THE SKULL HEART
An artifact that plays a major role within the Skullgirls universe. Every seven years, it grants a wish to a woman. The wish can be of any magnitude, but it comes at a price if the woman's heart is impure: the wish will be twisted and she will become a Skullgirl. The Skullgirl is controlled by the will of the Skull Heart, though a woman of particularly strong heart and will can resists its influence to a certain extent.
It is unclear when the Skull Heart first appeared in the world, but it is known to have been created by the Trinity The Skull Heart itself claims that it is meant to bring about the world's destruction, but this may only be a "programmed" aspect of its personality (and thus, non-indicative of the Trinity's true goal).
At some unknown point, Annie's mother used the Skull Heart to wish for her daughter to remain a child forever. While the circumstances of this event are scarcely known, the affair likely affected Annie in a negative respect seeing as she promotes Anti-Skullgirls propaganda.
Fourteen years later, Double delivered the Skull Heart to Selene Contiello, which led to the Medici Mafia coming after her. Seeing her family gunned down by the mob, Selene wished them back to life with the Skull Heart. The artifact twisted her wish by transforming her into a Skullgirl - thereby allowing her to bring back her family as undead minions.
Seven years later, the Skull Heart was at the center of a massive war between three nations. It came into the possession of Queen Nancy, ruler of the Canopy Kingdom. She wished for the three nations to stop fighting, and the Skull Heart obliged - by transforming Queen Nancy into the most powerful Skullgirl the world had yet seen. The three nations were forced to unite against the Skullgirl before she destroyed the entire world.
Seven years after Queen Nancy's defeat, the Skull Heart resurfaced in the hands of Marie, an orphan girl suffering under the abusive slavers of Rommelgrad. She wished to take revenge against the ones responsible for her slavery, becoming a Skullgirl in the process. After destroying the slavers, the newly-minted Bloody Marie began targeting anyone and everyone connected to the Medici Mafia, who backed the slavers. Due to her strong will, Marie was able to resist the Skull Heart's influence and focus on her wish.
Marie died by the hands of the parasite-hosting schoolgirl Filia and she uses the Skull Heart to give Painwheel a normal life, at the cost of her becoming the current Skullgirl that she is today.
THE CANOPY KINGDOM
The vast sprawling Kingdom within which Skullgirls takes place. Ruled by the Renoir royal family, it is a prosperous land which contrasts sights of beauty to scenes of despair. Vaguely similar to 1940s America, the Canopy Kingdom is home to millions of humans, Dagonians, Ferals, and the giant-sized Gigans. This kingdom is blessed with a very socially-conscious royal family, a strong military, and amazing technology. King Renoir’s ruthless war campaigns lead to explosive technological and cultural growth, investing a lot into combining technology and magic to take on the other 2 countries during the Grand War.
There's a lot of discrimination against minority groups like Ferals. Parasite hosts specifically are heavily ostracized as hosting a Parasite is seen as taboo. While the Renoir Crown rules the Canopy Kingdom, the Medici rules its sizable underworld. The capital of the Canopy Kingdom is Canopolis. Currently the Canopy Kingdom is in peace with the other kingdoms and countries. Despite this the kingdom itself is not at peace as a new Skullgirl is currently causing chaos within the kingdoms great city, New Meridian.
Taking place in the heart of New Meridian's River King Casino, the decor consists of slot machines, blackjack tables, and a host of gamblers looking to win big. The casino is a Medici Mafia hangout and many members can be found there.
Serving as the base for the titular Medici Mafia, Medici Tower is a towering skyscraper that pierces New Meridian's skyline.
Located in a quiet suburb, Maplecrest is home to a diverse collection of people and animals who wander the town's peaceful streets. Aptly named for its abundance of maple trees, Maplecrest serves to be a stark contrast to the busy hustle and bustle of neighboring New Meridian. Houses with picketed fencing wind down hilly roads far into the distance, the roads themselves littered with autumn leaves, freshly falling from the maples above. Despite its outwardly appearance as a gentle neighborhood, however, Maplecrest manages to be the host of many street scuffles carried out by the cast of Skullgirls.
Akin to a "Chinatown", this stage is a small but bustling residential and business district by the coast, accented by bold, clashing colors and chimney pots resembling coral. The buildings are connected by an extensive network of wooden decks, walkways and stairs, with strings of jellyfish lanterns hanging overhead. A tram runs between the areas above and below sea level throughout the day, when the tide is low. This is also when the lowest level is exposed: the walls are covered in graffiti, the ground littered with trash bags thrown from above, and everything is tinted green from algae.
At night, the tide has caused the lowest level to flood, rendering it inaccessible. The district sparkles with light from the buildings, lanterns and many neon signs, all reflected in the water. Many restaurants stay open until late at night, enticing people out for good food and a relaxing evening walking along the brightly lit walkways.
