blur of energy and determination. Overcompensating, obnoxiously eager, the first to spring hand into air, stood from chair with urgency: Hedge will do it! —Servient nature a need to be included, to feel useful.
  
  Confidence comforting, malaise tempered by stepping into shadow to splash grim corners in light, demean visage of danger into no more than shape and silhouette; presentation of damnation deters nothing. Leviathans are only clothes piled on a chair, colossal spiders only branch shadows against glass, deep wells of opaque nothingness only a very charming rug. He fears only the avian variety, and as such, is counter productively braver than most.
  
  Eyes wet with dew and tissues plugging nostrils— “Dude check my tooth. Is my tooth loose? Tooths?” —do not correlate to blood-lined enamel and his close-knit companionship with trouble. Akin to the delicate things sequestered to damp moss-laden towers, petal flesh soft-edged and humming with quaking blood, Hedge is very much a maiden in peril. Held hostage not by deceptive wolves or witches with their lime venom apples, but the cruel hand of his own, brilliant stupidity.
  
  Losing his path through fathomless lands, it always began as an inkling, deformed to the undercurrent drag of a black sea. Impulse built in flesh splitting apart seams of logic and floating them unfastened and unheard from his focus, sounding of nothing but eddying white noise. Try as he might to stave off compulsion, running cold as ice and just as vicious, pulse quickens and urge begins— you should help.
  
  Uncharacteristically gentle for a boy of his ruinous appearance, Hedge is sweet as a glucose cube and warm as butter smeared over toast. Unforeseen, endearingly dumb is a comforting attribute for many. Cooked soft, mashed with butter and lucuma, he never tires of being a space to rest, to listen, to talk about the expanse of all things meaningful and meaningless.
  
  Yet when a joke cuts a section too deep, The Jester's chisel and hammer, Hedge can only ingest the portion slice with a confused laugh. Crush it between teeth, let it slide down his throat as a tight, uncomfortable lump. Something dwells sensitive and bitter in the corner of his lips, but acceding aches a breadth less than kicking up a fuss, instead carpeting a horizon of content inclusion to hide the ugly words pressed into skin.
  
  He’ll let it curdle sour and hide hoarded in the hollow spaces of his chest, inedible. Hide the flicker beneath lashes and seal away vulnerability just to be worthy, for of course, he'll do anything to help.

Eyes smeared robin-egg blue and lips cracked magenta from wet rims of cask wine, cussing neighbours to slurred filth over chain mesh fences, white tank-top stained with bile and skin stretched translucently thin over bony hips; his mother seeped with languor and a miasma of cigarettes.
  
  He remembers their house brimming with strangers every weekend, air acrid to breathe and resonating with heavy metal music. Fridge rattled with every open and close, disturbing egg and expired condiment, raucous conversation and slushy sentiments exchanged outside his bedroom window; how the noise hushed him to sleep like off-set thunder, reverberating floorboards like a hive to meld into his very blood.
  
  Clinging to parental leg while she’d smooth hair in intoxicated stupor. Drinking the gentle nectar that oozed from fatiguing somnolence, youth is a blurred, fond reminiscence to Hedge. And as a child, one sees a child, thinks as a child, feels as one too. Scraped knees burning with sun-hot gravel embedded into flesh like bubbling caviar. A garage that hangs sour with kerosene, a pond of tadpoles, a cloud crown of pale cream piled onto a single pancake. It is loud and spirited, conspiring in shared delight only to fall victim to the sobriety of time’s slow catharsis.

  He’d only ever recognised her rich with hues of vivacity, staining mug rims with plummy lipstick and lowering shuttered lids of sour teal. Thick with somnolence and a spidery coat, Hedge remained wilfully ignorant to her vice shades of watercolour. Blotted pale and made of glass bone, she was always nearer to death than life.
  
  Imitation the sincerest form of flattery, games of house included twig cigarettes and juicebox liquor for chronicle realism. Albeit freckled and snot-nosed, there was shelter in the eyes of the Sixth Snider. An orchid not yet succumbed to gnashing saw of ice, surviving above an environment that could’ve, should’ve, sealed over and swallowed him whole.
  
  Childhood remains a vein that can never be exhumed, and there’d never been an available comparison to view his family as unconventional. Something that gave and took life, it is a tragedy in motion.
  
  Mistranslated as normal, every mother mistakes vicks vaporub for hair gel. Every mother stores products so long that they crumble to dust powder on the tongue. Every mother wears sunglasses and has a hard time tasting her food and every son has a responsibility to pull apart footwear for shoelaces strong enough to secure her upper arm. Soaking epidermis in needle and blotted veins, skin pocked, littered in tar constellations and rough as silt, it is good to be helpful.

  For a skull tenderised soft with mallets of Sabbath and Zep and a part-time attention-span that proved detrimental to completing highschool, Nicholas has always possessed the ears of a Pinscher. Growing up in the constant hum of noise, shaped by its comforting late-night lull, sounds weave in ropy, thick lines that feel almost palpable.
  
  Sometimes in only echoes, identifying a familiar car and footsteps of each family member, sometimes only in wounds, tired-eye teachers gobbling at flea-fed rumour, tongueless, swollen ghosts of gossip and scrutiny, wayward Sniders. They exist, knowingly, as the maligned side of [TBD CHARACTER HERE]’s family, and have watched reunions unfurl into disorder. Havoc has not stopped Hedge’s interest in breaching that expanse of difference, and he has haunted them like a clingy shadow from adolescence to Leavenworth.
  
  Aged with barbed hair and nebula skin, a dark veil is yet to be pulled free from the iris to meet Asphodel’s Meadow.
  
  He can match a pitch, play by ear, and when he hears his mother knocking, grovelling and clawing out the innards of his cupboards for cash, Hedge can only see the good. Empathy added up in his body, water and alkaline, it is the core of cut fruit, a source of light that always urges:

  Victor is laid back, good humored, friendly, and outgoing. He makes friendships easily wherever he goes. He's a calm, loving, and patient person and he gets very attached to people very quickly. On the surface, he's very much the golden retriever boyfriend. He also has a very strong need to feel needed and liked by the people around him and will bend over backwards to make that happen. A problem comes in when he attatches to someone who would take advantage, or when he uses trying to be liked by and helpful to others as a mechanism for ignoring his own mind.
  After his time in the airforce he struggles with feelings of safety and security, often feeling like the world around him is unstable. This has been exasperated by the events that lead up to him taking over care of Juliette. He's an attentive partner and parental figure, he's quick with a joke and always down for a good time, he also can't sleep at night and disassociates when he looks in the mirror too long. He's a good cook, he loves the feeling of freedom that comes with flying, he loves learning and studying languages, and adores his friends and family. He's also terrified of opening up to any of them.

  Victor was born and raised in Leavenworth. His father was an airman who'd left the service by the time Victor was born. He has an older sister, Layla, by three years who he looked up to his entire childhood. She joined the army out of high school and serves as an officer, visiting when she can. Since he could walk, he and his sister have had a habit of brawling, any time they're in the same city, it's on site. Do those kind of look and sound like real punches? yes. But are they affectionate? Also yes. He's not quite as close with his younger sister, who is more the artist type, and has been living in Seattle for the last few years. He still adores her, but she might describe him as 'overbearing' with a bit of an eyeroll.
  
  Victor was a ROTC kid in high school, he juggled good grades, a close friendgroup, varsity sports and a good family life and made it all look easy. It WAS easy for him back then, with a strong support system, good mental health, and clear rules of engagement. He knew exactly who he was and what the people around him needed from him and slipped into the role easily. He wasn't known for pushing boundaries in high school, beyond occasional teenage delinquency or pranks with his friends he was always careful to keep his record clean and color inside the lines.
  
  Victor enlisted after graduation, and got out at 21, after two tours in Afganistan. This kept him away from the group for a long time, but visited when he could. He came back around that time to live with his parents and reunite with friends as much as he could, but everything felt different. He started to get restless and picked up and moved across the country leaving what felt like practically overnight one night,\(maybe some DRAMA happened?) and picked up working food service in a new city.

  The good ole days

  The freedom that came with being on his own seemed to give Victor a new lease on life. Soon though, it became very clear he couldn't fall into the same routines and character he had played as a teenager, the last few years had changed him significantly and he didn't know how to deal with it or redefine himself. He fell into a bit of a party scene, initially to meet people, but it soon became an excuse to evade responsibilities or facing his own thoughts, and it worked wonderfully. The minor drinking problem he'd developed in the service evolved into a party drug problem. Things were incredible, he adored everyone he met, stayed out every night, loved the history and activity of the city, he fell in love, rigid rules he'd lived by seemed so much less important and tended to fall away, so did the dread and minor suicidal ideation that had been lingering in the back of his mind since the last time he came back from combat.
  
  In the harsh light of day, he was a mess, too fully absorbed in avoidant behaviors and getting through the day, paying rent for the month, to make lasting goals or maintain deeper relationships, jumping from relationship to relationship, and dropping off the radar of his friends and family for months at a time. He decided to take steps to get his life together a few years back, he needed something concrete to hold onto or work toward. When a close friend from the service he'd kept in contact with, Simon, called to say his wife was ill and things were getting hard to manage at home, Victor moved a couple hours to be closer, figuring it was at least an opportunity to help a friend and get himself out of a rut of his own making.
  
  

  Figuring it Out

  When they were serving, Victor and Simon had been ride or die. Simon had gotten married right before enlisting, and concieved a child right before they shipped out for the first time. Victor has seen the two of them on Facetime calls, and heard Simon drone on about Grace and little baby Juliette any time they had downtime. Simon heard all about the C6 friends, and Victors sisters, meeting most of them over Skype calls at one point or another.
  
  Helping out around the house and with Juliette while Grace was sick gave Victor something more concrete to do, and scratched the itch of missing his family and friends. He got closer to both of them, mostly working nights so he could help out with childcare during the day. He's always gotten along with Juliette, and he'd always liked kids. Simon had trouble dealing with things and seemed to take more and more time at work, until Victor was practically living with them, and Simon was more of a passing figure. He said it was needing more hours at work to cover medical expenses as things with Grace got worse, but the two were obviously tense, and Victor was very awkwardly caught in the middle when he'd only meant to help out a friend and babysit occasionally, he'd become the most stable figure in Juliettes life almost by accident.
  
  After a very stressful year and a half, Grace took an unexpected turn for the worst, and died a bit after the holidays. Simon, a now mostly absent father, obviously didn't take it well. Once the affairs were settled, Victor confronted him, but wasn't willing to just leave Juliette to see what would happen at that point. After that, Simon vanished for a week, they filed missing persons reports only for him to pop up in a rehabilitation facility a few hours away. This became a pattern once they worked out that Simon had never been working late after all. He would come back, shower Juliette in gifts, promise to be a better dad, relapse, vanish, and try to get clean and pop up again. Simon's family had never been stable, he'd joined the military to get away from them in the first place, Grace's parents were older, they wanted to be in their granddaughters life but didn't have the capacity to raise her full time.
  
  Victor has been taking care of Juliette mostly on his own for about a year now, and has had official custody for a couple months. He's debating wether to stick around after the holidays for a while in hopes that his parents can help out.
