It was supposed to be a Halloween party unlike any other - and it was. The students of the fraternities and sororities at the university had chosen a real haunted school, Ratchford University, at which to hold their party.

Ratchford University had been an elite boarding college that closed back in the early 20th century. It was built during the Victorian Era and had the perfect gothic look and feel for what the party’s organizers were looking for. They planned on a professional band, haut cuisine theatrical catering. (The food was supposed to look like something out of horror or sci fi movies. There was to be a costume contest with real scholarships as the prizes awarded by category with scoring based on both technical and artistic meric. Originality was required.

Costumes were to be required and appraised upon arrival. Any costume not meeting the “dress code” was to be turned away. All attendance was required to be stag. Dates were to be assigned upon arrival - by LOTTERY. Masks were NOT allowed to be removed. The haunted school would be opened to the partiers two hours before dark and the gates shut promptly at sunset - not to be reopened until sunrise.

Oh the students had been duly informed that Ratchford was a hellmouth that opened every year on All Hallow’s Eve. But did they listen? Of course not. They were college students. The gates of hell were sealed promptly at sunset with great celebration and the party cranked itself up to a dull roar. Nowhere was off limits save for the kitchen where the catering.

As the witching hour approached they counted down as if it were New Year’s. This was done to a ritual “sacrifice” of 12 ‘virgins’ - the only ones not in a costume - brides for the Dark One. They were the entertainment - and the participants of the wet T shirt contest. They did their dancing on top of alters, loosely lashed with ‘vines’.

Then things got freaky.

The grounds began to shake. The altars practically came alive as the vines came alive. Monster roars echoed through the halls. Demonic laughter bellowed. Twelve demons appeared to take their brides / sacrifices. These demons stood at 7 to 8 feet in height each.

A horde of ‘hellhounds’ (about two dozen) began flooding into the main room and ripping the closest students to shreds. The smaller breeds were the size of a large wild boar. The larger ones were the size of small bulls, though more squat.

Our RP opens shortly after the stroke of midnight and the escape of several of the students who have fled the carnage in the Great Hall.

Ratchford University

A map would be meaningless. The university is no longer three dimensional. rather it is far larger on the inside than the outside. It has grown rooms from the nightmares of its former student and residents. (It wasn’t always a school.) The outside of the building as as shown in the picture. However, the estate grounds cover some 50 acres, surrounded by a stone wall some 12 feet high. The wall is now covered with demon vines and topped with razor sharp barbed wire similar to that used by concentration camps or prisons. This is run through with 6 foot spikes that appear to be made of bone.

On the estate grounds there is a tool shed, small cemetery (about the size of a football field), a stable, kennels. (They used to have fox hunts and teach equestrian arts.) There is a maze, gardens, and small lake. (If you think the water is safe, you deserve to die.)

The school’s interior includes a Great Hall, kitchen, dorms, mess hall, basketball court, olympic pool, Library and classrooms. The classrooms may have teachers in them - which sure as hell probably won’t be much fun. (The teachers are going to be some named NPC’s.) There will be a boiler room, basement sections, torture chambers, Detention and so many other “fun” places.

There IS no outside the Wall. If you manage to somehow ‘escape’ via this route, you will arrive on the grounds in some other section - typically not a good place.

There IS a Day and Night, although the Day is more of a fog filled gloom with dark clouds, occasional thunder and lightning.

About the RP

The university the students came from is in northeastern America. Students should be either American or exchange students. This will be an RP about survival. Each player will control a main character, plus have a few NPC’s to be used as “red shirts” or extras. The extras get used as victims for the monsters while the main characters escape.

Joining the RP

Once your character is Approved you may pick a location and join in. PLEASE do not just jump into a scene without getting the blessing of the others present in that scene. I will DELETE such posts at the request of those members. However, I DO want to get members involved in roleplay with one another. So please make room for new members. I simply don’t want the flow of a scene to be interrupted by people that want to just jump in.

I will also NOT tolerate generating a scene to gather a bunch of bad critters and leading them to others. This is a Banish offense - unless the other members involved approve in advance. By my way of thinking this borders on bunnying.

This does NOT apply to the RP’s author. However, in general I have no plans to do this. Where I WILL do so is at specific locations - most notably classrooms, pool, the lake, the Great Hall .. Once you learn which locations are almost always inhabited, you may avoid them.

Character Design

Please Note: I WILL delete characters that don’t adhere to design rules, so read carefully. I’ll PM you with clean up requirements, then allow a few days to fix at most. So have them saved somewhere off site in case you get pulled away by RL before you can make fixes.

Main characters should have a complete bio. PLEASE keep images sized so that they don’t fill half a page, but with enough detail they give a good idea what you look like. I will NOT approve a character with an oversized pic. Sorry guys. As an alternative you can hide the pic with a spoiler tag.

NPC’s should be added in the SAME POST as your Main. You do NOT need as much detail for these. Basically a physical description, their stereotype and Fraternity / Sorority. Then maybe a brief personality. Note whether the NPC is Open or Closed. Open is available for others to use. You may want your NPC’s to be fellow fraternity / sorority members.

The Band, Sacrifices, and Catering staff are NOT available as NPC’s. Only other students.

Main NPC’s are a special case. These would be your Dates. One goal would be to try to keep your date alive - even if you don’t like him or her. But feel free to dangle them out there where they can get you into so much trouble.

Fraternities and Sororities

I am NOT necessarily looking for real ones. I prefer fictional ones, but really the emphasis is on the Greek concepts. (LOL, I grew up on movies like Animal House and Revenge of the Nerds.)

Tri Alpha - your basic Jocks

Add a brief description of your character’s sorority or fraternity with your CS. I am planning to introduce a character with a real fraternity. He's a musician.

Costumes

Costumes should be of the quality seen on shows like Face Off, or some of the higher quality costumes seen at Comicon, Gencon, etc. No lame costumes please.

Monsters

I will leave the naming of monsters up to you. I figure the students would do that - come up with their own nicknames for the creatures. Each species will have specific abilities, habits, diets. Some will have weaknesses. There will be places that some creatures simply will not or cannot go. For example an aquatic creature won’t go on land. Some may be afraid of or harmed by light. Some may be blind and hunt by other senses. Most will not work together without either a demon or teacher controlling them.

Demons and Teachers

Demons are the male instructors. There are also female instructors. As one might guess they tend to spend more time where teachers would do so.

General Rules

  • All site rules apply
  • No God Modding, Bunnying, Metagaming, etc.
  • Romance is fine, but fade-to-black for those mature scenes (18+ stuff)

Writing Rules

  • Posts must be of good writing skills, and generally a minimum of three paragraphs. Really I am looking for better than that. I want paragraphs that aren’t two sentences long. Good content. Use third person, past tense.
  • Characters need to interact. While I realize that dialogue is challenging for some, it will be a requirement. Watch for examples of how to make speech more noticeable. (Most usually use boldface. Some add color.)
  • Try to stick to one or two posts a day, giving others a chance to post. What I do NOT want is to have two characters bouncing back and forth with short one paragraph posts. If you want to do that, build up a Joint Post in PM's, then have one of you copy and paste it, cleaned up for spelling and grammar, what clarity as to what character is doing / saying what.
  • As a minimum members are expected to post at least every other day - unless most of the RP is on hold for a scene between a couple characters. Then those characters need to wrap their scene up. The idea here is to not keep other members waiting.

Each Thread should begin with a preface of:

Title (if possible)

Location

Time:

Characters present: (include character and member name with a tag)

Subsequent posts need only use the Thread title.

A horde of ‘hellhounds’ (about two dozen) began flooding into the Great Hall. The smaller breeds were the size of a large wild boar. The larger ones were the size of small bulls, though more squat. The hellhounds began ripping the closest students to shreds. Most students panicked and began to bolt for the doors. Some simply froze in place too terrified to move. Others simply hesitated and found themselves being trampled.

Those who froze up were destined to become puppy chow. Those who tried to rescue them suffered very good odds of joining them. This was a survival situation in which it was every man for himself and only the strong or very quick would survive. The only thing that saved many of the weaker members of the crowd was sheer numbers. The monsters had a limited number. They could only grab so many targets.

Most of the students made it into the corridors to try to scatter. The hellhounds didn’t pursue very far. The demons had trained them to remain close by during the Wedding - and the demons had their priorities. But then there would be other monsters inhabiting the school grounds as the students would soon learn. These, too, needed to eat - and other things. The students were a supply of fresh meat long awaited.

To add to the confusion the students quickly discovered the geography of the school had changed. It had grown in magnitude. There was now an estate ground, several other buildings, stables, gardens, an observatory. They wouldn’t all make sense - at least not compared to a modern campus. But some were devoted to disciplines. Of course, the students would also soon learn that getting to those building would be extremely dangerous as monsters roamed the grounds in some areas - monsters that were either hungry or in search of victims to join them as permanent residents.

Amber had left her date behind long before the witching hour. Truth to tell she had only accepted the assignment of her date to get into the party. He hadn’t really been her type. And her date had had his eye on other women. She had made the guy look like a midget. And she tended to intimidate guys by her sheer height.

Her response to the sudden arrival of the demons had been to freeze. Their throaty, deep voices in an alien tongue left her feet rooted to the ground. Panic spread through her so mind numbing that she very nearly lost control over her bladder. And she might very well have joined the ranks of the first victims if not for the shriek of a smallish girl as a hellhound charged her.

With a mind all their own Amber’s hands flew into action. She acted without thought. There was a threat. She had swords. She knew how to use them. Both peace bonds broke in the same instant and the blades swung out as though a single weapon pointed directly at the charging hellhound’s throat. It was a stance she used in her florentine style quite often. the advantage of the stance was that it was tougher to judge the distance of the tips.

The charging hound was one of the larger species. And one would have expected the hound’s mass to bowl Amber over. Instead the blades pierced the hound’s neck as one. The creature’s mass forced the blade to penetrate to the hilt. Amber’s arms shuddered under the sudden impact. Her feet slid nearly two feet backwards on the floor stopping butt cold. Instinctively she forced the hilts apart like a giant pair of scissors and the head rolled off to one side.

No longer paralyzed with fear Amber spun and scooped up the girl that had screamed with one arm and sprinted toward the doors.

Witching Hour Pt 1

Great Hall (heading towards Library)

At the stroke of midnight

Characters present:

Julia Jang, Alvin King, Yulia Praskovya @Darth Pai

When Julia was introduced to her chosen date, she wasn't exactly pleased nor was she upset with him. She couldn't see his face but he was definitely tall and had a large build. He introduced himself as Alvin King and with that, Julia knew exactly who he was. A member of Tri Alpha, a fraternity that's stereo typically known to be for the jocks of the university. Julia was sure that she had met Mr. King once or twice during the parties and gatherings that she attended but she never interacted with him for too long. Then again, she didn't interact with many for long. However, Julia did know that he was a somewhat decent man. He wasn't the type to refuse a drink but he was responsible enough to say no if he was the designated driver. So, to be a proper partner, or "date", to Alvin, Julia stayed by his side during the majority of the party.

Well, it could've also been vice versa. Alvin was rather worried when he met his partner. Julia Jang was a very well known woman who was both successful and popular in many ways. Out of her sorority, she was voted the third most likely to succeed in the future, and that's saying something since a good part of Gamma Sigma Mu are women who strive for great achievements. However, she seemed like an okay person, not that Alvin really worried about the fact that she was going to murder him in his sleep or anything. It was just rather intimidating to be around a person like her. However, it did have its advantages. Beautiful and sophisticated people seemed to flock towards Julia, they held intellectual discussions like they were normal conversations. However, there was one girl who stood out from all of those people to surrounded Ms. Jang.

Yulia K. Praskovya was indeed a gorgeous woman, her costume even showed off her very fit figure without revealing too much skin. Most people knew her as Leah. It seemed that she was almost always around Julia, even going as far as leaving her date to chit chat a little with the other woman. She wasn't exactly the smartest person in the room so when they held those nerd-like topics, Yulia seemed to be a little left out and would go off for a bit to dance. She was usually found somewhere in the middle of a circle or at least on the sidelines, cheering the people on. However, when the room began to shake and grave voices filled the air, Yulia was one of the first people who began to run out the door. As she ran, she scanned the crowd for familiar faces, which was quite difficult due to the fact that everyone was in costumes but she could remember their costumes.

Julia was somewhere in the corner, chatting softly with others about some sort of intellectual topic when it happened. Initially, she thought it was some sort of prank or entertainment that occurred normally during the party. However, when she heard saw one of the frequent attenders of this Halloween party run towards the door, she automatically knew that something was wrong. Before Julia had time to think, she was swept off her feet and over the shoulder of a large person who she recognized as her date. Alvin was a very tall man, he stood over most of the other people in the room, giving Julia a good view of what was happening behind them. Although Alvin was running and weaving his way through the crowd, it gave her a proper glimpse of the demons and hell hounds that were attacking those unlucky people who were caught.

She looked at them in horror as the hell hounds ripped through their costume and flesh. The first blood had been spilled already and although Julia majored in medicine, she couldn't help but feel like puking at the sight of the scene. Covering her mouth with her right hand, Julia couldn't tear her eyes away from the hell hounds and their victims. The sounds of people screaming and shrieking all seemed to disappear for a moment when Julia saw one of her sorority sisters get trampled by the panicking crowd. Julia's vision flashed black and white as her brain worked furiously to process everything that was happening. She was so focused on that picture that she didn't know they were already outside, slowing to a jog.

"Are you alright?" Alvin's words snapped Julia out of her frozen state, causing her to open and close her mouth like a fish out of water. The taller of the two looked down at the other, and although the costume covered his face, the worry in his voice was evident. They seemed to be on the third story of the building, inside what seemed to be in the library since there were multiple shelves of books lined up one after another. Alvin had set Julia down on one of the seats of the tables and took a seat in front of her to rest his legs. He was panting and sweat was beginning to drip down his forehead from the overall stress of "running for his life". Literally.

Julia stared over at Alvin, her eyes wide with shock. After realizing what she was doing, her pride got the better of her and she immediately began to fix her composure. Taking a few deep breaths, looking away from Mr. King, Julia closed her eyes and rolled her shoulder back. She thought about what had just happened. Was it really real? Were those people actually killed? Julia was lucky enough for Alvin to have picked her up or she could have been dog food. A shiver ran down her spine, Julia opened her eyes and stared at the dressed up man before her. "Yes. I'm fine." Julia's gaze then trailed around the silent library. The only light sources they had was the natural, eerie moonlight that streamed in through the windows and a few lamps set around the library. Even so, Julia wasn't exactly sure if everything that she was seeing was true.

Katsurou had gone to this costume party knowing that it would be the perfect way to show off his costume. As everyone else he was "assigned" a date at the entrance of the large party. He and his date didn't really care for each other. Though they stayed together most of the time, there back's were turned from each other. Katsu had talked to his friends whilst his date talked to hers.

Katsu had met a large array of people at this party. Many of which were pretty cool, so to say. He had seen about 2 Shreks, 5 Wonder Women, way to much superheros, a druagr knight, and many more. All of the costumes were amazing, many of them were highly detailed as well. He had posed for a few pictures, and he asked a few other people for pictures. This party had faintly reminded him of the Comic Con conventions his mother would take him to.

Everything was fun and going well, until the ground started shaking and the un-human creatures appeared. He watched as the large quadruped tore students apart and trample others. This had reminded him all to much of an anime he had recently watched, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls. Remembering the events that had happened in the anime, he knew it would be best to not go anywhere alone. He then turned to his party, who had by now ran out of the room.

Katsu's instincts then kicked in as a large bull sized creature charged at him. Only thinking for himself he ran into and out of a large group of fleeing students. The creature had charged into the group, killing and injuring a dozen or so. After Katsu recovered he started running down a nearby hallway and then up a few stairs, thinking that it would be more safe up stairs. Once he got to what he thought was the 3rd floor he ran int a nearby classroom. Once in there he barricaded the windows, but what he saw outside of the windows were more hellish then that of what he saw in the large hall. Once he was done he set up a "defensive" position, laying desks and chairs to make a makeshift wall.

Witching Hour Pt 1

Great Hall (headed toward Library)

Shortly after midnight.

Characters present:

Eric Blackwell @Mitheral

Eric looked around. He had made it out of the Great Hall, into the corridors with half a dozen of the larger hounds hot on his tail. That was ironic as he actually had a tail in his costume. But in the wake of seeing students literally ripped in half, the hounds fighting over the pieces, he wasn’t seeing any humor in his situation. He had lost his date in all the confusion. She had been cute too.

The hounds seemed uninterested in pursuing very far out of the Great Hall - down a couple corridors - and before long the clumps of students began to diminish and grow smaller as they scattered or grouped up. Despite being a very social individual Eric followed an instinct to avoid the larger groups.

As near as he could tell this section of the building had been devoted to theatrical arts. That made sense with the Great Hall being located here. Part of him wanted to circle back around to get backstage. But that was truly too close to the demons.

Demons. As insane as that thought was he knew it was a fact. He knew stage magic could do some incredible things. But that had been all too real. Some of the hounds howled in the distance, pitching their voices to induce fear in their prey. His stomach lurched at the sound.

Once he was finally alone and no longer being pursued he slowed to a walk, forcing himself to think. He needed to get to his bike. That needed to be his first goal. It took him a few minutes to find an exit, but then he had already making his way toward the vehicle parking area already.

When he opened the door he saw no vehicles. They had been parked everywhere before just outside the gates. Now the grounds had grown by leaps and bounds. In the distance he could make out students scattering toward various buildings. The group that caught his attention first was a group of what resembled …. demons. They were running toward a building that could only be a Library. Following them was the party’s token Wonder Woman, Amber Volkova. (OOC: I asked.) Only one girl on campus was that tall. She was carrying a smallish chick under one arm like a small child.

Ratchford University had had but a single building and a small estate grounds. This place was so much larger - like a major university.

Forcing himself to calm down he stepped out into the night air … and began to walk. He was done running. He glanced about. He didn’t feel right about the Library. He had a very bad feeling about that. But it was the first building he had spotted and it was as good a destination as any.

Then he spotted a small group of students being pursued by some huge tentacled beast with a great maw. Part of him wanted to go and try to save them. But then that was exactly why he had avoided the larger groups. There was nothing he could do for them. He continued on.

Amber ignored the wriggling of the girl in her arms. Instead she concentrated on movements of the crowd to pick out a path without trampling anyone. Once clear of the room she began to push forward until the crowd began to thin out and she could pick up speed. She gave no thought to finding shelter in a room. She wanted out of the building altogether. She wanted her car. She wanted to burn rubber and get the hell out of this place.

When she hit the school grounds - where the courtyard and cars were supposed to be - she discovered no cars, estate grounds rather than a courtyard, and no signs of the wall or road that Ratchford University was located on. In the distance she spotted a small group of students dressed as demons. She recognized them by the makeup of the group. She had spotted them earlier in the party. Julia and Yulia she knew. Julia reminded her of Misty, a Japanese / French friend of hers from Miami. Yulia she recognized largely because of the Russian name.

The Texan woman decided she needed to keep both hands free. So she let the girl down and told her to follow Julia’s group. She was careful to keep her speed down. Her damsel in distress was dressed as Bast, the Egyptian cat goddess - a black cat.

“Follow them and don’t cross their paths!” Amber ordered.

“Why not?” the other girl asked. She was so terrified she had forgotten what she looked like.

Amber grinned. “Black cat?”

The woman did a double take. “Oh … yeah!” She gave a nervous laugh. “I forgot.”

“At least you have 9 lives!” Amber decided to keep up with the humor. Then she spotted the tentacled horror shooting out of the haunted forest drawn by the vibrations in the ground made by the first group. Amber’s head lowered as she fought back the protective instincts she felt despite her terror. ‘Bast’ started to slow down. The beast was going to cut them off.

“Keep running. No matter what happens, keep following them. I’ll draw it away. You’ll be fine.” And with that Amber put on a burst of speed on an intersection path for the horror.

++++++++++

Beth Saunders was sucking hard for air when she arrived at the Library. She had glanced over her shoulders in horror to see the blond amazon “Wonder Woman” attacking the rear of the tentacled horror and fleeing to draw it away. It had taken Amber a couple attempts to keep its attention - just enough to buy Beth time to scoot by.

“Hello?” Beth called into the gloom. She remained at the door to look back to see how Amber was doing. The giantess was in full sprint mode and headed for the Library. She waited, ready to open the door for her and slam it shut behind the woman. Last thing she saw, though, the tentacled horror was giving up.

Witching Hour Pt 2

Library

Quarter after midnight.

Characters present:

Julia Jang, Alvin King @Darth Pai Amber Volkova, Beth Saunders @sharlene79 Eric Blackwell @Mitheral

The door to the library slammed shut.

“What was that..?” Julia’s eyes widened when she heard the door open and close. Her eyes narrowed with suspicion. The noise having caught both Julia and Alvin’s attention, they turned their heads to look in the direction of the ruckus. Standing up, they both glanced at one another out of the corner of their eyes, fully aware of what they looked like.

“Hello?” A woman’s voice rang through the library. It was somewhat shaky but held the tone of an attempt to be confident. The two hid behind a shelf to scout the two newcomers. They were both women, one drastically smaller than the other. The smaller one was dressed up like a cat, a black cat to be precise, while the other seemed to be a superhero of some sorts. Either way, it looked like they weren’t much of a threat, they were human after all.

Alvin was the first one to step forward, his large size seemed intimidating at first - then again, there was a woman who was just a little shorer than him - but if one could sense the mood, you would know that he meant no harm from the friendly aura the man gave off. “Hello.” Alvin stood in front of the two women, a few feet away from them so that he didn’t suddenly invade their space. It would hurt to get cut in half by those swords that the taller woman had and by the fresh stains on them, it seemed that she knew how to use them.

Julia kept her distance, watching from afar, but she no longer purposely hid herself behind the book shelf. With sharp eyes, she saw something move that wasn’t Alvin or the two women. So, moving away from the two women, Julia confidently made her way towards the area in which she saw something move. Her eyes had to adjust to the darkness when she first realized where she was but by now, Julia was able to make out a somewhat humanoid shape. The question was if this humanoid thing was safe or not.

It seemed to be human but Julia wasn’t sure. Squinting, Julia frowned and then finally decided to call out to the mysterious being. Is it a man or a monster? “Hey, you over there.” Julia’s voice was strong and commanding, a slight hint of irritation was not-so-secretly hidden in there but she didn’t exactly care at the moment. “Are you human?” Even her questions sounded more like demands. It was as if Julia demanded that the being be human. And so, she waited for a response.

Meanwhile, with Alvin, he tried to assure the two women that he was not a monster but when he attempted to remove his headgear, he found that it wasn’t coming off. Eyes widening in shock, Alvin coughed to calm himself down. “My name is Alvin King,” Pointing at himself, Alvin smiled in a friendly sort of way. His pearly white teeth almost sparkled in the moonlight lit library. Gesturing behind him to Julia, Alvin glanced back and introduced his date. “This is my da—“ Only to find that she had disappeared.

Scanning the library desperately to find Julia, Alvin let out a sigh of relief when he saw her near the dark corner of the library, her back turned to them. “That’s my date, Julia.” And then he turned his attention to the two women before him.

The Classroom on the Third Floor Pt 1

Classroom (3rd Floor)

Quarter after midnight

Characters present:

Yulia Praskovya @Darth Pai Katsurou Wilkins @CharmingCthulhu

Slowing down to a jog, Yulia glanced around to figure out where she was. From what she remembered, she was currently on the third floor of the building. The same building that the Great Hall was in, the same building that shook with demon’s laughter and was overrun with hellhounds. Yulia suppressed a shiver from going down her spine and simply rolled her shoulders back and continued to look around the hall.

She wasn’t exactly tired from the running, but the added stress of “running for your life” did make her break a sweat. Her heart was pounding but she was able to take deep breaths and calm herself. Yulia knew that this was real. Those people that fell in the Great Hall, they died. The demons that took the “virgins” of the party were also real. All of this that would usually be seen in some sort of 90s horror movie was completely real.

Opening the door and entering what seemed to be an empty classroom, Yulia raised an eyebrow when she saw a fort made out of desks and chairs. She didn’t know what was behind that fort but she had a pretty good idea. An idiot was behind that fort. Then again, Yulia couldn’t say something like that, her scores on any exam that was academic weren’t the best. But that would be something that Julia would say if she was here with her.

Approaching the makeshift fort, Yulia called out to the person, or people, behind the fort. “Hello? Is anyone there?” Stopping in her stride, Yulia stood with her hands by her side and introduced herself. After all, why would someone trust a complete stranger? “My name is Yulia Praskovya, you can call me Leah. What’s your name?”

One could easily call Yulia an idiot but at least she wasn’t a panicking idiot. She’s always been like this. From breaking her femur bone to having a gun pointed at her, Yulia has approached them in an optimistic and calm manner that only a moron could have. And that was her strength, that was way she was still alive after the event in the Great Hall. That and luck combined with her superior-to-most athletic ability.

“Hi?” Yulia beamed.

Witching Hour Pt 3

Quarter after midnight.

Characters present:

Julia Jang, Alvin King
@Darth Pai Amber Volkova, Beth Saunders @sharlene79 Eric Blackwell @Mitheral

The tentacled horror thing never even seemed to notice Eric’s passing. And his entry into the Library was equally quiet, for by the time he arrived the rest of the group was starting to introduce itself - except Julia, of course.

Eric’s eyes locked onto the shadows. Unlike the rest of the group, as near as he could tell, he had what had to be the best night vision - despite the helmet and contacts he wore to make his eyes look pitch black. His tail continued to swish noiselessly back and forth nervously, not that he even noticed. The costume had been designed to animate the tail on its own.

The creature in the shadows could be described as once human. Only now its four limbs had mutated into something resembling those of an arachnid. The woman’s abdomen had likewise enlarged. Her body had been contorted - probably quite painfully - for horizontal movement. Webbing made of shadow blew in non existent winds as the creature edged forward toward Julia’s approach - until she saw Eric staring at her.

No human should have been able to pierce the darkness of the obtenebrated shadows. Angry and afraid the arachnid demonic woman withdrew into the shadow. She preferred single pray she could subdue easily. The small woman would have been perfect as a new sister. A seething rage wracked her body as she saw Eric still staring into the shadows.

Eric began to glance around. There wasn’t just the one - but over a dozen of the creatures. Instinctively he averted his eyes. His voice rasped a little as he spoke in an urgent voice. “Center of the room everyone!” He moved like the wind toward Julia, eyes locking on the one creature that had been eying her as prey. He held his guitar in one hand out as if to fend off the creature. His other arm tried to scoop around Julia as he sought to place himself in the path of the creature if it tried to charge. His tail had a mind of its own as it snaked itself around Julia’s leg - a little too familiar.

“You don’t see them? They aren’t human ….”

And the Biker from Hell had forgotten his manners and neglected to introduce himself. Amber supposed he could be forgiven considering that he was offering a warning and trying to help. He had just skipped the pleasantries. Typical male.

“Amber Volkova,” she offered while moving over to Beth hastily and trying to nudge her toward the center of the room as suggested. She could make out brief blurred movements here and there in the shadows. Her body gave an involuntary shudder. They creeped her out.

She half ignored Alvin. She did her best not to grin at Julie. And though she tried not to show it her muscles tensed to move fast the creature in the shadows proved to be a threat. Then Biker from Hell moved at a speed that made her all too suspicious that he might very well be one of the demons. The guy could really sprint. Her eyebrows, however, raised a little as his tail tried to snake around one of Julia’s legs. That was dangerous territory. And Amber was more than ready to put a stop to THAT if Julia objected and Eric didn’t behave himself.

Beth Saunders was still pretty shaken by all the carnage and fully expected more. This was like a horror movie. And she felt like the pretty girl that end up in a scene with eerie music - that she can’t hear - and gets stalked and killed. She smiled back at Alvin. Her voice was still pretty shaky and perhaps a little hollow. Her speech sounded almost recited. “Beth Saunders. I decided to go as Bastet. She’s probably my favorite mythological being.” Then she added, “What are we going to do?”

Julia raised an eyebrow as she was whisked away towards the center of the room. The young man, who Julia recognized as Eric Blackwell, sounded very urgent but she couldn’t understand why. She had been staring at something in the shadows but never in her wildest dreams would Julia have guessed that the being in the darkness was such a grotesque creature.

Julia’s eyes widened in shock, her nose scrunching up in disgust as she finally saw the dozens of movements in the shadows. She didn’t have the best night vision, in fact, she felt as if her eyesight had gotten a little worse in the darkness, but the monsters that lurked in the darkness of the library weren’t as difficult to see now that someone had pointed them out. Julia couldn’t believe that she had initially mistaken them as humans.

The first words that left Julia’s lips were, “What are they..?” But that was a rhetorical question. Everyone in the room knew that the creatures that surrounded them were indeed monsters, real monsters that could potentially trap someone and end their life. With everyone gathered in the middle of the room like this, Julia didn’t exactly feel safe. She felt trapped, especially if someone was holding onto her.

Normally Julia wouldn’t have left something wrap around her leg due to her costume but for some reason, it was like the costume had become her skin, a part of her body. When Julia quickly tore her eyes away from the shadows to look down at her leg, she saw a cord-like rope around her calf. She assumed that she had tangled herself in it while moving to the center of the room. However, Julia was frozen in fear to move her body.

Alvin quickly hurried alongside of the two girls, glancing around the room that he thought was safe. Glancing over at Julia, Alvin bent down and followed the direction of her gaze to find himself staring straight into the eyes of a deformed monster that seemed to be very spider-like. They say that the web of a spider is surprisingly strong. If one were to get trapped in it, death is very likely.

Narrowing his eyes, Alvin frowned. This was the real thing. This was actually happening. When Beth asked what they were going to do, Alvin turned around and did his best to give her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry. We’ll find a way to get out of here safely.” Glancing back down at Julia, Alvin decided that she was going to be alright for the moment and made his way back over to Beth. “We’ll think of something.” He said, bending down a little so that Beth wouldn’t have to strain her neck to look up at him.

Looking back at the monsters that surrounded them, Alvin frowned and furrowed his eyebrows together in frustration. What were they going to do? He wasn’t the smartest guy in the university, he was considered a jock after all, but Alvin wouldn’t allow people to die just because he couldn’t think or come up with a plan. So, with that thought in mind, Alvin’s hands lit up with a green light and he reached out to tap Julia’s shoulder.

Julia let out a gasp of both surprise and pain when Alvin’s hand hovered above her shoulder. She tried to move forward to get out of the way, but with Eric’s arm in the way, Julia ended up hissing and turning to glare at Alvin. “What was that?” She said, her anger temporarily distracting her from the immense fear that immobilized her only a few moments ago. Julia frowned as she stared at the bright green flames that surrounded Alvin’s hand.

As Alvin began to apologize, Julia completely pushed his words out of her head and focused on the green light and only the green light. She had an idea, but would it work? The monsters seemed to only be in the darkness, hiding their webs in the comfort of the shadows. What would happen if they were exposed to light? Especially a light as hot as the green fire around Alvin’s hands. Sure, it might not work but it was better than nothing.

Julia was going to live. She was going to find a way out of this dreaded university and then go home and relax. Even if it did mean putting the lives of others’ at risk. “Alvin,” Julia muttered, quickly glancing back at the monsters. She still felt fear in her heart but the sadist in Julia was beginning to emerge and give Julia the courage to whisper her plan into her date’s ears. “Why are the monsters hiding in the shadows?”

Sure, it could just be a hunting tactic and the arachnids may not be weak to light but it was worth a shot. And Alvin understood that. So he grabbed a book and lit it on fire before throwing it into the shadows. They both understood that someone could die in this library but only one of them was okay with being the one.

The arachnid creature was already gone by the time Alvin turned to throw the book. In truth it had already been set to flee. But the sight of Alvin’s light had been more than enough to make the creature fold back into the shadows. There wasn’t even signs of movement. It was as though the creature had never been there. Clearly they liked neither light nor fire. It was the first thing that had made any real sense since the bloodfest had begun. Then the book started to extinguish itself. The flames flickered as if a breeze was blowing it out. Then it died altogether. What happened next was considerably more horrifying.

Alvin started to bleed from his hands and arms. It was as though dozens of cuts had lacerated his skin. They were razor thin cuts - paper cuts - excruciatingly painful. Blood began to drip to the floor. The next thing that happened was just as spooky. A large book flew from a shelf at Alvin and Julia.

The Library was … angry over the damage to a single book. Of course these were probably antique books, musty old tomes.

“Crap,” Eric mutter and one of his wings swept around like a shield to deflect the book. That was a mistake, for it only seemed to cause several more book to fly from the shelves. “Okay … they are going to throw the books at us. What now?”

(OOC: Really short, I know. But I am going to wait and see what solution you guys can come up with. Flee or whatever ...)

“How about we get the heck out of here?” Amber was none too keen about spiders. And as much as she loved books, a haunted Library was freaking her out. She was hoping that getting away from the area might end the bloodletting by the books. There was a sort of logic to her thoughts. At the very least she didn’t expect the books to follow them out of the Library. Of course, if she was wrong Alvin might very well bleed to death. Through her mind coursed a nightmare scene of the books swarming and shredding him if they remained.

Beth, on the other hand, was finally starting to calm down and think a little. The smell of the Library had brought back old memories of Egypt. She came from a long line of archaeologists and historians. She had spent a couple of summers with her grandparents in Cairo. This place bore the same old tome smell. The very notion of burning a book gave her the eebie jeebies. A morbid thought of the whole place turning into a scene out of the Holocaust ran through her mind. She shoved that thought aside though and concentrated on what was actually happening.

The one book not in the shelves that didn’t move was the book that had been burned. It simply lay there on the floor where Alvin had thrown it. It dawned on her that this might be more than simple eye for an eye punishment. It might very well be a curse. The bleeding might never stop. So the question she now considered was how to end such a curse.

Beth looked at the book, then at Alvin, then down at the blood on the floor. Could it really be that simple? She didn’t want to deface a book. That could just make things worse. But the price of blood was a common theme in punishments.

She lowered her head and started walking forward toward the burned book as other tomes flew around her. They ignored her though. When she got to the book she knelt and picked it up carefully. Then she turned and walked back toward Alvin. When she got to the pool of blood starting to form on the floor she knelt again and touched a corner of the book to the edge. Before her eyes the pool of blood started to absorb into the book. She wasn’t really shocked when she saw pages started to heal. This whole place was so weird that this actually made sense.

Almost instantly the books flying through the air froze in place. And as the book started to heal, so too did Alvin’s wounds.

“Okay …. “ That was the best comment Amber could come up with.

Kojiro had been having a wickedly awesome night, his date was gorgeous....as far as he could tell and was quite friendly. The two were dancing all night just a small part moving along with the mass of writhing bodies on the dance floor. He had just brought his date a drink along with one for himself when the madness began, the memories branding themselves into his mind.

The voices echoing was at first thought to be part of the music until he realized the music had stopped playing, the floor shaking and the sudden screams of pain, fear, and panic made it all too real. Koji turned dropping his drink his fighter's instinct making him reach for his sword and grab his dates arm. "Let's go." He tugged trying to pull her along but she wouldn't budge he turned to see her locking eyes with a hellhound seconds before it pounced. Koji saw the muscles flex and fire off, his own reacting in time with the beast's drawing the sword and bringing it down on the monsters jaws slicing off the muzzle and the front section of the lower jaw.

The hound howled in pain and swung at Koji with it's claws meeting Koji's blade as he aside it defensively only realizing that it was a stupid idea as he flew through the air landing hard on his shoulder and cracking his head against the ground. There was no damage to his head thanks to the helmet he used for the costumes headpiece but the blunt force still made lights flash in his eyes.

Kojiro picked himself up off of the ground and faced the hound which was more preoccupied with his date, her head shifte towards him and he could feel the fear coming off of her. He charged, running towards them but the demon had time, it leaped at Kojiro's date and easily ripped her apart with it's claws her scream more terrifying as it was abruptly ended as opposed to continuing. Koji roared and the hound turned but not quite fast enough. Raijin was hilt deep in the monster's ribcage it's life fleeing its body as it swung weakly at Koji still having enough force to break skin and create three vertical slashes along Koji's arm. He bit back his pain and ripped Raijin out of the hounds hide. His only thought now was fleeing his only reason to fight one beast gone.

He turned his back and ran, briefly chased by more of the bloodthirsty hounds he bolted throughout the hallway and practically leaped up the stairs taking them three at a time. He didn't stop until he tripped on the top step of a flight of stairs quickly slamming into the ground and his sword skidding on the floor. He pushed himself up on his hands and crawled away from the stairwell his right arm burning where he was clawed, he grabbed his sword and stood up using It to help him stand. He meandered around looking into each classroom he passed lest he be blindsided by another hellion. He's stopped as he came across a room with a humanoid figure standing in it, the thing wasn't facing it so he couldn't tell if it was human or not. Cautiously he stepped into the room sword at the ready dispute the inferno his right arm had become, he looked at it and dispute the pain it seemed to be healing or maybe he was going mad. Either way he had another being friendly or hostile in front of him, and he wasn't going to let it get him, if it was in the classrooms even if he hid in one it would find him eventually, better to finish it now. He continued creeping up behind her his movements silent until he heard her voice. The girl introduced herself as Yulia, he relaxed his body but wondered if she was talking to him or something else. He stood straight and cleared his throat unsure of how to alert her to her presence, "Sorry to intrude, I uh.....I kinda thought you were oni. I'm Ukitake Kojiro."
