signal lost (a sci-fi survival horror)
://signal_lost...
introduction
plot:
"Send more, send more, send more, sendโ" The employee paused the continuous, almost rhythmic chanting from the distress call.
"That's it?" His superior asked, brows furrowed and arms crossed over his expensive, pressed suit.
"It continues for another ten minutes, sir. Just over and over..."
"Don't tell anyone about this. And I mean anyone. Delete it. Now."
The employee gulped.
***
A week ago a distress call was transmitted from a mining and exploration colony spaceship, the MHS-Desdemona. Attempts to hail and contact the colony has resulted in no signal or response from its inhabitants; which is alarming considering the 635 crew it bolsters. The corporation responsible for the expedition, the Melton-Hisano Corp, has scrounged up an external crew the following week to investigate the distress call and report back to what has happened to the MHS-Desdemona and its inhabitants.
Offered a large pay-out for their discretion and cooperation, the external crew are travelling to the distress signal's location, via their "own" (company-owned) spaceship, the SS-Azael.
The newly-acquainted crew of the SS-Azael are going to encounter a lot more than they bargained for.
A hell of a lot more.
preface
hello my fellow horror fans. idiot or connor here, thanks for checking out this interest check. it is an idea i've tried before so if it looks familiar i knowwwww. i could definitely come up with other big-brained ideas but this one always come back to me. in the past i had issues with my own time constraints and then issues with lagging posts which slowed down the flow. however, this time i'm determined to give this one a go again as i love the idea and have some lovely things planned for our characters!
right now this is to garner interest and if enough people are interested I will get the cs and ooc threads up! this is heavily inspired by all the great survival-horror-sci-fi genre media, such as dead space, alien, prey, the thing. if you have heard/watched/read/played any of these then you know what kind of roleplay you are in store for!
if not, this is basically a roleplay that centres around a crew which have been tasked in finding out what the hell happened to the once-thriving mhs-desdemona. this isn't some space discovery or slice of life roleplay, this is a survival horror roleplay which will place our characters in some horrific situations. this may or may not revolve around infection and extra-terrestrial lifeforms. who knowssssssss. hehe.
so give everything a read and show your interest!

setting:
In the year 2070, the United Nations announced that urgent solutions were needed to address overpopulation and the diminishment of natural resources on Earth. The solution came in the form of rapid expansion into space exploration that led to finding new veins of resources, space stations to hold the ever-growing population and terraforming on potentially habitable planets. The space industry became a lucrative venture, with most technological corporations booming; this bought in countless competitors wanting their own share which in hand made space travel more readily available.
By the year 2152, Earth is not the only habitable place for humans, with successful terraforming transforming the once prospective planet, Kepler-62f, into the aptly named: Second Earth. A cheaper alternative is found in the several space stations orbiting Earth โ housing and offering jobs to thousands of humans. Technological and scientific advancements have skyrocketed since the fixation of space exploration โ faster space travel, cybernetics, synthetic food and other astonishing achievements. However, all these advancements can't hide the disparity between socioeconomic classes and the crippling effects of capitalism on the working class.

important stuff
01.
First and foremost, this is a semi-advanced literate roleplay which will not suffice with one or two sentence replies. I'm not expecting novel-length replies or perfection though, so errors and such are fine (I make them constantly). Also, considering the themes (namely gore and horror) I, unfortunately, ask for all applicants to be over the age of 18 to avoid both myself and others feeling uncomfortable or limited to what can be shared and discussed.
Even if you are over the age of 18, do note that the characters will be subjected to horrific situations that will require players to delve into the human psyche when experiencing high-pressure situations and unimaginable horrors.
02.
I hope to have players replying to the thread at least once or twice a week to keep the story flowing and interest piqued. This is one of the reasons the roleplay didn't work out last time. I will also be using discord for plotting and ooc discussions which I hope all players are active in to allow ourselves to become comfortable and friendly with each other!
I will not tolerate any bullying and disrespect in any form on the discord server! Save the fighting between the characters.
03.
This is not first-come, first-served! This means roles cannot be reserved. It will be based on an application basis (not to discredit writers but to find a diverse and quality cast which I think will fit into the world and story). If you want to create multiple characters and you believe wholeheartedly that is something you can juggle, I am more than happy to accommodate for that. However, lets just say there might be more of a possibility of one dying, hehe.
While there are over 15 roles, I will only be accepting around 8 players, with the rest of the roles being filled by NPCs!
04.
If you're wondering why there is nothing about what is actually happening on the MHS-Desdemona, it is done on purpose! To avoid meta-gaming and to add a whiff of mystery, both players and their respective characters will be left in the dark on the happenings from the start. As the roleplay progresses, what is happening, the origins, the way everything works and other tidbits of lore will be revealed at the discretion of the characters.
This also allows for characters to make mistakes and wrong decisions (since the players themselves don't know what is right and wrong!) which will have its own repercussions. Where the story leads, who survives and the extent of the mystery that unfolds is up to the discretion of the characters.
05.
The fate of your characters is ultimately up to you. I will not kill your character without your permission, yet there will be repercussions for characters who engage in risky behaviour constantly. Furthermore, this doesn't mean there won't be death. In fact, there will be quite a bit of death and gore. Most will be done through NPCs, whose lives and status are ultimately up to the characters and how they engage with them and situations.

lore
glossary:
melton-hisano corp (mhc)
The MHC is a multinational (American and Japanese) conglomerate, consisting of two merged corporations: Melton Limited Corp and the Hisano Corporation. A household name since 2090, the corporation is the leading technology suppliers for both commercial and industrial clients. Well-known for its manufacturing of synthetics and spaceships to everyday household appliances, MHC is a widely successful and powerful corporation. In the past ten years, MHC has been branching out to more non-manufacturing interests with mining and exploration of extra-terrestrial technology to stay ahead of the competition.
Recently, the corporation is under fire for one of its flagship vessels randomly combusting and killing those on board which has made national headlines. Another scandal or incident could lead to major financial repercussions.
mhs-desdemona
The MHS-Desdemona was built and owned by the MHC with its sole purpose to mine and explore for extra-terrestrial technology on surrounding planets and moons. A colonial expedition, the corporation hired an extensive team of varying professions along with their families (considering the long expedition). Its bolstering crew of 635 inhabitants has been undergoing their expeditions for the past eight years. Until recently, they were investigating a strange electromagnetic signal from a distant moon. A year later, they went completely silent after the distress call.
ss-azael
The SS-Azael is a small spaceship which was built by the MHS, who have hired a small crew of outsiders to investigate the distress call on MHS-Desdemona. They are willing to pay the crew a large sum for investigating the distress call and discovering why the entire crew of the MHS-Desdemona have gone radio silent. The reason for hiring an outside-crew is to avoid any connections to the corporation in case of a scandal which could cripple the company.
second earth
Previously known as Kepler-62f, this planet was considered the best candidate for terraforming. While it is now habitable, living on Second Earth is exclusive for those who are influential or wealthy; causing an uproar from humanitarian organisations who believe it should be readily available for everyone. Regardless, only the elite and the workers who sustain the planet (plus their families) inhabit Second Earth.
earth
Earth is still suffering from overpopulation with the climate only getting warmer with the coming years. Rainfall and snow are incredibly rare occurrences now, with mostly the lower socio-economic, the elderly and people who despise space inhabiting Earth still. Most major cities still remain order and their former glory, yet more desolate places are left ungoverned and are mainly avoided by the general public.
space stations
To immediately combat overpopulation, influential countries created their own space stations to house their citizens. These countries include the United States, China, Canada, Japan, India, United Kingdom, Russia, Brazil, France, Germany, Switzerland, Mexico and South Korea. These space stations are governed by their respective countries, yet all (and space itself) are under the universal laws of the "Space Nation Federation" which is made up of a representative from each of the thirteen nations inhabiting space.
Most of the space stations mirror major cities โ providing education, jobs, entertainment and housing. It is mainly made up of the middle class and those whose occupations are pertinent to maintaining the space stations.
Note: individuals can inhabit their own spaceships (if they can afford it or are part of a team/expedition).

characters
roles:
the captain [npc]
The SS-Azael needs a captain for its newly-acquainted crew. They are in charge of the expedition and safety of their crew. How far are they willing to go to save someone?
the representative [npc]
Of course the corp isn't going to let the crew go alone, they need eyes and ears aboard the SS-Azael to make sure everyone abides by the MHC's standards. I wonder if their allegiance to the corp will save them from this mess?
the comms officer [npc]
A linguistic specialist who is able to run the PA and broadcasting systems, this individual will help keep communication flowing between everyone. Unfortunately for this crew, communication won't be the only thing flowing.
the undercover reporter [npc]
Now how did they get on board? Under the guise of medical personnel, this individual is convinced MHC is trying to cover up something. This story will be a page-turner for sure โ if people believe them.
the pilot
An expedition via space travel wouldn't be possible without someone who knows how to fly and handle spaceships and aircrafts. I wonder how they fly under pressure?
the chief of security
Skilled in providing intel via the surveillance camera system and offering security on board, this individual acts as a police officer for the ship by upholding the law. They are going to have to bend the rules a little if they want to survive this thing.
the soldier
Who knows what they will find on MHS-Desdemona, thus the corp elected to hire a skilled soldier who knows to fight and handle weaponry. Nothing could have trained them for this.
the veteran[npc]
Leaving the military life behind for whatever reason, the veteran's found solace in a new life. However, a veteran's income doesn't put food on the table. Strapped for cash, they are going to do what they do best and hopefully for the last time. Let's hope they aren't too rusty.
the doctor
Someone could be seriously injured upon the MHS-Desdemona, thus a doctor is integral. They are going to have their hands full.
the nurse
A doctor always needs a dutiful nurse, someone who is there to support their patients through thick and thin. I wonder if nurses get taught how to deal with homicidal patients?
the field biologist
The study of wildlife and plants is not only fascinating but might prove useful on the expedition. Yet, how does one study something they have never seen before?
the microbiologist
The SS-Azael has a state of the art lab aboard and it would be a shame to let it go to waste. They are proficient in the study and examination of microbes and diseases. I wonder what they will call this new disease โ if they survive that is?
the astrophysicist
In space you need someone well-versed with the universe and all of its celestial bodies. This expedition may lead to discovering a new phenomena, but will they have time to crack the code before it is too late?
the software engineer
They know computers like the back of their hand, which the corp believes will be beneficial for the expedition. There is no hiding behind the computer screen this time.
the mechanical engineer
Machinery is their bread and butter which is pivotal in repairing the MHS-Desdemona's communication. I hope they have a mean swing with their wrench.
the psychologist
The corp apparently cares about the mental wellbeing of their staff. Studying the human psyche has taught them about people and their motivations. I hope they brushed up on their techniques, cause they sure as hell are gonna need them.
the forensic pathologist
An interesting choice to bring someone along who studies the dead and their cause of death. Maybe the corp is trying to cover all bases or is expecting the worst? One thing is for sure, they are going to have a lot of cadavers to cut open.
the cook
Maybe not as integral as the others aboard the SS-Azael, but the cook knows how to turn that poorly-tasting synthetic food into tolerable meals. Plus, at least someone knows how to use a knife.
the bounty hunter
A head hunter, this individual's latest target has apparently fled to the MHS-Desdemona. Luckily the corp isn't going to turn their nose up to someone handy with a gun. I wonder if the bounty's reward is worth their life?
the family member
Knowing someone could be in danger, especially family, will make someone stop at nothing to find out the truth. They knew someone aboard the MHS-Desdemona and for whatever reason found themselves with a ticket to their last location. Let's hope it isn't their last location either.
the stowaway [npc]
Fleeing from something or someone, the stowaway was able to board the SS-Azael under everyone's noses. Yet, it didn't take long for hunger to set in and to reveal themselves to the crew. Too far from any station, the captain decided they must pull their weight. They really should of chosen the other ship at the dock to climb aboard.
the unlisted
You have an idea for a role that wasn't listed? Let me know and we can workshop something.
