Snippet of a Mermaid Story

Hello to whoever's reading this! I'm being 'commissioned' to write a short novel for an artist based off of their art, so I figured I'd post the prologue here.. Mind you, it's still in it's rough draft phases, so constructive criticism is very much appreciated. -- Lights suspended in opalescent air pockets bobbled and flickered in the quiet calm of the sleeping palace, casting dancing shadows along the rough coral walls. The Grand Hall was shrouded in darkness, pierced only by the light of the candles and the rogue shards of moonlight that dared to travel so far down into the briny depths. One thing, however, disturbed the gentle silence of the dimly lit halls. Bubbles sprang to life within the now churning water, floating and rising in wake of a powerful tail. Black hair twisted and curled in tendrils, trailing behind the curvy female cutting smoothly through the shadows like she was nothing more than a memory, fleeting and swift. Olivia flicked her gaze from passage to passage as she passed, her heart thumping wildly in her chest like a frightened animal. Far off, the snores of the castle’s residents floated through the halls, assuring the escapee that her plans were going smoothly, and according to plan. Edging along the deep blue coral wall, panic suddenly gripped her heart as the sound of a tail beating the water drew closer. Ducking into an alcove that almost seemed to suck the very light out of the air, Olivia held her breath as the guard passed by her hiding spot. She had to bite back a giggle as the bubbles that rose in his wake tickled up against her stomach, and almost yelped in alarm as the guard whirled around. Shaking in fear, she pressed farther back against the rough coral, praying silently that he wouldn't see her in the near pitch black darkness. Seconds passed that felt like centuries, until the guard turned around hesitantly and continued on his way. Exhaling slowly, Olivia steadied her shaking hands and slipped back into the murky halls, heading in the opposite direction of the guard, towards her father, The King's, study room. Crossing through the silent halls, the trembling in her hands grew with every beat of her tail. What if I get caught? What would.. What would she do to me? What would he think of me? Every thought crowded in her mind like unwanted party guests, loud and unruly and intrusive. Finally reaching the heavy driftwood door, she forced it open swiftly and shut it as quickly as she could without making a sound. Slumping down against the back of the door, Olivia crumpled to the floor, her head in her hands, small sobs muffling against the soft skin of her palms. Tears of anger and frustration slipped down her cheeks and pooled down at the base of her neck, until everything stopped. Looking up slowly, Olivia brushed away her tears away brusquely and rose up steadily, a harsh sort of fury burning behind her eyes. She made a promise to herself right then and there, that she wouldn't let her mother or her father, her abuser and her witness, she wouldn't let them hold her back anymore. She was her own person, and she wasn't about to let them haunt her psyche anymore.

So far, so good! I honestly don't have much of anything negative to say on the first read. Keep it up!
